Kathy Reichs is a forensic anthropologist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State of North Carolina, and for the Laboratoire des Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale for the province of Quebec. She is one of only fifty forensic anthropologists certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology and is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. A professor of anthropology at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Dr. Reichs is a native of Chicago, where she received her Ph.D. at Northwestern. She now divides her time between Charlotte and Montreal and is a frequent expert witness in criminal trials.
Please tell me there's another book after this, the ending literally left me hanging. Do they get their flares back? What's up with the pale blue flaming eyes? God, I need answers! I need more Virals awesomeness!
On a side note, I was happy to see the Tory/ Ben/ Chance thing resolved, though her decision was pretty expected.
I also guessed that the third member of the Trinity was Ella from the start, which was a bit of a bummer at that point, since Tory hadn't figured it out yet, but I'm just being nitpicky here
Overall, if this really was the ending, it's still a damn awesome book, full of its usual action, but with a touch more romance than the previous ones. A stunning end to an excellent series.
I'll be pretty sad to never have to wait for another book again though. I'll miss Tory's wit, Hi's humor, Shelton's adorable dorkiness and Ben's mysteriousness. I'll miss them all.
Long live the Virals!!
Update: Apparently there'll be a new Virals novella titled SPIKE that's going to release in winter. Fingers crossed that all my questions will be answered by then!

This was such a good ending to the series. I'm honestly so glad that these crazy teenagers got found out, but even happier that they managed to once again get away with it. So glad Chance isn't Tory's endgame. And love that Tory finally accepted Whitney in her life.
I also think it's really cool that Kathy Reichs left it so open ended so she can continue this at any time.
Such a fun, action packed series. I'm glad I picked it back up to finish after all these years.
OMG, the cliff hanger at the end in Terminal broke my heart! I love the series by heart (I've read a lot of books, but this is my all time favorite - and will be FOREVER) and I want more! I finished last night, and just buried my face in a pillow, hoping to see another book (I know Terminal is the finale, but, #Hopes&Dreams) coming after Terminal. PLEASE! (Oh, and I hate the long waits for the books. I had to wait an entire year for Terminal. I read Exposure the day it came out.) And, I'm going to repeat the question: What's up with the "pale blue" color, that gleams in Tory's eyes? Oh, the agony of not knowing! I need answers.. (I mean, I know what it is, but why is it there? How?) Honestly, I've been upset over a LOT of series that have to end, but this is unbearable. I love the Virals series so much. I just can't let the characters go.. #ViralsForever.
As the Virals series comes to an end, Reichs-squared pack all the power of the previous novels into this final instalment. At the end of the previous novel, the Virals learned that they were not the only infected pack in town. This new group, Trinity, has ties to a former classmate of Tory Brennan's, Chance Claybourne, whose earlier goal was to discover the secret behind the Virals and out them. It's Trinity versus Virals, with a single pack set to survive, at least until their super-virus cripples their everyday lives. Can Tory and the Virals bring a happy ending to this story, or will Trinity take over Morris Island, wiping the cast of protagonists off the map? Reichs-squared end things on a very interesting note, sure to entertain followers of the series.
Having navigated through the entire series, I have been trying not to compare it to James Patterson's Maximum Ride collection. Both series are unique, though have strong leading females, who guide their respective collection through thick and thin. While the novels are nowhere nearly as exciting as the Temperance Brennan books, they prove entertaining and thought provoking, with just enough spice to keep the story from getting too lame. I am sad to see the series end, though it has served a decent purpose and kept things interesting for a number of years.
Kudos, Mr. and Dr. Reichs for this wonderful collection. Young and full-fledged adults alike should appreciate all the effort that's been put in.
OMG OMG OMGGGGGGG *Goes into fangirling mode* THE NEXT BOOK IS GONNA COME OUTTTTT. Although we have to wait until next year....
Predictions:
-Tory and Ben get together (How do you not get together after you've kissed?) -Chance joins the Virals but the boys are rather hostile towards him -They find something shocking about the virus
Things that I want to happen: -For some reason I think it'll be really cool is Aunt Tempe played some part in the book, because I found the novella's way better with her in them -And...of course I want Tory and Ben to get together -Tory humiliates the Tripod in found of everyone AGAIN (I would love it if that happened again, when she did that in Seizure was like %!#$^@!#)
When I emailed Kathy Reichs, she told me that she was making this and I died. I ship Ben and Tory so hard!!! I swear to god if she kills any of them, I will die...again. THIS BOOK NEEDS TO COME OUT NOW!!!!!
