It's been eight long years since Michael Gallagher has laid eyes on Shay Angel, back when he was a boy from the most prominent family in town and she was a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. But he hadn't cared about their differences—until one bad decision landed her in jail.
That was years ago and now he's back in Harmony Harbor for the holidays. So when Shay goes missing, Michael is intent on finding her—and finding out if their sizzling attraction is still there. But he's now a district attorney, and it looks like Shay is once again on the wrong side of the law.
Debbie Mason is the USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author of the Christmas, Colorado series and the Harmony Harbor series. The first book in her Christmas, Colorado series, “The Trouble with Christmas,” was the inspiration for Hallmark’s “Welcome to Christmas.” Her books have been praised by RT Book Reviews for their “likable characters, clever dialogue, and juicy plots.” When Debbie isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her family in Ottawa, Canada.
3 Setting Up the Next Harmony Harbor Stars * * * Sometimes you read a sweet story and notice little nuggets hidden deep in the pockets....one or two sentences about a couple who had history, forbidden attraction or a painful past which caused these secondary characters longing looks and unfinished desires. Debbie Mason is a master in making us interested in these types of situations and with Christmas with an Angel: A Short Story, she has laid the foundation for a full novel for these characters to come.
The timeline for this is right at the last bit of Mistletoe Cottage (Harmony Harbor). We met a man who saw the light at the last minute and told his bride-to-be he was changing his career to become a policeman. She was having none of it... she wanted a successful political attorney... and all the perks that went with it.. Her throwing the engagement ring at him told him loud and clear the marriage was off. Deep down, he really knew she wasn't the one...Somehow he got stuck following what his parents had wanted for him... not what he really wanted.
With all of this happening, he decided to go, get drunk and have his pity party for one at the town's bar. Of course, it didn't deter him that the woman he had always felt something for was there...He and her had a serious history and to this day, he felt like he owed her a huge apology. Her father felt he owed more than that ... and made it clear every time they crossed paths.
This novella has our two second chance lovers needing each other... she has been on the wrong side of the law since learning how from her daddy.... He has been on the right side; prosecuting and sentencing.
Can these two have any type of a chance...Debbie Mason thinks they can and shows us a thing or two...This is a novella read in partnership with the first book. It works with a bit of a full story and more of a tease for the next one. Right now there is no set date for their book.
This is an author and a series I have never read before. If the characters here are represented in the wider series then I would like to take the time and read a full novel. The characters are nicely written and give you a sense of being more than just two-dimensional figures. The town is a little vague here but that can be due to the fact that it is well known to others who have started the series. Becket Royce did a great job of bringing the story to life with all the characters.
Michael Gallagher has not laid eyes on Shay Angel for 8 long years, from the time he was a boy in love with her. He was from a prominent family and she was not making them more star-crossed than anything. When a bad decision causes her to end up in jail he moves on with the guilt that he could have done something to stop it from happening.
When he comes back to Harmony Harbor for the holidays he is not expecting to run into her. He is there for his wedding and Shay is the last person on his mind, at least until he actually sees her.
This was a short but nice listen that had me right from the beginning. It's a sweet story with an edge,
I can’t seem to get enough of Debbie Mason’s books. They all feel like going home again, to the faces and places you’ve grown to know and love. Christmas with an Angel was no exception. This was a shorter snippet into the world, and left a lot open for a future story with these characters, but it was no less satisfying. It was a quick visit, enough to refresh you and give you that much needed breath of fresh air. But not enough to keep you from wanting to come back soon for more.
There was a bit of suspense thrown in, with a few twists and turns that left you wondering what was really going on, and how on earth these two were going to work anything out. It was such a ride, I was genuinely sad when it stopped.
”Here. Next year. Same place, same time.” “I’m holding you to that”
'She changed the locks on my condo... packed all my stuff up and threatened to throw it out.' He waited for his bar buddy to share that news before adding, 'And she's holding my dog hostage.' If possible, his new friends were angrier than Michael. Apparently no one messed with someone's dog in Harmony Harbor and got away with it. Thanks to Michael's tale of woe, he'd officially been welcomed into the fold.
