Kaitlin Mayer is on the run from the father of her baby – a vampire who wants her to join him in deadly eternity. Terrified for her young son, she seeks sanctuary with the hunters guild. Yet they have their own plans for her son, and her hopes of safety are soon shattered.
When she runs into Matthew Blair, an old nemesis with an agenda of his own, she dares to hope for a new escape. But Matthew is a telepath, and Kaitlin’s past is full of dark secrets she never intended to reveal.
Christine Amsden has been writing science fiction and fantasy for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.
Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. They have two beautiful children.
Kaitlin’s Tale by Christine Amsden is a 2016 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is connected to the Cassie Scot Paranormal Detective series, and it is probably a good idea to have read those books before tackling this one.
If you recall, Kaitlin is one of Cassie’s best friends, so I was happy to see she will finally get to reveal her own life journey, and share it with us.
Kaitlin finds herself in a world of hurt, as her baby daddy had been turned into a vampire and is now determined to ‘turn’ Kaitlin. After her attempts to enlist Cassie’s help fall through, Kaitlin seeks refuge with the Hunter’s Guild, only to find herself caught up in yet another dangerous scenario, where she will once again face an old enemy.
Everyone will also remember Matthew, a strong telepath, once engaged to Cassie. While Kaitlin knows she can’t trust Matthew any further than she could throw him, he may be her only ally, the only one who can keep her and her young son safe.
As the couple form an uneasy alliance, they also find a mutual attraction to each other could be the catalyst for an entirely new regime and the turning point in their lives.
This is one of the very few young adult series, and one of the very few paranormal or urban fantasy series I have kept up with, if that tells you anything.
This series has an amazing ability to branch out with secondary characters and build new stories that are connected to familiar ones, while creating a parallel between the real world and the world of fantasy that could give one pause.
The magical realm, as it turns out, is not all that different from our own, when it comes to the lust for power and control. The prejudices toward those who are different, who do not hold the same high achieving forms of paranormal abilities are shunned, thought of as lesser beings, but, as is often the case, they prove it is unwise to underestimate them.
This story is one of the more emotional ones from this series, and deals with some uncomfortable subject matter as well as introducing more adult sensuality into the equation. This is also the powerful tale of a mother’s fierce love for her son, which forces her to take risks, and put her own life on the line to keep him safe.
The one very prevalent theme I picked up on throughout the story, was trust. Kaitlin, understandably, has some pretty heavy trust issues, but with lives hanging in the balance, she will learn not only to trust, but that she is worthy of love, and capable of love, a power that is stronger than any vampire, werewolf, or any other magical gift or ability.
This companion novel, or spin off, if you will, introduces some new characters as well as bringing back familiar faces, and is complex, absorbing, as well as suspenseful. The answers are seldom pat, and shows how easily one decision, a good or a bad one, can change the outcome of one’s life drastically.
I think in the end, Kaitlin and Matthew will find that accepting the cards life has dealt them, will make them stronger, giving them the courage and strength to face the future and do what is best for everyone.
This is one of the most anticipated stories to come out of the Casey Scott universe! For me personally, I have been awaiting this follow up tale since the conception of baby Jay. A mother who will do anything to protect her baby is a fierce and powerful read. Kaitlin’s Tale is no exception.
Realization has hit Kaitlin that her human life and the life of her child are very much in jeopardy. Xavier is beginning to grow impatient, and Jason? Well, anything that was once left of his humanity seems to be all but gone at this point. Feeling the end of her time as human coming, she must push herself beyond extremes to get her son to safety. With the help of some unlikely allies in the hunter community Kaitlin must humble herself to obtain her ultimate goals.
Kaitlin’s Tail is very much a story of self-discovery and personal growth. Learning to navigate a hostile environment, keep secrets hidden, decide who is helping and who just wants you dead has Kaitlin in a constant struggle for truth.
Unlikely heroes and a heart-stopping race for safety will keep you on the edge of your seat. One of the best reads to come from Amsden to date. Smart, edgy and full of adrenaline!
I’m a huge fan of the Cassie Scot series and am enjoying the spin-off novels as well. Despite that, I was hesitant to start Kaitlin’s Tale. Why? I really liked Jason in the previous novels, even though we didn’t see much of him. But now he’s a vampire and in the Cassie Scot world, that’s a bad thing. A very bad thing. It did in fact take me a while to get into Kaitlin’s story. Jason peeved me off and Kaitlin seemed weak and boring at first. Well, let me tell you, first impressions can be wrong. Very wrong. Kaitlin turned out to be one of my favorite characters of the series. She has a lot of hidden depth if only someone would take the time to get her to open up.
Matthew Blair also had much more depth than expected. Like everyone else who has read the Cassie Scot series, I didn’t think much of Matthew. Yeah, I pretty much hated him. For the longest time in this story, my opinion of him didn’t improve. But Matthew grew on me; probably because he grew as a person during the story.
Once again Amsden has created a fantasy world full of action and suspense – a place I want to live in, despite the danger involved. There’s a lot going on in this world. Intrigue, mystery, political posturing, Kaitlin’s Tale has it all. Although this story can be read as a standalone, I don’t recommend it. There’s just way too much going on and readers will miss subtle hints and clues. And why would you not want to read all the other stories in this series, anyway?
If you’re looking for a well-rounded story that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat, pick up a copy of Kaitlin’s Tale. You won’t be disappointed.
