Charlotte Lightwood has one season to find a husband or she'll be forced to marry her guardian's loathsome cousin. With no title or dowry, she doesn't have much hope of making a good match. Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Marley, has been the most eligible bachelor on the marriage mart for more years than he cares to count and is very aware of his duty to marry a woman who will add to the wealth and stature of his title. Sebastian makes Charlotte an offer she can't refuse: he will pretend to court her to help her attract more suitors in exchange for her advice about which ladies he should pursue. As they work together, their mutual attraction grows. When they realize they just might be perfect for one another, they must decide whether to bow to the dictates of society or follow their hearts.
Ally has worked as a horse trainer, director of marketing and development, freelance proofreader, and a children's librarian, among other things. None of them were as awesome as writing romance novels (though the librarian gig came closest). She lives in Texas and is convinced her house is shrinking, possibly because she shares it with three kids, five dogs, a cat, a rabbit, and assorted reptiles. Oh, and her husband.
Ally likes to curse in Russian because very few people know what she's saying, and spends most of what would be her spare time letting dogs in and out of the house and shuttling kids around. She has many stories in her head looking for an opportunity to escape onto paper. She writes historical romance set in Regency England and Imperial Russia.
You can find Ally on her website, Facebook, and Twitter, though she makes no claims of using any of them properly.
I am not a huge reader of historical fiction, I pretty much left the genre behind when I graduated from the Mills & Boon training school of Romance... I do however like a good story, so never say never!
That is why you find me in the polite society of 1811, enjoying Charlotte Lightwood's Debutante Season with her. What struck me the most about this book is that although it is 100% Historical fiction, there are a few modern twists thrown in that make it refreshing and easy to immerse yourself in.
I mean how many 'bodice-rippers' have you read where the Heroine gets mauled by a lascivious lout, and makes hardly a protest...Not in Just a Kiss, Charlotte, punches 'Handy Horace' straight in the kisser when he tries to trip the light fantastic across her bum-cheeks...
Sebastian Wilkinson, Earl of Marley, and his gran the Lady Marley, were also wholly Historical with a little modern thrown in for good measure, with their closeness and camaraderie.
A great little novella to start what I expect to be a really enjoyable series!

Familiar trope, with engaging characters, Steam, and a villain. Not quite a Cinderella story but similar. There's of course the wealthy Sebastian being pressured into getting away, the lovely but poor charlotte, the wealthy princess who befriends her, The Dowager Countess grandma and her little dog, the end different brother and villainous sister-in-law and her cousin. Will read the next book, about Princess Anna.
I love it when an awesome piece of writing falls into my lap.
I adored this story. It was simply...
It was full of wit and humor, with those tiny bits of dry sarcasm that only the English gentry can truly convey with accuracy. It was a truly delicious read. I love when writing is flawless and grammatically correct. The twist of words got me excited to read further. I've always been a fan of historical romantic fiction and I love when it comes together so eloquently. And there was a touch of softness that lent to the tender moments between the main protagonists. I think Sebastian and Charlotte were perfectly matched in their personalities. It’s always fun to read when you know the two main characters are perfect for each other and they are the very last to realize. So achingly frustrating. Horace was perfectly repulsive and he aided in most of my mirth. I shuddered every time his name was mentioned and wondered what depravity he was going to display next. I love, loved that last scene! Elizabeth, I just wanted to throttle. There is always the character that inspires you wish them bodily harm. I was appalled at the things she’d say to Charlotte. Urgh! The woman had nerve. Sebastian was sweetly sexy. He had wealth but wasn't self absorbed and arrogant. I loved him from the instant his grandmother hit him with her fan. He exuded charm but wasn't cocky with it and I got that right off from the start. He wasn't even all ‘angry-possessive-alpha-male’, which I fully expected but was pleasantly surprised to find that he wasn't. Lady Marley was simply entertaining and I knew she was up to something!
I got completely wrapped up in this world. Some of it was predictable, old fashioned historical romance. But I did not mind at all. I was rooting for a good ending and it wasn't. It was steamy, sultry and ‘hawt’ but at exactly the perfect time for it. It was great!
All these intense feelings are a testament to great writing. I think the author Ally Broadfield did a splendid job of balancing the historical factor, yet I detected a touch of contemporary influence? These characters could have existed in a modern setting and the story still would have worked.
My one complaint, which really is a futile one, is that it was too short. It was just enough yet by the time I got to the ending, I wanted a couple more chapters. Confusing, yeah? But there it is.
It’s been ages since I've read a really good story in the genre. I took a chance with one just previously and came out very satisfied. And here is that satisfaction once again. Happy as a clam. My foray into a previously dormant, historical romantic wonderment has been attempted and I consider it a resounding success.
My proverbial historic cherry has been re-popped. Now, I want more.

