After reading one of Zenobia's letters to her brother, Ariq is more convinced than ever that she holds dangerous secrets, and that it's not in his best interest to allow her to get too close to him.
Easier said than done, on both their parts.
Having to bide their time in the smuggler's dens, we meet the twins: two ruthless and creepy rulers of one of the dens, as well as someone from Zenobia's past...
This one was a bit slower - I'm spoiled, I admit it, Brook's dialogue is so addictive that when the story necessarily needs to spend some time advancing the plot, like a ninny I go, "But... the witty repartee... I need it..."
But this instalment ended on such a high note!
I was a bit under the weather, so I haven't been following this as assiduously as I should have, which means I got to gorge myself on 3 instalments at once. That's the worst! Now I'm debating whether or not to read Part IV right away, or just hoard it for a while longer. This is like a sickness! I love it.

The Kraken King and the Fox's Den Chapters 9-12.
Wow. This part was a lot of fun. Lots of action and adventure, zombies, and even a damsel in distress.
First of all, Zenobia realizes that she is more and more attracted to Ariq, but Ariq has grown suspicious of her. This is a slow burn romance and I love how they see each other. We get to see some more of this world, notably the marauder's dens, definitely scary places. The Fox's den was one of the creepier places - those Twins were freaky! And the Rat den - crazy!
Zenobia manages to do some silly things and get herself kidnapped (again!). Ariq to the rescue and he is a force to be reckoned with. My hero! *swoon*
One of my favorite lines: (and I had to share this)
"Is that what you tell all the den lords?"
"No, I just give them kraken cock."
Once again, the world building in this series is absolutely amazing. The author does not spare any detail and the writing does not feel bogged down at all. As for the romance, the buildup is exquisite.
The Kraken King serials are being released weekly starting mid-April. A full novel will be available probably around the fall. (Goodreads shows August, but the author's website says that the date has been pushed back). Should you purchase each installment or wait for the book? Personally, I'd prefer the entire book and I would wait. However, Meljean Brook is one of those authors on many auto-buy lists and it's always a treat to read her books as soon as they come out. The serials sell for about $2 each; I'm not sure what the book would cost. It's up to you.

Wow! Now this is what a serial should be! Each section is its own, it doesn’t feel as if someone broke a book into sections and left us hanging specifically because she could. The anticipation of the next section isn’t because I was left on a giant cliffhanger, but because the writing and story are just so good! I can’t wait to dive into Part IV!
We see Zenobia and Eriq trying to keep their distance from each other, but we also see how hard that is for them to do. Add into it, that they are now deep into the smugglers’ dens, and have no choice but to stay and hope that danger doesn’t find Zenobia. But of course it does.
Ariq still doesn’t know who she is, but he does know who she isn’t. She isn’t just a lady’s companion travelling to the Red City. She is so much more. While her name means nothing to him, many others recognize it, and at one point, even she is recognized…and there’s an attempted abduction!
I loved the way this ended. I feel that this serial only gets stronger with each addition, and I am so excited to see what happens next, since they are at their destination and Ariq and Zenobia are due to part ways soon.

I wasn't excited about a serial format for this story, as usually I'm too impatient to wait for each section. And while yes, I'm dying to start the next section as soon as I finish the prior, there is a satisfying bulk to each individual story. Ariq and Zenobia are interesting, well developed characters, and watching their budding romance is as entertaining as the epic adventure that surrounds them.

