The Zombie Chronicles #1

The Zombie Chronicles

Rate this book
Val was bitten by a zombie and now she’s scheduled for lethal injection. Breaking all the rules, Dean Walters snags vials of an experimental serum. But it can’t be tested until Val turns into a zombie: something authorities won’t allow. Her execution is scheduled to happen before transformation is complete, giving Dean only hours to break her out.

When their helicopter crashes straight into the heart of Zombie Land, his rescue mission becomes a fight for survival…and giving up on Val is NOT an option.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a warning to those readers who are looking for a more violent read with gruesome descriptions of blood and gore. This is NOT that type of book. There is lots of zombie action, but this particular story is based more on the action, drama, and survival aspects.

Chrissy Peebles, a practicing nurse, has always loved reading and writing fantasy from the earliest age she can remember. She plotted every single twist she could think of during bedtime stories for her children. When her little ones begged for more adventures, she felt confident enough to let her overeager imagination and sense of humor spill out into her first novel. She lives in Ohio with her husband, two young kids, one hamster, three dwarf hamsters and cat. When she's not taking the kids to Little League soccer, basketball, or baseball, she loves to snap photos as her favorite hobby.

This book is juvenile at best. The characters lack any true substance. Even their back stories need improvement. The plot is not smooth. There were lulls that could have been covered up with background information. You never do find out how the main character is chummy with the "doctor" who has no name. He does have a name but it is only mentioned once but they just keep calling him/her doc. The speed at which the relationships transpire in this book is also unbelievable. The author also did not take time to do any research as is evident in how she had her character start the motorcycle. Motorcycles do not start by merely turning the key. The detail in the story was severely minimal to the point where I couldn't picture what she was trying to describe. I am so glad I got this book free and did not waste my money purchasing this book.

This was, to me, a typical Zombie Apocalypse story. It had it's moments when it was pretty good, but overall it wasn't anything that, for me, would stand out. I would only recommend this book as a filler for those who like this type of genre.

So you take two brothers and their zombie infected, long-lost sister and you send them on a mission to save her. So much potential there. Then you bring in two rather obnoxious super-model-types and, of course, the guys go ga-ga for them. Then you bring on a mountain man who with what - as far as I can deem from the vague description - a superficial knife wound who sleeps more than the dying big sis. In fact, he even sleeps in a jeep through the majority of a massive zombie attack in which the smells-like-a-rotting-corpse-in-a-major-way big sis is passes out on top of him (I don't know about anyone else but that would certainly wake me up). Somewhere along the way the pick up a childhood friend who just so happens to go ga-ga over the big sis whose flesh is beginning to rot off her body already. Screams necrophilia to me. Throw in some really bad dialog and a handful of okay action scenes and you have the entirety of the book.

Nick was flat and rather boring. Dean grated on my nerves and had very little character developement. Jackie and her cousin (whose name seems to have slipped my mind...yeah, she was THAT memorable) whined a lot and had little to no substance to them (other than pretty faces and a bit of the "damsels-in-distress" syndrome). Val was the most enjoyable of all the characters for me but even she fell short - her transformation was supposed to make us believe she was suffering and losing her mind but it wasn't all that believable. Lucas creeped me out with the whole necro-thing. And lastly, Tahoe was dead weight - literally and figuratively - to the other characters throughout the whole story.

Worth the time spent reading it? Nope

Would I recommend it to anyone I know? Nope...unless they read at no more than a 3rd grade level and/or have the maturity level of a 10-year-old

This was my second go at a Chrissy Peebles book. The first (a novella titled Apocolypse: Underwater City) held so much promise. The concept got me really excited and I was sadly let down by juvenile dialog, lack of character or story developement, and a rushed cliffhanger ending that left me questioning why I even bothered. This one wasn't any better. I feel as though I should give Ms. Peebles another chance (the whole "3 strikes" thing) but can't find the motivation to torture myself so. I have four more Chrissy Peeble books in my queue that I will probably never touch for fear of yet another disappointment.

