Something wicked this way comes.

FBI Agent Ryan “Mac” McGuinness and con man Henry Page are on the run again. This time they’re headed back to where it all began: Altona, Indiana. Population: some goats. Henry’s not happy about lying low at the McGuinness family farm, but they’ve got nowhere else to go.

While Mac fights to clear his name and Henry struggles with whose side he’s really on, a ghost from the past threatens to destroy everything. And those aren’t the only storms on the radar. Cut off from both sides of the law, Mac and Henry must rely on their tenuous partnership to survive.

If Henry can convince himself to let Mac see the man behind the disguises, they’ll stand a chance of beating the forces that conspire against them. The course of true love never did run smooth, but for the two of them, it might be their only hope.

“Who would want to eat plain old macaroni without cheese?”

I became utterly charmed by the wonderful giggle-fun first book. You could say I fell in love with these characters —the FBI agent Mac and the rascal Henry— and their friends and family. The second book part was just as enjoying.

#1 - The Two Gentlemen of Altona (4 stars)
#2 - The Merchant of Death (4 stars)

Mac & Cheese didn't dissapoint this time neither
What a ride. I'm exhausted once again.

Indianapolis, Indiana U.S.

A con character who changes shape like a chameleon and a slightly pudgy bald FBI agent who longs to do a great job and catch 'bad' people ...and now also this tempting and so ingenious guy.
 photo b5968f80-cdbc-49eb-9e09-c2b782a46409_zpsceupwn9b.jpg

‘And it was ridiculous that the guy who wanted to see through him was Mac. Mac. Bald, cranky, flappy-armed, fellout-of-a-Rockwell-painting FBI agent Mac. So fuck him.
Yeah, fuck him.’

# Special Agent Ryan “Mac” McGuinness is a hard working law-obedient agent who first missed a chance to get a criminal suspect when he was tricked by the witness at the crime scene. A witness with a very attractive neat little butt, a credible smile and very quick feet.

# Con man Henry Page (aka Sebastian Hanes), is a Shakespeare-quoting, ethically-challenged, egg-obsessed 25 years old, —a fleeing soul— who prefers to keep his distance from the law.
‘Because this, this right here was not a breakdown. Not yet. He took a deep breath and held it at bay. “And don’t think I don’t know how irrational it is to be pissed at you about that, okay? I’m channeling my inner child right now, and fair warning, he’s a whiny fucking brat.”

***********************************************************

It felt in many ways like Henry's book this time. There were partly more hard intense moments with a slightly serious tone. Both more, very understandable, anxiety and maybe also those needed explanations about Henry's old fears. Everything isn't solved but it's a start. I belive in its "salvation'.

I may admire (like loooove) grumpy bald Mac but Henry certainly has the ability to create scenes; from kinky sexy hot to insightful and heartbreakingly sad, to exciting adventurous, and best of all most often, outrageously funny. It is impossible to not feel for him. He isn't fully trustable but gosh he is a cutie. I can see why Mac is totally enchanted and charmed.
“You want some of this ass, Mac?”
“I want all of that ass. And the smart-mouthed sidekick it’s attached to.”
“I am the best sidekick ever.” Henry went up on his toes, eyes falling shut briefly. “My action figure would sell more than yours.”

 photo image.jpg3_zpsqjp6xksn.jpg

All banters and jokes between Mac and Henry are truly laugh-inducing and I chuckled or just smiled almost constantly. In between, I cried, chewed my nails out of breathless tension and I really feared the worst sometimes. There were actually some very tough topics here and I just wish I could change 'things' and let it just be a lovely cuddly nice tale. But nevertheless the crime parts and the suspense is well done.

~ Hurray for these brave 'girls' (incl a superhero mum). ~

***********************************************************

Season with a little sugar sweetness, a measure of nasty salt, a dash kinky sour and you get a funny taste sensation.

These lovebirds are just freaking adorable sweet together. Three books, and there may be some minor lacks etc, but I must say that I L.O.V.E and want to hug these books and amazing adorable characters. Not just Mac and Henry, the whole bunch.

Sincerely Recommended Amusing M/M Books!!

