I'll preface this review by saying that I've not been particularly sympathetic to Werewolf in the past. But Werewolf 20th Anniversary Edition has been enough to intrigue me, and soon I'll be playing in a short Werewolf game to see if there's anything for me in it.

This book is very thorough, if not quite as massive as the book in the Mage series. It covers who the Garou are, their mythology, cosmology and society effectively right up front, before going into who an individual Garou is.

The two most interesting chapters, though, are the Spirit World, which explains how the Umbra is laid out and how Werewolves interact with it. The next is The Enemy, which cover Black Spiral Dancers (to more-or-less the same level of detail as the Gaian tribes), Fomori and other enemies. An honorable mention goes to the end of the chapter on Allies for giving spreads for the Lost Tribes and the Changing Breeds (who get more detail in the Changing Breeds book).

Overall, the book is solid, but it does have problems. There are a few layout errors (bolding the wrong text, etc), and it falls apart a bit when crossover is mentioned (my favorite page involves them trying to refer to the Zigg'rauglurr from Mage). And of course, a core problem for Werewolf: the game itself seems to be fairly pro-eugenics, and there's not really any way to separate that out.

A good value, this weighty tome has everything needed for a werewolf game- however, the layout is bad in places with key rule nuggets buried in seemingly unrelated chapters, and the whole system has a DIY vibe to it, with very few pre built monsters.

A near-flawless update to a game that is itself a marvel, W20 moves WtA seamlessly into the 21st century (and, with any luck, into the paws of a new generation of players and Storytellers). The doomed struggle of the Garou was resonant in the 1990s; it is, some might say, downright prophetic today.

My prescious...

Werewolf the Apocalypse has always been my favorite roleplaying game, both to GM and to play. Though i have been a GM in it far more than ive gotten to play the game.

It uses White Wolf's patented d10 system. But more old school, not what Exalted and NWoD has become. Where the target number on the dice varies, rather than the number of successes you require.

The setting itself is set to our time, but an urban fantasy version of it. Where creatures like werewolves, vampires, mages and ghosts roam the world, as well as much much more.

The players play one of the many tribes or changing breed available from play. This corebook actually contains some rules as to starting as that too.

The system is a bit less clunky than the older system and with a greater ease in crossing the various settings.

The setting has an update on the vision of the phoenix, where the 8th sign has been revealed to the Garou, one where a hope of victory blossoms. The tribes are gathering more than before to fight a desperate war against the Wyrm and its minions.

For me this game is nostalgia on speed, it is like seeing an old hero return, and live up to your hopes and dreams all over again, if not shine brighter.

Highly recomended.

Imprescindible.

beautiful book. this game is really what got me hooked on roleplaying games. it did what D&D could not. I started playing Rage in high school, and then bought the Get of Fenris Tribebook before the rule book. I was hooked. Even though I only ever attempted running one Werewolf game, until now that is, it has always been dear to my geeky heart. Then this book came out and the fires of Rage were rekindled. This book is a fantastic collection of rules and monsters and everythimg werewolf. it has more than enough to run multiple chronicles from with out ever having to crack another werewolf book. my props to white wolf and the onyx path on a job well done. I am excited to see where this relaunch takes us all. thank you for your amazing work.
