The tale of the sea king's daughter Ariel is a beloved one of losing-and then finding-one's own voice. The story has been told many times and in many ways. But always the mergirl wants more than her world can offer, and her father demands that she live within the confines of his domain. Her rebelliousness costs the little mermaid her voice and nearly her soul. But the power of good prevails, and Ariel emerges proud and unchanged.
And yet this is only half the story. So what of Ariel's nemesis, Ursula, the sea witch? What led to her becoming so twisted, scorned, and filled with hatred? Many tales have tried to explain her motives. Here is one account of what might have shaped the sea witch into a detestable and poor unfortunate soul.
Serena Valentino is best known for weaving tales that combine mythos and guile with her work on the comic book series GloomCookie and Nightmares & Fairy Tales, and her best selling Disney Villain Novels which have earned her critical acclaim for her unique style of storytelling, bringing her readers into exquisitely frightening worlds filled with terror, beauty and extraordinary female protagonists.
Her Disney Villain novel series would be best enjoyed if read in this order: Fairest of All: The Story of the Wicked Queen, The Beast Within: The Story of Belle’s Prince, Poor Unfortunate Soul: A Tale of the Sea Witch, Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy. Mother Knows Best: A Tale of the Old Witch and The Odd Sisters: A Villains Book to be released in Summer 2019. Book 7 will be out Summer 2020, Book 8 summer of 2021, and Book 9 Summer of 2022.
Serena lives in New Orleans with her dog Gozer, and a very tiny kitty named Momma.
This is the second book that I've read by Valentino, and it was enjoyable, but not as good as I'd hoped it to be. I was hoping for more from Ursula really, instead of way too much focus on the three dreaded sisters. Princess Tulip was a rather odd character to include in this, as I thought she didn't really have a proper, solid place. It got kind of tedious on my end, and I found that my mind was wandering about halfway through the read.
I did enjoy Ursula and her backstory, as after reading it, it made more sense of how she became so evil. The story itself was just too simply written, with too many pointless characters thrown in.
This is the third instalment in the Villains series, which rework the original tales from the initial villain's perspective.
This focuses on the infamous Ursula from the story of The Little Mermaid. I found this story the most vastly different to the original. There were some elements that remained and this still did coincide with its predecessor but, instead, focused on alternative facets that ran alongside the former story. I loved this individual take on the events that occurred and how the author truly made this her own.
A complexity in plot was added here, that I found missing from the first two series instalments. There was a stream of puzzling mysteries the reader was invited to uncover and a horde of new characters with their own unique agendas. The almost overwhelming action-heavy scenes made this relatively short book appear even shorter and became my new favourite for doing so.
I don't think I have ever given a 1 star review on here before, but this book was so disappointing and poorly written, that I had no other choice. When I try and think about anything redeemable this book offered, I come up blank. To be fair, I had not read the first two books in the series, so I came in at the end of the story for the three odd sisters. At first I didn't find this to be a problem, but the more I realized this story is not actually about Ursula, and instead about the three witches and Tulip, the more frustrated I became. Ursula really only makes cameo appearances throughout the book, and often she isn't even directly in the scene, but being observed from an enchanted mirror. Her character is poorly fleshed out, and Ariel is almost completely nonexistent in the story. The descriptions of people, places, and things are never enough to leave a lasting impression. The dialogue is contrived and forced at times. The most difficult thing to follow is the flow of the story, as it constantly jumps around in time and place, with no real rhyme or reason. I am honestly shocked that Disney would allow their name to be attached to such a poorly constructed piece of work.
I happen to be a big fan of Ursula. She is, thus far, my all time favorite Disney villain. Having admitted that, I recognize that I may have gone into this story with hopes raised too high. I expected something a little more unique and a little less borrowed. Only half the story is directly focused on the sea witch. The rest is some tangential plot of a princess Tulip and her witchy nanny? I don't know. Something to do with a continuing plot from the author's first two books, supposedly. Then, the half that is about Ursula? It is the movie "The Little Mermaid", chewed up and regurgitated onto the page. The dialogue of one chapter is literally just the lyrics from the song "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Full disclosure, I was still singing along in my head. The book begins promisingly enough, hinting at, then divulging fragments of an origin story. The idea for the origin was good, too. Surprising, yet appropriate. The language was simple and repetitive which is maybe allowable for children, but not on the level for teen readers. Looking past the style, the story deceived me into excitement. The first 50 pages trick you into a contract, promising to reward curiosity with a true origin story in exchange for your soul(or at least your time). The next thing you are aware of is having been drawn into a story you almost certainly already know with one or two hackneyed insight scenes that weren't in the movie, yet add nothing to the story but more pages. After this book, I will not be reading the two stories proceeding it, unless my curiosity turns morbid. I wish someone would take Ursula and write up the proper origin story she deserves.