Just a Kiss is a novella in the It’s in His Kiss series and looks like a fantastic start. At just over 100 pages, the two do fall in love pretty quickly but that’s what you expect in a novella but, an important thing for me, I didn’t feel cheated by the length of the story. Broadfield gives her readers a complete, and amazingly sweet, story in just about 100 pages.
Marley is your typical lord – concerned about his title, his position in society and the future of his line. But he also loves his grandmother dearly, is dedicated to his friends, and is willing to help out those he feels aren’t being treated fairly. And that includes Charlotte.
Charlotte is the poor relation and it’s obvious, plus she’s a little out of her depth in London society. But she’s also caring and kind. When she catches Marley’s eye, as well as his grandmother’s, her season is starting to look up. Only the more time she spends with Marley the more attracted she is to him and she’s definitely not his social equal.
The struggle between what Marley should do and what he wants to do is handled deftly. Again, this is a novella so it all happens quickly – we know that a happy ending is in their future but Broadfield makes it fun getting there. She also introduces us Marley’s friend Lord Ashdown and Princes Tarasova, a possible bride for him and quick friend to Charlotte. Both are very appealing and hopefully will play a starring role in the next installment in the series.
Just a Kiss is the perfect choice for readers who are looking for a quick read on a beautiful spring day. It may go fast but you’ll devour every page and finish with a little happy sigh.

This is a fun little ditty. Charlotte is being pressured into marrying an odious wart hog who is only wanting an annuity annually in return to fix up his small estate. She has been promised by her half brother that she will get at least one season but it is his wife Elizabeth who is trying to force the marriage to her cousin.
The Earl of Marley otherwise known as Sebastian Wilkinson has put off marrying himself for far too long and at the request of his frail grandmother has agreed that he will settle down this season. It is at a ball that he first spots Charlotte and after hearing some gossip about the girl he sees an opportunity present itself. The proposal he strikes up with the h is not an original one but I still enjoyed the fast pace that the story took on. The H/h were a good match for one another and I loved the fact that there were no hidden emotions. Charlotte simply said how she felt and didn't try to hide it. Now because of the length of the book I think the author had to write it in this manner.
I did deduct a star for that because although I enjoyed it being a fast read I would have liked to see them in a longer story. The title I gave my review was actually a word created by the author for Sebastian to use to describe their lovemaking. There Is one sex scene but it is brief and not that descriptive and only after Charlotte has agreed to be Sebastian's wife. This is my first read from the author and I'm curious to see what she can do with a full length novel.
Light and sweet, Just a Kiss was an enjoyable historical romance novella. I liked this quick read. It was a sweet novella.
Sebastian and Charlotte were both great. Charlotte was determined not to let her sister-in-law take control of her life and was strong enough to follow through. Sebastian was sweet, though a bit oblivious to what was right in front of him. But, still adorable. I liked both characters.
The romance was good. It took a while to actually progress, though, so that slowed down the book for me and affected my enjoyment of it. But, I still thought they were great together and that the romance was sweet.
The plot was well paced and I was kept mostly interested the entire way through. I did skim in some parts. I enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely.
Just a Kiss was a sweet historical romance novella. It was a light, enjoyable read. Romance lovers, this is a novella you might want to check out.

Oh, I'm just so excited! After I read this book, my very first book from Ms. Ally Broadfield, I directly went to her website and searched up her booklist. Sadly she only had this book which I believe now is her debut book -Hooray!!!- But I checked up her upcoming books and she has more works coming!!! An anthology with other authors and.......A sequel to Just A Kiss!!!! Squeals~!!! Sadly I have to wait till 2015!!! Why~? :'(
But I'm hoping she has more ideas for this series because I'm concocting my own ideas for fellow secondary characters and already have my couples lined up from the beginning! I know right, I'm crazy like that.
~~~~~~~
Sebastian, Lord Marley is just the most adorable hero out there. He's the most sought out bachelor in the ton and his cute grandmother has hopes for him to wed before she gets too old to live. And because he loves her dearly, he complies. But what happens when he finds his interests lies in the form of a penniless girl being rudely ridiculed by more fortunate girls at a ball? Help her of course!
Charlotte Lightwood is orphaned and is going to be forced to marry her wretched sister-in-law's clammy horrid of a cousin if she doesn't find a suitable suitor to marry, pronto! Having no title or dowry to her name that's going to be tough but as luck will have it a certain Lord has a proposition for her in the form of help him secure a suitable wife and he'll help her find a suitable husband. But what happens when she finds that he may be the one but wants her help to secure her friend's hand? Well, despite having feelings for him, she'll let him help her find a suitor, anyone is better than that horrid of a cousin, a rake or a blue-collar.