Holy shit! This installment though! It was so tense, the entire way through, there was one point where I was holding my breath as I was reading and there was never a moment when I wasn't totally glued to the page, totally engrossed in what was going on, I couldn't put this down for anything, not even eating.
The book starts so incredibly, creepily perfect. We get a mysterious surveillance report, detailing a conversation between Tory and Chance, then the creepy prologue and it's the perfect start to the book to be honest, it sets up the tone for the book, a problem and intense danger both at the same time. This time the stakes are even higher, this isn't them facing a killer or following clues, this is them fighting to not be kidnapped and never seen again, secreted away in a lab and dissected.
This book had an entirely different tone, it was tense from the go, and majorly creepy with the suited guys following them about, the stakes where higher than ever before. It's like a mysterious book, with hints of war in it, because seriously, there where some serious tactics going on in this, and then it was like any alien film or book you've ever read where something alien or different or supernatural is hunted and then locked in a lab to be taken apart. There's no clues, no treasure to follow and find, this is pure survival and it was...well...intense. It's the only word.
I've gotta say, I liked the creepy surveillance reports, it kept the book fresh and it was interesting to see what was going on that they didn't know about, what others knew about them, I mean they talked to Hannah and the Gamemaster and other various people, and it was interesting to see how some of them where doing, what became of them and what they saw that they shouldn't have. The first one reminded you of the events at the end of Exposure, and set the tone like I said, the rest added intrigue and a hell of a lot of it.
One thing I have to note...Madison being nice. I love it. She's on the football team with Tory and wants to be friends, and I enjoy the fact Tory could be about to have another female friend, even though at the end of the book she was kinda keeping her distance because of something Ella did, but still. She didn't even tell the MIB's what she saw, and we all know she saw Tory's eyes. Although her and Jason...didn't see that coming, I still find it a bit weird, and I'm unsure if we'll see less of Jason at this point?
The entire group's dynamics have changed at this point, Chance is working with them, trying to solve how what happened...happened, and what's likely to happen next. None of it good, they might not be done evolving and then they might die. But anyway, Ben and Chance don't really get along, and the gang have trust issues with Chance. As much as I like Chance, I had trust issues with him, I mean when the agents nab them? I sat there for 5 minutes thinking I'd pegged him wrong the entire time, then carried on reading and was like "as if the author just played my emotions that easily!".
Whitney continues to tick me off, but she slightly redeemed herself in this book. I mean, what annoys me most about her is her making Tory do this cotillion gig, then not even letting her do the project she wants to do, like I said before, I can't stand being forced to do things I'm not down for, and it grates me seeing it happen in the book, especially as Kit goes along with Whitney, oblivious to his own kids discomfort. Like seriously dude? I was so gutted when they announced they where getting married, but then when Kit dropped the moving bomb, Whitney surprised me, it was so...un-Whitney.
This book was a bit of a shocker character wise. Chance said he's in love with Tory, and seeing as I ship them, I was all "awwww" and super excited, Madison, Whitney being surprisingly not stupid for once, but most importantly Ella.
This book had SO MANY twists I did not see coming. SO MANY. Cole. Jason and Madison. Chance. Ella. Most importantly Ella. I seriously did not see it coming, but I got the most sinking feeling ever at the description of the third member of the Trinity, I just didn't want to believe it. Like wow. She REALLY hated Tory and I was SO gutted, so so gutted. I love their friendship and I love Ella, she's one of my favourite characters! But it was all good in the end, and look at Tory being all forgiving and yeah. I'd be hella mad if things hadn't been resolved but it's all good.
I am, however, still incredibly gutted about the bunker. Like where are they going to meet now?! How could you destroy it?! Nooooooo! It's one of my favourite locations in the book, and always makes me jealous that I don't have one!
There was romance in this book guys, in between the action and danger and shocking twists, subtle romance, but it was there. So like, I ship Chance and Tory, and he said he loved her and she was having some feelings and there was a kiss that was described as waaaaay better than her kiss with Ben, but whatever. My ship sunk. She chose Ben, so don't worry there's no love triangle. I was gutted, especially when Chance was all moving on like 5 seconds later with Ella. But whatever. Ben and Tory are quite cute I suppose. We just need to find Shelton and Hi someone now muahahhaaaa
Terminal is everything I have come to expect from this series, slick, engrossing, action packed, funny, intriguing, fascinating, I learned some cool science things, the book took a different spin than the others keeping it fresh, and it was genuinely enjoyable. The books just keep getting better and better to be honest, there's always a new twist, a new element, a new take, and the virus is ever evolving. The books, Terminal being no exception, are always unpredictable and full of shocking twists you don't see coming, and they always have killer endings.
