This was a fun, sexy, over-the-top high seas adventure with pirates, good guys, and even a castaway Island. I forgot how much fun these type of historicals can be to read.

Alexander is a surgeon on board a ship bound for England when the captain asks him to keep a watchful eye on the only other passenger: Daphne, a young but oh-so-naive beauty and heiress. She's a ripe target for wayword men, and far too young for the old surgeon.

Problem is Alexander isn't that old at age 35, he just looks older thanks to a shabby wardrobe and some premature graying hair. But underneath the clothes and hair is the body of a young healthy man with desires for a beautiful woman. And Daphne turns out not to be all that naive, and at 25 she might be the woman for him if only they weren't from two different worlds.

Trouble abounds these two throughout their journey, and it's one adventure after another. The romance starts off as a physical attraction, but soon becomes a much deeper. Alexander knows he must resist her, but when Daphne puts her mind to winning this mans heart he doesn't stand a chance.

My only niggle with the story was at times it felt more of a father & child relationship as these two communicated at such different intellectual levels, but they do find common ground and the relationship does become more equally matched. Daphne's lack of smarts is tested over and over, and at times even I found myself asking if she could really be that clueless. At first they seemed like two of the most mismatched H/h in fiction, with their relationship being so one sided and their intellectual level so far apart. I'm not sure how much I liked her as a heroine, but she did provide some good laughs.

This is an over-the-top story so be prepared for some contrived plot devices and eye rolling dialogue, but if you're like me you really won't mind them. If you like a good swashbuckling high seas romance with a good dose of 'rogering', you'll want to read this one.

I read this one straight after Sea Change, and I'll be honest, everything I said about that one was absolutely true about this one also. I absolutely loved it. I'm not going to just retype everything that I said then, so here's my review.

A couple of things I realized or found that I really liked after reading these two books:

- This author has the most amazing way of writing. Her writing style, word choice, pacing is subtly tailored according to the characters in the book. I honestly don't think I've seen another author do it quite so well in a romance before. Yes, we get the internal dialogue stuff, but this was cleverer than that, and I LOVED it.

- I normally HATE dizzy heroines. Personally, I have a real problem with dizzy people, or people who spend rather a lot of their time worrying about their clothes, or make up, or appearance in general. I just don't, well, get it. Well, this heroine is just like that, but I found myself absolutely loving her. This book demonstrates beautifully how people are multi-faceted, something which you really hardly ever see in a romance, especially one selling for the great price of $5.60. How many people have hidden depths, have skills you never see, except in bizarre circumstances, and yet, how they can still retain the essence of themselves. The heroine appears simple, and she is, but not in the way you expect, and I really, really liked her. She would probably drive me crazy, but I'd still like her.

The hero is also worth mentioning. He's 35 going on 50, and I almost wept with joy that the author made him a greying, taciturn, highly intelligent Scot. The hero and the heroine are just so sublimely suited that you know they are going to have a great marriage and be a great team.

Loved it. 5 stars. You don't have to read Sea Change to appreciate this one.

Castaway Dreams by Darlene Marshall

You know when you're looking for the perfect book to read? Sort of like Goldilocks?

Not too hard, not too soft.....just.....right?

Well, I needed a read that was light, funny, sweet, romantic....not too angsty and intense, not too much graphic, gratuitous sex, but with the perfect amount of emotional satisfaction.

I would have been satisfied with a "B" book. I wasn't asking for much.

But instead, I got a big, whopping A+!!!!!!!

Castaway Dreams is ridiculously adorable and pretty damned close to flawless, in my opinion. It has an excellent storyline, fabulous characters, spot-on humor, plenty of delicious (and tastefully done) sex scenes, lots of wonderful emotional bonding, fun banter and dialogue.

