The Maze Runner doesn't match competitors in the genre like The Hunger Games and Divergence, but it isn't terrible either. It is really rather more of the same - though the concept is compelling, the author fails to fully deliver and you end up with a watered down version of a Westerfeld novel (no one can touch the brilliance of Uglies so I'd rather they stop trying).

There are a few traps Dashner is guilty of here that I wish authors would stop falling for. First, the main character is rather whiny. I have no idea why that's a thing, but it takes away from a character. Second, advancing the plot by having characters not speak to each other, so they end up in a crisis. boring. Third, unnecessarily creating a new sublanguage (the only one of these I ever liked was in Uglies).

I loved all 4 books. I couldn't wait to get the kids down for nap or bed and have that "me time" spent reading these books! Very well written; easy to read and, refreshingly, no curse words (although they had their own they'd made up).

I can't help but notice the many parallels the series has with The Hunger Games. Thomas reads like a male Katniss Everdeen:

1. Protagonist is a teenager who has lost a parent
2. Story is set in a dystopic world and even mentions a location that both series share
3. Protagonist is thrown into many life and death situations along with people his age
4. Protagonist has both witnessed and committed acts which would scar any person for life
5. Protagonist becomes a symbol of rebellion and fights against an authority composed of adults
6. Protagonist finds peace in the end but not before suffering a most tragic loss

What I like about the series are that:

1. While the first few chapters can be dragging, once it gets going the books are hard to put down.
2. The series is very coherent and each book is important in delivering the story as a whole. No one book is better than the rest.

But essentially it's the same young adult story but packaged differently so if you're in the market to read about teenagers who act beyond their age in extraordinary and terrible circumstances, Maze Runner is a good pick for you.

This book passed it predecessor by far!

The second book in the maze runner series meet my expectation and over! The book takes place right where the last book took place which I loved. This book set the gladers up with an amazing trial full of dangers, secrets, suspense and betrayal. What I loved about thee book is that there was so much more action in this book then in the last one and that's something that I really liked. Also the plot I feel was much better then the first book because the writer just straight up tells you what's going on and not just placing you in a strange maze without knowing what's going on.

I also really liked the characters this time around. I loved the friendship between Thomas, Minho and Newt. And I also loved reading about Thomas's and Theresa's relationship which I couldn't get enough of. I also wanted to get to know the new characters Aris and Brenda.

Over all this book is suspenseful and if full of plot twist that will break your hearts.

This series is amazing!
The first 2 books are just perfect.

But I'm giving this series a 4 stars rating, be ause I didn't really like The Death Cure and The Kill Order.
I don't know why exactly, but those took me a while to finish it, it didn't really have an impact for me. I don't know how to say it differently, it just didn't.

I have many contradictory opinions about this series but these are the highlights without giving any of the plot away.

- The 1st book in the series is a bit slow. The author tries to make it mysterious but really he just drags things out too much. I am happy to report that I just watched the movie and they fixed a lot of the problems the 1st book had like the slow pace and the author’s tendency to make things overly complex.

- I also was never fully satisfied for the reasoning behind the Maze. The author never goes into any explanation as to how the purpose behind the Maze gets to the goal it apparently was designed for (that is all I can say without giving anything away).

- The 2nd and 3rd books are all action. This makes them really fast reads but they start to get monotonous. In my opinion, a good book should go somewhere, have some kind of climax, but this series just tries to ride the adrenaline high of the characters until the very end.

- Also, this series is very very dark. It made the hunger games look like a picture perfect society comparatively. I found that by the end of the 2nd book, I was tired of this horrible world, all the dying, and the non-stop action.

I gave these books 3 stars because for the most part it kept me entertained, but I would not recommend this series to a child or the faint of heart. If you really stop and consider the world the author has created, then you cannot help but to be horrified.

It took me most of book #1 for me to decide if I even liked this book series. It's not terrible but I've definitely read better stuff. I like to complete a series no matter what because I always like to know where the author takes the story. This particular author seemed to have trouble with the direction things were going, I spent most of book #3 wondering how there was even going to be an ending. And then of course once I got there I wasn't impressed. It wasn't a terrible ending but it wasn't great. I am, however, looking forward to seeing what they do with it at the cinema. Maybe a film version will be better than the book. It's not often but it does happen.

Why do I like The Maze Runner so much???
My favorite thing about this series is one word.. TERESA. I love her! She was there in every book but.. I don't know... It should've been her not Brenda... I hate Brenda..... (Does that seem childish?) ... Anyway, the story was more interesting this way. It's one of the Best series I've EVER READ!!!!
There's also something interesting about this series that if you either start reading the maze runner, the kill order or even the fever code (then one after one by order) you'll be able to understand everything! That's really COOL!
It's been about two years since I read the first book of the series and then one after one until a week ago, I found out that there is a new addition to the series. I started reading it non-stop till the end then I felt that kind of emptiness "is this the really end of The Maze Runner?"...
Thank you James Dashner for giving us such a great time reading your awesome books!

