Amanda Scott, USA Today Bestselling Author and winner of Romance Writers of America’s RITA/Golden Medallion (LORD ABBERLEY'S NEMESIS) and Romantic Times’ Awards for Best Regency Author and Best Sensual Regency (RAVENWOOD'S LADY), Lifetime Achievement (2007) and Best Scottish Historical (BORDER MOONLIGHT, 2008), began writing on a dare from her husband. She has sold every manuscript she has written.
Amanda is a fourth-generation Californian, who was born and raised in Salinas and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in history from Mills College in Oakland. She did graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in British History, before obtaining her Master’s in History from California State University at San Jose. She now lives with her husband and son in northern California.
As a child, Amanda Scott was a model for O’Connor Moffatt in San Francisco (now Macy’s). She was also a Sputnik child, one of those selected after the satellite went up for one of California’s first programs for gifted children. She remained in that program through high school. After graduate school, she taught for the Salinas City School District for three years before marrying her husband, who was then a captain in the Air Force. They lived in Honolulu for a year, then in Papillion, Nebraska, for seven. Their son was born in Nebraska. They have lived in northern California since 1980.
Scott grew up in a family of lawyers, and is descended from a long line of them. Her father was a three-term District Attorney of Monterey County before his death in 1955 at age 36. Her grandfather was City Attorney of Salinas for 36 years after serving two terms as District Attorney, and two of her ancestors were State Supreme Court Justices (one in Missouri, the other the first Supreme Court Justice for the State of Arkansas). One brother, having carried on the Scott tradition in the Monterey County DA’s office, is now a judge. The other is an electrician in Knoxville, TN, and her sister is a teacher in the Sacramento area.
The women of Amanda Scott’s family have been no less successful than the men. Her mother was a child actress known as Baby Lowell, who performed all over the west coast and in Hollywood movies, and then was a dancer with the San Francisco Opera Ballet until her marriage. Her mother’s sister, Loretta Lowell, was also a child actress. She performed in the Our Gang comedies and in several Loretta Young movies before becoming one of the first women in the US Air Force. Scott's paternal grandmother was active in local and State politics and served as president of the California State PTA, and her maternal grandmother was a teacher (and stage mother) before working for Monterey County. The place of women in Scott’s family has always been a strong one. Though they married strong men, the women have, for generations, been well educated and encouraged to succeed at whatever they chose to do.
Amanda Scott’s first book was OMAHA CITY ARCHITECTURE, a coffee-table photo essay on the historical architecture of Omaha, written for Landmarks, Inc. under her married name as a Junior League project. Others took the photos; she did the research and wrote the text on an old Smith-Corona portable electric. She sold her first novel, THE FUGITIVE HEIRESS - likewise written on the battered Smith-Corona in 1980. Since then, she has sold many more books, but since the second one she has used a word processor and computer. Twenty-five of her novels are set in the English Regency period (1810-1820). Others are set in 15th-century England and 14th- through 18th-century Scotland, and three are contemporary romances. Many of her titles are currently available at bookstores and online.
HIGHLAND MASTER by Amanda Scott was the first book I've read in the Scottish Knights series. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book so addictive. It starts out with a battle between two clans. In this battle, Sir Finlagh Cameron, also known as Fin of the Battles, promises his dying father to avenge his clan against the Mackintosh clan! While he barely escapes this battle, he finds his way to a beautiful maiden Lady Catriona. She takes him back to her castle to attend to him promising his safety while in her care. Well, of course, Fin is enchanted by the Mackintosh "Wildcat" & now he has to see if he is going to remain faithful to the promise he made his father, or will his loyalty change for this beauty that he has just met. This book promises to hold your interest & it does that indeed. With the charming language of the Scottish & the blend of action & steamy romance you just can't put this book down! I found it to be highly addictive & I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series plus more of Amanda Scott's books! Set aside time to read this book, because once you start it, you won't be able to put the book down until you've finished the very last page.