Just read the first paragraph from yesterday's post, and you'll get a nice glimpse into Marshall's latest book. It is beautifully written, and has two fabulous main characters....a grumpy ship's doctor and a bubble-headed beauty who longs to be useful. Oh dear Lordy! This is the way I LOVE my romance novels. With ROMANCE! And nothing is rushed. Their love story is just perfect and believable, and the humor is fantastic. The last book I read by Marshall was different....also good, but not as light-hearted and funny. I like this twist on her voice better. And I sure hope she writes some more like this one. This book made me swoony!

(I also looked up the word trephining in the dictionary. I learned a new word! Just like Daphne!)

Writing: A
Humor: A
Romance: A
Swoon Meter: A

Overall: A

This book is a delicious gem.

Hoping to find my own grumpy doctor (hey! I have my own grumpy doctor! Excellent!),

Really, really liked this. My first from this author and I will be back for more.

I did have a few problems with it. At times it seemed to be moving a bit slow for me but once they washed up on the island it picked up pace. Before then I was entertained but my mind was starting to wander. Luckily I kept on moving on and was happily rewarded for my patience.

I also had a few misgivings towards the heroine. Normally I love a fluffy, empty headed heroine as long as she is in fact a razor sharp shark who can and will go screaming for your jugular. But what you saw was what you got. She really was a silly, useless ball of fluff. At times you were given hints that made you think that maybe you were wrong but nope. I sum it up with her little tidbit about that Marie Antoinette person and that instead of telling the people to eat cake she should have told them to go eat meat and potatoes. Her fluffy fluffyness was starting to rub me the wrong way but once we got to the island we get to know the real Daphne. And she was a lovely, vibrant young woman who was just untested. You could even say that she flourished. As did the good Dr. This was the quintessential fantasy of being marooned on a tropical isle, away from all the cares and strictures and judgements of society. They were just two people working side by side each other to survive. Loved it.

Our long suffering hero was also a delight. I adore his type. Stuffy, brooding and always disapproving. Daphne and Alexander were the perfect mismatched pair. And he proves his love for her by flinging himself through a window like a madman! Haha! Loved it! 4.5 stars

Such a different and fun book. This was a light hearted regency. The characters and setting were a bit different. The hero was a staid and grumpy naval surgeon on his way home to England. The heroine was an heiress who had run away with a fortune hunter who had since died and she was on her way home to England too. Of course they have nothing in common and get cast away together on an island in the Caribbean. Daphne was a wonderful character. She is a little (or maybe a lot) goofy, naive and trusting, always happy and looking for the best in everyone. She didn't know much because she had been sheltered all her life and nothing much had ever been expected of her except that she look pretty. Alexander was a surgeon who had been born a bastard and his life had been shaped by that reality. He was of a serious bent of mind naturally and had spent the last 20 years or so at sea in the company of men so Daphne was totally out of his realm of reality.

When they become stranded together though, they learn to depend on each other and see beneath the surface. Alexander teaches Daphne to take care of herself and she delights in becoming a more useful person. Daphne in return teaches Alexander to smile and accept love into his life.

Wonderfully written. Although it had plenty of elements of farce, I didn't notice any glaring anachronisms or missteps with the historical research.

Really fun and I recommend it and am looking forward to reading other books by this author.

★★★★½ Sooooo tempted to give this a full five stars, just because it was such a delight to read. Loved the characters and the setting. The characters had backgrounds that made them what they were - even the little dog, Pompom. Fun read.

I really didn't think I would like this book, because for me a heroine makes or breaks a book and I am not a fan of 'ditsy' heroines. But the heroine in this book Daphne shows that a person is more than one thing, yes she isn't the most conventionally intelligent person, but she has a big heart and the will to learn and sometimes that is all that matters. Also this book had one of my best liked theme, ship-wrecked together. The hero is a 35 year old surgeon who doesn't like our heiress. One more thing I liked was how the heroine owned her sexuality, and ooh the sexual tension.

OMFG I lovvvvvvvved this book. It is a historical swashbuckling romance on the high seas which sees its MC’s marooned on an island. It has a vapid heiress with more to her than meets the eye featuring and one of my fave tropes—grumpy sunshine. What is not to love? While at times OTT, it is entertaining af. Going to have to read the rest of the series.