The cover for Kaitlin’s Tale by christine Amsden is fantastic. I love it and I loved frolicking with Kaitlin through the pages of her life. For those of you who have read her Cassie Scot series, some of these characters will be familiar to you.
The story is predictable, yet wonderful to read. I was happy I didn’t have to live through a love triangle, but the romance is there and I find a little love adds a lot to the danger that Kaitlin will have to confront. She will not be alone in her effort to save Jay, her child, wanted by vampires and the magical community she is immersed in.
Kaitlin has all the problems of a young woman struggling to grow up and come to terms with the evil in her life, both the normal kind and the magical kind.
Matthew has given up a chance to climb the stairs to the presidency of the United States, instead striving for the position as leader of the magical community. He makes his share of mistakes, but deep down is good and trustworthy. The problem is getting that across to the “people” that are necessary for him to accomplish this.
There is plenty of magic, manipulation and treachery to go around and I was often confused as to who I could trust. Sometimes your enemy is your “friend”.
This is the first book I have read and reviewed of Christine Amsden's. Needless to say, it will not be my last!
I received a copy of Kaitlin’s tale from Christine Amsden in return for an honest review.
Kaitlin Mayer will do anything to save her baby, her son’s life, save him from becoming a part of the undead community, a vampire even if she has to give up her son and her own life. When the opportunity arises Kaitlin takes her son and runs; runs for her life right into the hunter’s compound with her son. The way Kaitlin sees it this will be the safest place for her son. But when she gets inside she is not so sure that running to the compound was the right thing to do. But it will do for now, she will cross that bridge when it comes time to walk across it or not. For the time being she is just taking one day at a time and whatever opportunity opens up for her and her son she will take it.
Kaitlin finds out after arriving at the hunter’s compound that it may not be on the up and up, that things may not be like everyone’s is seeing it. While she is in the compound she meets up with an old friend or someone she knows at least. The person she runs into is her best friend Cassie’s ex-boyfriend, Matthew. Kaitlin is not real fond of Matthew because of what he did to Cassie. But if Matthew can help her save her son she will definitely let him.
Matthew is at the compound for reasons of his own and when he sees Kaitlin he realizes that Kaitlin may just be able to help him with his cause. She just may become an ally one that could become very useful. When they meet Matthew and Kaitlin alike will go to whatever extremes they need to in order to get what they want and for different reason of course.
Kaitlin is very tough woman who will do whatever it takes to save her baby. The vampires may want to watch out for Kaitlin. Why? Well because as they say you don’t want to miss with a woman’s baby. She just may bite you. Kaitlin is a very smart, clever woman who knows how to get what she wants. Kaitlin may not have any magical abilities of her own or does she? but she has a form of thrall that most women have when it comes to men and she knows she how to use it to get what she wants.
If you have not read Kaitlin’s Tale then I would highly recommend you do oh but even though Kaitlin’s Tale can be read as a standalone I would suggest that you read the Cassie Scot novels first that way you will know more about Kaitlin and the other characters and can get a better sense as to what is going on with a little more background on each character. I would recommend reading all of the Cassie Scot novels as well the companion stories too. They are all so aaammmazzzzzing!
Everyone has secrets, and even the walls might not be what they seem in Christine Amsden’s novel, Kaitlyn’s Tale. But some people have bigger secrets than others, and some don’t even know what secrets they hide as the powerful struggle to control the powerless, and those with nothing struggle to find what’s hidden in their souls.
Readers of Christine Amsden’s Cassie Scott series will be pleased to rediscover all the familiar characters, and to find out more about them. Meanwhile new readers will be intrigued with a genuinely different take on vampires, werewolves and magic, a world full of believable adults just slightly outside our experience, a woman struggling to work out who to trust when she won’t even trust herself, and survivors finding hope.
Author Christine Amsden deals with some serious real-world issues, and creates some wonderfully sensual love scenes between great protagonists, while continuing a story of the power-hungry balancing what they can do against what they should or more probably shouldn’t. It’s a haunting tale raising intriguing thought-provoking questions. But it’s also a great adventure, a pleasingly different romance, and a wonderful novel of hope and recovered strength. I didn't want it to end, though it ends beautifully. And I hope the author will write more.
Disclosure: I was given a copy and I offer my honest review. Also, I love the series!
Very good book. A lot of adventure. Mind magic going on all over the place between Alexander Xaiver the centuries o!d vampire and Mathew . You finally find out Kaitlin's secret and why she is the way she is since book #1 in the Cassie Scot series. And yes Cassie is in This book. Not a lot but some. We finally find out the truth about Mathews and Cassie's time together and what he really did or did not do to her. We get to know a lot more about a few characters besides Katlin. Jason now being a vampire , not knowing what that means, what Katlin is but not truly finding answers why. Maybe her real father
I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't ready for it to end but out did have a very good ending. I hope there's a follow up book maybe on Matthew so we fund out what happens with the white guard and Katlin
Very we'll written, keeps you reading and wanting more. I myself I've the characters of the Scot series and can't wait to zee who and what the next book is about . if Cassie and Evan will be in the next book also. If your a fan of the series this ius one boom you don't want to miss out on. Aot of secrets revealed, sacrifices made for love that you wouldn't expect its a very well! Thought out story with a great ending. Must read!