Honestly?? I am STILL trying to get past my extreme disappointment after reading this. There was no story to this book what so ever. By no story I mean: where was the hero's and heroine's love!? where was their fight to get to one another or what ever the obstacles the usual historical romance, or any romance, novel has in it. All they did was talk, suddenly admit they had feelings for one another, and the ENTIRE time the enemy clan knew who the hero's family was! WTF! That doesn't make a story. What it makes is an awful storyline with no real rising action, mystery, adventure, or climax to it. Also, I'm thinking the author may be either super, super religous or something (not that there's anything wrong with it), but it ruined the lovey dovey feelings between the characters. No, I don't want to read about them jumping in the sack or anything right away, but still...there hadn't really been a whole lot of FEELING between the characters- just them thinking nearly 100% of the time. It wasn't until nearly the end that they shared feelings and a kiss or two, as well as getting married 1st for some 'scandalous' (wasn't really at all-read better) reason and declared their love publicly. I don't think I will ever read another one of Scott's books again. I'm also wondering if she was sheltered as a child...
This is not the most romantic book I've ever read , but it's written so well that it did not matter that much to me . At last a Scottisch romance in which real scottish names ( for persons / clans and area's ) are used .
Highland Master is the first book in the Scottish Knights Trilogy. Fin of the Battles, or Sir Finlagh Mackintosh (Cameron) was the sole survivor of a clan war who made a vow to his dying father on the battlefield for vengeance. On an errand from the Prince of Scotland, he is badly injured and finds himself at the mercy of the Lady Catriona. Very soon Fin comes to find that those who aid him in his healing are the very same clan on which he seeks vengeance. To complicate matters, he is developing a fondness for the family and for Catriona, and political ambition is attempting to take apart the truce of peace in the highlands.
I really liked the story but it is not like any highland romance I have read before. Ms Scott spends a lot of time on the historical details and the politics of the fight for power in some ways dominate the love story. For me this works because it seems very authentic. Instead of two people who are just bam in love you have two people who like each other who are slowly beginning to feel more and fall in love. It is clear that you have two people finding their own way and at times Catriona says to much and at times she is punished for it, as a woman in the 14th century would have been. Fin is likewise learning to open up and find trust, so at times he is a jerk who wants to hold his secrets. I actually read the second book first, Highland Hero so it was nice for me to get a better understanding of the politics at play. I do not think the books is a fast read but it reads well and it kept me interested even though the romance portion moves so slowly

The heroine, Catriona, is beautiful, sexy, intelligent,"a wildcat", has great spirit,is fierce, independent, and about to meet her match. Fin of the Battles and Lady Catriona are two unlikely lovers. Fin is a "Cameron" and Catriona is a "Mackintosh." Both families are rival enemies. When Catriona brings and injured Fin to her grand dad's castle, she is surprised to learn that Fin is an enemy of the family. Even though she now knows this, she still can't seem to put Fin out of her mind. Catriona also learns that her brother Ivor and Fin know each other and happen to be very good friends.
Will the Camerons and Mackintoshes come together and unite with war looming on the horizon, or will the war begin closer to home? Fin and Catriona can only hope that their marriage will be accepted by both families and that peace will come between the families.
I really enjoyed reading “Highland Master.” This is the first book of Amanda Scott's book that I have read. “Highland Master” is sensual delight that was a real joy to read. I love how Amanda wrote in the relationship between Boreas, the wolf dog, and the grey kitten. Their relationship is very similar Catriona and Fin's relationship. I look forward to reading the next book in this wonderful series.
Sir Finlagh Cameron finds himself swearing an oath of revenge after a bloody battle that left him the sole survivor of his clan’s side. When he unexpectedly comes in contact with the daughter of the man he promised to kill, he finds that carrying out that oath might be difficult considering he is falling in love with the daughter of his enemy.
I was absolutely taken with the setting and characters in Highland Master. Catriona aptly nicknamed “wildcat” was a pleasure to get to know. I loved her sass, curious nature, and independence. Not an easy task in a predominantly male household. Love interest Fin is delicious. I’m crushing hard on the Highland hottie. I love a man that can maintain a strong and powerful front, but with a kind heart inside. The love match between him and Catriona was perfection. I’ll admit the political aspects of the plot were confusing. It took me a good 150 pages to really grasp all the players and their goals. Even with my confusion I found this novel completely engaging and difficult to put down. I hope I’ll get the chance to know some of the secondary characters better in future novels.
Lady Catriona Mackintosh is used to having her way and tends to act on impulse. When she finds a wounded man near the river, she immediately bends to help him, heedless of her safety. She doesn't know it at the time, but he is a member of a clan that hers has been feuding with for far too long.