It has pirates, which can be a cliche disaster, but the author handled it well. I absolutely loved Alexander. Though Daphne was maddening and superficial af, she came through even though she had a bunch of ninny moments. She sometimes managed to be perceptive and it often seemed she was making many jokes at her own expense.

The dialogue at the end actually made me crack up, which is rare in a book. This book actually makes fun of itself while taking itself seriously. How did the author pull this off? The slow burn romance was everything. This book is just so good. One of my new favorites. Read it!

I really liked this story. It kept me interested all the way through. There was some LOL moments, moments where I shed a tear or two and also some good action. I loved that there was a lot of movement in this book. Also the fact that the H&h were very honest with each other.

The characters were very original and I really liked both the H&h and lets not forget the whittle puppy wuppy POM-POM.

The H&h had plenty of time to get to know each other before they finally hit the sheets. The love scenes where tastefully done but of course I wish there would have been more, hahahahaha.

The ending was very pleasing with the Hero doing something out of his comfort zone to save the woman he loves, It was very sigh worthy.

This is the third book by Darlene Marshall I've read and truly enjoyed. You know I'll be buying more as they are released.

“Alexander, if you feel this way every time you kiss me, it is going to be a long and uncomfortable voyage. There is no going back, not after last night! That sheep has already left the barn!”

“Horse. That horse has left the barn, Daphne.”

She grabbed him by the lapels of his coat. “This is no time to be discussing the habits of livestock! Kiss me!”

So he did.

Daphne Farnham left London to runaway with her lover, after her father hinted he wanted her to marry someone she didn’t like. Once in Jamaica, her lover died before they could get married. Her father promptly sent a maid down to Jamaica to retrieve Daphne and bring her back to London. While on board the Magpie, Daphne meets the ship’s surgeon, Alexander Murray. After spending many years in the Royal Navy, Alexander is ready to go back to London and settle down. What he didn’t expect to find on his journey accross the sea is the most annoying woman he could ever imagine. Not only is Daphne a rich lady (a very rich heiress) but she doesn’t have a lot in the brains department, at least from the outside. She is flighty, and gullible and her biggest concern in life is that the ribbon on her bonnet matches her shoes. She also has Pompom, her beloved dog who comes first in her life above all others.

Just hearing her voice makes the serious, dour Alexander cringe. He looks at her as useless, and hopes the journey goes by quickly. But Alexander’s stress is just starting. First, Daphne’s maid dies, and as Daphne is the only remaining female on ship, the captain puts Alexander in charge of her (much to his dismay). Then a horrible storm comes and they end up shipwrecked on a deserted island – just the two of them…well, and Pompom too.

I think this is the third book I’ve read by Darlene Marshall and I really enjoy her voice. This one is very light, funny and full of adventure. She pairs a very silly heroine to a very serious hero and it is quite amusing watching these two butt heads. Daphne takes one look at Alexander and sees an older, bland, disapproving man that has probably not had one day of fun in his life. Alexander looks at Daphne and sees someone who has exploded in pink frilliness, who only cares about her clothes and her fluffy dog. What I likes is that, their first impressions of each other are pretty accurate. There is no huge transformation of character in this book. Yes, Alexander learns to have some fun, and yes, Daphne learns to be useful. But these two fall for each other (very slowly and believably) and they still stay true to who they are.

It’s so much fun to read an adventure romance, and in this one we are out at sea, shipwrecked and then on a pirate ship and through it all, Alexander and Daphne start to fall for each other. She vexes him so much at the beginning:

“Miss Farnham, you must ask who is on the other side of the door before opening it,” he said sternly. “What if it were one of the sailors standing there, a man with no business being at your cabin?”

“Why would a sailor be rapping at my door, Doctor, unless he had an important message?” Miss Farnham blinked up at him, those long, lush lashes shading her eyes. “Oh dear, do you have indigestion?”

“The pain I am experiencing at the moment has nothing to do with supper, Miss Farnham.”