Sorry, Ms. Peebles, but I outgrew your style of writing in the third grade...you just aren't the writer for me. You should try your hand at some children's novels aimed at a pre-teen crowd. I'm sure they would get a big kick out of you.

I originally gave this two stars. Now in the light of day I've changed my mind and have sent it back to 1 star, ok..let's go with 1.5. Why? Just because you can write a book, doesn't mean you should. I haven't read anything else by this author, but zombie novels are not her forte. This sounded like it was written by a 12 year old. The dialogue between the characters was extremely juvenile even though the characters were in their early 20's with one being a cop and the other one in the army. Seriously WTF??? I know you have to suspend belief especially when reading anything zombie related, but I have to draw a line somewhere and I drew that line with the human characters and their actions throughout the story. Let's show a few examples:

The MC is Dean. Is it Walker or is the last name Walters? I found reference to both last names in the book. If you can't get your MC's last name straight throughout the book than you really have issues. Dean does some pretty crazy shit sneaking his "new found sister" out of the hospital where she is awaiting execution for being a zombie. No way this could have went as smoothly as it did. Security is this place must be pretty damn lax. No wonder this Island was over-run in the end of the book.

Dean's brother is Nick. Nick is 22 and has been in the army for only a year and is technically one of their best in cutting down zombies. If he's the best, than I'm pretty scared. He should know that shooting a gun only brings the zombies into the noise, but that seems to be his go to option throughout the book.

The girly girls - Claire and Jackie - Oh boy these two crack me up. Former wedding gown models before the break. They survived by hiding out in a pet store basement when the break happened. They joined up with a group where the men protected the women and treated them like dolls and never taught them a damn thing on survival. On top of that they holed up in some kind of mansion where they spent the last 8 months playing dress up and walking around like The Kardashians. The house get's over run and everyone dies except these two who manage to escape. They join up with the boys and within a few hours they somehow become sharpshooters and veteran zombie killers who don't need a man to protect them. However their ok with throwing themselves at the brothers like a bunch of sex starved hoochie mommas. Blech...

The only positive about this book is that it was free. Otherwise you might want to get the cliff notes on this and pass it up!

You know, I’ve been sort of harsh with my ratings on zombie books lately. Maybe because there are so many to read, maybe because I have actually read so many, or maybe it’s just because it is still one of my favorite genres but I have read so many lately that I am starting to get bored!

So, it was with an ample amount of trepidation that I set out to read this. When I found it I was excited but that excitement bailed on me before I could even open to page one!! Fortunately for me, and for many zombie lovers out there, this is not just about the zombies, this is about what we would do to save someone we love. And for that, I love this book!

Firstly the premise is pretty understanding, Val was bitten and Dean would do anything to save her. Now, this does also have some fun zombie stuff like…

“chainsaws weigh around ten pounds, compared to two-pound weapons like machetes, crowbars, trench spikes, or baseball bats. Remember, we’re looking ofr anythign that can crush or decapitate a skull in one blow. If it can’t, there’s no use lugging it around.”

And then you have the people… All of them are very different but we meet Claire and Jackie, well, they are just clueless! How can two people be SO clueless in a zombie apocalypse! It just killed me. But at the same time made me realize that people handle situations in different ways…

“Claire rolled her eyes. “I’m really not into violence.”

“I don’t care what you’re into. It’s all about survival now,” Val said. “‘Cause those things will tear you apart. They’ll munch on your flesh-gnawing, biting, and chewing-all while you’re still alive watching.”

Jackie threw a couch pillow at Val, “C’mon! That’s gross!”

All in all Zombie Chronicles has my favorite parts of zombie books. This is why I still hold a huge obsession with them, it’s crazy and horrific but at the same time, it’s dramatic and moving, and above all it’s just plain fun! Which describes this book exactly!