Sir Finlagh Cameron is on the way to find the head of the Mackintosh clan when a wayward arrow fells him. Luckily, Catriona finds him and leads him to safety.
This begins our tale of the two unlikely romantic figures. While I enjoyed the tale of how the two founded and worked out their romance, I found that the politics of the time cast too large of a shadow over their story. It was had to follow who was who with characters having common names, plus official titles and often nicknames as well. I was a third of the way through the book before I realized who most the people other than Cat and Fin were. This took away from my enjoyment of their tale.
I found that Cat was too head strong. Not that that is not a good trait to have, but that she ignored warnings and guidance almost all the time. Didn't seem realistic to me and it got annoying at times.
On the whole and enjoyable story. This is the first book in the Highland Knights series.
This novel got off to a great start, but then it seemed to drag on. I would have preferred a bit more action and drama to keep the novel moving and interesting. I still enjoyed it, and I'll read the next book in the trilogy.
Note to future readers: This is a bit more heavy on the historical/political side than typical historical romance novels. Scott seems to know her stuff though, and it is well-written.
The story opens on a battlefield in Perth, Scotland in 1396. The battle is between the Mackintoshes (Clan Chattan) and the Camerons. Clan Chattan is the victor as only one Cameron is left alive. This survivor, Fin, swears an oath to his dying father, the clan leader, for vengeance against Clan Chattan. One of Clan Chattan's members approached him at this point and they recognized each other and realized they could not fight, so he motioned for Fin to go for the river so he would survive. It wasn't until later that Fin realized that he had sworn an oath going into battle to not pursue vengeance and the one to his father contradicted that.
We find Fin almost 5 years later on the banks of a river in the Highlands, bleeding from a gash to his head. He is discovered by Catriona Mackintosh and her wolf dog protector, Boreas. Fin is in the Highlands on orders from Davy Stewart (Rothesay) - current governer of the Realm and heir to the Scottish throne. He is to convince the Mackintosh to host a meeting between Rothesay and the Lord of the Isles and the Lord of the North. Rothesay hopes to win their favor so that he can retain their votes to keep the governorship and not have it revert back to his uncle, Albany. Albany was not a good ruler of the people, but only wanted to rule for power and wealth. Rothesay was good for the people, but was also a womanizer and would chase anything in a skirt - married or otherwise. At the back of Fin's mind was also the oath of vengeance he had sworn to his father, to kill the leader of Clan Chattan. He knew if he came on this journey for Rothesay, he may have the opportunity to fulfill his oath.
Turns out that Catriona is the granddaughter of the Mackintosh and daughter of the man Fin has sworn to kill. As she and Fin grow closer, he doesn't know what path he is going to take. Catriona is a very strong woman and does not like being told what to do. She appreciates Fin in that he allows her to voice her opinion and seems to really listen to her, and not dismiss her like her brothers and father. Unfortunately, when Rothesay and the two Lords arrive, this gets her and Fin into some hot water.
I really enjoyed this book. It had not only a strong hero in Fin, but also a strong heroine in Catriona. She spoke her mind and acted on her convictions, regardless of what it might cost her. Their relationship developed gradually and wasn't the "see the girl - bed the girl - ok, now let's get to know her" story. The more time they spent together the more I wanted to see them end up together. They were just a really good fit. There were a lot of different conflicts that kept the story line moving - what would Fin do about his oath - how would Catriona deal with Rothesay - what would all the leaders decide to do - how does Fin react upon meeting Cat's brothers and father. I definitely recommend this read.
Highland Master by Amanda Scott Historical Romance – Jan 25th, 2011 4 stars
Amanda Scott's latest, Highland Master, is a wild Scottish historical that captures the treacherous politics of the times and sweeps you back to the past.
In this story, Sir Finlagh Cameron swore to his father that he would avenge his death and seek vengeance against the Clan Chattan's war leader. Years later, Fin has been shot down by an arrow and is saved the impetuous and spirited Lady Catriona. But Fin soon find out her father is the person he was sworn to kill. As an envoy to the Duke of Rothesay, Fin must sort through his feelings for the man he has vowed to kill, try to concentrate on his mission, and tackle his growing desire for Catriona.