I've had a prowl on GoodReads, and there's no other book listed. Now things have been wrapped up quite nicely....mostly....if you don't count the fact Tory's eyes where glowing blue at the very end. I'm assuming there's another book, if there is, I'm even more excited, because clearly they aren't as Viral free as they thought, and it's changed or something and who knows what the hell happens next! On the other hand, if this was the last book, then that's cool, it's been wrapped up quite nicely, the blue eyes thing leaves you hanging a bit, but it's also pretty obvious what has happened, and it's equally as fun to imagine for yourself what might happen next, or become of them. It's a strong series, and if this is the end, then it had a strong end, if it's not, then I look forward to another awesome instalment, but I can understand if the series has come to a natural end with no other way forward.
This week has been a bit of a journey and I can't thank the publisher enough for sending me not just Terminal, but the first four books so I could read them all. I've read all the books back to back and been on quite the journey with Tory and her friends, and I was hooked from the first page of the first book, never wanting the adventures to end, and I'm quite sad now I've finished the final book in my possession. It's fast become a favourite series of mine, each book incorporates some element I find intriguing and it's such a fresh series, serious, full of danger, but with some laughs courtesy of Hi and Shelton!
So yeah....Virals week is officially over. Whether this is the end for Tory or not, I'm gonna be re-reading this series for a loooonngg time!
Yes! This plot development is exactly what I felt the last two books were missing. Terminal wraps up the Virals books well, answering our burning questions but leaving us on a cliff hanger! 4.5 ⭐
* You need to have read the previous books to understand the events in this book.
After the events in the last entry, Tory and her friends finally find out everything about their superpowers with the help of new Viral Chance. Meanwhile another pack of Virals settles in town and they openly challenge Tory's pack for dominance. Then a secret division of the government shows up to capture them and the chaos is complete. Tory and her friends have to manage revelations, betrayal and being stalked in hopes of even coming out alive.
Pro's: + The pace of the story hooked me right away and when started I read it in one go. It is fast-paced, easy readable and you feel very immersed in the story right away. There is a hefty betrayal in there which made me go OMG no and I was a bit miffed when Tory and said character put their differences aside in the ending. + The overarching romance plot comes to a very predictable but satisfying ending. There were some hints to it in the previous book, but seeing it actually happen was very cute and you cannot help but wish the couple the best. + All characters go through a big development in this book, even the characters you're very familiar with. They all seem to find their peace in the end and after everthing that has happened you cannot help but wish them all the best in the end.
Con's: - There is an open ending. This book is the final book in the series and then they decide to have an open ending.. Eyes smoldering with pale blue flames, that suggests so many things, I cannot even comprehend it. Imagine the whole story getting everything you wished for but then they leave you hanging in the end, that is how this ending made me feel.
I truely loved this final entry in the Virals series, but the ending ruined that for me. I know there are a couple of novella's ( which I will read), but I wished there was some hope that the authors wll eventually continue the series in some way or another. This book was, until the ending, very enjoyable though. Full of actoin, less teenage drama then the previous entries and all the storylines coming together in the end was very satisfying.
Having Chance working with Tory and her pack was cool to see; helping them find answers to their change and tracking down the Trinity. I hoped that he wasn’t secretly feeding information to the Trinity pack, but there were a few suspicious things that were happening with him. He shouldn’t have been keeping so many secrets from Tory’s group, but otherwise I enjoyed seeing them teaming up together in this book.
As for the love triangle between Tory, Ben, and Chance, I honestly didn’t like Tory with either of them. Chance came from a rich family meaning that if Tory and Chance ended up together long term, her living style would change drastically. We already saw how Tory took to Whitney’s insistence that she join those cotillion events. That lifestyle isn’t for her and wouldn’t have worked out. And with Ben, I didn’t like his attitude. Through quite a few of these books, he had this angry, uptight, judgmental attitude that turned me off of his character. I desperately didn’t want to see them end up together either. Besides, I think that would be nice for a change. Why can’t the female character in a love triangle situation not choose either by the end? Why can’t she remain single?
