German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).
Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.
I am confused. I mean, sure, it doesn't have to make sense because it is a fairytale but... still? What just happened? At the beginning of the story I was interested, but then it just turned really weird... with the sun, the moon and the stars? I also have objections about her traveling methods. Going on a journey that far, with but a little bread and water...? The stool was very impractical, as well. But, alright, once again it is just a fairytale so it does not have to make too much sense. Up until this point, I was still enjoying the story, though. I think I could have overcome the weirdness of it... but then her... alternative idea for a wooden key... Are you for real!? I just ... it legit just shocked me. The ending, however, was cute, albeit still very weird.

Interesting story. The brothers seem a bit dense at the beginning. The girl however, is really brave to go off on her own like that.
The darkest part was when she decided to cut off her finger. Could she really not have found another way? It just felt unnecessary. She really should have found another way.
The sun and the moon are not too great in this story. They're rather mean to the child even though in most stories they are helpful. In this story it's the stars that provide the girl with aid.

I've read variations on this tale but what I liked here is there are really no evil entities involves — just a careless mistake made in anger. A king finally gets a daughter, but he gets frustrated with his sons when he sends them out to get water and they don't return. He makes a wish that they become ravens, which comes true. Later, the princess, when she finds out what has happened, goes off to find and rescue her brothers.