In this latest Kraken King installment, we get introduced to the five smuggler’s dens as Ariq goes around to the various leaders trying to find information as to who is behind the marauders attacks on the airships around his town and the surrounding area. It was really interesting to meet these leaders, learn how they each lead their people differently and to see Ariq play them off each other in his push for information. Ariq’s the governor of Krakentown for a reason, and seeing him navigate these dangerous characters while still getting the information he wants was fun to watch play out.
We also get our first abduction attempt on Zenobia. The poor girl just can’t catch a break. Being connected to her brother has put her in harms way many times, men thinking that by kidnapping her for ransom, her brother will pay them anything. What I loved about this abduction sequence was the role Ariq plays. He sees first-hand the danger Zenobia is in on an almost daily basis, why she has to have bodyguards and that her being hurt is unfortunately something that she’s grown used to, first because of the fists of her father and now because of the multiple kidnapping attempts.
I loved seeing Ariq’s eyes open to Zenobia and the danger she’s in, I also loved seeing the bad ass side of Ariq come out full force, I mean the Kraken King certainly lives up to his scary reputation. But I also love that this feels like a turning point for these two characters. They’re both so obviously attracted to each other, but because of some miscommunications, some lies that have been told and some truths that need to come out, the tide is turning and they’ve reached the point where Zenobia needs to start coming clean to Ariq. He’s on to her and he’s not going to let her get away with being silent anymore.
To be continued… GRRRR ARGH!!!
With new tears clogging her throat, she clung to his solid form and buried her face against his shoulder. So strong. So warm. He smelled like smoke and the sea, and this was the only time, the last time she could hold him like this.
“I’m leaving tonight,” she told him hoarsely. “I’ve arranged for an airship.”
“I know. I’m leaving with you.”

The third instalment of what is turning out to be a cracking steampunk series. Fans of this author will not be disappointed and it's a fabulous introduction to what is still quite a new genre to many. Filled with incredible world building and often hilarious dialogue this series is an amazing find and one not to be missed!
Ariq is many things ,he is governor of Krackentown, a former soldier and now a man consumed by lust for the perplexing Zenobia Fox! She's survived an airship attack, drowning at sea, death by giant worm and now fights against the incredible attraction for Ariq! Oh he wants her and he's pretty sure that if she were to be brutally honest she would admit the same but Zenobia is not what she pretends to be. She's sending letters written in code and Ariq cannot just stand idly by and allow those he's sworn to protect get hurt .
So the charade continues ...for now! Ariq has agreed to help Zenobia and her friend Helene reach Red City but the danger they all face is catching up. Marauders are attacking and if something isn't done soon the Empress will wipe out all who stand against her. Traveling inland leads Zenobia directly into the path of danger and worse , an old enemy !
So much detail has gone into this book. I am thoroughly riveted by this story and each instalment just ramps up the tension . I've read steampunk stories before so am quite used to the amazing machines and engineering often mentioned but this author has included subjects that astound me , I mean giant worms, zombies? Trust me this series is so original and full of surprises that each page feels like a revelation and it's truly such fun!
Yes there is a romance building but it's part of the story and not just an excuse for the story. I don't know which I'm enjoying the most, the fledgling relationship that's brimming with sexual tension or the incredible world building . No I think I've decided , it's such an amazing ride that I just love it all!

Talk Supe review
The title for this third volume has dual meaning. Initially I thought Meljean Brooks meant that Ariq, The Kraken King, is finally going to bump uglies with Zenobia Fox hence the Fox's Den. Get it? Yup mind on the gutter but in a way part 3 is a little something like that but pertaining more to Ariq tearing down Zenobia's emotional walls than sexy time.
Another odyssey, Zenobia and company are steadily pushing to reach Australia so her friend, Helene, can be reunited with her husband. Lots of adventure along the way and I am loving the complex and immense world of steampunk MBrooks created for her series. It's so detailed it's the proverbial rabbit hole and I'm loving every wondrous detail. For example, Kraken penis, yes PENIS, fetch for a pretty price and can be used to barter favors and such... annndd it's also a delicacy (insert gag). There are lands that are lawless, you can kill, rape or do what you want at your own risk. As long as you don't anger the leader of that area, you're basically good. I love the short lesson about the various dens too and the leaders of the Fox's Den in particular, a set of creepy twins, gave me the shivers but I did like their fashion sense, their goggles sounded really cool. There was also another attempt to kidnap Zenobia thankfully it was foiled. Seriously, I think MBrooks should stop getting her abducted, it's getting old.
Like Verity Hart vs The Vampyres, the romantic tension in this volume is also building to a boiling point. Ariq is more and more determined to get involved with Zenobia and it looks like the latter won't be able to hold down the fort for too long. Can't wait to see how that will unfold.

