Based on Madeleine Flores' popular webcomic, Help Us! Great Warrior is about a very powerful (but deceptively tiny) Great Warrior who protects her village from evil-doers and looks rad while doing it! Possessing great strength and even greater self-confidence, she's ready to kick some butts and save everyone, especially hunks/pals/handsome skeletons. But Great Warrior has a secret...and will her friends stand by her side when they find it out?
Madeleine Flores' tale of a smart, hilarious, and intensely capable little warrior has a unique sense of humor and manga-influenced look and feel, along with a great message for young readers. Excellent for fans of SMILE, LUMBERJANES, and EL DEAFO.
Everything about this book is cute. The Great Warrior herself, the supporting characters, even the story can best be described as adorable. It's a very quick read, and comparing it to Lumberjanes isn't just market copy. It just made me happy while I was reading it.
Adorable, delightful, and utterly charming! This is a great comic for middle grade readers with a fabulous female protagonist and a sweet message about friendship.
If you ate a bag of sugar, that's about what this reading experience is like. There's a strong focus on cuteness and gags. The character designs are fun, but the plot is pretty basic. Interestingly, there are some old web comic strips included at the end of this book. I actually enjoyed those more than the main story because they focused on the strengths of the author, character and humor, and avoided her weakness, plot.
I recommend this book totally it's so funny! The "Great Warrior" is the laziest warrior I've ever seen! Please read this book it's perfect for 6 graders! It's about a warrior who is to lazy to fight against the bad guys. It's very very funny please read it!
I thought this was stupid. I just didn't get the point of it at all. The only reason why I'm giving it two stars is because I did like the cute illustrations.
Adorable, diverse, and fun. Nothing groundbreaking or especially new here, but it's cute as heck and not just a cookie-cutter story. Would read this again!
I love the inclusivity of different cultures. I love the allowance of being who we really are. I love that Great Warrior is not afraid to be honest and fight with her mom. We all have someone toxic in our lives. Great Warrior shows us to combat that negativity by just being ourselves and allowing the universe to unfold around us. Plus the illustrations and colors are +500!
Bought in a Humble Bundle. I think this might work better as a webcomic, or just not for me at all. I don't think this'll work for older audiences, but YMMV.
I really wanted to like this one, and I did but...not that much. It's cute. Great Warrior is fun, though not intentionally? She doesn't make jokes, her attitude in situations is irrelevant and funny.
The story is just okay. I like the surprise ending but I'm okay with leaving it there. I couldn't connect at all and feel meh all over.
I do appreciate the representation being there. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the story. After all, do we have to justify putting a white man/woman in the same position? No. It just is. That "but why???" whining is white privilege.
I don't think Flores's work is for me, TBH. I felt the same way about Bee & Puppycat. I didn't realize they were the same author until I went to post this review.
I don't see the connection to Lumberjanes and El Deafo, both of which I love.
I'm watching the new She-Ra right now, and I feel like that work drinks from the same stream as this. Except here, our hero is a green blob creature who wears a bow on her head. She's fierce. Fights demons and monsters. Has occasional interpersonal struggles.
It's fun! Shelved in the Juvenile Graphic Novels in my library.
Reminds me of Adventure Time--Great Warrior is basically LSP. A fun comic book, not a graphic novel. Very limited text/plot, but cute overall, if a little overly adherent to stereotypes--Great Warrior kicks butts but she's into everything pink, muscly men, and girly stuff. It would be nice for her to be a hero/warrior without the author going to such lengths to show us she fits the mold
I wanted to like this starting out, but it just...didn't pan out for me. The art is adorable...and that's about it. The story meanders around, never really going anywhere, all the while touting around this amazing coverage of 'issues' and 'presentation' that just wasn't there. It's the less interesting parts of Adventure Time in book form.
This was really cute and I really liked the art style. I laughed it loud at some of the jokes. It had some great representation, but none of the characters were explored in great depth. I felt like there was a lot of backstory that I was missing, but I still enjoyed the story! Cute and quick read overall!
I have the first collection of the web comics from years ago so I picked this up from the library! It was fun to see Greatest Warrior in a longer adventure, but I miss the looser art style and free form silliness of the plot-less comics. Sometimes it’s enough to be a self-confident sword bean without an epic backstory, ya kno?
Everything about this book is adorable! One of the cutest comics I've read, from our protagonist to the supporting cast. Lots of fun little jokes that play on the adventurous hero tropes, and while the ending is too rushed for my takes I really enjoyed reading it. I wish we get more adventures instead of the actual plot, but it was still fun.
I love the art style. I just wish I could draw so badddd. The plot twist sent me away 😭😭 I was kinda shocked that this novel was going to have twists. I felt dissatisfied with the ending because after all these events…that was the ending. Maybe there is a sequel I do not know about. Hopefully
Not a bad story by any means! I actually found it quite funny and enjoyable, but I felt like we only got part of the story and we need more information on.. everything. Especially the characters, and our Great Warrior who doesn't have an actual name... unless i missed it which this comic makes me feel like Im missing a lot. 2.5 is my real rating, I like the art, and its funny but thats about it
Not gonna lie, I found this while shifting kids graphic novels and I was in. I read it in 20 minutes during lunch and fell in love with the Great Warrior. She has all the sarcasm of Lumpy Space Princess and all the love and care of her villagers. Short, cute, made me laugh and be happy.
This graphic novel is all kinds of crazy. It's cute, it's funny, and it's super weird. I don't know what else you could possibly want except maybe more. This would be the perfect read for a bad day.