Yet another trilogy in the style of The Hunger Games and Divergent. It has been advertised as such and I would agree. The complete series also includes a prequel which I think worked well in explaining the origins of the world the Maze Runner is set in. The story is stranger (for lack of a better word) and the premise not as strong as The Hunger Games and Divergent but the trilogy as a whole is much stronger, and does not taper out in the later books as the other trilogies did. It was a much more consistent experience.

Plot progression was good, the books are fast-paced and difficult to put down, and I always wanted to know what happened next. The setting is vastly different in every book and is pretty well described and helps set the scenes of desperation in the dystopian world. Character development in the main trilogy is poor. Interesting characters had the unfortunate tendency to die, while the main characters do not seem to progress past a "rebel with a cause" persona. It was better in the prequel. I also did not really buy into the premise of mapping the brain's reaction to different variables as a way to find a cure to a disease, seemed silly to my scientific mind.

Overall, worth the read and kept me entertained on the 40 hours flying to London and back.

Disclaimer..... I'm 35

I understand this is for junior high kids, but I thought it was weak. I wish my phone had no service when I was at Costco and scanned the box set into my goodreads app. 4.3 rating with comparisons to Hunger Games, I was sold.
I can deal with high, unfair expectations, but this just didn't do much for me. It dragged on. It's almost as if the author wanted to prolong each book to make a series. "What does this mean? I can't tell you now. Why not? I just can't, you'll figure it out later". Stuff like that got real annoying. I liked the concept, but was pretty unsatisfied after reading the series.
If your 12, I'm sure you'll love it. Time to get back to some adult books.

A no-fuss, ripping, unpretentious young adult dystopian yarn. Less sophisticated than the Hunger Games, it still delivers, and Dashner is very good at combining suspense, angst and adventure.

❕BOOK REVIEW❕
⭐️ Rating - 3 stars

✨”The maze runner” by James dashner ✨

This series takes readers on an exciting journey through a dystopian world full of mystery, danger and heart-pounding action.

the series tells the story of Thomas, a little young person who wakes in the Glade, a mysterious area surrounded by a continually shifting maze, with no memory of his past. Along with a group of other boys known as the Gladers, Thomas must get through the deadly maze, uncover its mysteries, and fight the evil organization known as WICKED, which controls their fate.

I really enjoyed the first book, from the world-building to the characters to the plot. The second book was acceptable, but the third one was very devastating, especially because ❗️spoiler alert ❗️Newt died! He was my favorite character, and his death was so unexpected and unfair that it totally ruined the story for me.

The fourth book ended up being weak and confusing. The fact that it wasn't about Thomas and the other Gladers confused and annoyed me the most. Instead, this novel is about some random people who I am not sure are related to Thomas or anyone else. And because we know nothing about these people, we're left with more questions. Unfortunately, I DNFed the series after the kill order.

The Maze Runner series By James Dashner is very hard to follow at times because it begins in the middle finishes and then goes back to the beginning. In a dystopian society where sun flares destroyed the world and then a deadly virus came and wiped out all but a small sample of immune children. WCKD takes the children and puts them in trials to try and find a cure. It turns out that there is no cure so the children rebel and are taken through more tests. In the end, they do find a small paradise and lock themselves in so that none of the non-immune can get them. I like that he wrote the books in the order he did or the whole story would have been given away in the beginning. I do not like that a lot of the main characters die in some way to help others escape. If you want to read this book you should like science fiction. I would highly recommend this series.

When I finished this series, I had one thought: finally. (As in, yay, I'm finally done.) I literally do not understand at all why this series is so popular. For one thing, it is so badly and lazily written. The writing is filled with clichés. Oh, and speaking of the word "filled" ... that is one of Dashner's favorite words in the entire world. I cannot tell you the amount of times something "filled the air" or "filled Thomas's mind." And "filled" is not the only word that is FAR overused in this book. Everything is just so awkwardly and often unnecessarily worded. The "cool" (aka, stupid and annoying) slang that the characters use grated on my nerves so much that I could hardly stand it. And every attempt to be funny or witty fails miserably...every joke sounds like something that my 10 year old brother would make to try to impress his older siblings. They're just...not funny.
Every character is horribly underdeveloped. I honestly didn't care about any of the characters at all... We are TOLD why we like characters, not SHOWN why we like then. (Which basically means...I didn't like them. I didn't care if they died. I didn't care if they were upset.) Thomas does not grow as a character at all from the first sentence to the last of the series...he always stays the same boring, lifeless, unrealistic boy. I didn't understand why Thomas liked people either...Thomas will think about someone as his best friend in the world...but I had no idea why, because I was never shown any relationship development at all.
On top of all of this, I honestly just thought that the plot was stale. I was so bored. Just when I thought that something cool might happen, I was disappointed as a new "reveal" turned out to be just another boring flop. The ending of the series was underdeveloped, boring, and, honestly, stupid. Well...really...the entire series was underdeveloped, boring, and, honestly, stupid. Would not recommend. At all. Ever.