My Review:
This short story was more action and adventure and a significant departure from my previous experience and expectations of Ms. Mason's work. It was a quick and energetic story centering on the character of Michael and started with his abruptly canceled wedding, morphed into a drunken evening meant to atone for old regrets then resulted in him stumbling into clandestine activity involving an old girlfriend. Michael certainly had an eventful couple of days.
After being jilted at the altar, Michael Gallagher heads to a local bar to drown his sorrows. Who can blame him after his fiancé, Bethany, took everything from him even his beloved dog. However, his problems are just beginning when he chooses a bar owned by Charlie Angel. Charlie hates Michael after what happened between Michael and Charlie’s niece, Shay.
Shay has taken up with a rough crowd and Michael feels responsible after what happened years ago. He tries to help her, but finds himself in the middle of a situation he has no idea how to handle. Michael is determined to make things right, but Shay isn’t making it easy.
This is a novella between the first two books. To really understand what is going on, I think you need to start reading with book one. I did, so I knew exactly what was happening and why.
Although this book gave us a nice glimpse into Michael’s character, I feel it was just a small taste. This novella felt more like an excerpt or a scene instead of a complete story, but the main mystery is solved and doesn’t leave you hanging. It’s more like a sneak peek into a full length book you just know is coming eventually. I actually felt more intrigued by Michael and Shay then I did for the characters in the previous book, although I liked them.
I do hope we meet up with Michael and Shay again. I read the preview for book #2 and that looks like it’s going to be a good one as well. This is a really good series and I’m looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Christmas with an Angel was a well written start to a story. A heads up, as it is, this isn't a romance...yet. This really read as a prologue to a future story. In that sense...it's a bit disappointing because while the scene that happens resolves there's not a full story only a set up to a future one. There's not really much time to get to know the characters-- definitely not a place to start for those who haven't read book one. For what it is I enjoyed it. But, that said, I could have easily skipped it, too. I do want to see the romance between these two. Oo! It'll be fun, I think. An assistant district attorney and an ex-con heroine. Yes, one day that'll be a fun story to see.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy (via NetGalley) of this book.
I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the characters of Shay Angel and Michael. Both of whom were introduced in book 1. But they totally surprised me at the end. Christmas with an Angel by Debbie Mason is just a short read that gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of Michael.
He needed redemption...
So, he was a jerk. We all know that jerks are never really the hero type unless there was a glimpse of regret in the way they acted. Michael was portrayed as an anti hero type of character in book 1, as the way Sophie remembered him. To be fair they were young and having a relationship. He cheated on her (with Shay Angel) and she also overheard him speaking ill of her with his mother. So yes, I didn’t like him. However, adult Michael appears to be different. Maybe real life brought him down a peg or two or maybe it’s his crazy ass fiance.
In this novella, we only get Michael’s POV and we can get the sense that he is a better man. His love life on the rocks and his teenage fling back in town. A broken man waiting to be fixed.
Shay Angel, getting her wings back?
Boy is she wild! An ex con, who made me really think about how she of all people could fix her wrong doings. Thankfully, her personality did not rub me the wrong way. She actually seems like a pretty cool chick. But I wish I could’ve had more insight into her thought processes. I guess, it was kept from us because of her big secret at the end. (No, I’m not telling :) )
This really was a different story than what I was expecting. I enjoyed it but was a little dissatisfied at the ending. Hopefully their story is not wrapped up and we’ll continue to get glimpses of it throughout the series. Great potential of it being a great story.
A little note...
If you want a little backstory to these characters, read book 1: Mistletoe Cottage.
Love Michael and Shay in this. I love how we see a different side to both of them. We meet Michael in Mistletoe cottage and boy this one shows a new side as well. There he is a changed guy but not as much as what we see here. Here we see him feeling down on himself. His ex is a piece of work. It goes below the belt when you involve the dog and geesh especially when you don’t even care about the dog just getting back at someone. In this short fun flirty book. I say flirty because it is a flirt for us. We see two people who obviously have feelings for one another skirt the issue and when it comes to finally see the feelings we get the intrigue of vagueness and the flirtation of something that may occur later on. What we do get though is to see two sides to MIchael and Shay. We see where Shay has taken her past and turned it around but also show Michael she is different and stronger. We see Michael show he isn’t the arrogant man he was as a kid nor was he broken hearted. We see a man willing to risk for her and in the end it shows her who he is and how much he cared. We get to see happy moments-the dog and the wedding. Fun moments- the bar when he goes to get drunk. Moments of understanding and moments in which we see honesty and truth. We see their feelings on the sleeves of Shay and Michael even if no action is really seen on those feelings.I did enjoy how karma comes back to bite Michael’s ex though. I hope we see more of these two and they get a book in which we get more of the past explored but also the feelings they have for each other because those jumped off the page in this fun, dangerous at times action packed book where we see two people go to great lengths to protect each other but skirt around their feelings . wonderfully written and entertaining
Michael used to love Shay. Their lives were very different, but they had a special connection. Until Shay landed herself in jail and Michael could do nothing to prevent that from happening. Eight years later Michael is back in Harmony Harbor. He wanted it to be a special occasion, but things aren't going according to plan and Michael is taking this opportunity to do something good for his family instead.