Both these characters hit it off from the start and I highly enjoyed their conversations. They didn't hold back and spoke plainly to each other. They have back to back jeers that were very fun to follow and show so much of their personality and character outside of their social status. They're both easy going, kind loving characters and always think of others. They're both also strong independently and dislike the rules of the ton on how one should act and stuff. They find it so, unbelievable.
The storyline moved smoothly with the setting and plans they had in place to find suitable spouses for each other. The only thing that I had a problem with was the word choices chosen. Some of them were too modern for me to be used for the time period. There were very little of them that it didn't bother me so much or took me out of the story but there were enough for me to still remember them and pause.
The secondary characters were fabulous! I super loved them. One is Charlotte's niece Amelia. Amelia is patiently waiting for her own season after Charlotte weds first since her mother doesn't want both her daughter and sister-in-law to come out at the same time and for Charlotte to ruin Amelia's image. But Amelia couldn't care less because she lives her aunt and is getting tired of her mother’s antics. I super want Amelia to get her own story, which I think may happen soon but not at this moment. She was a crucial part in advising Charlotte to do as she pleased and to defy her mother, Charlotte's sister-in-law, and we see Amelia's change in character from quiet docile to debugging her mother’s ideas as the story progressed. Yay!
Anna was also a crucial part of the story because she is the girl Sebastian is hoping to win and is a good friend of Charlotte. Anna is just so caring and sweet, she doesn't care if suitors line up for her hand in England, she just wants to go home to Russia and marry a fellow mate there. Plus she helped pushed Charlotte to follow her heart and stop following the way the ton wanted things to be done in the form of marriages. And Lord Ashdown, he's just someone I'm looking forward to seeing more of. He has a humorous side to his character and we know he's caring and watchful of Charlotte even without being told to by Sebastian. Is there something more there than meets the eye? I don't know but I had a feeling..... But just from that it makes him all the more mysterious and interesting which got me thinking and hoping to hook him up with ones of these two ladies: Amelia or Anna? I'm not sure who yet but I'm definitely excited for the second book which is Anna's story~!!!
So as you can tell, I super enjoyed my reading of this short story. Yes it's a short story but for me it was a great short story because it didn't feel at all short for me. In under 130 pages it was a great romance that got me smiling like literally throughout the whole book. It made me swoon and giddy, smiling like a fool, and man the sexual attraction got me squirmy, in a good way. *wink wink*
So I really really loved it. Ally did a great job of expressing how each character were feeling and got me to also feel those emotions as they did at the same time of their circumstances. Especially of the moments when you know they're angry but holding it back for propriety sakes and when they're doing something cute and adorable and you can't help but grin.
It was very sweet and both characters were very much loved and adored by me from the very beginning.
So, pick up this book for a fun flirty short read that'll make you smile and wishing to have more from these lovely characters!
Just a Kiss by Ally Broadfield is a spectacular historical romance novella that is perfectly written and features two beguiling characters whose chemistry sky-rockets off the pages. This story was breathtaking!
Can I just say how much I loved this novella? Seriously. I don't think I've ever rated a novella five stars before, but I'd be kidding myself if I didn't give Just a Kiss that perfect rating--it thoroughly deserves it! The amount of wit, humor and sass Ally Broadfield manages to pack into this 80 pages of romance is incredible.
Though I'd be honest and admit I wished this story was longer--simply because I was in love the the characters and their story and wasn't ready for it to end--I feel like Broadfield did a tremendous job making this story feel real, authentic and yet not rushed. The setting of this story is lush, vivid and perfectly depicts life of those in high society during 19th Century London. Glorious balls and debutantes mingle and help whisk you into a addictive story.
Told in dual POV, Just a Kiss follows Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Marley and a charismatic young man born into high society and Charlotte Lightwood, a simple but stubborn and striking young woman whose lives are about to intertwine. With his grandmothers health deteriorating, Sebastian needs to find a bride and he's hoping to find one this season. Ideally she'll be someone of sophistication and high class who will compliment his status. Charlotte, who has one season to find a husband or who must otherwise marry her sister-in-law's horrid brother in law unexpectedly catches Sebastian's eye and with her small stature but sharp tongue and opinions, he knows that though she appeals to him, he can't have her. And yet he can't get her off his mind, so proposes a bargain to her....he'll help find someone to court her if she helps him find a suitable bride.
The story moves in an obviously expected direction with the two slowly realizing over time that the person they truly want is the other, but I was in no was daunted by how Ally Broadfield wrote their story. The two main characters in Just a Kiss took my breath away! Both as individuals and together. Charlotte is smart, witty and quick thinking. She stands up for herself and has her own opinions and though she is a 19th century lady she is in no way unable to handle herself! Sebastian on the other hand is a real charmer and is charismatic, but he wasn't overly cocky and I appreciated that.