I enjoyed the other two books in this series, but I have to say I was disappointed in this one. Rather than really focusing on the villain (Ursula) and delving into her backstory, the author chose to kind of branch off and create a sidestory pretty much unrelated to Ursula or The Little Mermaid. The strength of the other books was that it took a story we all know and love and put an interesting twist on it. This one only touched on the actual Little Mermaid story briefly. We got a glimpse into Ursula's background and why she became a villain, but the book didn't expand on it in the way that I was hoping, and in the way it did with the Evil Queen and the Beast. Instead it created a new story, which unfortunately wasn't very good and felt disjointed and uninteresting. If you're interested in this genre try Fairest of All and Beast Within, but I would just skip this one.
A story by Ursula??!! the villain from my all time favorite Disney movie The Little Mermaid? count me in! I've always loved URSULA and was amazed by her powers! she took Ariel's voice and store it in a shell *that gotta give her some points*
I hope this is the kind of story where Ursula is not the villain and that we get to see her perspective of the story *just like the Broadway show Wicked*
We all know and love the story of The Little Mermaid and her quest to become human. It is one of mine and my daughters favourite Disney story.
Poor Unfortunate Soul tells the story behind Ursula. Why is she is so angry and hateful? What has she got against Ariel to want to take everything away from her? In this book we find out. It has made her into an evil and twisted character but now you kind of feel a little sorry for her. We see the story unfold in its usual way but we also get the point of view of Ursula.
It is a quick, fun read and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more about the Disney villians.
Thank you to Scholastic Australia for my copy of this book to read.
Missed Chance. I had really high hopes for a book about my favourite Disney Villain, but boy was I dissapointed. I don't understand how this got published, I thought Disney had higher standards. The story is incoherent and makes a lot of unclear and unnecessary references to other characters (presumably from the other two books in the series) and it focuses more on other characters than on our favourite Seawitch. The book is dedicated to the authors dead cat, that's ok, but to make that dead cat one of the main characters in the book seems very childish and amateurish to me.
Unfortunately a book to quickly forget and an author to avoid.
I don't like to dump on other peoples work, but I had to voice my profound dissapointment.
I just received this pretty book yesterday. What an amazing cover. It was well worth the wait, and then I've read the book in less than a day. Yes, I received it yesterday and I've finished this morning, before going to work. I need more books in this series. There's no way that this is the end... I need other villains, so get to work, Serena! Read: Maleficent, Medusa, Yzma... I love me a good villain story. And in my honest opinion, it's the best one so far.
This book was a major disappointment. First off, there was no mention of Ursula and Triton's other sister Morgana in this book at all. This is very strange as in the movie Morgana says that Ursula was their parents favorite, where in the book Ursula states Triton was the favorite, although there was no mention of Ursula "leaving" the family and living with a human.
Another thing that stroke me as off was the way it was written, the sequence of events were in place strangely switching from past to present, and from character to character it made everything jumbled and had even more questions attached.
There also was very vague mention of anything in the childhood of Ursula, it was very general that her adoptive father was killed, she was "lost" and then "sent" to the human world, and there was no real connection to any character in the book.
This was very poorly written and the facts did not add up to other things we know about the story.
So yet another case of me trying to read a book and not being able to get into it. I decided to try the audio and I really enjoyed it. Some books are better read and some are better listened to I think.
This whole series seems to be mostly about the Odd Sisters, and their hands in each of the well-known and loved fairytales. They seem to tie in together as well. Characters from the previous books are either seen or mentioned in this one and a tie-in with the next book as well.
Wow. This reread flew by and now all I want to do is watch the movie.
Poor Unfortunate Soul was all about Ursula. First, we got to see her before she was evil. Then we saw her become evil until she died. I will say that I enjoyed the twists a lot more than I did the first time around (I think?). I also still think it's weird that Ursula and Triton are related in this one but I could also somehow accept it.