Pretty please, Henry & Rock!! ~ I wish and hope it will be more in the future. The last line was after all: ‘THE END - FOR NOW’

I LIKE - and gives a big applaud, just hilarious fun

Unfortunately, not as awesome as The Merchant of Death, but if you can get through the boring first 2/3rds (yup, that much!), the last 1/3 is pretty great.

I think part of my issue with this story was that it was so heavy. I liked the lighter feel of the first two stories, and this one just sort of depressed me. Henry and Mac are in a lot of trouble here, and the book is weighed down by that fact. It is hard to pinpoint what exactly it was that made this so slow going, but I think it was just missing that spark, that pizzazz of The Merchant of Death.

I actually debated DNFing this one until things starting taking off towards the last 1/3 of the story. We get SO much action at the end, and a little bit of heat (thank GOD!), and we get to see Henry and Mac's relationship get to the next level. I couldn't put the book down during the last 25% and my rating bumped up a whole star just for the intensity. I wish the ending didn't feel so... unfinished, but I left the story with a pleasant, contented vibe.

While still well written, I wish I had gotten a little more juice out of the final book in the Playing the Fool series.

this series was a really fun & enjoyable read overall. made me laugh, made me cry, made me roll my eyes, made me facepalm… i truly went through the full range of emotions while reading this.

i found both henry and mac annoying at times, but they definitely grew on me throughout the series more and more. i learned to love all their little annoying quirks instead of hating them.

if you want a humorous, sexy, fast paced read, i definitely recommend this series!

This book completes the "Playing the Fool" series, giving us closure after the cliff-hanger endings of the first two installments. I really enjoyed watching Henry and Mac banter and argue and finally allow each other some entry into the important parts of their lives, and hearts.

The best part of this series is Henry, with his painful past, and his divided loyalties between his sister Viola, his well-worn persona as Henry the unemotional con man, and his relationship with Mac, the man he's coming to love. Henry covers his emotions with jokes and snark and banter. He tries to play all the angles, even when he knows he's pushing too hard. And he's loyal and loving, although you have to dig deep to get him to admit it. This story has moments of real pain for Henry, as well as moments of warmth.

Mac is a solid, stalwart foil for Henry's erratic brilliance. Mac's family, who play a significant part in the story, are warm and fun, although the niece Cory is a very precocious nine-year-old at times. They offer something to Henry, and to Vi, that they haven't had for a long time - the support of stable, accepting, affectionate parental figures. Of course, the mystery plot, complete with bad guys, invades that warm sanctuary in a dramatic way.

The action towards the end becomes fast and furious, and a bit unbelievable. A couple of bits hit pet peeves of mine, and I personally enjoyed the slower, more emotional moments of introspection better. But there is some fun to be had, a successful wrap-up of the tension and the case, and a workable happy ending. There's a light feel to these books, for all the painful past that Henry is dealing with, and the action sequence fits with that lighter tone. A fun series, and well worth a read, especially if you are a fan of both snark and thriller-mystery action.

Entertaining, full of action, but … but …

Somehow the romance got drowned a bit in it all.
I might have wished for more in-depth conversations between Mac and Henry. Conversations that addressed the issues of each man, but particularly of Henry.
While there is a lot of character development for Henry, and quite a bit of detailed involvement in his thought processes, I missed ‘more’ on the relationship development here.

I also wasn’t overly fond to be that much in Viola’s POV, as interesting as her character is.
And to say you need to suspend belief in what’s going down on the action part is probably an understatement, but then again … as I said … it was rather entertaining, if a bit predictable.
However, I did enjoy the angstier feel in this book.

All in all, quite an easy series to read and to digest!

I'm feeling kind of sad now because I've just finished the last book in what has been one of my most favourite comedy thriller series ever! I reckon Lisa and JA have created two characters who, if they wrote about them till the end of their writing careers, I'd never get tired of. I absolutely adore Mac and Henry. As a pairing they've worked on every level for me. I've laughed at their snarky, snappy banter offs, snorted at the running jokes, tingled at the sexual tension generated, got hot under the collar when they've finally got down and dirty and been on pins every time they've got themselves into the sort of "Oh Crap!" kind of trouble you can't ever see them getting out of!