As soon as Charlotte and Sebastian meet these two ooze chemistry, and the witty banter shared between them was exciting to read. They were perfectly matched in their personalities and complimented each other very well. Due to the fact this is a novella, Ally Broadfield builds their relationship fast, but given the time and setting, this didn't seem like it was forced. Charlotte and Sebastian were tantalizing to read about together and the sensuality to their relationship was enjoyable in this historical romance.
A sharp and witty historical romance, Just a Kiss is a perfectly paced and sensual historic read! Short, but oh so sweet, Just a Kiss is perfect for YA/NA readers looking for a historical romance that isn't over the top. I'm very much looking to see what Ally Broadfield does next!
Charlotte Lightfoot is in a real predicament. She has no dowry and no title. She is forced to live with her married brother and his family – and his wife doesn’t want her there, but cannot go against her husband and refuse his sister a home. Her eldest niece Amelia is very happy that her Aunt Charlotte lives with them. Elizabeth, her sister-in-law decides to try to get Charlotte out of the house through marriage – and is foisting her unmarried cousin, Horace, on her at ever opportunity. Horace revolts Charlotte. Not only that, but whenever he visits, her sister-in-law intentionally leaves the room, leaving Charlotte vulnerable to be pawed and compromised by the man, which would leave her no choice but to marry him. Charlotte tries her best to dodge the situation without causing her brother any stress.
Unable to have Horace compromise Charlotte, the sister in law ramps it up a notch and convinces her husband, that Charlotte’s unmarried state will make it difficult Amelia to secure a match the coming season. She convinces her husband to issue the following ultimatum to Charlotte. If Charlotte doesn’t receive an offer during this season, she will marry Horace.
Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Mabry is the most eligible bachelor on the marriage mart. He has promised his grandmother- who wants to see her grandchildren before she dies - that this season he will finally try and secure a bride and meet his obligation of his title. He thinks she is dying. He wants her to meet his bride and maybe see his heir before she leaves this world.
At her first ball of the season, Charlotte has the uncanny good fortune to be befriended by the guest of honor, the exotic Princess Tarasova, who immediately recognizes what Charlotte’s family is doing to her, and decides to help her. They become fast friends.
Sebastian, who had initially come to the ball to prospect the potential of courting the beautiful Princess, now sees both women and is stirred for entirely different reasons by both of them. But it is Charlotte that he befriends. Sebastian decides to ask Charlotte to help advise him about what ladies to court. In exchange, pretends to court her – which confounds her sister-in-law, and drives her cousin Horace, who both thought that an engagement to Charlotte was in the bag.
The alliance between Charlotte and Sebastian brings about plot twists and exciting surprises that kept me reading until I finished the book. I loved it. The book was enchanting and fun. Great character development in a short novella. I highly recommend this book. Four Stars **** PLUS!
This was an enjoyable and sweet historical. Being that it's a novella, it's just over a hundred pages only. I will admit the first 20% of the book was good, but slow. I found my dislike for the sister-in-law and horrid Horace straight off the bat. I loved Charlotte, even though she didn't have much she was determined not to marry Horace despite her sister-in-law’s insistence. She won even more marks from me when she punched him in the eye for pinching her bum. Then going over her sister-in-law’s head to her brother.
Upon her debut on the London season at her first ball, Charlotte overhears some other girls talking about her. She won't give them the satisfaction of knowing their words hurt. Sebastian who is the most eligible bachelor of the ton also overheard the remarks and felt a protective urge on her behalf. He decided he was gonna ask her to dance and not them, then he propositioned her. If it looks like he is courting her that will increase interest and marriage prospects for her. She can feed him info on her newly acquired friend Princess Tarasova in return that way he can marry by the end of the season as well.
Ohhhhh Sebastian you were swoon worthy. Him and Charlotte fit together with perfectly matched personalities. I loved the banter and wit between them. Though they both had a hard time admitting to their feelings, all it took was a kiss to open the flood gates. The romance was there through out the book. I even laughed in a few spots, cheered in a few, swooned in some then had my cheesy happy smile that I get when I am in my happy place.
Ally Broadfield brought us an entertaining and captivating novella. It's packed with a cast of secondary characters that range between the delightful to the “makes me want to tell them off“. I think Broadfield teased us with this novella to wet our palettes. I am now demanding stories for Ana (Princess Tarasova) and Amelia (Charlotte’s niece). I have a feeling Ashdown will be making a debut in one as well. I kinda developed a soft spot and want to see him fall in love. I adored this read and Broadfield has a new fan who is awaiting the next in the series so hurry up please.
Just a Kiss is a short, cute, historical romance that will appeal to those how like a "Cinderella" plot line. Charlotte Lightwood has been given one season to find a husband; otherwise she will have to marry her sister-in-law’s lecherous cousin. At her first ball, Charlotte finds herself introduced to Sebastian, the Earl of Marley, and considered to be the catch of the season. Sebastian’s grandmother’s heath has been declining and he’s promised her that he will look for a bride this season, so he strikes a bargain with Charlotte. He will pay court to her so that she will attract suitors. In return, Charlotte will pass along any helpful gossip she has about her friend, a Russian princes whom Sebastian plans on proposing to. Neither think they are a good match. Charlotte is a poor relation, and Sebastian is expected to marry someone whose social status is equal to his own. Alas, things do not unfold according to plan.