When Michael hears Shay is having problems he wants to help her. Unfortunately it seems like she's in more trouble than she has ever been before. Michael isn't sure he can save her from it, but he's going to try anyway. Will he have the chance to make up with the girl who got away?
Christmas with an Angel is a thrilling short story. It's adventurous, fast-paced and gripping. I love the Harmony Harbor series and it was nice to see that Michael has his own story. He's a kind man whose life has changed drastically in just a few days time. Even though what he's going through is tough he tries to remain positive and this gives him the possibility to make things right with the girl he used to love. Shay is brave, bold and feisty. I loved getting to know her better in this short story and she's definitely intriguing. There are plenty of sparks between her and Michael and she has a clever and original way of dealing with them.
Debbie Mason writes about an intriguing town with fascinating people. Even though Christmas with an Angel is a short story there's a lot going on. I liked the mystery of it and the ending is promising, which made me like the series even more.
Michael is back home in Harmony Harbor and its been eight years since he's seen the love of his life. With his wedding off he knows needs to make thing right with people in his life and one starts with his cousin and one starts with Shay Angel. Shay is back in town on "business" and needs to stay clear of Michael for her own reasons, but when he gets a little to close things start to go array. Will she be able to get Michael away before its to late? WOW just WOW, when I first open this book I wasn't how short it was and since it was short how much of a story can be told. But this author did not disappoint. This book was small but packed for of a wonderful storyline. The book leaves you wanting more not in a bad way. I hope there is more to come of these two characters and this is not the end of them. I would so recommend this book its short, sweet, to the point, and packed full of action. Seriously worth the read.
I thought this was going to be an entire story about Shay and Michael but it’s more like a prologue for a story to come and what a prologue it was!
A short novella with a bit of everything, romance, action, intrigue and lots of fire between Michael and Shay, I really can’t wait for their book, after reading this I’m sure is going to be fantastic.
I enjoyed listening to this title as it continues Michael's story from Mistletoe Cottage.
“She changed the locks on my condo... packed all my stuff up and threatened to throw it out… And she's holding my dog hostage.”
After reading Mistletoe Cottage by Debbie Mason, I was intrigued by Assistant District Attorney Michael Gallagher who was definitely a jerk in Mistletoe Cottage. When I saw that this book – which was available in audio format for under a dollar – continued his story, it was a given that I would pick up Christmas with an Angel. I don’t really understand how the title relates to this story as it’s not that Christmassy and Shay is questionable as an angel, but I enjoyed listening to this installment told solely from Michael’s POV as it delves into his and Shay’s past. I would not jump into this tale without first reading Mistletoe Cottage as I don’t feel that Christmas with an Angel would work well as a standalone.
I listened to the audio edition of Christmas with an Angel which was well voiced by Becket Royce, a new narrator for me. She had a clear, easy-to-understand voice and used consistent, distinct voices for each character. Based upon her polished performance of this audio, I would not hesitate to pick up another audio performed by Becket Royce.
Michael was a jerk in Mistletoe Cottage – so I was glad to see him get a bit of comeuppance and a bit of redemption when his impending wedding which was to be held at Greystone Manor is called off by his entitled fiancé because Michael decided to go into law enforcement rather than politics, significantly lowering his fiance’s anticipated lifestyle. So, now Michael’s love life is in shambles, but there are future possibilities with wild, leather-wearing Shay. I’m not going into this story anymore as it is quite short, but, if you have previously enjoyed Mistletoe Cottage, you will not want to miss Christmas with an Angel!