Then there's the scenes that were basically from the movie and oh man - can I just stop writing this and watch the movie now? Please?!
All in all, the odd sisters ended up saving the day and were less annoying in this short little book. Definitely wished it was a bit longer just because Ursula is such an interesting creature but I will take what I can get.
I'm excited to dive into the next book! ___________________________ “Well, well, my dear. Are we so brokenhearted as that? Is the loss of that terrible prince really worth your life?”
I love the cover. I loved the book. It makes me really want to re-watch The Little Mermaid.
Man, oh man, I do love villains. Ursula is probably my favorite villain but it could be because of her super freaking catchy songs.
I feel like all the books within this Villains series just keep getting better and better. Plus having all of these disney movies and being a total disney geek as a kid doesn't hurt either.
Und was steckt dahinter?
Depsite there being three smilies on the first page alone, the writing got better and I really got into it. Much better than I expected in all honesty. Runs alongside the Little Mermaid movie from Ursula's point of view, as well as some other characters involved in the story that we've never met. It's not going to win any awards, but it does what it promises. I think you need to know the original well, and if you love that enough then you're going to have to read this POV.
Coincidentally this is my third mermaid themed book in a single week.
Ursula is maybe my favorite Disney villian. Wanted more from this book for her character development. As it was I was more enticed by the here and there mentions of Maleficent.
Really fun! However, I think I need to read the other two. There are some unanswered questions at the end of this book. I didn't realize the books were connected.
Could not finish. Felt like I had been dropped into a bad translation of a bad text. The story made no sense, the dialogue was laughable. A lamentable use of what could have been a great concept.
i’d say this book was a 4.5. the detail and way the author described ursula and her hate towards everything was so vivid!!! it was easy to read in the fact that i could feel it. not to mention the interesting perspective of how ursula felt more comfortable in her tentacled body than her human one, even tho she was probably considered more beautiful as a human than a sea witch. it was a really really good story
When books are quick reads, it's easier to pick them up. So, this series has become my Wednesday afternoon series. Usually I have about two more hours to read then and so far the books could be read within that time easily. (Not sure if the same can be said about the next books, but that's an issue for next time!) And since the first two books in the series were quite entertaining, I was looking forward to get to this one.
And I have to admit that in a way this book felt a little underwhelming and I have some issues to pinpoint why. I think the main issue is that it never feels like this story is about Ursula. In the previous two books we really got to know the characters before we meet them in the movies and got a lot of background, here it wasn't the case. Ursula's history was told in two chapters and that was all we got to see of her past.
The biggest part of this book was about Princess Tulip, who we've met in the previous book, and the Odd Sisters and Circe. Don't get me wrong. I loved to see those characters again. I loved to see Tulip again and to see how her story continued after her experience with the Beast. I also really loved Circe and how the Odd Sisters do everything for her, even though they have no idea what doing good actually means. But it was not what I expected.
Combine that with the constant switching point of views in the middle of pages and the result is a book that had some trouble really grabbing me. I think what I missed most in this story, was focus. Although all the individual stories were interesting and although all the characters were nice, the story lacked focus. As if the author had trouble picking which of the storylines was most important. And I think especially Ursula, who should have been front and centre, deserved better.
However, I'm really looking forward to the next book still! 2 out of 3 were quite entertaining and nice, so the odds are still in my favor!
I was hoping that this story would make Ursula more likable, or at least that I would come out of the pages with an understanding of her. If the story had ended at the halfway point, I would have *kind of* understood her side of the story. I kind of wish the story had ended with Ursula as the victim, rather than Ursula the kidnapper and backstabber. She was such a fabulously flamboyant character in the animated film, and I was always kind of rooting for her to be the misunderstood woman of the sea. The extra witches took away the attention that I'd wanted bestowed on this fabulous villain; I hope that the next book is more dedicated to the villain than to the witch sisters.
this story is supposedly about ursula, but a CAT had more lines than her… idk i feel like the story wasn’t even about ariel/ursula and the whole tulip storyline was sooooooo unnecessary as well as everything involving circe tbh… like the author is so obsessed with circe in the entire series and for what??? write a novel about her if you care so much but don’t include these villain characters then if the books aren’t focused on them😭😭
anyways someone write a fanfic about ursula and ariel’s mom as sapphics cause that’s what i wanted here.