This was a cute little novella. I liked the hero and heroine; they were both nice characters (no rakes here!), and while their bargain certainly requires a certain suspension of belief, it was used effectively to bring about a believable relationship between Charlotte and Sebastian. For such a short book, I bought Charlotte and Sebastian's happily ever after.
What I could not believe was Charlotte’s treatment by her family. Her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, was a horrible guardian. She willingly created situations for Charlotte to be accosted by her cousin. Thankfully, Charlotte was strong willed enough to violently deflect the unwanted advances; however, I’m not sure that other ladies would have behaved that way during this time. Charlotte punches the cousin in the nose after he pinches her rear end, but I doubt that other well-bred ladies would have done the same thing, which kind of makes the situation terrifying in and of itself.
Overall, this little book was a lot of fun and just what I needed to get out of my reading slump today. If you’re looking for a mostly light read, this one would be a great choice.
Do you want to read a fast paced love story that has hilarious characters? How about a book with a heroine that punches out a suitor not one time but twice? Then this novella is for you.
Charlotte Lightfoot lives in society's background. She has two joys of her life, her clan of nephews and a niece and arranging flowers. She can't just rearrange her own flowers, she feels compelled to do it at balls. Charlotte is unloved and unwanted by her super mean and evil sister-in-law, Elizabeth. She is pushing Charlotte to marry her creepy and handsy Cousin Horace. If she does not get a offer of marriage by the end of the Season, she must marry him. What's a girl to do?
Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Marley, is a very rich and deeply cares for his grandmother, Dowager Countess of Marley, who raised him after his parents death. She is getting old and sick and wants him to marry this Season. Sebastian will marry for her and his bride must be rich and have great noble bloodlines. What's a rich earl to do to weed out unfavorable matches?
Sebastian and Charlotte team up to help one another. He will show society that she is desirable by showing his regard for her. Charlotte will find out all the gossip about Princess Anna and tell the princess all about him. What they don't expect is to have a meddling grandmother, a troublemaking dog, flowers galore and a house party to make them fall in love.
This is the first book of Ms. Broadfield that I have read and I am now her newest fan. She writes with humor and comes up with ridiculous situations. She even wrote a very sweet princess that I actually wanted to be friends with. I love how his grandmother is always slapping Sebastian upside his head! Oscar, her dog, goes everywhere with grandma (balls, carriages etc.) and causes havoc. The novella is longer than most and I give it a score of 4 fingers up and 9 toes.
Just a Kiss is the debut of this author and I enjoyed this light and sweet read. This is historical romance is thrown with a few twists that made this book stand out to me. Our heroine Charlotte is a sassy woman who won’t let the decision that has been forced on to her by her guardian as her life sentence . Charlotte got one season to find a husband or she be forced to marry her guardian’s loathsome cousin. But she got a big problem ,she has no money or title and it something that is important for English gentry and hampering her efforts. Thrown in pesky Hester the cousin in question who determined to have her now and Charlotte got to find a solution now
So enter Sebastian, who got the opposite problem , his mother wants him to marry and feel sorry for the beautiful Charlotte. So he decides to help her by pretending to be a suitor of her. We all know what is going to happen. It is something we usually that we read in contemporary books so I love the idea being played out in a historical novel . The hero and heroine are usually clueless and try to fight until the near the end of the book, where there is a lightbulb moment . In this one, it takes the climax of this book to do and it’s not a particular favourable scene of mine in the book due to what happens. Overall, it is a witty and humorous take on contemporary trope, and is a fun read. The protagonists in this book may be determined for the best outcome for Charlotte being that she marries someone else but you can’t help love how everyone who love them nudge them in the right direction. If you are looking for a historical romance with contemporary flair and a hero that is a good guy all around generally . I would recommend this book as it something different from other books out there.
Just a Kiss by Ally Broadfield was a quick read and was a nice little story. If you like historical romance and want to read something that will have you rooting for the heroine, definitely check this one out.
Charlotte Lightwood has been living with her half-brother and sister-in-law for a while now and she knows her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, isn’t happy about having her still around. Part of Elizabeth’s plan to get her out of her household it to marry Charlotte off to her cousin, Horace. Unfortunately for Elizabeth, Charlotte’s brother has promised her a season and won’t force the betrothal until she has been presented to society.