Kaitlin’s Tale is yet another enjoyable adventure/romance by Christine Amsden, set in the same magical world of Cassie (Non)Paranormal Detective series. This book can be read as a stand-a-lone novel but is better read as a part of the series because the cast of characters overlap. I really enjoyed the cameo appearances of Evan and Cassie, but this story definitely centers squarely around Kaitlin. Kaitlin is in serious trouble as the book opens and I became immediately caught up in her difficulties; eagerly reading as more of her history gets revealed.
Kaitlin is a likable heroine. I loved her musical, self-deprecating voice as she slowly discovers depths within herself as the full horror of her recent tribulations come back to her.
This entertaining novel was easy to read and kept my interest all the way to the end.
I received a copy of this book in return for my honest review.
My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***Received the ebook for free for an honest review
This is the 2nd companion novel to the Cassie Scot series. I really love this series. While you can pick up this book and read it without any trouble, the world experience will be so much more and you will understand references more if you read them all in order.
You never really got much about Kaitlin in the series. This is a wonderful edition to this world. It was nice to finally get Kaitlin’s story, but also to learn more about Matthew.
This book does on some subjects that some be sensitive with regarding to sexual abuse. I’d say this book is new adult. I loved being immersed into this magical world. I hope there is more to come because I want to know more about the White Guard and what happens next.
If you loved Cassie Scot, you definitely don’t want to miss reading this book!
This is the first time I have read anything by this author. It was stated that this book feature's Cassie Scot's best friend, Kaitlin. As I have said I have not read anything by this author before, yet, I was able to jump right into this book with no problems. This is because there was not a lot of focus made on Cassie or any of the events from that series. This book is independent so it can be read by new readers like me.
Kaitlin is a strong female lead. This is what quickly drew me towards her in the first place. The second thing that I liked about this book is that while it featured vampires it was not just a vampire story. Not that I am knocking vampire stories as I enjoy them but after a while they can grow stale when they follow the same type of path. Finally Matthew brought some intrigue as well to the story. He and Kaitlin jived well together. Kaitlin's Tale is a very good read.
Wow! I'm sitting here trying to decide what exactly to say and whether or not this is my favorite Christine Amsden book. Telling you about the book might reveal spoilers, which I hate doing. Telling you my feelings will, most likely, reveal one. (Though if you read the author's USA Today interview you are aware of it). Difficult to decide what to write. I'll do my best though. I first fell in love with the author's writing with Cassie Scot and that series. Those books are among my most prized possessions and favorite reads. Madison's Song and Kaitlin's Tale are branches off of Cassie Scot. They stand alone but are, in my opinion, best enjoyed after reading Cassie's books. Kaitlin's Tale is a rollercoaster of a tale. She is an amazing character. I didn't realize that until after I read this book. Kaitlin is a survivor, in more ways than I imagined. I was about 60% through the book when I saw that the author did an interview. I debated reading it just then. I prefer to read books with as little known to me as possible. But decided that being so far into the book it would be fine. (There was also a relentless voice in my head telling me to read it). I'm happy I did. I learned something about Kaitlin that I never suspected but that was coming my way, (it hits at around the 80% mark on Kindle). Reading the interview helped prepare me and gave me time to corral triggers. A trigger was definitely there but it was better than I expected. (Maybe the number of books I have read this year with this in it helped me handle it. Maybe it is a subtle way of telling me to find some peace with my past.) The author showed a lot of empathy, knowledge and strength with the way she wrote it. I truly felt that she captured, exceptionally well, what living with those memories is like. All the feelings, the inability to really talk about it, the ways it affects you. The author got it right. That Kaitlin was able to share that with Matthew and come out stronger spreads a message of hope. The tale has all the good stuff in it. Magic. Vampires. Vampire Hunters. Even the appearance of a werewolf. It has loads of action. Some breath stealing terror. Some heartbreaking moments. And some steamy love. I would, and have, recommend(ed) it, especially to paranormal lovers. I probably would not give it to early teens. Older teens, especially those who have experienced abuse, might find strength in it, especially if a trusted adult were there to process it with them. Most definitely, though, I would tell adults to pick it up. And to get the other books.
The Cassie Scot series and the additional books that are set in this world are some of my very favorites books to read. They are full of action, drama, and romance and each books stays with the reader long after reading "The End" and closing the book. The romances within the series don't come easily and Kaitlin's Tale is no different in that regard.
All Kaitlin wants is to be loved. When she discovers that she's pregnant after a one-night-stand, she tries to make a go at it with the father, Jason, a vampire hunter. Shortly after Jay's birth, Jason ends up joining forces with the vampires by becoming one. Attempting to do what's best for Jay, Kaitlin decides to move to Jason's "nest" in hopes that they could become the family she's always wanted. Only, her life, and the life of her young son are in grave danger. It seems that Xavier, Jason's sire, has plans for Jay and even more sinister ones for Kaitlin.
In another attempt to do what's best, since moving in with a coven of vampires wasn't such a great idea, Kaitlin flees and heads to the Hunters Guild - and soon discovers that wasn't such a hot idea either. One consolation is that there's a familiar face - Matthew Blair - from the town she's from. Except, Matthew isn't exactly an ally. Kaitlin's not sure what he is but she hopes that he can rescue her and Jay from the clutches of a mad leader that has plans for Jay that are even more sinister than the ones the vampires have.