4.5 stars - 4.5 stars - This episode finds Zenobia and the Kraken King in the Smuggler's Den, another vividly drawn corner of the Iron Seas world ...
On the romance front, Ariq knows that Zenobia has secrets, so he tries to put distance between them - and fails miserably. As he continues to learn more about Zenobia and is determined to protect her, it is clear that his heart is not iron when it comes to Zenobia. The more I learn about this pair the more I love Ariq, who is still a rebel at heart but fights in an entirely different way now, and Zenobia, who is cautious about those she lets close to her but is as unable to keep her distance from him as he is to her.
This episode ends very well, can't wait for more.
As a side note, I skipped the excerpts at the ends when I read Part I & II, since I'd already read the Iron Duke, but it was worth reading the one here for Heart of Steel because Zenobia appears and it was neat seeing her way back when.
I received a complementary copy of this story for review (but I had pre-ordered my own copy of all the books eons ago, and at a third of the way through I can already tell that these are going on my keeper shelf:)

Part III
Things in the romance department are heating up in this third entry to The Kraken King serial. And it's a very welcome development! Both Ariq and Zenobia are endearing and interesting characters, and the tension between them is palpable. Can Ariq's bluntness and shameless honesty break down Zenobia's inhibitions after such a blow to her pride? I can't wait for part four to find out!

It's pretty impressive, when you think about it, that the publisher can break this story up into, what, eight sections? And so far they've been three for three. All of them have good character development, some fun action, good romantic tension. It may have been written with that in mind, but still. Pretty impressive that they're all good.

A trip through the smuggler's den. The more Ariq enquires into Zenobia's past, the more he is convinced that it is for the best if he stays away from her.
True to Zenobia's penchant for attracting trouble, she catches the attention of one ex-kidnapper. The results of that particular alteration made my hidden cavewoman heart go swoooon!

Part III opens with our band of travelers finding temporary refuge in a mining area while Cooper's leg is fixed and he heals from his boilerworm attack. However, the group quickly heads off to the Smuggler’s Den, where the majority of this part occurs. Having misunderstood what he saw in Zenobia’s letters, Ariq attempts to build walls around his heart and keep clear of Zenobia, just when she is finally ready to give herself to him. The focus of Part III is both the growing relationship between Ariq and Zenobia, but also securing safe passage to the Red City for Zenobia and Helene.
I have to say that Part III, The Kraken King and the Fox's Den, is by far my favorite section to date. The overall story continued to move forward, yet it was the nuances of the finer details which captured my heart and imagination. First, the visual imagery is fantastic as always. From how Zenobia describes the tension she observes between Cooper and Mara, to what Ariq thinks and feels about the twin sisters who govern the Fox’s Den.
I also enjoyed getting to know Ariq in more detail - to learn of his desires to save the oppressed. How he is fair but firm. How he wants to keep Zenobia out of his heart, but it’s too late. His loyalty to both his town and to those he cares about is such an admirable and swoon-worthy trait. I think my favorite moment was when he approached Mara and Cooper to talk about how best to protect Zenobia. His honesty is so touching and appealing.
And Zenobia is such the fantastic heroine. Her wit is simply sublime. But I adore that she loves her life - she is sheltered and it doesn't bother her. She enjoys the distance she keeps between herself and her friends. The only one she will allow to "barge in" is her brother. I admire that she will fight to keep her freedom and lifestyle and doesn’t feel the need to conform to society’s expectations.
The sexual tension between Ariq and Zenobia is outstanding. It is amplified by our capablity to see into both characters' minds and hearts. What I appreciate is that the issues and problems driving a wedge between the couple, while they are mostly misunderstandings, hold some basic truth behind the concerns. And the consequences of any wrong action could be the lives of the people closest to both. The conflict and hidden truths are well-established, so the back and forth nature does not feel contrived.
At this point, I freakin’ LOVE The Kraken King! Part III not only furthered the adventure, but Zenobia and Ariq’s relationship. We also get a deeper understanding of both characters. Just wonderful. And most of all… leaves me desperate to read more. I’m definitely hooked now and there is no going back.