To fully enjoy the ongoing storyline, you have to read them in order to get the gist of what's going on between these two guys both plot wise and emotionally. What started out as just a sarky, crazy caper, smoke and mirrors style crime comedy, has evolved into a far more intricate murder mystery with red herrings, sub plots and loose threads coming together to form a much deeper web of deception and subterfuge. But for me as much as I've loved the crime background, it's always been about Henry and Macs relationship; or as Henry sees it..."The Mac and Cheese Show". And yes Henry, I'd buy the merchandise! LOL!

As the plot has thickened, so has the partnership and characterization of the two MC's. I've loved watching them go from a very funny 'straight man and his sidekick' duo, into two pretty complex, emotionally driven men with depths of character that go far beyond their snark and witticisms...

I really enjoyed this series! The banter and teasing between the MCs was quite funny and I couldn't help but laugh out loud several times. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. One of the MCs is dealing with a traumatic past and there are references to past sexual abuse. The mystery was good and I was as surprised as the MCs to find out who was behind the murders.

Nick J. Russo's narration was great as always!

Possible spoilers below.

Book 3 of the Playing the Fool series begins with a very tense scene. Mac and Henry are on the run again, and this time they have Viola with them. Faced with external threats from all sides, Mac and Henry have to put aside their quarrels and focus on staying a step ahead of their pursuers.

Firstly: the family farm?! Really, Mac? I'm with Henry on this one. When making a run for it, going to the old homestead is a big no-no. If it wasn't for Mac's awesome parents, I would have been cursing Mac the whole time. Instead, I was merely disguspressed. Okay, back to the review.

What is very clear is that 'Tempest' is a lot more "serious" than the preceding two books in the series. Both The Two Gentlemen of Altona and The Merchant of Death were heavy on the humour and a bit lighter on the mystery aspect. In book 3, the humour takes a back seat and we get a whole lot more mystery, action and angst. I definitely enjoyed the change of pace, and was very happy with the outcome. I had no clue what would happen next and was on the edge of my seat while reading. The action scenes were satisfyingly-badass. I think readers will be very surprised and entertained by the twists and turns this story takes.

I can also say that I finally connected to the two MCs as a couple. So far, I've loved them both as individual characters, but their romance just seemed very implausible. I was really beginning to wonder whether I could make myself believe that Mac and Henry could make it together. But then, finally, there was communication. We finally see the two confess their fears and feelings. Henry showed a lot of character depth in book 2, but it much lot further in this book. Honestly, I didn't expect the amount of angst that he brought. And I loved how Mac finally began to understand what made Henry tick, and that he figured out how he could become Henry's rock without being patronizing.

There were more sexytimes here than in the previous books, though not by much. I've gotta say, I'm disappointed that HenRock didn't explore the further. I could have sworn that Mac would be all over that. I'm also not a fan of the too-perfect ending, but it definitely sets up the possibility for more sequels so I won't complain.

This series has a lot going for it. There's romance, angst, action, mysteries and even comedy. I've definitely enjoyed reading it, and I'm looking forward to what J.A. Rock and Lisa Henry have in store next!

Stormy Crescendo

Well this was not all fun and games, there is fun part of course but underneath the mask all 'actors' wear on stage, there is also the pain, the soft parts, and those are here too.

I was going to try and describe Mac and Henry together but I find that Henry and Rock do it much better than me:
Sometimes he felt like one of those rugged, taciturn heroes from a nineteen-forties movie, who was stuck with some talkative, troublesome broad with a wit as sharp as the cut of her jacket. Driven to distraction by the sway of her hips and the curl of her smile and the way she just didn't listen. Then, right in the final scene of the movie, the hero would grab her by the wrist and crush her to his powerful chest.

"You are the most irritating, annoying, confounded woman!" the hero would begin, and he'd kiss her almost violently until she shut the hell up.

That was Henry. Driving Mac way past distraction and straight to the kissing part.

Left me with a smile on my face. Happy at where they are and I definitely wouldn't say no to more.

Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove
O no; It is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests, and is never shaken

Tempest is the third (and final) book in Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock’s “Playing the Fool” trilogy. Based on my own experience, this series is best enjoyed by doing a marathon reading. That way, I wasn’t annoyed with the cliffhanger from the previous two books. I feel like I could appreciate Mac, Henry, Viola, and other characters better. The authors are able to blend in romance, mystery, and action as one satisfactory reading. They keep the pace quite swift, throwing a few twists along the way. The final action at the farm pretty much brought me to the edge of my seat. However, I must say that the winning element, for me, is definitely the character development in that of Henry.

While hiding at Mac’s family farm, Henry is forced to face his own fears, his primary instinct to run and takes Viola away, because at the same time, Henry also knows that his feelings for Mac are deeper and stronger than anyone else. Can he stay with Mac? Can he trust Mac to protect himself and Viola? Throughout, I thought Henry’s inner fight with himself was fascinating to read. The way that his past as Sebastian kept coming to the surface – Sebastian, the source of Henry’s guilt, someone that he doesn’t want to acknowledge ever again. This complexity was what drew me in … and I admit, I’m such a sucker for this kind of characterization.

My biggest complaint with this third book is related to Mac as a character. I felt that starting book two, Mac’s role seemed to be demoted into basically a supporting character. Yes, Mac is solid, his family is pretty much normal, which makes him a perfect ‘home’ for Henry. However, this also makes the book pretty much the “Henry show”. Heck, even Viola, who has her own scenes several times is able to shine more brightly than Mac. I wouldn’t be complaining much if the book was written solely from Henry’s perspective, but since it is not, I thought it was pretty much an unbalanced situation, especially since both men were the narrators.

On top of that, Mac’s status as FBI agent was pretty much ineffective. In fact, I thought the whole FBI division, in this book, was pretty laughable – the way that the bad guys seemed to be able to ‘fool’ them in every turn. Let’s just say that I’m not planning to trust my life in the hands of these agents anytime soon.

Still, despite those complaints of mine, I was head over heels in love with this book. The fact that I pretty much read it with my heart tied in knots, and at one particular scene I had to secretly wipe my eyes from tears (I was reading at the office, hush!), I can say that this is one of my favorite books of the year. The whole series, essentially.

"Old Mac-Guinness had a farm," Henry sang dully. "E-IE-I-O."
Mac and Henry are on the run again. They decide to stay at McGuinness family farm, which isn't exactly the best place to hide, but they don't have anywhere else to go. In this installment Henry struggles with a lot of things that's related to his past. And he still runs away, even though he promised he'd stop. But what can you do;
"Bird gotta fly, and fish gotta swim."

There's a good amount of action, angst and humor. I cracked up a lot. At the end, after an awful heartbreak, there's also some enjoyable domestic fluff.

In the second book I was upset at Remy for what he did, but with time my anger subsided, and as I was reading this I wanted to wrap him in a protective blanket all over again. It broke my heart how he ended up literally for nothing.

Those last words at the end are such a tease. I really hope there will be more!

All the world's a stage...

Seriously, one of the best series I've read in a long while. Would give more than 5 stars if I could. Though, I'm glad I chose to wait til all 3 came out so I could do a marathon read (all 3 in 24 hours haha) because I would have lost my shit over those cliffies. So much love for Mac and Henry.

*sings* Mac and Cheese. So tasty together.

I couldn't even choose a favorite of the two. So well done.

Off to order the paperbacks now for my shelf of favorites. Highly recommended. Would love to read one with these guys again one day.

“You believe in destiny, Val?” Henry settled back. “Like big destiny?”

“What do you mean?”

“Like something Shakespearean.” Henry’s fingers twitched against Mac’s. “Like whatever you do, you can’t avoid it. Like it was the Rasnicks’ destiny to ruin my life from before I was even born.”

“I think that’s bullshit.”

“I am fortune’s fool,” Henry said. “Or fortune’s bitch.”

This has been a bit of a long ride, but I have to say that it was worth it. Tempest is the third book in this series, and a wonderful ending to the story of Mac and Cheese…er, I mean, Mack and Henry. :P

Mac and Henry are on the run. Someone at the FBI clearly has it out for Mac, and Henry and his past is all tied up in the reasons why. Viola is along for the ride, Remy has vanished, and Val is trying to keep Mac safe…and out of jail. Was it only weeks ago that Mac didn’t even know Henry existed? Because now his life is thrown upside down and he has no clue where he is going to land. Or if Henry will even be around when the dust settles.