As with the 4 books in the Cassie Scot series, plus the first book set in the world of Cassie Scot, the dialogue, character development, and writing style of Kaitlin's Tale is well done. The content and plot in the book is fresh and unique. I was pulled into the world of Cassie Scot from day one with its smart heroine and strong hero and it continues with with story of Kaitlin and Matthew.
The undertones of the story are filled with unrealized, sometimes pushed aside, or feelings of undeserved love. Kaitlin and Matthew started off in a bad place, since Kaitlin is still upset at Matthew for things that he did with and to Cassie in previous books in the series. Being together in the compound allows Kaitlin and Matthew to air some things, including a dark secret that Kaitlin has been harboring for a very long time. I enjoyed the development of their story and the end left me happy and satisfied with where things were.
The author writes characters that have deep layers and are emotional. They are believable and easy to love. The novel was written with feeling and realistic emotions - all of which can be felt by the reader. You won't be disappointed with the newest addition to the Cassie Scot world!
Review copy courtesy of the author at no cost in exchange for an honest review.
“Kaitlin’s Tale” by Christine Amsden is connected to the ‘Cassie Scot’ series as well as its spinoffs. This story focuses on Kaitlin Mayer who seems to have consistently made poor life choices, but whose main goal in life has become to keep her son Jay safe—from his vampire father and from the multiple factions who want to use the power he is demonstrating at such a young age. Kaitlin has developed her own usefulness, although she can’t quite see it as such, and when she is forced into proximity with the powerful Matthew Blair, she must decide whether she can trust the man who betrayed her best friend and doesn’t adhere to the rules he requires of everyone else. The trick will be to decide who, if anyone, is the lesser of two or more evils.
This poignant paranormal tale continues to be unique in this genre because of the non-traditional characters who show that they are not perfect. The harsh life that Kaitlin has already experienced has bowed but not broken her and I like the way she displays ferocity and tenacity when it matters, although I ache at her trials and tribulations. There are a myriad of interconnections and I suspect that it would be difficult to read this story as a completely stand-alone title, but I think that one could get the gist of the story using the explanations that are scattered throughout. I think it might be useful to have a list of the characters and how and who is connected, because there are so many different factions and it is difficult to keep everyone straight.
There are unexpected revelations communicated in this story, some of which are significantly heinous, and those who have serious trigger issues would be advised to use caution. The author does a great job of conveying the angst and conflict of her characters and, while some things are resolved and certain persons display wonderful courage and growth, there are still conflicts and power struggles yet to play out. This was a great addition to the ongoing saga of Cassie Scot and her friends and allies and I look forward to learning how things will continue to evolve.
A copy of this title was provided for review which has been submitted to Night Owl Reviews
Having read the Cassie Scot Series and loved them, I was thrilled to be able to read more of the author’s magical world and characters.
Kaitlin’s Tale obviously features Kaitlin, a friend of Cassie’s. Being a non magical resident in a predominantly magical community, she’s felt like a bit of a fifth wheel. When Kaitlin learns she’s pregnant after a momentary lapse in judgement, she follows the father, Jason, and travels from place to place. But, what started out as a grand adventure soon revealed itself to be the stuff of nightmares. Jason is a vampire. All semblance of his human self is gone now, and he wants something from the baby.
Finding a safe haven from the vampire soon proves to be another nightmare. The people of the Hunter’s Guild have no use for a non magical person. Kaitlin is allowed refuge because they also want something from her baby. And the man who could help her is not to be trusted. With no where to turn and time running out, Kaitlin has to make a choice.
I’ve become so fond of this magical community and, while all of the characters have been through some pretty harrowing experiences, Kaitlin’s Tale is darker, right from the beginning. I was immediately drawn into a malevolent, unnerving atmosphere. One that actually had me mentally squirming in my seat. I always wondered if Christine could write something darker, more ominous, and she did a bang up job with this one.
If you’re hesitant about this book because you haven’t read the Cassie Scot Series, don’t be. This can easily be read as a stand alone. And I bet you’ll want to read the other books after reading Kaitlin’s Tale.
Truly hoping there will be more companion novels from the Cassie Scot Series. I’ll be first in line to grab them.
I received a free ecopy of this book from the author for an honest review.
I read the Cassie Scot series by Christine Amsden and was sorry to see it end, so I was thrilled when I learned that she was writing about Cassie’s two best friends. I read Madison's Song, which was good, but I liked Kaitlin and her story with Jason so I couldn't wait to read Kaitlin's Tale. I have grown fond of the characters and the town of Eagle Rock and I was happy to see that Cassie and her husband had a small role in this book.
Kaitlin has been with Jason, the father of her baby and a vampire, for about a year. She has finally realized that she's not going to get the fairy tale family that she had dreamed of. Jason is no longer himself and she needs to get her son away from him. She doesn't really have anywhere safe to go that's close so she ends up going from one bad situation to another. When Matthew Blair shows up, she wants to trust him to take her home but she knows that he hurt Cassie and she doesn't believe that he can be trusted.
I like Christine Amsden’s characters because they are always complex. Kaitlin has always felt like she didn't deserve a good man and has some deep, dark secrets. Matthew can read minds so Kaitlin is afraid that he'll learn her secrets and when he finds out that she is resistant to his magic, he's scared of her because he can't wipe her memories. What a couple of messed up people who might just be right for each other!