Part III opens with our band of travelers finding temporary refuge in a mining area while Cooper's leg is fixed and he heals from his boilerworm attack. However, the group quickly heads off to the Smuggler’s Den, where the majority of this part occurs. Having misunderstood what he saw in Zenobia’s letters, Ariq attempts to build walls around his heart and keep clear of Zenobia, just when she is finally ready to give herself to him. The focus of Part III is both the growing relationship between Ariq and Zenobia, but also securing safe passage to the Red City for Zenobia and Helene.
I have to say that Part III, The Kraken King and the Fox's Den, is by far my favorite section to date. The overall story continued to move forward, yet it was the nuances of the finer details which captured my heart and imagination. First, the visual imagery is fantastic as always. From how Zenobia describes the tension she observes between Cooper and Mara, to what Ariq thinks and feels about the twin sisters who govern the Fox’s Den.
I also enjoyed getting to know Ariq in more detail - to learn of his desires to save the oppressed. How he is fair but firm. How he wants to keep Zenobia out of his heart, but it’s too late. His loyalty to both his town and to those he cares about is such an admirable and swoon-worthy trait. I think my favorite moment was when he approached Mara and Cooper to talk about how best to protect Zenobia. His honesty is so touching and appealing.
And Zenobia is such the fantastic heroine. Her wit is simply sublime. But I adore that she loves her life - she is sheltered and it doesn't bother her. She enjoys the distance she keeps between herself and her friends. The only one she will allow to "barge in" is her brother. I admire that she will fight to keep her freedom and lifestyle and doesn’t feel the need to conform to society’s expectations.
The sexual tension between Ariq and Zenobia is outstanding. It is amplified by our capablity to see into both characters' minds and hearts. Ms. Brook ramped up the intensity in the last installment with some truly delicious sexual tension between Zenobia and Ariq and a tense, action packed scene where our characters fight for their lives against a boilerworm.

After the boilerworm attack, Zenobia and her companions have even more reasons to accompany Ariq and his people to the smuggler’s dens. Zenobia still has to get her friend Helene to Red City before her secret gets out and now they must also find a competent blacksmith to help Cooper recover from his injuries. The only problem is Zenobia is attracted to her Kraken King more than ever, but he has discovered several things about her that worry him and has decided to distance himself until he can figure out who exactly she is and what she knows. The distance between them only serves to heighten Zenobia’s doubts about Ariq’s true feelings and intentions. Their romance is still simmering, the intensity still slowing building. I can’t tell you guys how truly engrossed I am with this couple and how captivated I am by their developing relationship. It takes some serious talent to keep readers engaged in a slow building romance when they are forced to wait a week between each installment.
The smuggler’s dens are described in exquisite detail as Ariq visits several of the leaders in hopes of obtaining more information about who is behind the marauders attacks on the airships. Readers are introduced to some truly creepy villains, especially the twins who rule over the Fox’s Den. While Ariq is meeting with different leaders, Zenobia is left on her own and must make a couple of important decisions about whether to stay with her injured protectors or leave immediately with Helene. That’s when she gets into some serious trouble and Ariq comes to her rescue.
This installment contains chapters 9-12 and leaves off on another exciting development. So far this serial has everything I’ve come to expect from a Meljean Brook steampunk: action, adventure, wonderfully detailed world-building and a lovely slow burn romance between a strong heroine and a hero who isn’t afraid to break a man in half to rescue his girl. Final Grade- B+