If you haven’t started this series yet, I will say it would probably be best to just start reading at book one and not stop till you reach the end of Tempest. While each book is self contained, I think this is one of those series that practically demands marathon reading. Because the individual mysteries are interesting, but Mac and Henry’s story is enthralling.

This book had me on tenterhooks the whole time. Even when things were calm, I was tense, knowing that most of the calm was an illusion. And when things started to really pick up? Yeah, on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t get enough of these guys and their rather Shakespearean level of bad luck and poor decisions.

And speaking of Shakespeare…I loved all the quotes and how they tied into this story. They’ve been there before in the two previous books, but as Henry falls apart, little by little, they become a lot more prominent. It was such an interesting aspect to him (and his sister) that it was one more thing that set this book apart from a lot of the ‘crime’ mysteries that I have read.

Tempest is able to be funny but also talk about serious issues. It tied you up in knots, but also never left you there so long that you started to get cramps from all the tension. And it was sexy, but in a bit more muted way then the last book. They still certainly have their connection, but larger issues are afoot, and sometimes their ‘relationship’ (whatever the hell it is) takes a back seat to finding out why both of their lives have gone to shit all of a sudden.

It is going to be interesting, when I get around to doing a reread of this series, to go back and see if I can’t spot all the little clues that pop up in books one and two. I pretty sure they are there, but having seen the ending, I would find it fun to go back and see the whole shape of the thing. I don’t want to spoil the whole mystery, but I really really liked it.

And I really liked how all the characters played out in this story. All of them: the good, the bad, the main and the secondary. There is just so much about this book that I love.

So, yeah, read it. And if you have been part of the ‘I’ll just wait till they are all done’ group (like a few of my friends), well now's the time! Have fun reading. I know I did.

Oh Vi, you wormed your way into my heart in this instalment. You were so brave, just plain awesome, and I wanted to give you a big squishy hug. And as for Mac and Cheese, well, a puddle of goo springs to mind. There were SO many touching moments and funny moments in this story, it was just lovely and I was so happy at the ending, although I was sad for Sebby's loss as far as his friend was concerned. Good riddance Flora and you, Janice. Justice has prevailed...for a change, yay!! 4.25 stars from me.

Thank you ladies of the buddy read...even though I had to pull out. Inge, Sofia and Maya, a pleasure as always.

Audiobook review

The third and final instalment in this series finds Mac of all people on the run. Obviously he’s not on the run alone; both Henry and Viola are with him. And they are running to his family home – Henry is meeting the parents….

Anyway, he’s on the run because someone has been setting him up for murder and if he has any hope to clear his name, he and Henry have to work together –and outside the law. Their partnership is tenuous at best, but seeing that it’s only been three weeks since they met and there has been more than a little mistrust, a lot of lies and many runs it definitely fits for them. Anything else wouldn’t have been believable.

The previous books have building towards this finish, and the mastermind behind it all is revealed. Maybe I should have expected their identity, but I didn’t. It’s a dangerous chase of cat and mouse and they don’t know who to trust, knowing that both sides of the law are hunting them. It’s also the book that’s the most serious of the bunch. There’s still banter and shenanigans, but not to the extent we’ve come to expect from the previous books. It was also more emotional.

I loved Viola and Cory’s friendship, the two of them were great together, and sweet –and hilarious. It was nice to see Viola have some happiness again, she deserved it. Not to mention they made a great team! As for Mac and Cheese, well Mac and Henry, their relationship developed nicely. There were a few missteps, but nothing major or out of character and I liked seeing them working through it.

Again Nick J. Russo captured the essence of this book and characters. He made you feel and experience everything with Henry and Mac – even the (bad) theme song to “Mac and Cheese”. I’m not sure that listening to the themes song versus reading was to its advantage, but it sure did add to the feel of the book – to Henry’s personality.