I didn’t understand how setting up a trap for the Trinity by using the cure would do anything. The Trinity were acting all high and mighty before with “there is only room for one Viral pack in this town”. Why would they want the cure? It would have made a lot more since if they had used something else to lure the other team out.
And I really did not understand these kids by the end. The whole reason Chance decided to create a cure for the Viral disease was because he discovered that it wasn’t done mutating their DNA. Earlier in the book, that idea had terrified them because they didn’t know what was going to happen to their bodies next. Then, all of a sudden, they decided not to take it?
Other than those weird loopholes, this was a great wrap up to the series. This was a very action packed collection and had some great moments throughout it.
I first heard about the Virals Series a few years ago with the publication of Virals in 2011, since then I have eagerly awaited the publication of each new book. When I saw Terminal on NetGalley my request was in so fast, if you blinked you missed it, and although it took a while for it to be accepted I opened this one up the minute I finished reading my current read.
Terminal was everything I expected from the Virals, and from the authors, but somehow it managed to bring that little bit extra with it. I love the twist in the story with the new Viral pack, The Trinity, and I enjoyed seeing the differences between the two packs and the reasons for this change. The Trinity may be the newbies on the island, but they are not willing to share, and won't go down without a fight. But pretty soon these attacks draw the wrong attention, and The Virals find themselves on the losing side each and every time.
When I heard the title for this book, Terminal, the first thought in my head was it's name came for the final book in this series, but after reading this book, Terminal stands for so much more, and I am not going to tell you what. Terminal was a book full of action, adventure, and finally some decisions that had to be made. It had me laughing at The Virals, it had me crying over Coop, it had me speechless as events unfolded, unable to believe what I was actually reading, not wanting to believe what was being said or done. The final pages of the book broke my heart over the sacrifices that were made, but the last page left me with some hope, and a mended heart.
Final Verdict Terminal was a great end to a series that I have enjoyed from the beginning. I didn't want it to end, and even though Terminal isn't a small book, it was over far too soon for my liking.
I think this was a fitting end to the series I loved as a child. The Trinity were an interesting bunch and they definitely provided some mystery. I don't think I'll read any of the other books in the seies. I know there are novellas that are also apart of the series.
I didn't like the love triangle between Chance, Tori, and Ben. Mostly, it just highlighted how much better Chance was because he acted so much more mature than Ben. I've always preferred Ben as Tori's main love interest in the previous books, but I really didn't like him in this book. He was so childish and whiny and bossy. He always tried to tell Tori what to do, which made him seem insecure. Him fighting Chance near the end wasn't it, and the throwing jabs at Chance in life and death situations was irritating. I kept having to remind myself that I actually liked Ben and that he was my first choice love interest for Tori. But it was hard. I took off a star just because of him.
Surprisingly, Ella was my favorite character. I think I enjoyed how complex and nuanced she was. And I love that Tori has a female friend. I felt sorry for Chance the entire story. He had no friends and Tori's pack didn't seem to trust him.

Tory Brennan and the rest of the Virals gang are back in this conclusion to the Virals series. When a new Virals pack known as the Trinity issues a challenge to Tory's Pack saying there should only be one Virals Pack in Charleston, Tory and the gang accept their challenge not knowing that they have brought Government agents following them too. Can Tory and the gang fight off the new race of Virals which Chance Claybourne has started and get away from the agents before they become lab rats and is there a cure for their disease that makes them have Wolf-like powers and is terminal to their health? This and other questions will be answered once you read it for yourself.
This was a great final book of the Virals series. I enjoyed reading them and if you like books that include mysteries and more, then def check this YA book series out. You can find these books at your local library and wherever books are sold.
I really enjoyed this, but don't see how it could possibly end! That seemed like a cliffhanger did it not? My only complaint is the same as with all Kathy Reich's books, too much repeating of information already known by all readers. It's highly doubtful that anyone would start in with the last book of a series and therefore need all of these explanations. The standard template is the same as the other books, but the great thing about this series is it's used in a completely different way in every book unlike the Bones series. Sad it's over. I will miss Tory and her pack. I've always rooted for Tory and Ben, but he had some moments in this book especially where I thought, "damn, she does not want to have to deal with that!"
