Michael and his friends must rescue a child prodigy as the thrilling action continues in this electrifying fourth installment of the #1 New York Times bestselling series!
Michael, Taylor, Ostin and the rest of the Electroclan head to China in search of a girl who may have discovered why Michael and his friends became electric. Her name is Lin Julung, or Jade Dragon, and she’s a child prodigy with an IQ higher than Einstein’s—and Ostin’s.
But Hatch gets to her first, and the Elgen are holding her prisoner in their Taiwan Starxource plant. Now the Voice wants Michael and the Electroclan to go to Taiwan and free her before Hatch can realize his dreams of an army of electric children.
The hunt for Jade Dragon is on, and it’s a race against time!
When Richard Paul Evans wrote the #1 best-seller, The Christmas Box, he never intended on becoming an internationally known author. His quiet story of parental love and the true meaning of Christmas made history when it became simultaneously the #1 hardcover and paperback book in the nation. Since then, more than eight million copies of The Christmas Box have been printed. He has since written eleven consecutive New York Times bestsellers. He is one the few authors in history to have hit both the fiction and non-fiction bestseller lists. He has won several awards for his books including the 1998 American Mothers Book Award, two first place Storytelling World Awards, and the 2005 Romantic Times Best Women Novel of the Year Award. His books have been translated into more than 22 languages and several have been international best sellers.
The Michael Vey series continues to deliver. As always, this was so fun to read.
The first third is a bit slow, with lots of planning and hanging out. This is also a time to get to know all the characters a bit better. The rest is exciting with plenty of action, with twists and surprises, in which they reunite with Nichelle and travel to Taiwan. There are a few things to nitpick, like how a watch would still run after being thoroughly soaked, and no way is Jack walking, swimming, and lifting with broken ribs.
The last two pages are a cliffhanger setup for the next book.
I’m also not crazy about the audio narrator, mostly because I have a firm idea of how the characters sound. I have done both the audiobook and an eyeball read on this book. One of my top favorite series.
Language: Clean Sexual Content: None Violence/Gore: beatings, gun threats, torture; not very graphic Harm to Animals: Harm to Children: Other (Triggers):
Like the other books, the writing isn't all that great. It's a fun story and my kids really like it. I was surprised how much action wasn't in it.
Someone REALLY needs to get the editor or author a thesaurus with the synonyms for "said" bookmarked and highlighted. Even by occasionally switching "(name) said" to "said (name)" would help tremendously. If someone asks a question, the customary thing to do is to say "asked" or the like, not "said." It's so irritating, it almost makes my head want to explode. Almost.
Loved this one! This one might be my favorite. This is my fourth book have read this month! I feel sorry for those of u who had to wait for the fifth installment because that ending.... That ending man! I can't believe Evans would do that!!(:
Thank you for giving me the chance to be someone else.
Loved the image of escaping through a fish tunnel. This makes sense when you read the book. Really cool to see into the mind of the Jade Dragon. Also like the way she's able to communicate her thoughts. Gorgeous cover too!
Best book ever i wish it didn't have to end it was amazing when I finished i wanted to throw it across the room because it left me hanging i can't wait till the 5th one comes out!!!
I received a free copy of the audio book for review. I have listened to this whole series on audio book and have come to really enjoy them. I was really looking forwarding to the new edition to the series but felt that this one fell short from what the other books have been.
There is not as much to the adventure even though they travel to Taiwan it felt to me that there was just a lot of standing around and waiting. The group did not want to be seen as to let Hatch know they were close so they stayed hidden and the story really fell short because of that.
The majority of the story was the group sitting around and talking, doing a little shopping. So when anything out of the usual happened the reader is waiting for, expecting and could see it coming by the time it eventually does.
I also felt that the narrator for the audio book on this one was a bit inconsistent with the accents of the foreign characters and at times it came off sloppy, mixture of accents in my opinion. While I must admit that this aspect will most likely not be noticed by the younger listeners, it didn't live up to what I have been getting from the first 3 books I listened to.