Listening to this series has been a lot of fun and if you haven’t read or listened to this series yet, you might want to change that.

Everything falls into place in this third and final instalment of the Mac 'n Cheese series. It's got everything a finale should have; zippy action, goons waving guns and wonderful banter but what sends it into the 5 star category for me is how all of that craziness is also balanced by some deeply poignant and sad moments.. good ol' ugly cry bits. I love how these two authors can seamlessly move from one to the other, never lingering too long in either- creating wonderfully real and loveable characters along the way.

Thanks Lisa and JA - long may you continue to make magic together :)

Not my favourite in the series but still a good read and a very nice ending of Mac and Henry’s story. I don’t see how Mac will be able to keep his healthy diet though :P

Loved this moment:

Flirty Henry was incorrigible. He was also deflecting again. One day, Mac decided, he would surprise the fuck out of both of them and say yes to whatever crazy suggestion fell out of those candy-stained lips.
“You’re so boring, Mac.”
“Shut up, Cheese.”

Nope, I don't care how many cliffhanger endings there are that I'll never know the answer to, I just can't go any further. Henry is such a fucking unlikable asshole, and I honestly have absolutely no idea what Mac sees in him. Truly, I wanted Mac to dump Henry's ass and move the fuck on.

Please tell me this is not the last one in the series, because if it is, then i'm gonna cry my eyes out because I DID NOT WANT it to end. I need more Mac and Cheese, seriously. I meant Henry, not Cheese.

In any case, great conclusion, everything is solved, the secondary (and main) case is solved and everything was well done. More action, more side characters and interesting scenes.

This series was funny but at the same time heavy and filled with angst, but it was perfectly balanced. This one was a bit heavier than the previous two, not that i minded it, but my favorite was still The Merchant of Death for it was more captivating for me. But overall, I set and read this one like the other two before without stopping and up to 2 a.m. in the morning just to finish it. I needed a series like this and these two authors delievered it. It was great, thank you! Now please write the sequels, i'm begging for sequels... :D

► STORY:

Henry, Mac and Viola are on the run from: 1) FBI 2) People who want to set Mac up and probably want them dead or worse. Where do they go?

“Where are we going?” Henry asked.
Mac drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. “Well, I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but, Henry, I’m taking you home to meet my parents.”
Henry’s mouth dropped open.
Well, fuck.
That was the worst idea he’d heard in a while.

Like the case with the second book, this section will mostly include my opinions on them.

Henry deals with his past in this book in the full - after everything he suffered he is forced to see ghosts of his past. He tries his best to open up and completely trust Mac no matter how hard it is for him. Trust is something he has troubles with and running away is the best thing he does. But this time, he has his sister with him and running away is not a good idea.

“Oh yeah. He’s done playing me.” Mac softened his voice. “Loves his sister. Everything’s for her. Everything. He might be a shit, but he’s a shit with a cause.”

Mac is same as always and unchanging. He wants to help and protect both Viola and Henry, but by taking them to his parents he realizes he puts them and his niece Cory in danger as well. He still cannot figure out why and who wants to set him up but the more and more he finds out, the more dangerous it becomes.

Viola & Cory: Viola, sweet as always, manages to find a friend in Cory - and both of them are smarter than they look and together can beat anything. Cory is adorable as well, her innocence and ideas are amazing and the two of them make a great team.

Remy ran away - and only he can testify that Lenny was setting Mac up... But he takes bigger gamble than that: he tries to find a real evidence in form of tapes.

Mac's parents Ana and Ian were great and discovering those hints about their family made it even more interesting. Frank, an informant, was also interesting addition, but i really wish there was more of the people in the Circle, especially Jo and Stacy, they are amazing.

► OVERALL:

Great sequel, first time not ending in serious cliffhanger, everything is solved and I definitely need more. This series was addicting, captivating and very fast read. Even though it handles heavy themes, it was done right and I'm glad for it.

Audio Review

Things have been building toward a furious storm since the beginning between Mac and Henry, but sorting their personal life must come back seat to the storm swirling around them in the form of murder, set up, on the run, crazy shenanigans, and straight up bad luck. I love this series for its light, but gritty romantic suspense, cunning use of Shakespeare, and colorful, engaging characters.