Kaitlin's Tale is full of vampires, magic, suspense, and love. It does stand on its own but I enjoyed it even more since I’d read the Cassie Scot series. I definitely recommend all of Christine Amsden’s books, especially if you like series like I do.
I am so glad that we get to hear Kaitlin's story after all she is pregnant with Jason's baby but we know Jason has been changed. Kaitlin is not the same as before, it seems she has been used by Jason for Xavier's plans. She also lives for her son who will one day be a hunter and her instinct is to protect him. When she escapes Jason and Xavier which we all know is hard to do the only place safe to go is to the hunters compound Alexander's compound. Though can he even be trusted as Kaitlin has no magic abilities she is no use to him. When an old frenemy comes to the compound to find some things out it ends up being a rescue mission along with two people finding that they do have feelings for each other. What will become of Kaitlin in the end, will she and her son escape and be safe or will she be captured by Jason and Xavier? We also get a bit of understanding why Kaitlin is the way she is because of her past. She has always been a bit of a mystery but never played a bit part until she got with Jason. She also learns just how strong of a person she truly is. Will Matthew help her understand that those dark secrets are nothing that he cares about it is just her that he likes.
Wow, another great story and an excellent listen. I just love this series and this proved to be just as good as the previous books. This is book 6 in the Cassie Scot series, we met Kaitlin in the previous books and knew a little bit about her story. So It was nice for her to get her own book, to find out more about Kaitlin and her child and for her her to hopefully find her forever guy. All the characters in the series are interesting and there relationships between each other and there common goal is what makes this series interesting. I am off to start the next book to find out what the author has in store for the friends. Kaitlin has come to the conclusion that running away with the father of her baby wasn't her brightest move, well he is a vampire and is just wait for the right time to turn her. As the days pass and her baby needs her less and less she begins to fear for both of there lives and when she gets a chance to escape she takes it. With no plan and knowing the vampire group the father belongs to can track her easily, she turns to the vampire hunters guild. But has she escaped one prison for another? Feeling alone and isolated and having no magical powers what was a heaven soon becomes hell. Something isn't right with the compound and she doesn't trust anyone. Except the one person from her previous life the man who used mind magic to trick her best friend into nearly marrying him. But can she really trust him? With her son's life on the line can she really afford not to trust him? The same narrator has read all the books in this series which is a bonus as she does an excellent job and I really like her interpretation of all the characters.
Audiobook review: Kaitlin’s Tale is book 4 in the Cassie Scot series. On the run from her one night stand, Kaitlin seeks assistance. The slow burn romance and non-stop action made the story engaging and entertaining! The characters are likable and interesting. The narrator did a fantastic job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I absolutely love series where the characters I've come to love get their happy-ever-after. What makes this even better is that the characters in this series are very real, flaws and all.
*I requested this book and am voluntarily leaving this review
We got more of Kaitlin’s back story and so many things make so much more sense! I loved this book just as much as the earlier ones in this series. Writing and narration are both great!
This dynamic of Jason fascinates me. What is he exactly? He isn’t Jason of old for he sacrificed himself to protect his little boy. He isn’t evil like his sire Xavier but he isn’t all good either. He still loves his son very much that is seen in his action even if he is duplicitous in how he shows it. He is very perceptive and smart. But where is he in terms of what he is? He is still finding his place in this new world of his where he isn’t alive but isn’t dead.
Kaitlyn we see her grow so much in this book. She starts out as the girl who wants a HEA. But she begins to see that this isn’t going to happen with Jason and than she wants to protect her son no matter what. That is her biggest strength the love of her son. But she never quite feels whole. She wants to be loved but is afraid no one will. She hides secrets out of feeling shamed even when those secrets are eating at her and her psyche. It is only Matthew who seems to be able to see through her. Matthew a mind mage who is learning about himself as well. Matthew isn’t all together a bad guy just misguided and confused. He wants someone to love him for him and not because of his power. He doesn’t want to turn into someone he doesn’t understand but he also doesn’t understand himself. Matthew learns to trust as does Kaitlyn.
In this wicked kewl book Kaitlyn fights to keep her son safe. She escapes a little too easily if you ask me and ends up in a compound with Matthew and her friends’ Cassie and Evan arch enemy. This is where the hunter’s guild is and who hopes will protect her son. It is also where so many revelations take place. We learn what the hunter’s guild is really about and why the alliance. Matthew shows up at the compound with an agenda of his own but he evolves and grows. When Kaitlyn and Matthew first see each other and begin their journey into becoming allies, friends and than more both are in a bad place. Kaitlyn is scared and not sure who to trust. Matthew is lost on who he is and what he wants. As they learn more about what is happening at the compound they begin to rely on each other but don’t trust each other. Matthew finds out some harrowing things but he also questions himself more and starts to falter. It is Kaitlyn and his strength that pulls him through. When they leave the compound we get more danger and intrigue but they also are allies and kind of friends. It isn’t until they are stranded that they see each other for who they really are and begin to trust one another and form a bond. Matthew opens himself up to Kaitlyn and also sacrifices so much for her and her son. Something Kaitlyn isn’t used to. Kaitlyn tells him all that she has bottled up and he still is there for her. He doesn’t run like she is afraid he will but fights for her. It is the confrontation with Jason that brings these two even closer for they learn that they do trust each other and help each other find themselves and peace. Kaitlyn is really the only one that is honest and real with Matthew. In the end he sacrificed so much and it left him hollow. It is Kaitlyn who pulls him out of his pity party and brings him back to himself. She shows him that the vulnerability and honesty is what people need to see as well as his leadership. They need to see him for him warts and all. They fall in love in a slow and complex way that is alluring and real. This isn’t instant love but a love that is brought about through finding friendship, trust and honesty with the other. They have the chemistry but have to find their way both individually and to each other before they can have the HEA.