I've been a huge fan of this writer ever since reading Agartha's Castaway and this one didn't disappoint. It starts off pretty fast paced:
Dean is young man leaving in world infested by zombies, but it wasn't always like this. Before a virus claimed the world and most of its inhabitants, he led a sheltered life with his parents and brother, Nick. Nick is a pilot now, who risks his life on a daily basis to help those who haven't been infected yet by keeping them safe. Dean has always looked up to his brother. He's always wanted to be like him so when he meets Val, who's just been infected by the virus, Dean is hell bent on saving her. Without telling his brother, he steals a few vials of a new trial treatment against the virus and hides Val inside Nick's helicopter, then persuades him to fly them out of their safe fortress to the nearest city. His plan is to take Val away before she's being executed and then wait until the virus kicks in so he can administer the new treatment to save her. But when the helicopter crashes, leaving them in the middle of zombie-infested territory, and Nick discovers Val, all of Dean's plans are thrown overboard. Slowly but steadily, secrets are revealed and new allies and adversaries join the little crew on their way out of the danger zone.

This was a great, action packed book that kept me turning the pages late into the night. Nick is a great character, who matures as the story progresses. He's likeable and has a sharp mind and a strong will to survive. I really liked that about him. My favorite character was Lucas, who's a bit of a tech whizz, because he was funny and a great friend. The writing was at times funny, at times sad, but consistently filled with tension and drama. I can't wait to see where the story goes in the sequel.

I am torn between giving this book 3 1/2 stars or 4. The story was very fast paced and if filmed by the right director it would make a good movie.

I wanted to like this book more but I couldn't. The plot seemed okay but I never felt connected with the characters. Though there were zombies it seemed more of a romance storyline. Dean and Jackie pairing up, then Claire and Nick then they ran across a friend of Deans who just so happens to like Dean and Nicks sister (the last of the 3 girls).

Maybe it's my aversion to romance stories or maybe it's coming down off of my Zombie Fallout high but it was just lacking for me.

I'll try the next one and see if it grows on me.

Written quite poorly.
Lack of character and story depth. Very stereotypical and shallow.
Felt a little tacked together. A plot seemed to spring out of no where with only 25% of the book to go. The whole thing was quite predictable.
I just really enjoy zombie action and that's what saved this book for me.

I found this story in a collection I found on Amazon called "Suspending Reality" by the same author. I wasn't a fan of this one. I couldn't finish this story. There were way too many issues that made me not want to continue.

Questions/Comments for The Zombie Chronicles:

There was a timeline issue with this story. I guess I shouldn't surprise given the rest of the stories. It had only been a single year since the zombie apocalypse, how in the world would everything basically be back to normal in the "walled-in cities protected by towering concrete walls?" How in the world would those walls have been created so fast?

Why do the majority of authors write zombie stories and have the characters not even know what zombies are? They're referred to as being possessed people, cannibals, "beings," people with special effects. And why would they have green skin?

How was Dean allowed to do as much as he was, for example, getting antibiotics for his area "doc." Yet, he didn’t carry a weapon. What was his title? Why would his brother have needed a "special clearance" to leave?

Given 'A' blood type is the most common and it was those with A and O who were struck with zombism, there couldn't be very many people left. So how had those still alive accomplished as much as they had already? Such as having electricity and water.

Similar to the first story in the series this was part of, there was a lack of security in this story. Why wouldn't there be a guard outside the room where the future zombies were located? Why wouldn't those people be tied down or restrained in some way, considering they were sentenced for death?

A zombie cure that can only be given once the person becomes a zombie? No... Val stated the cure hadn’t been tested yet (recently acquired future zombie). Lucas says it has (a zombie-fighting soldier who didn’t hang around there often). Who would more likely know?

How big was the copter to where Dean had no real issues going inside (climbing through all this supposed firey debris) to get Val out?

What happened to Sherrie?

"It's going to take us three times as long to get back..." Ah...they were walking, not flying, so it would take longer than that!

Dean convincing Lucas that Val's their sister because she had blue eyes/brown hair "in those exact shades." How did Val know where she belonged?

Nick was all about following protocol and being safe in Zombie land, yet didn’t check the two girls that showed up.

They found a mansion on the main road? And left Val and girls in a glass house, before checking for anyone inside?

"I didn't know them all that well yet, so I naturally didn't feel like I could trust them with my sister's safety." Even though he left her unconscious with them.