Charlotte clearly stands out when she attends her first ball and this draws the attention of Sebastian Wilkinson, The Earl of Marley. He happens to be looking for someone to marry in order to make his grandmother happy. In their introduction, Sebastian decides to offer up a trade with Charlotte. He offers to pay attention to her in order to generate interest from other suitors in return for her assistance in providing information about Princess Tarasova, who happens to befriend Charlotte. Charlotte agrees and things get interesting.
I struggled with some parts of the story – mostly how easy it was for these two characters to find time alone without any challenges considering who they were and the time. Additionally, I felt like the story around Princess Tarasova was cut off – we got a little bit of a glimpse but it didn’t feel like there was enough wrap up with her.
Overall this was a fun and quick read. The secondary characters were interesting and because this happens to be listed as a series I am hoping we will get more of them. I enjoyed Charlotte and Sebastian and their banter was great. If you enjoy a lighthearted romance you might want to check this one out.
Just A Kiss by Ally Broadfield is the first novella in the new series, It's In His Kiss. The story centers aroud Charlotte Lightwood. She has one season to find a husband, or she'll be forced to marry the cousin of her guardian. And he's a really loathsome choice. Think Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice but more skeevy. So she embarks on her journey to find a husband, but she's at a sheer disadvantage. She's virtually penniless with not much to recommend her. Though she is a beauty. She catches the eye of Sebastian, the Earl of Marley. He, too, has to find someone to marry this season. Though he doesn't plan to marry Charlotte. He knows he has to marry someone who would make a great wife for an Earl.
Charlotte invokes Sebastian's sympathy when he overhears her being laughed at among her peers. So he makes it his mission to find a suitable husband for Charlotte. And the more time they spend together, the more he finds Charlotte irresistible.
At around 100 pages, this was an enjoyable novella. Broadfield managed to lure you in hook, line, and sinker. Charlotte and Sebastian have great chemistry together. I loved their banter and their flirting. My only complaint is that it was over rather quickly. Just when the story climaxed, it was brought to an abrupt halt.Without giving away any spoilers, I felt like the story could have used about 20 more pages to make the story perfect. I wanted to know more about the fates of the characters. This is the first in a series, so there may be more to this story-line in the next book. Only time will tell. Fun read with cute characters. Really enjoyed this. Just a Kiss is a very cute story. The premise is one of my favorites – clever young woman with no dowry has to find a match before being stuck for the rest of her life with an odious acquaintance. In this case, Charlotte is being pressured to marry the cousin of her sister-in-law. Both the sister-in-law and the cousin are horrible, selfish people, so it’s a good thing that Charlotte has a backbone and stands up to them. They keep plotting to compromise her so that she will have to marry Horace (with a name like that, you know he’s going to be an awful toad), but fortunately, Sebastian, Earl of Marley, steps in to save the day.
Sebastian is under some pressure to find a suitable bride. His grandmother raised him, and now she is frail and often falls ill. She wants nothing more than to see him wed, and to see her great-grandchildren. After her latest bout of illness, Sebastian makes up his mind – he will finally marry and make his grandmother happy. Now, he just has to find a woman who doesn’t drive him nuts with her simpering!
Charlotte has been promised a season by her much older half-brother and guardian, and she intends to make full use of her opportunity. Elizabeth, her SIL doesn’t even want to sponsor her for the season, and instead accepts Horace’s proposal on her behalf. Richard puts down his foot though, and agrees that Charlotte will have her season, but if she can’t land a suitable match, she will have to marry Horace. Yuck! The pressure is on!
Charlotte needs to find a husband or else she doesn't have choice than to marry the awful cousin of her dreadful sister-in-law. But since her parents dies and she went to live with her older half brother, she lives with his generosity, she doesn't have any prospects, no dowry, which makes her chance for a good match really dimmed.
Until she goes to a ball and meet Sebastian, the most eligible bachelor in the ton. He his handsome and considerate, and she feels he sparks when she first met him...
What she didn't expect was for he to propose a deal,he will pretend to be interested in her and court her, and she will give him information in the lady he settled his eyes on, a princess that matches him in position and allure.
As time goes by, they can't deny the chemistry they had, but will he be willing to ignore her social condition and can she hope to marry for love?
****
Well, I quite enjoyed this story but in some ways I did noticed the constrictions of it being a novella. Some parts where too fast (like her friendship with the princess, he exchanged like 3 lines with her, and she was now one of her closest friends?)...still, it was quite a fun a romantic read.
Charlotte has to find a husband in one season or she will be forced to marry a horrible man. She doesn't have a lot of money and must rely on her half brother and his wife for all she has. is wife just wants her out at any cost. Sebastian is an earl and he has his eye on another lady. He knows he has to marry. He proposes a deal he will help her attract different gentlemen's eye if she will help him win the lady he wants. It works well until Sebastian can't seem to find a decent gentleman for Charlotte. He has to look deep inside to see why he doesn't want her to marry another. They both want each other but being from different ranks they shouldn't be together.