This book was interesting, but it felt like you were inside a Michael Bay movie, to much action explosions and dead of inconsequential characters, and yes consequential characters also die, this is a collections of 4 books and the last one is the best one, the most coherent in itself, but darker, and sadder in a collection of books already dark and sad.
The problem with the books is that the history at least in the first three makes no sense you ask the same thing through all the history, Why? and Why? and WTF? and when the explanations finally comes (this writer likes cinematic twist Shyamalan style) your reaction is Bullshit and that makes no sense, you suffer three books of torture porn (saw like) and you get that kind of explanation ending!!! even the Stephen king giant spider endings were better. Any way all the movies analogies are on purpose when you read is evident that this books were written to catch on the dystopian craze and get a movie deal, all the action and explosions, you can practically see the shaky cam, the personages are there just to be kill not having any substance, its pretty easy when you just establish they have no memories, most have no name so their deaths are meaningless we have 4 protagonist and 40 red shirts used to give extra seriousness and darkness and maybe an pg 13 rating.
the forth book the prequel was much better but is really similar to a post apocalyptic zombie movie, dawn of the dead type and has a similar dark ending, but is an emotional ride, with well develop characters and a history that has internal logic and coherence, i will recommend to read all the books to read the prequel or best yet, just read the last one, the prequel, The Kill Order.

BLURB (TMR): When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas can remember is his first name. But he’s not alone. He’s surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade, an encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible maze.
Like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they came to be there, or what’s happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything to find out.

WHAT I THOUGHT: I use to hate reading until I randomly bought the Maze Runner. I picked it up one day in a shop at the last minute, little did I know how incredible it was going to be. But I have to admit, I started reading it and I thought it was the worst book ever, I didn't get it at all, so I stopped reading it. Then about a month later I attempted to read it again and I got so into it. I couldn't put it down. It is literally such an amazing, jaw-dropping book. It's so dramatic and intense and each chapter ends on a cliff hanger which makes you want to read more. It has a superb storyline with characters that's you'll love and hate. It is a must read! And that's just the first book. The 2nd is The Scorch Trials, which if anything is even better than the Maze Runner. Lastly, there's The Death Cure. That book is so breath taking and it ends perfectly. I cried a lot after I read each book, and I don't cry often. That just shows what a huge effect these 3 books had on me.
There is also a prologue to this series called The Kill Order, which isn't all about the characters in The Maze Runner Series. It's more about how it all started.

To sum that all up. If you haven't read this series... YOU HAVE TO!

I started reading these books after watching the maze runner movie. The books add a lot more intrigue and complex themes over its cinematic cousin. The pace and over all tone of the first book, 'the maze runner" was good over all but I fell like the pace sometimes outstripped the story. I was really really pleased with the second book 'the scorch trials' and I feel like it is my favorite of the 4. The story really begins to gain depth as Thomas' dreams start to flesh out his back story and as new characters are added into the fray. The ending of the scorch trials left me a little dissatisfied because of the behavior of the main character and the short comings of his character that begin to show through his attitude and behavior towards his friend Theresa. "The death cure" was also a little unsatisfactory as the ending of the trilogy. The main characters continued anger and hatred, while understandable, detract a little from the story and never really let the full back story or resolution get flushed out in a satisfactory way. The prequel was interesting only in that it gives us background on the flare and the solar flares that ravaged the earth but I did not feel a connection with the main characters.

Overall an interesting read that was gripping at times but overall left me a little dissatisfied.

I just finished listening to the 3 book Maze Runner series. Though the ratings are high for the book, I did not really enjoy the story. The book was definitely gripping, action packed and left you wanting to turn the pages, but I found the descriptions a little too grotesque and violent for my taste. I think a lot of the books success can be attributed to this 'shock' element. I also felt like the main character could be rather annoying at times, more towards the end of the second book and definitely throughout the third. I also did not like how the third book ended. I felt it was a hodge podge of things thrown together to make a climatic ending that didn't provide the closure it needed. Certain people also died which I thought did not contribute to the plot and instead left a void of 'huh'. Still, I read all three of the books, so I must have still liked them! They are just not a series I would necessarily promote, nor will I see the movie (and movies that come out after the first), too dark and violent!

I really enjoyed this series. When I first started reading the Maze Runner, to be honest, I wasn't really into it and I thought the way it was written was maybe a bit strange, however as I read the next books, each turn of the page it improved. In the end I was loving this series, and I thought the ending was PERFECT! I don't want to spoil anything, but I think that it was really realistic and a nice way to finish such a surprising and adventure packed series. I would recommend this gripping series to anyone likes adventure packed, and interesting book series! And remember that it improves on every turn of the page. The characters are addictive with every twist and turn of the plot! Absolutely fantastic James Dashner!

The Scorch Trials: ★★✰✰✰
The Death Cure: ★★✰✰✰
The Kill Order: ✰✰✰✰✰ (Not read because three strikes, and you're out, out, OUT!)

Too much wasn't answered and resolved. I didn't give a flying hoot about any of the characters throughout this entire series, they were all so flat and lacking of emotion and how a real person would react to tragedy. My heart wasn't moved by any deaths, and i'm an easy one to cry and get connected to my beloved characters. It was so messy of a story and unorganized that there was just no room to feel for anybody. I'd recommend skipping this series, or just reading the first book and leaving it at that.