Not a good book. Tori and her pack are under siege by another pack and the men in the black cars. The jealousy because both are in love with Tori of Chance and Ben is overdone and gets boring by the end. Chance keeps secrets from the group that put them in danger. Over and over the pact puts themselves in danger. After overcoming the second pact, Tori's pact is taken by a secret group within the U.S. government who wants to find out the secret of the flares and pacts. I was so sick of Tori and how she refuses to tells information she knows. I hope this is the last book, I think Reichs has lost interest in the series.

Terminal by Kathy and Brendan Reichs is the last book in their Virals series (appropriate title 😄) Tori and her friends are up against a rival pack, some shadowy, government agency men-in-black and decisions about their future. I did the audiobook for most of this series. A decent wrap-up. Nice how the Low Country is part of the story. Some cliche moments but overall a good series. And I expected the last page ending 🤷🏼♂️ A good series if you’re looking for an easy action read and some interesting stories (one has pirates 🏴☠️)
I think it was 2012 when I first read the first book about the Virals. Now, almost ten years later I finished the last one. It feels weird to finish it and it kinda makes me sad...
I loved this book from start to finish. It was well written, exciting and had a great climax. The ending is beautifully written because it shows the great bond between the friends which is the one thing I loved the most. Still sad about their powers though...
MARCH 2015???!!! This series is killing me. First, the wait for Seizure. Then the wait for Code. Then the wait for Exposure. And now 9 MONTHS FOR THIS ONE??? I'm dying a little bit inside.
So sad the series is over! One of my all time favorites and trust me I've read a lot of books! They should totally write more a spin off series whatever but I NEED more virals in my life, totally recommend!
Quality Rating: Three Stars Enjoyment Rating: Four Stars
For the finale of a mystery series, there was a surprising lack of mysterious happenings and puzzles for the characters to solve. While I still liked the book, I felt the story itself had lost its direction: the last instalment of the Virals series should've been the biggest mind twister to the point where forgot that I wouldn't get to read about these characters again. Instead we still got an entertaining book, but not quite what I would've liked as an end to Tory's adventures.
I like Reichs' writing for its simplistic nature, but ability to include and expand on quite complicated scientific explanations and logical reasoning. Maybe I'm not selling it as the most exciting, but (when it's there) her action is still exciting to read and easy to follow. It's just that her ability to sustain dialogue for quite long periods of time isn't as easy to come by as you might expect. Having said that, the use of slang is sometimes unnecessary and feels a bit forced to try and make the characters seem younger. As a reader who's followed this series pretty much since it first came out, the information dumping about Tory and the Virals' previous adventures at the start was tedious - not least because it didn't actually remind me of the things that would've helped the story (for example her relationships with her new-found friends - sorry Ella, but I couldn't remember who you were). It puzzles me a little why it's there in the first place anyway, since the series is definitely one of those you need to read in order to understand what's going on.
The biggest issue in this book will be repeated loads of times in this review, and that is that Terminal wasn't really a mystery novel. I thought it was great that we were featuring other aspects of the story more heavily than usual, but the main storyline fell flat because it just didn't fit with the series, the characters or even the predicament they were in at times. The biggest disappointment from this was that I didn't feel as much anticipation or tension because there wasn't the awareness that something unknown was at stake. You don't get many proper YA mysteries - especially ones featuring so much accurate science - that have all-round strengths in characters and writing as well as story, and by losing this in the last book it just fell short of what I was expecting. I also found that it was a lot less inclusive for the reader; the wonderful thing about these books is that you can work out the puzzles along with the protagonists - this time it was more like a contemporary thriller that's just for the characters. One of the reasons for this was the romance: it took over most of the story. Though the romantic subtext has been around for a few books, up to this point there's been a good balance of that and the actual story. But this time the romance was clearly intended to be one of the biggest veins of the story, and it ended up dominating everything else. At times the girly teenage angst did feel like it was included for the hell of it, and could perhaps have been subtler for a more meaningful impact. On the other hand, there was a good conflict of feelings, and I'm proud of Tory for sticking up for herself within the love triangle - it just didn't fit with my love of the Virals series. As well as romance, we dived a little further into the sci-fi realm. Now I admit I'm being a bit picky here, but the dangers of their powers and how they could overcome them became a bit stupid. The solution became very convenient, and I again felt like what was their biggest problem wasn't treated as the main danger for them. (Spoiler) I understand that the Virals loved their powers and wanted to be unique, but let's be sensible: if the condition is going to eventually kill you, you take the curse - regardless if there's military officers out to experiment on you on top of it all. But the biggest let down was the climax: or shall I say what felt like a lack of one. There was a point where things looked bad for the characters, sure. But where was the tension? Where was the actual, immediate, tangible danger? Even Code two books back had bigger ending drama: at both points that could be considered the climax, none of the Virals seemed to be in too much serious danger (maybe we're supposed to imagine what could happen if they don't work something out, but after some of Reichs' other endings, it wasn't what I was after). It really did feel like saying goodbye, with all the references to the other stories, and the characters finally getting into the positions they'd been after the whole time, but it wasn't quite what I wanted. And I'm not sure it was quite what the Virals would've wanted either.