This is a very delightful historical romance. It is a quick read but you quickly fall for not only Sebastian but Charlotte as well. He is a charming man who doesn't want to settle down really but will because he should. Charlotte is so much in one package of a woman. She loves flowers, working with her hands, can be sexy, friendly, smart and so much more. I love how she interacts with Sebastian and others. She hates the man she is being forced to marry and does everything she can to get out of it. They both tip toe around their true feelings for a while but Charlotte finally decides she needs some happiness. This historical romance is great because it has a strong female character as well as a gentleman that captures your eye and heart.
This was a quick read that I really enjoyed. From the first page I was curious about the characters. Charlotte the heroine was instantly a favorite. She was a strong young woman of her era, not just a wallflower or a quiet mouse, she tended to do and speak her mind. But she did it all with style and the occasional spark of humor.
The hero of the story is Sebastian. Just the name does it for me. I can easily picture a noble gentlemen who loves and dotes on his grandmother, but at the same time as a reputation as a ladies man. Again, this character had a sense of humor and a quirky habit of making up words to describe feelings or instances that weren’t easily described.
My favorite secondary character was Sebastian’s grandmother. I think she was a woman ahead of her time, kind of like Charlotte.
The fun part about this short little story was that Sebastian and Charlotte started out as friends who were both in the same predicament. They each had a season to find a spouse. Charlotte’s story was more of a hard luck case, and Sebastian seemed to accept his fate in finding a wife to please his grandmother. In their attempt to help each other they grow close, share several fun meetings with engaging dialogue and easily pictured settings, and a romance is sparked.
I won’t give away to much of this well written story. My suggestion is to grab a copy yourself and get lost between the pages. You won’t regret it.
I received an ARC for this book in place of an honest review.
After Charlotte Lightwood's parents died she was put in her brother's household and she never felt welcome. She's been promised one season and she has to find someone that will marry her. It's going to be hard because she doesn't have a dowry or any land. Her sister-in-law has promised her cousin that he can marry her.
The Earl of Marley, Sebastian Wilkinson has been on the marriage mart for years. He hasn't found the woman he wants. Everyone of them are the same. He promised his grandmother that he will pick a bride this year so he can produce the grandchildren that she wants. When Sebastian hears what everyone is saying about Charlotte and he see's her, he comes up with a plan that will help them both out.
This was a great story and I loved the characters. Sometimes you have to make a hard decision to make you happy and no one else. I can't wait for the next book to come out. The author will have a hard job to make the next story better than this one. I don't usually read historical's but I had to once I read what it was about.
Had there been just a bit more danger, illicit lust, overwhelming anger...or maybe if the horrible Horace had been more horrid...then this book would get more stars. As it was, the tension that usually builds in a romance of this type NEVER appeared. The hero tends mildly to his grandmother, who obviously adores him. To me, there was never any question that he could bring home any remotely acceptable female and she would be delighted. As a villainess, Elizabeth disappoints. She is, at worst, unpleasant. Charlotte is likewise undeveloped. Nonetheless, I will doubtlessly re-read the book. It has some lovely moments - the dog, Oscar - provides comic relief of a sort. The Princess Anna character, while (again) under-developed, is darling. I would expect a spin-off book in which she finds love. And one for Ashland. Hopefully there, all the characters can grow in depth, and overcome more intense dangers. All that aside, this book is good for an escape for a person who could handle very limited sex in a book (a single scene, although very explicit, is very "standard sex").
Just a Kiss by author Ally Broadfield was such a delight to read! I haven't been a fan of historical romances due to my feminist views, but this book may have converted me into liking historical romances.
Charlotte Lightwood needs to find a fast or else she would be force to marry her guardian's despicable cousin. When Sebastian Wilkinson offers to pretend to court her in exchange for her help in finding him a suitable female to marry she would be a fool to refuse him. But when sparks fly between them, will they go for what their heart desires or submit to the belief of society?
Great characters and awesome plot. This was the first book from author Ally Broadfield which I have been able to read and it certainly wouldn't be the last.
Charlotte finds herself in an unfoturnate situation. When her father died she was left in the care of her brother and sister-in-law who don't seem to particularly care to have her around. Her sister-in-laws solution is to force her hand and make her marry a very gross and horrid man. Charlotte would do just about anything to stop this from happening, so when Sebastian takes her under his wing (so to speak) and offers to help her find other suitors, she hopes that he can help.
Or course, this being a romance novel things work out a little differently than any of our characters suspect. Sebastian's mother has a the right of it throughout the whole story, but no one around her seems to notice. This was a sweet romance where the hero steps in to save the day at the last moment - the perfect moment. There is a bit of wit and humor to help top it all off as well.
Muahaha! I love the "Let's pretend to be courting so that people will think things" that ends up leading to some mixed emotions. I remember when I started the story, I was like, "Must see where this goes." And I liked where it went.