A sledgehammer wouldn't really be a good weapon. Why? Because they're heavy and wouldn't be good when it came to swinging at multiple zombies.

Why was Val so negative toward the girls? They didn't want to fight because they were scared. Would that be surprising given their situation? No.

How would the zombie's teeth be able to cut through leather?

Before going back in the house, the guys found two jeeps and decided then that it was a good idea for them to check out the house for people inside. Even though the girls had been inside.

Playing the piano, when zombies were just around, during a zombie apocalypse. Sure.

Tonight I began a very dangerous, and frightening adventure.
The land of free e books.
The first book I read is included in the crimson fire set, it includes 10 books by two authors, which is free for your kindle on amazon! (http://www.amazon.com/Crimson-Fire-bo...)
The first book was called the zombie chronicles. I was afraid. First off I hate zombie books, second off, about three pages in I realized it was written like a semi okay quality fan fiction. The action was fast paced, along with everything else, but not in a good way. Things happened far to fast for them to make logical sense, and many of occurrences and character development was simply to sudden, (for example on character goes from a stuck up girly girl with to many morals to pick up a gun, to a bad ass killing machine with great aim.) along with the introductory chapter, we have a guy on a Ferris wheel, awkwardly explaining his first date, when suddenly his dad calls him panicked, and people start dying. this book is set a year after the zombie apocalypse started, and well, a lot of the events simply were not logical. One of the guys had an iPod with him. And they found at least 7 abandoned vehicles with keys, or gas, conveniently at the ready.
Now all this makes this sound like it was a bad book, but it honestly wasn’t to awful! In fact it was fairly decent! The characters, mainly one of them, was really funny and like able, the dialogue was witty and light heart ed which helped with the whole apocalypse thing. That’s my number one issue with zombie stuff. You have this constant stream of depressing event after another, this book was funny, light heart ed, and it wasn’t filled with a thick stream of death, which was a nice change, also the plan of action the government took after the zombies happened seemed pretty logical, they built walled cities, and trained a strong military in each one, while having scientists work on a cure. I personally thought it made sense.
I also have to commend the author for her fantastic attention to detail! When she described stuff, she described it very well, with rich details, especially when she was referencing a zombie, the description was enough to make me feel a bit sick.
Also the ending was a great cliff hanger, and now I’m determined to get the second book in the series to find out what happens!
All in all this wasn’t the best written, and had it cost money I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but if you have nothing else to read, it’s a pretty short book, and has some pretty like able characters. So those of you who are into zombies, but don’t want to feel sad at the end of the book, why not!

I really wanted to like this book. I've read a lot of zombie fiction from various writers and I have read books that were stomach turning such as Pariah and action filled such as Plague Town. This book left huge gaping holes where plot should have been filled in. The entire first half of the book is spent arguing with one person or another and then falling into teenage lust with the conveniently placed girl of a similar age. The second half of the book picks up with better descriptions but the same plot devices are reused in the same book. Boy drops/loses gun and becomes stuck with zombies between him and the exit. The biggest slap in the face is that you get to the last few pages and it's a complete cliff hanger. I don't mind books going into a series but I do object to books that don't have an end. This book just stopped. You turned the page and there was no end at all. Even if it's part of a set it should have a feeling that you completed a book before you move on to the next one. This author has never learned what denouement is. You can tie up some threads and leave others to connect the books. This book did not resolve anything it actually opened up more threads to follow. I doubt I will read the second book unless someone loans it to me or buys it for me because I am very disappointed.

The thing about zombies is they never die, except in inventive and convoluted ways, and they never go out of fashion. Since White Zombie, the 1932 indie-flick starring the unpredictable Bela Lugosi, movies, books, TV series and video games have been a staple (cannibalistic?) diet of this lively and adaptable genre.

The Zombie Chronicles follows the codes of the genre and is written for young adults with a warning that there is some mild violence - though no more than what you might see in an episode of Family Guy.