Fin didn't have as much angst as I thought he would. The conflict between his vow, his growing respect for Catriona's father, and his love for Catriona resolves naturally and there are no dramatic scenes of vengeance. Fin is a mature warrior who quickly realizes that he had to let go of his past and move forward, which is very refreshing. This is a nice change from heroes who are hot and cold to the heroine (who is innocent) or blustering to compensate for their pain and anger. He seems to realize quickly that his love for Catriona overrides all other vows. Cat is young and headstrong. The best part of the story is how it feels like the highlands. But this is not a light or quick read as politics and intrigue add complexity to the story. The romance between the main characters is rather slow moving but realistic. Readers who like to savor their romance and enjoy main characters who respect each other will enjoy this book.
Politics, intrigue, and a mature hero make for a satisfying Scottish read.

Although I've seen her name on the shelves at my local bookstore, this was actually my first Amanda Scott read. I've been in a highlander state of mind and with a title like "Highland Master" I couldn't resist ;) In the afterward, Ms. Scott tells us the book was based on an actual Scottish legend!
Catriona Mackintosh is a young highland lady, smart and spunky and full of life. She's wandering through the forest one morning and comes across an injured stranger. She comes to his aid and brings him to her home to recover more fully. As it turns out, he is traveling to see her grandfather, The Mackintosh, who happens to be visiting her family's home.
Sir Finlagh Cameron, Fin of the Battles, is a man of honor. As the sole survivor of a bloody Clan battle, he made a vow to his dying father for vengence. He's been sent by the future King of Scotland on an errand, and it just so happens the man he seeks vengence upon is the son of The Mackintosh and Catriona's father.
Highland Master was an agreeable read - I'm going to be honest and say I didn't get all the political maneuverings that were going on in the book, some of it I ended up skimming over. The character-driven part of the story, however, was riveting! Catriona's free spirit and Fin's more conservative one were at odds with each other despite their attraction; oh, Fin spent so much time with his jaw clenched! He was a bit bossy for my taste, but for that time period I suppose that wasn't unusual. Highland Master also had a mysterious friendship between supposed enemies, a scorned suitor, a Duke who spent most of his time being led around by his penis, and a threat to the castle; all of which combined to make a pleasurable read. I will certainly be checking out Ms. Scott's backlist.

Although Amanda Scott is one of the most prolific highland romance writers around, this was the first book of hers that I have read. Besides, the cover is just plain gorgeous and there is something hypnotic about the guys eyes that I just”had” to read this one.
Highland Master is based on Amanda Scott’s interpretation of a real highland legend that occurred between these clans in the 1400’s. The book is heavier on the historical history of the times compared with some historical romance novels and I found it very interesting. There is a lot of political maneuverings going on between the characters and often I found the intricacies of those maneuverings confusion.
The brightest part of the book for me is Catriona Mackintosh. She is free spirited, outgoing and full of life. She is the exact opposite of Finlagh Cameron, the hero of the story. He is reticent, secretive and withdrawn for life. The dynamics of these two characters was intriguing and I wanted more depth to their story. At times, it felt that the characters took a backseat to the political intrigue.
Overall, Highland Master is a good book. The next book in the series, Highland Hero, features Catriona’s brother Ivor and is due out in October 2011. I will be checking it out for sure.
İçine giremedim, her şey havada kaldı.
Was finally able to read this. I really liked the characters and the setting is one of my favorites. It seemed a little long with the historical facts around the middle of the book. I like a romance novel that is heavy on the romance and not on the history. A really good book.
I actually received this around the 9th of Feb. I have had a death in the family and have not been able to read this yet but I can't wait.
i'm really glad i read this book. it's not a book i normally would have read, but now i have a new favorite author. I love the way they talk with that Scottish accent. The romance, so hot and filled with passion. I like the way Cat is out of the bow so to speak, compared to how the woman in that time frame were supposed to be. there's trouble, romance, and mystery. Love it.i would recommend it.
'I finally got back to this book and enjoyed it. It took me sometime to get used to the Scottish phrases being thrown in. All in all it was good. The most disconcerting thing about this time and place was all the names one person could go by thus making it hard took keep track of who is who....
I really wanted to like this book but the political strifes greatly overshadowed the romance to the point where I was struggling to finish the story. I will try another book by this author and see if it was just me and this book that did not mesh...
The heroine is feisty but not really all that active. She is overwhelmed by love. She does help the hero save the good guys. The hero is decently drawn but I was disappointed in the heroine.