The story is complex and character driven. We get the old characters mixed in with new but we also get the world building and the dimension that is created with each action and nuance that is brought about through the writing and the characters. We see growth of characters and bonds form. Alliances created and worlds open up. The story is alluring and descriptive in the show don’t tell way. Kaitlyn and Matthew bring you on a wonderful complex journey of finding out who they are, becoming who they are meant to be and finding their way to one another while helping each other survive the danger of vampires and protecting one another. Once again Ms. Amsden gives us a dynamic story that is complex and draws you in and keeps you wanting more as the characters grow and the story develops into more than you can hope for. Look forward to the next to come out in this series.
When Kaitlin Meyer first decided to run away with the father of her son, she thought she was doing the right thing for her child. Granted, her son's father Jason was a recently-turned vampire hunter, whose own cousin Cassie Scot had once warned Kaitlin - as her best friend - to stay far away from him. Yet Kaitlin sincerely believed that baby Jay deserved to have his father in his life, even if Jason was a vampire.
However, after Jason invites her to join him in eternal life, Kaitlin slowly comes to understand that she could not have been more wrong in her decision. Obviously, no matter how much Kaitlin wants to deny the truth of it - Jason just isn't Jason anymore. So, five months after running away with him, Kaitlin finds herself on the run again. This time, she's running from Jason; his sire, Xavier - a vampire who has existed for over two centuries, and is rumored to be the most difficult to kill - and another recently-turned vampire named Sara; who had once been Jay's nanny as well as Kaitlin's only human friend.
Terrified for her young son's life, she seeks sanctuary with the Hunters' Guild. Kaitlin realizes that no matter how much they may dislike her, the members of this particular Hunters' Guild cannot possibly deny sanctuary to Jay - especially not once they learn that Jay is actually the son of one of their most prolific hunters, Jason. However, even though both she and Jay are treated well, Kaitlin still senses that something is not entirely right.
She can't put her finger on what it is, exactly - but the hunters' treatment of herself and Jay seems almost too conciliatory. It would seem that these hunters have their own plans for Jay, and those plans may or may not include Kaitlin. So, her hopes for continued safety are soon shattered. However, when Kaitlin runs into Matthew Blair - an old nemesis with an agenda of his own - she dares to hope for a new escape.
Matthew Blair is the scion of one of the most well-connected political families in the town of Eagle Rock, and his father is the town's mayor. Although the Blair family doesn't exactly advertise their magical abilities; each member is actually extraordinarily adept at creating illusions and other forms of magical mentalism. Matthew, himself, is an extremely powerful telepath. The closer Kaitlin gets to Matthew, the more she realizes just how much she will need his help to escape with her son.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean that Kaitlin trusts the mind mage. She has seen the aftermath of Matthew's mental manipulations firsthand, and so worries about the safety of her own secrets. Matthew Blair may well be a savvy politician, but he also is an extremely dangerous man to know - capable of using his position and power to help others, but only if that assistance ultimately benefits Matthew Blair. And Kaitlin's own past is full of dark secrets she has no intention of ever revealing...to anyone.
This is actually the second standalone book of Ms. Amsden's that I've had the pleasure of reading. Kaitlin's Tale is a companion book to the books of the Cassie Scot Series, and continues the story of Cassie's best friend, Kaitlin Mayer. The story follows Kaitlin's various trials and tribulations, as she falls in love with Cassie's arch-nemesis.
In my opinion, this story further develops the character and story of Kaitlin Meyer; not that she wasn't already well-developed to begin with as a character within the Cassie Scot Series. Kaitlin just seems to be less needful of a relationship within her own story. I would definitely give this book an A! Although I'm not sure if there are going to be more stories set within Ms. Amsden's world, I can certainly hope that there will be more to come in the future.
(I received this book free from the author in exchange for my honest review)
Going into this book and not reading the Cassie's series I was surprised with how easy I was able to follow the story. The storying tell was smooth, plot holes where non-existence, and there was nothing written that wasn't relevant to the overall story. Everything had a purpose and it made the read fuller and simply outstanding.
From the start I was drawn in by Kaitlin’s will to save her child. She came to the terms with the fact that her lover was dead and was replaced by, well no one really knows, they call them vampires but clearly in this world, they’re more than just that. I never knew Jason before this book so I had nothing to compare him to, but at seeing the cold way he was with Kaitlin and Jey well, I’m with Kaitlin on keeping her boy away from his undead dad. Back to Kaitlin, she’s the female character I’ve been waiting for. Strong, smart, brave. Sure she was broken from past trauma and past lovers, but as broken as she was, her steel will to keep Jey safe had me throwing mad respect at her. She didn’t weather, nor did she become zombified in a cloud of depression, she put on foot in front of the other and thought only of Jey. I was impressed with the way she handled Matt at first their meeting and every meeting thereafter. She’s the hero of this story, no, she was her own knight.