The Hunt for Jade Dragon addition to the series does have some important information and event that takes place that is necessary to read for the series, but by not cutting it shorter and combining it into the next book in the series led to a long read with little payout.
This is a series that I have enjoyed immensely so far and and I do recommend it for readers, great characters and a lot of traveling the world and seeing different cultures. I just feel this particular book fell short in comparison to the others.
It's getting kinda repetitive. Still enjoyable to listen to at work though. My brother said book 6 and 7 are more interesting so we'll see!! The cliffhanger though. It killed me!! My heart hurts:(
I haven't read the first 3 books since 5th grade so at first I was a little confused on who everyone was but later in I figured it out, the writing wasn't as good as it seemed to me in 5th grade but the book was really intresting and its kind of like percy jackson books.
My sisters and I almost never buy books new. I mean, it's an occurrence so rare it's practically nonexistent. But after getting Michael Vey 1: The Prisoner of Cell 25 from the library, we have bought every Michael Vey book as they are released. I wish I didn't have to wait until next year for book 5.
Writing: 4/5
The Michael Vey books are primarily written in 1st person, though there are usually 3rd person sections about other characters. I did like how in this one there were no lengthy portions about the bad guys as there were in previous books. I found those parts kind of boring, so I was glad Jade Dragon avoided it. It was written in an engaging matter that didn't dumb down language for kids. Maybe it wasn't the best at character point of view, and there were sections that were a bit confusing, but I still loved it.
Setting: 5/5
The Electroclan travels a lot. In the first book, though technically they're not the Electroclan yet, they go to Pasadena. Book 2, Rise of the Elgen, takes them to Peru. Book 3, Battle of the Ampere, sees more action in South America. In Hunt for Jade Dragon, they are first at a secret base somewhere in the U.S., and then travel to Taiwan. I'm not that well traveled, but I do know Richard Paul Evans has traveled to many of the places he writes about, and I think it makes it seem realistic. And the eels with yellow mucus on them. It makes it even more gross to have heard the author talking to Glenn Beck about how he and his daughter were actually served that.
Also, nearly forgot since this is book 4, but I haven't reviewed any of the others, so I haven't said it yet: The electric powers are extremely well done. For some superheroes, it doesn't really make sense how they got their powers. Like the Hulk. Gamma radiation would kill a person. The electric children gained powers when the MEI (can't remember exactly what it stands for, something to do with electric imaging) was tested early at a hospital in Pasadena. Most of the babies born during that testing period died, but seventeen survived, having been made electric. This electricity manifests itself in different ways for each electric child, giving them different powers. I personally think it was done in a very believable way. For sci-fi, anyway.
Plot: 4/5
I have sort of mixed feelings about the plot, mostly in regards to the pacing. I loved the story, I read the whole 300+ page book in two days. The second half of the book has a lot of action and several twists and turns that left me going, "Wait, what?" I liked the down time they got at the beginning, though my sister and further reflection have opened up some mixed feelings about that. I really did like that part, and no, I didn't mind Michael and Taylor getting to spend some time together when their lives aren't in immediate danger. It did, however, take up a significant portion of the book, though in story time it only took a few days, while Jade Dragon was still in the possession of the Elgen. My other complaint is with the climax. There was plenty of danger and action leading up to it, but when it actually came, it was like, boom, it's over. It also seemed a bit easy compared to how hard it was to make it to that point. But the lead up for the climax was awesome. All twisty and turny (just not timey-wimey). There are a few kisses, but it is never descriptive, and never anything beyond that, so the romance angle didn't bother me.
Character Development: 4/5
The characters in the Michael Vey books are fairly well developed. I feel like I know Michael and Taylor very well, Jack is decently developed, and Ostin is one who is impossible to ignore. The other members of the Electroclan aren't quite as well developed. This book especially focused on Michael and Taylor to the exclusion of the others, which I didn't really mind that much, but my sister did, so I suppose it's more of a preference. On the other hand, I don't have any difficulty remembering the various powers of the members of the Electroclan, though I wouldn't say I could describe the personalities of Ian, Abigail, McKenna, and Zeus. Oh, and Nichelle is back. That makes things interesting.