Part 3 of our adventure finds the travelers finally reaching the smuggler’s den after their altercation with the boilerworm. Stopping at the den not only gives Ariq a chance to find out where the marauders bought their flyers, but it gives Cooper, Zenobia’s guard, a chance to get new legs grafted after he lost his other ones to the worm.
At this point, Ariq has discovered Zenobia’s letters to her brother and finds the connection between her and Archimedes Fox. Although he still doesn’t have the entire story correct, he’s promised himself to help her out of her situation. Still Ariq’s wary of her, so he’s distancing himself in order to be able to do his job. This cold-shoulder hurts Zenobia more than she would like to admit, even though she’s supposed to leave his company forever in a few days time anyway.
I’ll admit, while I find the misdirection/miscommunication on their parts to be humorous at times (with how off they are in their thinking of each other), I’m ready for the truth to be out in the open. I’m ready to see the reactions the true revelations of Zenobia’s secrets will cause, if any. At this point there’s been so much back and forth in Ariq’s head about who Zenobia is, I really don’t know what he’ll do when she tells him her whole story.
The Kraken King and the Fox’s Den was less action-packed than its predecessors. Instead, there’s more focus placed on the characters. We learn a lot about Ariq’s past. We learn how he was given his name ‘The Kraken King’ and we get to see how much power he truly has, and how he’s not corrupted by it, but how he uses it to do good by the people who trust him with their lives and give help when needed.
We all know Zenobia’s past of abuse by her father, as well as the kidnappings by people looking to ransom her for her brother’s money. Even though she’s very careful with herself, trouble will still find her. Zenobia isn’t one to play the victim. I loved that Meljean Brook wrote a very strong-willed character who is prepared to defend herself, and sets the blame on those who would do her harm rather than any weaknesses on her part.
Cooper and Mara also stood out for me in this installment. Starting after the boilerworm attack, we’ve been getting to see more personal moments between the two guards, as well as the affection each of them has for Zenobia. They’ve gone beyond just being her bodyguards, they’ve become cherished friends as well. I would love to read a separate short just about Mara and Cooper.

Zenobia, Ariq and company arrive in the dangerous Smuggler’s dens, looking for someone who can repair Connor’s legs and more news on the Marauders whose attacks risk enflaming the wrath of the Nipponese Empress
Ariq has to navigate the treacherous politics of the town to find the information he needs, while Zenobia is pulled by divided loyalties; and her carefully hidden identity is close to being revealed.
I don’t think I’ll ever get used to “episodic” novels – teeny tiny books each telling a few chapters. Books released as soap episodes or comics; frankly, they leave me frustrated every time I reach the end of them because I want more, I want the story to continue, I want the story to get going and not have these unnecessary breaks that just derail the plot and the development and stops me getting the full epic feel
It’s especially bad when we have a series as good as this one. I love Zenobia, she has such an excellent combination of strength and vulnerability – determination and fear. She constantly lives under threat of kidnap because of her brother’s antics and success but at the same time craves adventure and freedom. She’s practical enough to seek protection but frustrated by the intrusion it involves into her life. She’s sensible, snarky, strong willed and not willing to let even her growing feelings for Ariq, the Kraken King, overwhelm her responsibilities to her people. I like that she’s more torn about leaving Mara and Connor than she is about leaving him behind
The same applies to Ariq, while he is definitely growing to care passionately about Zenobia, she is not – cannot – be his main priority. He’s a leader of a people under threat, he has responsibilities to them. Even beyond that, Australia is facing a major threat and he’s not going to check out of that just because he has fallen in love.
This is so rare in any books with romance – for love to be meaningful there’s a prevailing idea that it must be overwhelming and everything else cease to be a priority. I love this subversion of that – that Ariq and Zenobia can feel lust and love but still say “no, I have responsibilities, I have other priorities, I refuse to drop everything for this.”