My sentimentality towards these characters sometimes overrides their stupidity, but overall I was happy to see the Morris Island pack together again. The sheer amount of minor characters featured at various points in this book overwhelmed me, but I appreciate the effort to link all their previous adventures together in their goodbye. Although Tory's expansive knowledge still comes across as a bit too convenient and mature of her fifteen-years, I still loved every minute of her. She makes some pretty stupid decisions in this book, particularly on the romance front, but her moments of practicality and quite honestly her actions throughout the whole series were more important to me. (This will be one of the only times I don't rant about an unnecessary love triangle.) I still don't like Chance, and, like Ben, still don't understand why they'd trust him with a crayon, let alone their secrets. I understand that Tory owes him, but the amount of times he goes back on his word and withholds information from them is clear evidence that he is not the best person to involve in your group that's already threatened. Ben, however, I do like. Though not as much as I think I'm supposed to. Honestly, he hasn't really changed that much in the series - apart from those anger issues - but he's become more and more important to the storylines. This was quite important to me, since at first glance he seems to be the typical male interest that doesn't really have anything else to bring to the table. But Ben's character and decision-making has developed gradually overtime, and now I get his genuine benefit to the group. Hi and Shelton felt sidelined in this book. Partly because they weren't involved in the love triangle, but also from the lack of mystery genre where they were usually given the opportunity to shine. All they were really given the chance to do this time was make sarcastic and freaked comments whenever they found themselves in inevitable trouble.
I can tell Reichs wanted to do a lot with this last book: there's links to the previous books, and new ideas spanning into different genres. And for once, I don't think the idea itself was a bad one - I love that Tory's faced with more adult decisions, and their abilities are now having consequences. But because of the length of the book everything just became rushed, and most of the little storylines were never developed. (Things like Kit and Whitney's relationship took a really interesting turn, and I would've loved to see how Tory dealt with her dad's decision beyond her initial reaction.) The easy solution to this was basically to have made the book longer.
I still liked Terminal (admittedly mostly from sentimentality) and I think any fans of the series would enjoy it. We steer away from the mystery adventure style the books had been taking, and delve further into the realms of something between contemporary and sci-fi. I like where the characters are now - and do really hope to see them in a future seres (please Kathy, please) - but the way we got to the end of the road wasn't what I expected.
Three stars for nostalgia, but I have some major qualms about this book and they could possibly be applied to the whole series.
Let's start with the simplest, smallest, tiny annoyance that is probably only a preference to me. Tory says (and thinks) the word: Blargh. I'm not even kidding. This word makes me think she's puffing out her cheeks with air and explosively pronouncing the "b", and you can add in crossed eyes as well. I'm 200% sure you don't want a heroine to look like they're throwing up (without the vomit) to the reader, and it's not like it only happens once or twice. It's actually more often than I thought. More around five times at least. It's absolutely the worst word you can use to describe frustration. That's another thing, Blargh is not equal to frustration. It's more of a sound you make when you don't want to eat something that looks and smells like it'll taste horrible. Think of the sound a Boomer makes in Left 4 Dead and you're nearly spot on to how this actually sounds.
Second, love triangle. Or should I say square? This is ridiculous and stupid, and honestly I'm done talking about this with books. Every book that has a love triangle immediately loses a star from now on. Love itself isn't the problem. The problem is the triangle. Move on and think of something different. Good Lord Almighty.
Third, THIS IS A SPOILER, the book is titled Terminal because the disease is found out to be terminal in the book by Chance who tells the Virals. He's working on a cure though, so all's good they'll just take that when he finishes. When we get to the scene where they are about to take it. They back out. WHAT THE HELL? So they chose to die over going back to normal? What the Actual Hell? What the hell?! Seriously, I get that they're teens, but they write them saying they're super smart and they make them pull this shit? Eventually, they do take the cure, but writing them stupid enough to turn it down once seems like bad writing. Like maybe they forgot they had written that they'd freaking DIE if they didn't give up being Viral.
