It was winter. It was snowing. There was a girl lost in the woods. And — Sophie felt her chest tighten with fear — a wolf …Vivid dreams – a train – a sleigh ride – a winter palace – wolves – abiding mysteries – lost diamonds. Cathryn Constable packs a lot into her children’s fantasy that hovers for much of the time in a no-man’s-land between realism and fairytale.
Modern life seemed so limited, so ordinary, so small, when compared to the lives of the last Volkonskys. This is a fantasy thriller to be enjoyed for its twists and turns, its settings and its feisty young protagonist, not to be analysed and criticised for any inconsistencies, unlikely situations and incredible resolutions. For myself I enjoyed this for its recognisable tropes assembled from other narratives, all embedded in dreamlike episodes involving sleigh-rides, labyrinthine corridors and northern forests, even as I resisted the critical voices in my head that niggled at tiny little details that to me didn’t always ring true.