As for Matt, again I didn’t know him from and hole in the wall, and my first impression, his not that bad of a guy. Sure he got problems, and you know is a bit of a self-entitled jerk, but that all seemed to be melting away in this read. He was already changing before he met up with Kaitlin again. She was his last push. In saying that, I quite like him as a character and love interest. It was nice to get inside his head and read his insecurities, to know that he wasn’t the man his “comrades” thought he was. Kaitlin saved him as much or more then he saved her.
I’m in love with this book and I wish this was made into a series about Katlin and Matt. There is so much more I want to read and know about them. Not only the love, but I want to know how the white guard fairs. The story isn’t over yet, the happy ever after hasn’t been fully achieved. I feel like there is much more that needs to be said, you could say there needs to be more closure. If anything that’s the only thing I could say bother me about the story. The open ended ending. Don’t get me wrong the ending was good, but it wasn’t complete. Even an epilogue would have been perfect.
I highly recommend this book, it’s a fantastic read full of action, self-discovery, forgiveness and a mothers fierce love for her child. You don’t need to read the Cassie’s series to enjoy this book. As I said, it’s an easy follow, the world building never stops, and there is enough backstory for you to understand, no, for you to fall into the amazing world that Christine Amsden has created. Take a change of Kaitlin’s Tale, you will not be disappointed.

4 1/2 Stars.
Kaitlin’s Tale is a standalone novel, but is set in Cassie Scot’s world, series by the same name by Christine Amsden. I am a big fan of the Cassie Scot novels and the first spin off novel, featuring Cassie’s best friend, Madison’s Song. It is no surprise that I ended up loving Kaitlin’s Tale, another of Cassie’s best friend just as much. What’s funny though is I don’t normally read spin off novels. And on the off chance that I do, I rarely enjoy it, don’t finish it or don’t continue with the subsequent books. However, Amsden’s spin-off novels had the opposite effect on me. I not only enjoyed the story/plot but I loved being back in Cassie’s world and seeing all the familiar characters and learning more about them.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect in Kaitlin’s book. I didn’t have much of an opinion of her when she was a secondary character. At the beginning of the story she was a depressed, self-deprecating scared new mother, a prisoner of the world’s most powerful vampire and a human no less. Basically the lowest on the chain in the world full of vampires, werewolves and wizards. But as the book progressed, Kaitlin learned to stand-up for herself took risks and most importantly learned self worth and that she deserved happiness just like everyone else. She was a force to be reckoned with and the most powerful players feared her and started to see her as a threat. That is exactly why I love Amsden novels. The female main characters are pictured/assumed weak, but in reality, they are the strongest one. Kaitlin may not be born a wizard, changed into a werewolf or the walking undead and yet she was able to out power and outsmart all of them! I don’t want to spoil anything but for some reason I thought Kaitlin and Jason was going to try working things out…but I’m not complaining about Kaitlin’s other love interest. That was a pleasant surprise.
Bottom line, I loved Kaitlin’s Tale much more than I expected and thought it was a great spin-off novel and addition to Cassie Scot’s world. I don’t say this often, or ever, but I hope we get more Spin-off novels! Or better yet, create a series from either Madison or Kaitlin…combination of both?! After how this book ended, I am dying to know what happens next and if they’re (can’t name names lol) planning to go forward with the unification! And Jay! That kid is a wonderful enigma and I want to see more of him too. I highly recommend Kaitin's Tale to all Urban Fantasy fans. Yes, there are vampire, werewolves...the usual variety but Amsden's writing and storytelling will keep you glued but it's the characters that make you want to stay and continue along on their journey. I suggest starting at the beginning with the Cassie Scot novels; there's a lot of background/history and would make it easier to understand and follow along. These books and Kaitlin's Tale is a must read!
It has been quite a while since I hung out with the characters in the Cassie Scot world, and I did miss them a bit. Kaitlin's Tale is another spin-off to the Cassie Scot series, and the final book in that world. So I suppose reading it is a bit bittersweet.
What I enjoyed about this book is the romance was not the primary focus, like the original series, but not so much like the first spin off, Madison's Song. The romance was a slow burn, with tension and attraction, but allowing a build up of trust and alliances first. I really liked the build up between Kaitlin and Matthew, from sharing their most private fears and truths, to having each other's backs when they needed support.
Another aspect I loved? We have a formerly disliked character who got a chance at redemption and a chance to prove how valuable he is, and what a good leader he can become. Matthew really shows himself and those around him what he's truly made of, and he's certainly more than just a mind mage who wants power.
The plot gets dark at times as we get to know the plans of the creepy but charismatic Alexander and we see what the scary ancient vampire Xavier is planning. While I can't say the story is completely wrapped up with a bow, we get set on the path for closure and the good guys hopefully ending up on top. But it is left open ended enough that should our author decide to revisit this world, maybe she will?
As for the narrator, I liked her better this time than previously, but I'm still not a huge fan of her voice or reading style. She's a bit reporter-like, as I mentioned in my review of Madison's Song, but she didn't rub me wrong this time around.
As a rule, I don’t start a book series in the middle and while this, at the end of the day, is a well-written book, there’s nothing about the blurb for Kaitlin’s Tale that mentions it’s the sixth book in a series that began with the Cassie Scot books:
Kaitlin Mayer is on the run from the father of her baby – a vampire who wants her to join him in deadly eternity. Terrified for her young son, she seeks sanctuary with the hunters guild. Yet they have their own plans for her son, and her hopes of safety are soon shattered. When she runs into Matthew Blair, an old nemesis with an agenda of his own, she dares to hope for a new escape. But Matthew is a telepath, and Kaitlin’s past is full of dark secrets she never intended to reveal.