My full review is published at Reading Between the Wines Book Club. Please check it out there!
Michael (an assistant district attorney) has just been dumped….at the altar… by Bethany…how could he have not seen Bethany for who she truly was…spoiled and manipulative. Now this probably isn’t an unheard of occurrence. Now to see how the fallout from this pans out.
Loved how from the beginning his buddy Liam would not let Michael go through this alone….”Knock it off with the I. We’ve got your back….” However, I am mostly just annoyed with Bethany for taking Atticus (Michael’s Irish Wolfhound)…how dare she use his dog as leverage!
Then, while Michael is drowning his sorrows…who does he meet up again with? The bartender is none other than Angel…a previous love interest and known bad girl! The story line from here becomes engaging, interesting and full of twists and turns…and I cannot say anymore as it is for you to read!
Usually with novella’s I finish the read feeling like I am missing something but with this story I did not feel as though I was missing anything…thank goodness. There was enough back story to really know who the characters were and how they are inter-related. I was fully engaged and surprisingly satisfied when I turned and completed the last page.
Christmas with an Angel is a quick read. While it might have helped to have read book one to get a sense of all the characters, I did find that having not done so did not detract from my enjoyment of this story. Though I will go back and read book one now ☺. I want to know more about Angel and Michael.

NARRATOR: Becket Royce This series has been a complete surprise to me about how good it is! I loved the first book, and this one is even better, but so completely different from the first. Not what I'd call a Christmas story though, even though it's set over that period.
This one is a short story (following on directly from book one) about Michael and Shay, an ex-girlfriend from his youth who took a wrong turn when she was younger and ended up in jail for a while. Michael's wedding has just been cancelled at the very last minute and he's drowning his sorrows (although he had a lucky escape!) in the bar in town when he bumps into Shay (her uncle owns the bar). There's bad feeling between her uncle and Michael as her uncle blames Michael for Shay's stay in prison. But Shay's back in town and Charlie reluctantly asks for Michael's help as he thinks Shay is involved in drugs etc. and getting back in trouble.
So Michael steps in to help and, whilst looking for Shay, gets caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and things start going downhill rapidly, although he does find Shay!
A completely different story from the first one, but even more enjoyable, more suspense. I wish it had been a full length book and not just a short story. But hopefully we'll see more of Shay in a future book as I really like her character and she definitely needs her own story to be told. Really loving this series!
Michael Gallagher wants to get drunk. His wedding is off and his ex won’t given him his dog. Yes, getting drunk is a very good idea. However, when Michael spots Shay Angel, after eight years, he is truly knocked for a loop. As a Assistant DA, and with Shay’s having been in trouble with the law, she is all wrong for him.
Shay suddenly goes missing, and he wants to help her, plus he wouldn’t mind seeing whether or not their attraction is still there. Shay, however, has an agenda, and despite still being drawn to Michael, truly wishes he would stay away.
Christmas with an Angel is a quick novella that has sweet romance and a bit of mystery. I definitely look forward to seeing more of this couple in the fifth book of the series, Driftwood Cove. Other books in the series are, Mistletoe Cottage,Starlight Bridge,Primrose Lane,Sugarplum Way,Sandpiper Shore and The Corner of Holly and Ivy.
This novella was a bonus story in The Trouble with Christmas, also by Debbie Mason.
Many thanks to Forever for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
CHRISTMAS WITH AN ANGEL by Debbie Mason was a very short story and not all that Christmasy. The cover is beautiful and the title had me thinking this was going to be an entirely different type of book. Not exactly what I had been looking for and as I read I felt like I was missing something. Nowhere did I see that there was a previous book in this series. Perhaps if I had more of the back story from reading other books in this series, I may have enjoyed it more.
There was action and suspense, but the romance was flat and the characters were not well developed... but again, they may have been better developed in previous books in this series. Reading this as a stand-alone just didn't really work out for me.
Debbie Mason is an excellent writer and just because this one didn't quite hit the mark for me, the only explanation I have is that I should have read other books in this series first. I also should not have put so much emphasis on angels and Christmas. That just wasn't what this was all about.