Here we find caring, thoughtful and all-round good human being, Val, gorged by a zombie and the heroic Dean - the brother she didn't know she had - fighting the clock to get her the serum that will cure her before she fades into zombiehood. It all seems to be going well until the helicopter transporting Val to safety crash lands in the heart of zombieland and teenaged Dean must fight his way out against overwhelming odds. Cue: the hero's journey, and we are with Dean every step of the way.

Chrissy Peebles launches a series with this first book and those who pick it up are sure to look out for the next one.

The Zombie Chronicles (Apocalypse Infection Unleashed, #1)
by Chrissy Peebles is a superb teenage horror novel and a must read for all zombie fans. The author's style is fresh and exhilarating full of tongue-in-cheek descriptions and zombie in-jokes - such as - "Besides, I'm pretty sure you like me for my brains and not my looks."
3 siblings Dean the 1st person POV, his brother Nick and long-lost sister Val, team up to fight the undead hordes that have swept across America. The action is furious and wonderfully gory and the descriptions of the zombies are pure brilliance. This reader could not get enough of the author's awesome style, the clever storyline, the cool characters and the way the scenes blended one to the other with seamless momentum.
The cliffhanger ending knocked me for a loop and made me scream. Thank goodness the author has published the series or this reader would be gnawing his fingernails to the bone. Yummy!!
FIVE STARS for this YA Horror and very highly recommended.

Why does this book have some many good reviews?!?!?!

This has to be the worst zombie book I have read this year! The dialog is what did it for me! It is the way these people talk, like they are in a cheesy B-rate film and then the repetitive phases. Example: "Come on man", "Just spit it out" and my all-time favorite is "Open a can of worms". Really you couldn't take the time out to rephrase some of this stuff; it is not like this is your very first book!
The characters aren’t developed one bit and I formed not one single relationship with them. Matter of fact, I would have preferred they all got killed for being so stupid! And by stupid, I mean they were stupid. First let’s take the fact that the main character meets his sister for the first time, then turning around risking the lives of his mom, dad and brother to save her. Since from the introduction of Val, I couldn’t stand her, she goes from weak to a cop in her pre post apocalypse life! So to say the least this books event was unreal and a little confusing! I will say that I won’t be reading any more of this series.

The Zombie Chronicles by Chrissy Peebles, Wow! What an action packed thrilling read. Hooked from page one, I couldn't put the book down. There was so much going on and just like the characters I couldn't stop, I had to keep going.
There is plenty of awe and shock value, gruesome details, spine tingling descriptions and twist and turns along the way.

Dean and Nick learn they have a sister, Val and that she has been bitten and needs the cure, problem one, she can't have the cure until she changes into a zombie. Traveling with her and a few others they pick up along the way, they head for the Island where their parents are and the high walls of safety from the zombies. With plenty of well developed characters and scenes this book drew me in from page one and held my attention. At the end I knew I had to have book 2.

A great zombie read and I can't wait to read more Chrissy Peebles novels.

The beginning of the book left me wanting more info. I felt like the story goes right into the action without laying out the ground work for getting to know the main characters. I don't mind action from the get-go but I felt like the story was missing elements and not filling in properly. The characters seemed hollow as did the storyline.

The beginning also seemed rushed. I almost read right passed the part where they get Val out because there was no detail that made it believable. Dean was in and out just like that and I felt like there should have been more to it. The middle through the end of the book is when I started to become more interested in the characters. They seemed to grow.

The story is full of action and gore which is great and really what kept me going. Toward the end even the storyline and characters held my attention. Not a bad book but there could have been more meat (no pun intended) to it.

On the run with their sister Dean and Nick are determined to cure her with the vials they stole.
The fate of someone bitten by a zombie is imminent death by execution. The vials could potentially hold the cure but the powers that be no longer wish to test it as the infected have to turn first then have the vial administered.

The whole book is based around three siblings. Two brothers and a sister they have just recently found they have. Their main goal is to wait for their sister to turn so they can't text the cure and hopefully save her life. By the end of the book she still hasn't turned. The ending is abrupt with no conclusions at all. It's not badly written but I felt there was no actual depth to the characters. There is little to no background story to fill in any blanks. 3 star rating because it does have potential and if I do decide to pick up the next in the series I am hoping for more growth in the book.

