Dick King-Smith was born and raised in Gloucestershire, England, surrounded by pet animals. After twenty years as a farmer, he turned to teaching and then to writing children's books.
Dick writes mostly about animals: farmyard fantasy, as he likes to call it, often about pigs, his special favorites. He enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they get enjoyment from what he does.
Among his well-loved books is Babe, The Gallant Pig, which was recently made into a major motion picture, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Dick lived with his wife in a small 17th-century cottage, about three miles from the house where he was born.
My two daughters loved this book As do they other Sophie books. They are quick to get through and the fact that they usually contain a multitude of animals is sure to win them over. I read them out loud before bedtime and it is a perfect way to bond. Sophie is a spunky six year old in this story who goes to visit a farm over vacation. There she meets the dreaded Dawn at the beach but their interactions are brief. She spends most of her time there learning how to ride a horse. There are only a few things about the books I don't care for. For one, Sophie always seems to get what she wants, but admittedly, many times she has to work for it. Also, in this story, she receives money for what Dawn's parents mistakenly think was saving Dawn's life. The parents all laugh about it when she explains that she tried to tell the father but he wouldn't listen. I felt it was a missed opportunity for a lesson in honesty and integrity.
In The 4th instalment of the Sophie series, Sophie Gets a new Dog, Goes on Holiday to Cornwall, Makes friends with a Pot-Belly Pig & Rides a Pony for the 1st Time.
This was one of my favourite childhood books, I read it over and over again until all the corners of the pages were curling. I don't know what happened to my copy but I always loved DKS's books and had a huge collection. I'd recommend this for any child!
Did not enjoy this. It was first published in the 90s, yet the dad smokes a pipe. The kids say stuff like "mega". I could hardly bring myself to read some of it out loud. I didn't even get some of the jokes. I also found it vaguely offensive that the vietnamese pot-bellied pig belonging to a little girl called Jo was called Me-Blong-Jo. I'm probably being oversensitive but that name has stuck in my head and keeps surfacing throughout the day. My little girl enjoyed it though.
I loved the holiday scenes—what happened at the beach was hilarious! I also really enjoyed how the writer portrayed Sophie’s character—so determined and strong-willed.
I can't say that I like the Sophie books as much as I wish I did. She just spends so much time scowling, and she seems so spoiled, that even though she's a hard worker with real integrity I just can't feel engaged with her adventures. Still, I do highly recommend them to fans of Ramona, Clementine, and Babe the Gallant Pig.
Fourth in the 'Sophie' series about a small but determined girl who wants to be a farmer when she grows up. I've just finished reading this aloud to my six-year-old friend, and enjoyed it very much. In this book, Sophie's family acquire a dog, and go on holiday to Cornwall. Gentle, lightly humorous stories with great characterisation, which are wonderful to read aloud. Definitely recommended.
This book was about when Sophie starts to learn horse riding and she rides on a horse named lucky. Sophie at first keeps falling off but after a few time of practice. She is good at it. I especially liked the part when she had to leave lucky because that part was a bit sad. My favourite character was Lucky because she was very brave like Sophie. I recommend this book to children 8+
The Sophie series was one of my favourites as a young child. I really enjoyed all of the books that were purchased for me and would read / listen to them over and over.