Zenobia Fox a famous writer and the sister of the famous explorer Archimedes Fox, not that she would openly admit it though, it would only lead to yet another kidnapping where her brother would once again have to save her. But now she has the potential to have her own adventure whilst she accompanies her friend to Australia, not that she expects much to happen. Of course her journey takes an interesting turn when her ship is attacked and she is rescued by none other than Ariq, more popularly know as the Kraken King.
It looks like Meljean Brook has jumped abroad the band wagon and given us a serial, so this review is actually for parts one to three of The Kraken King, which is the fourth book in the Iron Seas series. A series that I really need to read judging by the amount I really enjoyed the first three installments of this book.
The Kraken King has everything I love in a book; an exciting adventure filled plot, a heroine I really liked and connected with as well as a hunky hero I didn’t mind having a few fantasies about. It thoroughly absorbed me, before I knew it I found I have finished all three of the installments and was researching the release date for the next one! It left me with a desperate wish that the fad for serials ends soon so I can read a whole book, without having to wait a few weeks for the next chapter to come out!
The only issue I had was the world, it referenced people and events that although it didn’t need me to know the exact details, I felt I missed some meaning because I didn’t know who and what they were referring to. I believe these were things and people which the previous three books were about, which just shows that I shouldn’t break my own golden rule and start reading a series part way through.
I really enjoyed this, and I cannot wait for the next one to come out, in the mean time I am starting to read the first three books in this series, I have no doubt they will be just as enthralling as this one.

This is the third installment in the eight installment series called The Kraken King. This Kraken King as a whole is the 4th book in the Iron Sea series. I really enjoyed this continuation of the Kraken King story. This has been an excellent story full of action, adventure, steampunk, and romance.
In this installment Zenobia, Helene, and Ariq journey to the smuggler's den. Zenobia's main goal here is to get transport to the Red City. While she works on that Ariq is trying to track down the raiders that destroyed Zenobia's ship.
I continue to really enjoy Zenobia and Ariq as characters. They are likable, easy to engage with, and just a lot of fun to read about. There is still a lot of tension between Zenobia and Ariq that is well done. Although I felt like the scenes between Zenobia and Ariq were a lot less frequent in this installment, they spent much of the story apart from each other working on their separate missions.
The Smuggler's Den is a really interesting area to read about. There are some very quirky new characters introduced. I enjoyed them all. It’s a very creatively done area; there’s everything from the creepy Twins to a battle area where humans face off with zombies.
There wasn't as much action in this installment. However, there are a lot of politics between the different leaders of Smuggler’s Den. We also learn a lot more about Ariq's background and even hear some about how he got the name The Kraken King.
Although it is kind of killing me to read this in installments (I just don't like how you get jerked out of the story and have to wait a whole week to read the next section). The Kraken King has been a very good addition to the Iron Seas novels. I thought this installment was a bit weaker than the last two, but it was still very good.
Overall a solid installment in The Kraken King book. I have always loved the world of The Iron Seas. Brook is an excellent writer who has created some very engaging characters and a wonderfully imaginative world. This was an excellent combination of adventure, action, steampunk, politics, and romance. I definitely recommend the whole Iron Sea series if you are a fan of steampunk and don’t mind some romance with your steampunk.

Ok, so I'm assuming that if you're reading this, you've read parts 1 and 2 (but not necessarily this part, so no spoilers for that here).
Part III sees Zenobia and Ariq and their companions arriving at the smugglers' dens, after the boilerworm attack in their camp that injured Cooper, one of Zenobia's bodyguards. While Cooper's leg is being repaired, Ariq continues to seek information about the flyers that have been attacking airships in the area. It's quite clear the smugglers know something. Meanwhile, Zenobia wonders whether she should leave her bodyguards behind and push on to the Red City, to make sure her friend gets there in time to hide her pregnancy.
The plotty stuff and the world-building were fantastic here. I expected something completely different from the smugglers' dens, something more furtive and ramshackle. What we get is a sort of Wild West with different areas dominated by people who are a cross between warlords and the mafia. I found both the visuals and the social aspects fascinating.
One of my favourite moments in this part was Ariq's discussions with one of the smugglers, a young guy who's taken over one of the dens from the previous big boss and is trying to do his best, albeit in a way that Ariq finds very problematic. I found their interactions really touching, and the smuggler was one of those characters you just want to know more about.
But it's not just plot and world-building... oh, no! Part II ended with Ariq making a discovery about Zenobia's identity, and in this section, he bravely attempts to distance himself from her. And oh, the lovely, lovely, angsty longing! Things definitely move forward here, and in a way that really make me want to read Part IV asap! Well, I'm late writing this review, so my wait is almost over. I had visitors all week (thus my late review) and the last has just gone. As soon as I post this, my kindle is coming out!