Daphne may be gullible (okay, very gullible) and a little short on book smarts, but she knows what sex is and she likes it. A lot. This baffles Alexander a bit.

“I worry I am not normal, Dr. Murray. You know how women say they do not like that part of being married? I liked it. I liked it a lot! I liked it in the morning, I liked it late at night, I liked it in the afternoon, after luncheon.” She frowned. “I did not like it during luncheon, that was messy.”

Sweat broke out on Alexander’s brow as he tried hard not to think about Miss Farnham on the luncheon table, her skirts tossed up and honey drizzled across a belly as delectable as Devonshire’s finest cream.

What unfolds is a very sweet romance. I loved how Alexander falls for Daphne. He loves her for who she is. I think she might be too much for some – she is very dense at times and I know I’ve used this word more than once to describe her, but so, so gullible. At some points her behavior got a little old for me. But she is sweet and has a spunk to her all her own. While they are out at sea, they can forget that she isn’t a heiress and he just a mere surgeon. As Alexander emphasizes, back in London everything there is counted in pounds. Daphne at sea or on the deserted island craved for knowledge and new experiences. Daphne in London will be expected to act the perfect lady. I enjoy how it all plays out in the end.

I totally loved this book! I've read all of Darlene Marshall's previous books, but this one takes the cake! It is simply wonderful! Story of stodgy older navy surgeon, Alexander Murray who finds himself shipwrecked and stranded on an island near Bermuda with Miss Daphne Farnham, who he considers to be the most useless and dimwitted society miss he has ever had the unfortunate pleasure of being stuck with. Of course, his opinion changes drastically over time and I loved every word of this endearing romance of how two complete opposites fall in love. It had everything: steamy sex, humor, and an excellent plot line that kept me interested with top notch writing and research to go with it. Very, very clever story, a tour de force for Ms. Marshall! Who would have thought curmudgeonly Dr. Murray would turn out to be such a sexy hero? But of course on second thought, why should I be surprised? He's a Scot with red hair (with a bit of gray thrown in for gravitas). A keeper, though I'm not crazy about the cover...

This is getting 5*s for sheer enjoyment. I could nitpick some things but I was basically smiling the whole time while reading it so there you have it. Other have written the plot summaries better than I but the basics are grumpy, dour, Scottish doctor meets his match in a ditzy, frivolous socialite. Except, not really. Oh, the doctor is grumpy, dour & Scottish and Daphne is a bit of a ditz but they are so much more than that.

If Alexander doesn't appreciate the frivolity, it's because he's had to work for everything all this life. And while some might find Daphne annoying, she's really also a product of her upbringing. Of course she doesn't know how to do anything "useful", she's never had to. Her value in society was in being well dressed and beautiful, and she's very good at those things. Despite her privileged life, Daphne is no snob. In fact, what made her character for me was her inherent kindness. Yes, she's naive and gullible but she also knows why her maid is retiring and selling her dresses so quickly. She says nothing because she knows her maid needs the money and Daphne would have no other way to give it to her. True kindness is such an underrated trait, both in literature and in life, and I always appreciate it when I see it.

I also liked that while Alexander certainly has more life experience and a more intellectual side, Daphne is no shaking virgin. She may be more concerned with hats than with politics but she's also a grown woman who knows when she wants a good rogering. I think that goes a long way to equalize their relationship and Alexander doesn't stand a chance in the face of her desire.

This is my second Darlene Marshall book and I really like the way she writes. They are fun without being overly silly. I'm looking forward to reading The Pirate's Secret Baby since the hero in that one is the swashbuckling, kidnapping, charismatic pirate in this one.

It started off well and I would have given it 4 stars based on my initial reaction to Daphne and Murray. What went wrong? The one-joke humor started wearing thin (blonde bimbo with heart of gold and ridiculous dog paired with brainy curmudgeon) and the story pacing was off. Their interlude as castaways was delightful but once they were rescued, their behavior devolved into silly and slapsticky and it was as if all the lovely moments of communication and bonding on the island never happened.