This is a very short story that takes place at Christmas time. It's really difficult to talk about the story without ruining it since it's a nice short one. It's safe to say that a cancelled wedding leads to a whole lot of hijinks. Shay Angel (as in "the" Angel of the title fame) is an ex of the rather dumped main character Michael. The two of them have a history that is less than perfect. Pretty far from perfect. When he happens to wander into her and her families bar, things happen. The action starts up right away and I really don't want to ruin anything so I'll leave the story there. The author wrote an action packed story in very few pages. The characters are flawed making them a little more... relatable? Hm, maybe not so much once the story picks up but they are very well written regardless. The book was fun and fast. Good story!
As I sit here deciding how to write this review, I am thinking of how Debbie Mason once again has me wanting so much more from her characters. This is a wonderful thing; you see in Liam and Sophie’s story we meet Michael, Bethany (Michael's Fiancée) and Shay who apparently has a past with Michael that entails a lot of problems. Now we get to see where Ms. Mason takes all this mess and turns it into gold. Read More. . . http://www.romanceswithalittlekick.co...
This was a quick read. Michael Gallagher hasn't seen Shay Angel in 8 years. He was from a well known family and she was from the wrong side of the tracks. He didn't care about any of that until Shay ended up in jail. Michael is now back in town and Shay ends up missing and he wants to find her and see if there is still something there but the only thing is he is now a District Attorney, His wedding is off and his ex took everything he cared about. Now he sees Shay and not sure what his feelings are for her and what he should do about it.
Michael Gallagher has just been stood up at the alter, or the day before anyway. It was his lucky day though because he realized that marrying that woman would have been a big mistake. When he heads to a nearby bar to drown his sorrows he meets up with a former girlfriend who is still angry with him and so is her father as he proves when he brings out his shotgun. However, when Shay's father asks for his help to get Shay out of trouble he feels obligated to help and finds himself in a whole world of trouble with the possible outcome being death.
This is a novella about Michael Gallagher and Shay Angel. They lost touch with each other many years ago. Michael was going to get married but he broke it off the day before. Now he wants to apologize to Shay for what happened in the past. In this short story we have a bit of romance and some suspense. This is leading up to more to come for this couple. I got this ebook from the author for a fair and honest opinion.
Christmas with an Angel (A Harmony Harbor Short Story) by Debbie Mason •Wedding Another great short story from Debbie Mason set in Harmony Harbor. This family is full of surprises and I can't wait to read more. I love reading what happens to the Gallagher family and the manor. I can't wait to read more! ARC received from Netgalley for an honest voluntary review. Favorite Passage ~ • “You said you shot at a rat.” “Yep, it was a big bastard. About six-two with eyes of blue,”
This a very quick and easy read. This follows up what happens after Michael tells Bethany he has resigned as ADA and signed up for the police academy. He runs into his summer love from years ago, Shay Angel. Her uncle still holds a grudge against Michael for Shay's stent in prison but it was out of his hands once his parents were involved. After all, she did steel his Corvette. Her uncle sucks him into to trying help Shay when they think she has gotten tangled up in dealing drugs. This lands him with a knock to the head and tied up right along beside Shay.
This is a small book, so like a small get to know a few more characters in the series. Not really a full book.
While this book is good, and the characters you get to like, I cannot see the value really in this book. As in the 5th book of the series, they have a whole book dedicated to their romance. I think this book could have been piled into the other book without losing too much.
Its a good book and fits the series, but doesn't really add value to the series.
Michael's having a bad day. His wedding is off; his ex-fiancee has changed the locks on their place and taken his dog; and he ends up in a bar where the bartender Charlie's got a grudge against him. Charlie's niece is Michael's long-ago ex, and he wants Michael to find her. What kind of trouble is Shay Angel into now? Not having read the precursor to this short story had me guessing as to the back story of these two characters, and why Michael would risk his life to find this bad girl.
I really this Christmas short story. I first read of the author, but definitely not the last. I really love Shay and how determined she is with everything she does. No Wonder Michael still loves her. Too bad they can't really together because of the work she does.
I really loved this and I'm happy I decided to read Debbie Mason.

A gripping story, woven throughout with frustration, sadness and intrigue. Feeling duped, Michael ended up at the same place as his ex girlfriend, trying to drown his sorrows. Which leD him back to the same ace the next day. Was it fear for his long ago Angel or something more comes?