The Kraken King books are actually book 4 of the Iron Seas series so make sure that you read the previous books The Iron Duke, Heart of Steel, and Riveted because there are some details that Meljean includes in the Kraken King books that may throw the reader if they haven't followed the previous installments.
For fans that have read the previous three books getting these additions are nice little nuggets to find for those that like to have a connection to the previous books in the series. I very much suggest reading the books in order otherwise it can be very confusing and a reader could fast become very confused or lost and lose the chance to read a really great series.
Although the books don't end at the third Kraken King book many plots get tied up and at the end so that there is some fulfillment but there are plenty of plot hooks that will continue on into the next books so be sure to read on so that you can continue to enjoy the adventures Meljean has created.
That being said Meljean has done a fabulous job immersing readers into the Steampunk genre. She has created a fantabulous world lush with so much life and vivid detail that the reader will feel as if they are living the journey for themselves.
The characters are amazing, so full of life and personality - not to mention chemistry that it sets of fireworks. About halfway through this one, I felt rather annoyed by Ariq and Zenobia. In fact, I decided I couldn't handle them and put it aside for a couple of days.. The pull and push between them, was just annoying. It felt like it was going on for forever, and I would have shouted at them to get over themselves if I wouldn't have been in a restaurant. So thankfully I have some sort of social awareness- which saved my kindle of being thrown against a wall and me throwing a hissy fit.
Well, maybe I am exaggerating at tad bit. But seriously I was really annoyed and not so sure I would get the next installment. Buuuuut I finished this one and now? Can Tuesday just come around really really quick please?
Yes it does get better, not that much happens between the two dorks. But Brook just gave me that crumb of hope for more in the next installment.
And now that I have finished it, I wondered if it feel worse since I am reading this over weeks, rather than in one sitting, like I usually do. Not sure, but I think it could be connected to it.
Then there is the world building. I think I say it every SINGLE time, but no one does steampunk quite like Brook. I love her dark gadety world. And each and every time I am completely flabbergast by shear astounding. As the story goes on and the MCs travel there are new undiscovered parts of this world, and each and every time Brook does a fabulous job at it. She every single time, goes far beyond my expectations. And let's just be honest, by expectations are huge when it comes to Brook.
So here I am waiting for tuesday. Despite, grumbling about the price of the serials, despite being super annoyed with the MC's I have pre-ordered the next serial already. So let's see what's next tuesday brings, shall we?

Altun Mining Camp, Nyungar Territory; the Twin's smuggler city;
Smuggler's city - 5 camps... Ariq trades sliced Kraken penis to find out who sold the air flyers that attacked Zenobia's airship - and then to track who purchased them...
and along the way, he meets with the new governor of one of the cities, who is not taxing his citizens - but is raising money by sponsoring arena games - biggest ones against zombies... and Ariq takes him down to the cages of zombies - and talked him through killing each one - reminding him how easy a plague that would wipe out the smugglers and Australia was one bite away... and then he left one of his men, who taught his gladiators how to take apart the Twins' mechanical men instead... a rebel at heart, teaching others to be successful rebels without anyone dying...
and she was restricted to their inn... and she watched the people outside... and she saw a typesetting machine in a shop down the street... and she decides she can blend in, and go to the shop & purchase it... but unfortunately, one of her previous kidnappers saw her through the window... and she makes an attempt to run, sees Ariq lowering from an airship, but is snagged by the kidnapper, and she is fighting him as hard she can, but he is roughing her up, telling her to be a good girl and she won't be hurt... and Ariq grabs him, breaks his back, and tells the other one to tell anyone he sees that Zenobia Fox is under Ariq's protection...
and Ariq goes to Mara (Mara and Cooper are still healing from his new leg transplants and cannot go) to ask not for Z's secrets, but what he needs to know to protect her... that she gets absorbed in her writing, that when she gives her friendship, it is all in - though she doesn't give it easily