Humor is very subjective and while I found the book pleasantly funny that wasn't enough to sustain my interest. I kept waiting for a heart-clutching, deep moment that would make me believe in their romance. Came close a few times but no cigar.

I'm no historical purist but even I noticed quite a bit of anachronistic language.

The best parts of this novel are the chapters about the time when Daphne and Alexander are shipwrecked on an uninhabited island in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean—how they find food and shelter, how they find strength and value in each other, how their total commitment/passionate love grows into a life-changing force that neither can deny. However, unfortunately, Daphne is often just too silly. Comedic, of course, but also annoying.

This wasn't the perfect read; it was cringe and slow at points, Daphne was an airhead and the ending few chapters were predictable, rushed and (again) cringe. However, I did enjoy myself up until they were rescued from the island, and that was a good chunk of the book, so I'd say overall Castaway Dreams was a decent read.

DARLENEEEEEE
She did it. I love men again. Love is real.

A real review: 4.5/5
I adored this book and it's one of my all time favorite reads now. The ONLY reason I docked a half point was because the characterization of Daphne as a ditz seemed somewhat inconsistent. I hardly noticed though, I adored the rest of it so thoroughly.

The LI, Alexander, is TOP TIER. I loved him because he felt like a real person for his flaws and details and just personality. He is the grown up
love we want once we move on from the edgy bad boys in YA+NA fiction. The FMC Daphne was great fun to read, and didn't make me start chewing on the bars of my enclosure for being ~quirky~ and ditzy. Thank you god and Darlene.

The pacing was perfect; it had a steadily moving plot without being "fast-paced" and I felt like I was savoring every chapter as I read, without feeling bogged down. It also was perfect for the slow burn romance to build in a way that felt natural. The way I was giggling and kicking my feet as an adult was insane. On that note--hawt. I won't elaborate, except to say we were served a nice helping of the good stuff.

I could go on for forever about how much I love this book, but you should just read it. It perfectly balances the tone between heartfelt, absurd, and just plain horny, body and soul. Which I say with so much love and respect--it's just the kind of book that makes you love men again. All while being the most wonderfully over-the-top campy-ness you've ever read.

You mean you misjudged her intellectual capacity? Shocking! Sigh….
In our collection of contacts, we all know at least one gentleman who is elitist, narcissistic, and who demeans women. We probably also know a female friend (or perhaps one’s self) who has fallen for said individual, and who believes she can change him. Actual results may vary, but reality is generally disappointing, and that is why we read fantasy. Thus this tale is enjoyable, but not without its flaws.
I enjoyed the humour, but I honestly didn’t like the role of Captain St. Armand. It seemed comparatively nonsensical. I preferred said character’s portrayal in Sea Change and Pirate’s Secret Baby.

When I first picked this up, I was so hoping for a “Blue Lagoon” plot, and that’s mostly what I got… Up until the rescue. Then it became more “Castaway” and seemed to almost detract from the growth they made on the island. I hate that sort of rubber band romance, I like a more steady progression. The ending was very cheesily wrapped up in about 12 pages that I could’ve done without. And so many anachronisms often took me out of the story.

The Captain was cringe and therefore the reason I will not continue the series.

Shoutout to this one random person on reddit who mentioned this book in passing. It mentioned a dog in the premise so of course I had to pick it up. I wasn't expecting much but I ended up loving this so much! Darlene wrote Daphne's character so well. She was such a treat to read and I have come to the conclusion that I would die for her.

I was rooting for her and Alex the entire time and I just wish the story could've been a little shorter (the middle bit was a little too dragged out).

I will be frank, my mission this year was to reread my favorites books than to discover new ones.

Soooooo thats why this was my FIRST book of 2025 to go to the “favorite” shelf.

It was long, but it was funny, swoony and lovely.

I learned many words reading this book, truly haha not jk

I don’t know why the rating isn’t higher.
I don’t know why authors don’t invest in survival themes!!!

🥰: historical, survival, pirates, kidnapping, grumpy and rational mmc, cute fmc.

✨ 5 stars + fav!