This is the final book in a trilogy that really must be read in order to get the most out of it.

This is my second time through and I appreciated it so much more in the audio version with Nick J Russo narrating. His Mac and Henry voices were outstanding as were the other characters that back them up. Emotion, timing, and sheer storytelling were top notch. I have come to consider him a narrator that I will seek out books just because he narrates them.

Mac must clear his name even while dodging a determined internal affairs agent who is determined to nail him for anything from possessing cocaine to murdering a witness to him being a dirty cop. All the while he fights the sane need to choke Henry since they are on the run together accompanied by Henry's sister Violet. His options are limited so he takes the pair home with him and worries that Henry will do what Henry does best- run. Mac cares, but just how many times will he be left behind by a man who has more personas than fingers on a hand. But regardless, he must hunt down a weak, drug-addicted man as his only witness and rely on a shady informant for leads even while the FBI internal affairs office is on the hunt for him.

Henry knows he's not being fair to Mac and driving him up the wall, but Henry has a bad feeling about running and hiding on Mac's parent's property that only gets worse when he sees the normality of it all. Being near a real 'normal' family has him nearly in hives and he is starting to crack trying to hold himself together when bad memories and his very identity are at stake. Mac wants his trust and wants Henry to stop running while Henry is terrified to open up and show Mac the real person inside and be rejected, he is terrified that the person after them will find them, and he is guilt-ridden that he can barely take care of his sister. Oh, and this all just makes him lash out in anger. But when lives are at stake can he conquer his fears and stand by Mac?

As finales go, this was a good one. All the elements I enjoy in this series continue to be strong and present- the humor, dialogue, character and relationship development, twisting plot, laid-back quality beside the gritty side.

Up until now, Henry has been able to con his way out of trouble including conning himself when stuff starts to get too real for him, but in this book he is forced to face things and either lose himself and all that is good or face the hard facts and trust for the first time. Mac has promised him that he can do it- start over- and it will be alright. At the same time, Mac isn't sure Henry can be relied on and its hard for him to put it all out there and not know what Henry will do with it. Interesting dynamics to their romance as a result, but it is also interesting because Mac and Henry's physical relations aren't what most people would expect. The big, burly FBI agent likes to be on the receiving end and Henry enjoys that Mac would cede that position to him.

A side story is when Violet, Henry's twin sister with TBI, takes over the narration. For the first time, she gets to be around a normal family. She is confused by Henry's reaction because she loves Mac's parents and Mac's niece. Cory is nine years old, but she's very smart. Violet is mentally about Cory's age. The two don't understand what has the adults around them all worked up and they resent being shunted aside. They get to play a large role in the big scene and I enjoyed what these two enterprising gals came up with.

So, for the second time, I am bummed that I must say good by to a series of books that I anticipated and enjoyed. Those who enjoy m/m romantic suspense with a strong emphasis on the character development along with the other elements should give the Playing the Fool series a look-see.

My thanks to Riptide Publishing for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Voto: 4.5 stelline.

My Review:
Aww, this has been a great series. Mac 'n Cheese...I do love Mac and Henry and they are most definitely one of the most unlikely couples around, but their romance works.

This book had them at Mac's home hiding out from the FBI while they worked together to clear Mac's name since he's being framed for multiple crimes including murder. There are some difficult things that happen in this book. Henry...once again, this guy just needs a good hug and serious long streak of freaking good luck.

This book brought the end to the suspense line for the series, too. And I'll admit...I had no idea who the bad guy was but after all was revealed, it made total sense. I love when an author can twist things around so brilliantly like that.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this series before it came out. The covers and titles were a bit odd, but I love the way that they tie into the stories and the Shakespearean overlay/slant to everything. (Henry grew up with his mother sharing her love for Shakespeare which is the one positive remembrances in his life. He looks to Shakespeare's plays to guide him in his crazy world.) But the series was so good and I absolutely fell in love with these characters. Mac, who's always trying to be good with his diet. Henry who rambles incessantly and cheerfully when he's nervous. They are so good together even though Henry has moments of huge doubt about whether he can be good enough for Mac. It's hard to get past living a life of crime.