I needed some beach reading, so I picked up "The Zombie Chronicles." It pretty much fit the bill, brainless and requiring little in the way of critical thinking. However, it was not what I would even call a good beach read.

The characters were not especially attractive, and the characterizations were weak. Individuals behaved in ways that were out of character, and the plot was pretty thin (run, kill some zombies, run some more). What especially bothered me was the way that, in the most critical circumstances, the characters chatted - a lot. Don't get me wrong, I love opera where frequently the dying heroine sings for ten minutes before she succumbs, but she usually is singing something important. In "Chronicles," this is not the case; people seem to talk just to hear themselves talk.

Pass this one by - there are plenty of better zombie reads out there.

I picked up this book cheaply for my Kindle through Amazon and didn't really know what to expect from it. As far as zombie books go, this one is good. I liked it but didn't think it was amazing. I have recently read World War Z so the bar was high. The story of two brothers and a sister racing back to a secure area with a possible cure for the virus. The sister is very sick and very much in need of the medicine before she turns. A man they meet along the way steals the vials of medicine knowing if he brings the vials back to civilization he will be a hero.

The plot was interesting, you become emotionally invested in some of the characters, others not so much. I will definitely be reading the next in the series to see how it plays out.

This was almost painful to read. There was a distinct lack of focus - characters would leap from emotion to emotion, on one occasion, three times in one page, descriptions are sparse or unhelpful and the prose itself is painfully dry and often tactless. In an attack, a character's boot was bitten and it yanked him off-balance but then he was getting into a fighting stance and fighting someone else. The main character can also be really gross and I have a virulent hatred for 'not like other girls' and the girls they meet are all (as far as I got) airheads and scantily clad opposed to he and his soldier brother and Val, who shoots and bosses everyone around.
There was nothing, to me, that I found redeemable or even bland. I found it all terrible.

A Barnes and Noble Free Fridays book. I paid too much!

The book flowed well except for all the redundant ways to state the characters were in danger and life isn't how it used to be.

Descriptions of various scenes left me confused. At one point a character is hiding in the trunk of a Jeep. Huh? I could never get a visualization of what model of Jeep has a trunk. So, where did this guy hide? I still have no idea.

The dialogue seemed adolescent and forced. Biggest issue I had was the cliffhanger ending. I don't mind series novels but I cannot stand a cliffhanger so poorly written it is the equivalent to the joke: knock, knock. Whose there? Buy the next book!

Do not waste your time.

There's a ton of apocalyptic fiction, particularly apocalypse zombie fiction, out there right now, and finding good books in this milieu is an enormous sorting process.

This book did not make the cut. It was a steaming turd from the beginning, with vapid stock character archetypes and predictable plot lines, that only stank more as I read it.

Note to author: Come on, dialogue has to be believable. If I'm in a house surrounded by the undead, they are breaking in and I am trying everything I can to get safe and get away, my first words aren't going to be "Oh my gosh!"

Well, this isn't the worst I've read this year. It isn't the best either. Also, I had no idea this was a teen book till I was already reading it. Since the book, I picked before this was so terrible I just powered through this one. Why waste money on two bad books. Might as well at least read one. Because this book was designed for teenage thought I found myself wanting to strangle several of the characters. The last thing I'll say is that it ends on a cliff hanger so don't get your hopes up for any resolution.

Very well written and a true page turner. I was a bit disappointed that it left with such a cliffhanger at the end. I was ready to purchase book 2 to find out what happens, but read several reviews of the 2nd - 6th books just to find out that this is part of a seemingly never ending story line. I'm not going to pay $3 per book to STILL not find out what happened to VAL in book 7. Great writer, horrible parceling out of chapters/books.

this was interesting but not great. I felt like I started reading a book but skipped the important bits. I wish they gave better descriptions of the zombies - in one instance they are slow moving and dumb, the next they are fast one minded creatures.
Also the whole romance thing killed it for me. imagine that, two hot and well dressed girls just happen to be running to them for help in the middle of Zombie land!
Hm, now I think these 3 stars are pretty generous.