Charlotte and Sebastian think they're just helping each other out, but it becomes so much more. It's almost like there needs to be a disclaimer when people do this: Never kiss. Because the second you do, well, the floodgates open and you're gonna go all in. Just... always... always with the kiss. I mean, if it were me in Charlotte's position... yeah... the kissing would have done me in too.
Just a Kiss is an adorable little historical novella. It keeps your interest and you can't stop feeling swoony. The romance is sweet and the characters make you cheer for them. I would definitely be interested in seeing what else Ally Broadfield has to offer in the world of romance.
Charlotte has only one season to find a husband or she will be forced to marry her sister-in-law's cousin, while Sebastian needs to marry to please his ailing grandmother. They decide to work together, each helping the other find a spouse. Of course that plan backfires and they end up betrothed to each other.
This is a novella, with all the action of a full length novel. To achieve that Ally Broadfield had to speed up a lot of the relationship building. The story begins slowly as we're introduced to all the players, and then picks up very quickly once you hit the halfway mark. In spite of the speed of the friendship and romance, Charlotte and Sebastian are very likable characters and their attraction is believable. This novella was full of humor and heart - and a likable dragon of a grandmother.
Recommended for readers who need a quick dose of romance.
Charlotte Lightfoot is living in her brothers household and her sister in law is doing all she can to get her married and out of the house. Charlotte is doing all she can to avoid marrying her sister in laws cousin Horace. In fact she punches him out twice! Her brother has promised her one season and Charlotte needs to make the most of it.
Sebastian, the Earl of Marley, has promised his grandmother to find a wife this season. He decided he will marry a Russian Princess Anna. The problem is he needs to find more about her to woo her.
He meets Charlotte and strikes a deal with her to help her find a husband and she in turn will provide inside information on Princess Anna whom she has started to become friends with.
Through the book there humor and I was able to relate to the characters and I couldn't put the book down. I am a sucker for a great historical romance and this one fit the bill!
I was provided a copy of this book for my honest, open review.
I didn’t know what to expect when starting Ms. Broadfield’s Just a Kiss, but I was pleasantly surprised as I got underway. I quickly lost track of time as the world of Catherine and Sebastian entranced me.
Catherine, a Cinderella character, lives under the control of her “evil” sister-in-law who will do anything to marry her off and get her out of the house. Our “prince” is the Earl of Marley, given the task to find a bride before his elderly grandmother’s demise. The cast of character’s interact within the confines of London’s society balls.
What really struck me about this book is the characters all had a positive side. Other than Catherine’s sister-in-law and unwanted suitor, most of the characters are very likeable. Even the “other woman” has a great deal of positive traits and does not play the snarky antagonist to our protagonist as is prevalent in many books today.
Overall, this novella is a fun read that will keep you intrigued until the very end!
Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Marley, promises his grandmother that he'll find a wife and give her great-grand children. Charlotte Lightwood has one season to find a husband. She has to escape her sister-in-law's plotting. She won't be forced to marry Elizabeth's odious cousin even if she ends up destitute. What happens next will keep you reading. I loved these characters. You can feel the sexual tension when these two are together. Their romance is both tender and passionate. The secondary characters add so much to the story. I hope to see more of them in the future. I really want to know what happens to Anna, Princess Tarasova as well as Lord Ashdown. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last. Her writing style is so witty and the story is skillfully crafted. Just a Kiss gave me the HEA that I wanted. A perfect romantic pick-me-up!
Charlotte Lightwood has one season to find a husband or she'll be forced to marry her sister-n-law's horrid cousin...and boy is he horrid! After Charlotte's parents died she was forced to move in with her brother and his wife...a wife who despises her. When she comes of age, she is given one season to find a husband or be forced into a marriage with Horace. She meets Sebastian at a ball and they come to an agreement. He will help her find a husband by showing her "favor" at different balls and gatherings and she will help him by giving him information about Princess Tarasova who she has become friends with. What happens for the next 100 pages is a wonderful story of two people who form a friendship by helping each other but eventually fall in love. This is the prequel, therefore short novella, to a series that I know I'm going to enjoy reading.
This is the first I have read from Ally Broadfield. I just love it. I can't wait to read more books from her. Sebastian came with his Grandmother for the Season to find a bride. His Grandmother's wishes for Sebastian to be married very soon. From the moment, Sebastian saw Charlotte, he was captivated. Charlotte is a poor relation that has been given this one and only Season to find a husband. Or she would have to marry her half brother's wife's cousin. Wow. That is a mouthfull. Sebastian can't help to be drawled to Charlotte. And the more time he spends with Charlotte, the more he desired her not only in her looks, but by her personality. I would highly recommendation this sweet and zesty book. I received a compliment copy from Net Galley for an honest review.