In the Kraken King part 3, Zenobia, Ariq, and the rest of their party make their way through a gold rush town and end up in a smugglers den on their journey to The Red City. Ariq wants information as to who attacked Zenobia’s airship and stop any repercussions that would hurt his people in Krakentown. He’ll do anything to stop an attack and if that means locking Zenobia out after learning of suspicious letters and secrets she is hiding, then so be it. Zenobia doesn’t understand Ariq’s sudden change towards her but if that’s how he wants it, that’s fine because she has bigger things on her mind. She’s in a hurry to escort her friend to The Red City and she’s not about to let the hidden dangerous lurking in the notorious smugglers’ dens stop her.
The story continues with Zenobia and Ariq barely speaking to each other but no words are needed to feel the sizzling sexual tension between them. While searching for answers in a smugglers den, Ariq flexes his power and influence and displays what makes him a leader worth following and I can’t get enough of this man. He has no interests in being a hero yet in his own way he is. Only thing I wish is that he wasn’t so hard on Zenobia for having secrets while hiding his own. Speaking of Zenobia, I like her a little more with each story. For me, her strength lies in her quick wit, unusual imagination, and resilient heart. I want these two together so bad and I have faith that the author will not disappoint in the end but all the misunderstandings and secrets are torture!
Anyways, Meljean Brook doesn’t always paint a glamorous picture of her steampunk world but it’s vivid and wild and I’m enjoying every part of it.

A combined review for Parts III & IV:
With these two new additions to the THE KRAKEN KING serial adventure, Zenobia and Ariq are established, compelling, and off on their adventure. Moving from the comfort of Ariq’s encampment to the wider world, we get to see both Ariq’s political savvy and the price of Zenobia’s fame in action. Zenobia and Ariq have an undeniable chemistry, but loyalties to respective loved ones mean their keeping all of that heat under wraps for much of this journey… but not all.
While it’s common for two characters to resist attraction because of outside forces, the loyalties that divide Zenobia and Ariq are explored and supported in such a way that they add to the plot, rather than slow things down. Whether in criminal enclaves of The Red City itself, Zenobia and Ariq dance around each other with spy vs. spy moves, striking sparks with every pass. THE FOX’S DEN and THE INEVITABLE ABDUCTION both prove that the pressures of the outside world are a real and reasonable risk. Even better, though, facing these risks brings their fears out of the shadows and Zenobia and Ariq into each other’s arms.
Through each attack, abduction, and twist and turn, Zenobia and Ariq grow closer together and reveal their true natures. THE INEVITABLE ABDUCTION is my favorite part to date, as so many secrets are revealed and these two characters get to show off their strengths. Epic and romantic, THE KRAKEN KING is shaping up to be a romance to remember.

In this part of the serial we go deeper into the world Ariq and Zenobia live. The descriptions of the Smugglers' Den is strikingly vivid and shows us both the beauty and true horror of this new world.
We also learn more about Ariq and Zenobia mostly through their interactions with the other characters. And I can just say that Ariq is becoming impossible to resist not just for Zenobia but for me as well.
This part is full of action on the one hand and on the other there is a constant pull-push relationship between the main characters.
The romance is really slow here - there is some lack of communication and some doubts on both sides which get in the way of Ariq and Zenobia coming together. At the end, a violent situation with Zenobia, pushes both of them to act on their attraction and leads to a mind-blowing kiss kiss which makes things between them hotter than hot.

The unraveling of secrets is a big component of this installment. Ariq knows Zenobia is hiding something and he needs to figure out what. Zenobia knows Ariq knows something about her, but she's uncertain how much. Between the two of them, there's a vague disquiet and the simmering passion they're both trying to ignore.
Honestly, I like the push and pull between Ariq and Zenobia. They're both tenacious in their own way. They're both trying to figure things out. And despite how chaste things are between them, it's weirdly hot.
We get to see the machinations between the den lords, an honorable man trying to do the best he can for his people (although he's going about it in a dangerous way), and how Zenobia's life has hemmed her in.
Yes, I'm very much in love with these characters. Bring on the next installment!