There's also a great supporting cast of characters...Mac's parents and niece, Viola and her sweet observations that have an adult slant even with her immature ability to process things. There's Val and the entire crew from Mac's FBI office...I love how they embrace Henry and try to protect both of them. And then Stacy, Remy, and Jo... These two guys are so different, but they both have this incredible support system who try to protect them. I like how they all embraced this relationship by the end. I wasn't sure that was actually going to happen for some of them.

I'm not sure where the story goes from here. The end of the book said, 'for now,' so I'm really hoping that we get to see more of Mac and Cheese in the future.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Belens Audio Book Review

More than anything else, Nick J. Russo's narration of this series has been the icing on a pretty fantastic cake. The narration continues to take center stage and entertain the hell out me.

Mac and Henry are back and the story picks up just where the Merchant of Death left off with Henry convincing Mac to run from OPR and the set-up that can ruin his career. Mac takes Henry and his twin sister, Viola, back to Altona and Mac's family's farm to hide out and regroup.

All of the dangling threads of the series are tied up quite neatly in the final installment. This was just plain FUN to listen to! Smart, funny and full of action, it hit all the good spots.

In the end this is an entertaining story, a terrific series, and extraordinary narration.

Recommended!

do it all over again

This was a good wrap up of the over arcing plot and the MCs romance. Overall a solid series 😁

Favorite Quotes

He really didn’t need Henry, not on top of everything else. Yet he couldn’t imagine being without him, for all his fucking craziness.

Henry was undoubtedly bad for Mac’s career. Bad for Mac’s sanity. Bad for Mac’s heart.

“He’s the Mary Poppins of gay con men,” Val said. “You could do worse.”

And you wouldn’t know what to do with them any more than I do, but I know you’d try your best. And Agent McGuinness, I’ve seen your best. It’s pretty damn good.

“I was saving you for last.”
“Like dessert?”
“Yep. Like dessert.”

“I want all of that ass. And the smart- mouthed sidekick it’s attached to.”
“I am the best sidekick ever.” Henry went up on his toes, eyes falling shut briefly.
“My action figure would sell more than yours.”

Thank you Netgalley via Riptide Publishing for the e-copy of these books!

I have mad author love for both Lisa Henry and J.A Rock. My 1 wish is that someday I get to be in a room when they are plotting their next joint story. Whether they are going for dark, sad and twisted or fun with fisting :) you’re sure to get a dose of greatness. I was honoured to be able to Beta read Another Man’s Treasure for these 2 ladies. A dark and twisted book that left me feeling a little desolate. I was able to pre- review When All The World Sleeps and was so amazed how these 2 thought up some of the shit they did. And my heart hurt. And the ANGST. OMG these 2 do ANGST so well.

And here’s a well known secret. They write fun stuff too! Like make you LOL and LOL!

Mark Cooper VS America

So much fun and hot that book!

So now I get to tell you about Playing the Fool.

Well no I won’t spoil it for anyone because it’s a long time b4 it releases to the public but I will tell you to Treat yourself with book 1 for Christmas. Good tidings and good cheer! A little Mac and a little Henry really will leave you feeling good.

I can’t even imagine how much these 2 ladies must of laughed their asses off writing some of the sentences in these books.

I am totally not Disguspressed ! Like not at all. I am totally and 100% in love with the way these stories flowed.

Henry and Mac take you on such a fun fun ride. Costumes and dresses! Guns and murder!

Candy and donuts and just say no to sugar.

Say no to decaf and nasty ass tea!

Happy birthdays, twisted persona’s, running, someone’s always running.

So here’s my advice. Start this book with a great big mug of coffee (pot! pot of coffee) and a box of doughnuts. Don’t share the doughnuts with anyone. This box should be your’s and your’s alone. Ensure that you have lots of candy or chocolate with you at all times.

If you’re on a diet this book is not for you ;)

I’m totally saddened that this ride has ended for me…. for now

I am so disguspressed with those last 2 words cause I want more more more and soon soon soon and please please please!

But alas while I wait to see if get more Mac and Henry…. I’ll take some Brandon and Alex to keep me company!!!