This became my biggest issue with the book as it’s not a standalone is any way. While Christine Amsden is a good writer who has created an intriguing fantasy world, I struggled to find my footing while reading Kaitlin’s Tale.
So much of the story started before page one. The main characters, Kaitlin and Matthew, have known each other for years, both involved with other characters in important relationships that were developed in the earlier books. Amsden does a decent job of giving the reader some background on these relationships, but it’s spread out within the pages of the book, which left me wondering how it all fit together. I can say the same for the overall plot which picks up where, I’m assuming, Amsden’s previous book, Madison’s Song, left off. There’s magic stealing, mind reading, blood magic, vampires, and werewolves. While there’s a good story in there, it’s not one I could connect with because I felt like I was missing pieces.
If I try to strip away all the above and focus on character development, things improve. I wasn’t really sold on Matthew and Kaitlin as a couple, they felt forced on me, but I can see how they are good for each other and push each other towards becoming better people, accepting things from their pasts that had previously defined who they were. But, these two characters don’t even come face to face until the 50% mark of the book, which is too late for my romantic tastes.
At the end of the day, this book felt incomplete to me. I definitely believe had I read the previous books I would appreciate everything about Kaitlin’s Tale, which is why I gave it 3 stars, but as a standalone it fell short. Heat level: 2.5

In another wonderful companion book to the Cassie Scot series, Christine Amsden has wowed me again!
The core story behind this series had me hooked, and is probably one of my favorite series. The companion novels are just as good, if not better, and give the side characters a chance to shine. Kaitlin wasn't one I had connected to deeply in the main series, but through this book, I got the chance to see her a bit deeper, and get to know her better.
Seeing more of her deepened her character, and ultimately, the entire hidden world the author's painted. I found myself biting my nails, worried for her, nearly bursting out with lectures for her, and the dangerous group of people she'd fallen in with. I love a series where I want to fall into the book, become part of the story, and connect with the characters - this book definitely fits that category.
In fact, every book I've read from this author has been that kind of extraordinary experience. She has a wonderful talent for pulling you into her magic, and it sticks with you long after you've finished reading. I would definitely recommend this book, and it's base series. It may be able to be read as a stand alone, although I would suggest reading the Cassie Scot series first. The details in this world are extensive, and this book will shine far brighter with the foundation set properly.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and cross my fingers for more books in this line. Many thanks to the author for sending me a copy to read and review - I love your books!
*I was given a copy of this book, from the author, to read in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit that it kind of bugs me when authors don't let go of a certain universe or idea they created, prequels, prolonged sequels, POV changes, but give me a good spin-off and they can stay in that world for as long as they want.
I love the world these books create; each and every character deserves to have their stories told. They're all so complex and wonderfully done, there are no minor characters here. These spin-offs are great reminders that everyone has a story and that sometimes (always) they are much more than you could ever imagine.
This time it's Kaitlin's turn. Little background: she had a one night stand with a vampire hunter who then gets turned into a vampire and leaves her pregnant with a child whose powers pretty much almost kill her. Then he comes back and asks her to runaway with him. Because, why not? Alright there might be a few details missing there, sadly I had a hard time remembering certain references to previous books*, but that's more or less the gist of what we get for Kaitlin's story. (*Not that you need to know the previous books to enjoy this one, but it did make it a little more fun.)
And, really, when a book ends with a character considering the option of running away with a vampire how can you not want a follow-up there?
In this we get more of Kaitlin's background and everything that led her to where she is now. I don't want to say everything about her makes sense now, but she might be easier to understand. I think I appreciate her more; I definitely appreciate the telling of her story. It goes so much further and deeper than I would have ever expected, like I mentioned before, it brought Kaitlin into a new light for me.
This story adds so much to the already wonderful universe in these books, I don't think I'll ever get enough of them.

Though Kaitlin Mayer may often refuse to think about the life she's led, she can't help but to do so whenever the opportunity arises. She now has a son she needs to take care of. One she'll do anything to protect. When her life takes an unexpected turn, she soon realizes that not everything is as it seems. To make matters worse, she has no choice but to trust the one man her heart tells her not to--the notorious Matthew Blair. Little does she know, appearances can always be deceiving.
Christine has done it again! Writing another standalone novel that takes place in the same world that surrounds her Cassie Scot series, she pulls the reader in from the moment he/she flips that first page. In this novel, we learn more about Kaitlin's plight and the secrets that surround her. I love the fact that Christine has wound Kaitlin's story around the events that previously took place within the lives of the town's residents, as well as Cassie herself.
While this novel delves deeper into the background that surrounds Kaitlin and Jason, we also get to learn a little more about several others characters along the way. I'm so not spoiling that for you, by the way. If you want to know what I'm talking about, you'll need to read the book. And you're going to want to, trust me. If you've read the previous books taking place in this wonderful universe, Kaitlin's Tale will definitely pique your interest.
I honestly love this world Christine has created. I do wonder if she'll give us more to read about Kaitlin and Matthew, as well as Scott and Madison. It would be awesome to know what they're up to in the future, as well as what happens next with Alexander. Who knows? Maybe we'll have more stories to read someday soon. Thank you for an awesome read, Christine!