Fourth, these grudges are held way too long. Oh, I don't like Ben because he's betrayed us. HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. He didn't know what he was getting into. He was mislead and used, LIKE ELLA. Christ. You get that Ella should get a pass but screw Ben. That is, until, you actually do screw Ben. No, he gets to be hated while Ella is forgiven immediately. She doesn't even recognize, Tory that is, this hypocrisy! So much for being smart, eh? They write Ben like like a dumb jock that's only good for his strength as well, but they make Tory pick Ben over Chance. The scientist that has brains that match hers. I kinda get that though. Chance is a bit too old to be hanging with teens in high school still. How many Seniors do you see hanging with Freshman or Sophomores? Now try to apply that same thought process to someone who's graduated, and apparently sophisticated, still hanging with high school kids. Not happening, right? Ben's grudge against Chance is more understandable, but only from his perspective, as he's written in THIS book. Not in the sense of how the book the written, meaning: If you look at it from an author 's POV it's bordering on the WTH side of the scale again. He's a teen, but supposedly he's smart enough to hang with Tory, Hiram, and Shelton. He should be smart enough to hold a grudge against Chance and not totally screw up cooperating with him due to personal issues.
You know, I had this at three stars while writing this. It's getting a two now, but it still has one star over what I'd give it if not for nostalgia. I started this series in high school, and I wanted to finish it. Jesus, though, authors need to think a little about teenagers they portray in books. Honestly, I was considered smart during my education and these decisions are nowhere near what I would make or consider even a quarter of the time. Teenager doesn't equal stupid or irrational constantly. In certain situations, yes, teens are horribly stupid. Not all the time, not all decisions, and definitely not if they're supposed to be smart.
One more thing. I don't remember where it was or what it was, but there was a clue that they were trying to figure out and it was glaring obvious. It was so easy to understand and put together. Again, if they're smart, they'd be able to figure this out quickly as well.
Eh, one more, there was a sign they read that said something like D.O.D. Special something or other... and Tory didn't know who they were. Everyone and their grandma knows D.O.D. means Department of Defense.
What a journey. It's not exceptionally cringe-y, but lord is it a fail.
Oh Odin, just read the epilogue. Kill me now before we get a real cringe book. They left it open for more.
You know, no, I'll be confident. They'll probably write her better as she ages...
Or not.
Please.

Synopsis: A terrifying new Virals adventure for Tory Brennan – great niece of Dr Temperance Brennan – and the Virals team as they come face to face with their greatest enemy. From the producer of the hit TV series Bones and No.1 Sunday Timesbestselling author of the Temperance Brennan series.
Tory Brennan and the Virals are forced to confront the existence of a rival pack – The Trinity – who wants them off the scene – declaring war by engraving ‘One Territory. One Pack’ on a local landmark. What’s more this pack’s powers seem stronger and their eyes glow red rather than golden when they flare.
Chance Claybourne, who now owns his father’s pharmaceutical company, shares The Trinity’s powers – he accidentally infected himself and his ex-lab tech Will Speckman. Chance claims he’s on Virals’ side but can they trust him? And if Speckman is one of The Trinity, who are the other two?
As the tension mounts between the two packs an even greater threat looms. Covert government agents are closing in on them, determined to find out exactly how their powers work, to experiment on them. Have The Trinity pack given them Virals to save themselves? Or are both packs at risk?
Review: An exciting fifth installment of the brilliant YA Virals series featuring Tory Brennan and the boys from Morris Island. A well written, terrifically entertaining story that held my interest throughout - it's a real page turner. One of the things I love about this series is the interaction between the Virals - Tory, her wolfdog Cooper, neighbour Ben and schoolfriends Hi and Shelton. They are all such different characters and the banter between them is great. It's funny enough to make you chuckle yet serious when needed. The new gang in town threaten the Virals' very existence and cause no end of trouble for Tory and her friends. But they won't be let off lightly. When the gang seek an unlikely ally in Chance, fireworks really do go off and a battle commences. I couldn't put it down! A love triangle develops to complicate proceedings further - I adored that! I honestly couldn't see which way things were going to go and was surprised at the very end of the book, when the choice is made. Brilliant stuff!