In conclusion, Michael Vey 4: Hunt for Jade Dragon does have some literary flaws, but I loved it nonetheless. I enjoyed it immensely, and will most certainly be back for book 5. And, though I rarely go to the movies (a lifetime total of 8 times now, it's so expensive), if movies are made of this series, I will definitely want to see them in theaters. Recommended for lovers of sci-fi and adventure.
The most annoying thing about the 4th Michael Vey book is that I really enjoyed the 1st two books and the 4th book is disappointing by comparison. A book series is supposed to go up in storytelling not down. When I look back at the 1st two novels in the series, they really weren’t great pieces of literature, but they were fun and interesting, something that Jade Dragon is not.
The big reveal in this book is that it is the 4th out of 7 books. I’m not sure how the author will stretch it out 3 more books when there doesn’t seem to be enough material to fill this book. Most of the book is tedious meaningless fluff that doesn’t need to be told over 200 pages. It has barely any action, mystery or excitement up to this point in the story with a 100 pages left to go. The moral ambiguity which destroyed the 3rd book for me is left unexplored and only touched upon as more attention is given to what the characters are eating. The good guys seem to have the same attitude in a lesser form about the value and meaning of human life as the enemy which is problematic.
The plot becomes predictable as you read along. The characters plan on sneaking into an Elgen compound of some sort (something that happens in every book) this time to rescue someone (3 out of 4 books so far). They do something really stupid because their hot headed and can’t let some petty situation just go. They also get captured by the enemy. Whoopee. Also certain scenes seem to just happen for no good reason other than to show how badass certain characters are. These scenes are written quite poorly don’t seem to happen in a natural way but in a way that just makes sure there there. Also just to note that the main villain is very clichéd which takes away from his menacing presence.
I’m not sure I care enough about the story to continue on with the last part of the book. It shouldn’t take 2/3 of the book to lead up to anything good. Any revelations about the characters are undermined by the simplistic writing and the underwhelming storytelling. There is nothing to challenge the reader in anyway. The fun that the 1st two books promised have been undermined by the last two books
PS. I finished the book. The other flaw worth pointing out is that they set up plot points that they never deliver on. Michael learns to deflect bullets but never does so against the enemy. Ninjas are guarding the plant but they never fight them. They also never fight the other electric children and never face Hatch. They also hastily setup another sequel at the end. I honestly don't understand the high praise this book is getting but true fans are sticking by it.
This one just seemed to drag on! Obviously I’m invested enough in the series to continue, but I hope this is a Segway to some bigger, better things. I love Jade Dragon’s character, the Taiwanese setting, and that the Electroclan got some downtime, but the pacing was off and the “twist” was far too predictable.
Alright.. I kinda feel like this series is like Phineas and Ferb. Like they follow the same pattern in every books but sometimes change the scenery and details.
“Hi Phineas! Whatcha doing?”
“Oh we’re building a roller coaster to space”
Rescuing Jade dragon. I feel like rescuing Jade dragon didn’t help evolve the plot of the series. Like it got us through the book but she didn’t end up meaning anything else in the series.
Okay. Unpopular opinion in 3, 2, 1. He needs to kill off characters we actually like. It’s too easy when you have this big a group with a variety of powers that get you out of almost any situation. It lacks depth. when you didn’t kill off people that matter no characters grow or develop.
Okay!! Zeus doesn’t make any sense. Like why can’t he touch water but everyone else can. And like the water shocks him cause of its conductivity? So like getting shoved next to metal wouldn’t hurt?? Also how does the resistance figure out the distilled water but the elgen who has to smell him for 10 years didn’t?? And if the elgen didn’t fin him to he was like 6, how did his mother not kill him. Ar some point she would’ve tried to bathe the child. ⚡️😷💩
I CANNOT WAIT TO READ THIS BOOK!!! I read the previous 2 in a day each, as soon as I could get my hands on them. I have been waiting since Christmas for this book!!!!
