Juice fasting can help to increase energy and improve mental alertness, lose weight, heal chronic ailments without drugs, and maintain stamina with no hunger. This book features quick and delicious juice recipes for fasting at home or work and is suitable for those with a busy lifestyle.
I was in a natural health store about ten years ago trying to figure out why my attempts at fasting never worked and lucky for me I came across this book. Juice Fasting and Detoxification is my single favorite book about fasting/detoxification using fruit/vegetable juice. Meyerowitz takes you through the steps of what fasting is, how to begin, choices in juice/liquid fasting, what to expect during a fast and how to properly end a fast. This book is very easy to read, I love the charts and the pictures. If you are familiar with fasting you can skip around (thank goodness for an index) to the parts that you need to refresh your memory or if you are new to fasting it is not difficult to read the book straight through and you will definitely be well informed by the end. The other nice thing about this book is that he provides lots of alternatives. If you are looking for a book with just recipes for a fast this is not it, instead he tells you what different fruits and vegetables do for the body during a fast and gives a few suggested recipes. I also like that he does not force the idea of raw food diets or threatens the reader about disease and disaster. As always if you are taking medication or have medical conditions I would hope that you would seek out the advice of an alternative health practitioner. For people who just want to feel better and maybe loose a few pounds in the process this is a great introduction to fasting with lots of options to customize your fast to your needs.
I really enjoyed watching the movie "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" and after became quite interested in broadening my knowledge about juice fasting. This book was very informative, an easy read, and gave a review of all the basic principles pf fasting. It offers a great discussion of what fasting is, the benefits of fasting, and the different types of fasts. It offers descriptions of how to begin, how long to continue and how to come off a fast. This book is also a great tool to learn how the body heals itself and detoxifies, what to expect as this occurs and what can be done to help the body during the cleansing process. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about juice fasting and what to do to start my own juice fast!
It's not just about juice fasting. The author teaches how to water fast. Yes, he warns several times about attempting long fasts on your own. He even briefly mentions breathatarianism. Personally, I just read the book for the juice fasting and recipes. There was only one page with actual recipes though. Other than that, there are only lists of vegetable combinations and few fruit combinations. He doesn't care for the mixing of vegetables and fruits in one meal, it seems.
I learned about what is best consumed and why (it also depends on the type of fast and length). He is a believer in spirulina, wheatgrass powder, and nutritional yeast--in case anyone wondered. I like the teas made from certain herbs and spices. Caffeine is not allowed, of course. Random recipes can be found in the book like broth, nut milk, and rice water. The author is in depth enough for me, but I wished that all the recipes could have been placed in one area.
Several pages at the end of the book give an overview, which helps in not having to look through the whole book (unless it's something specific, of course). So will I fast? Maybe. I have been juicing every morning for a week now, but I am also eating regular meals (mostly healthy, anyway). I ponder the idea of a water fast one day a week. We'll see. I do feel inspired.
Amazing intro to fasting. Very quick and easy read. Only 4 stars because there’s no mention of how fasting might need to be different for women vs men.
I thought this book was a very good introduction to Juicing and the health benefits of Juicing. However I would not call it fasting as some of the recommended protocol will take you out of the fasting state. It is still a great resource for knowing which veggies and fruits will help to detox your body and it recommends other things you can do to improve your health. I have been following the protocol for a week now trying to rid myself of Cedar Fever, which is caused by the Cedar (Juniper) trees of central Texas. I feel better, but the allergies are not as relieved as when I water fast. Water fasting is just too severe for me, and I can't function as a wife and mom while in a water fasting state. So, this is a nice compromise. Your body still gets enough calories, and tons of nutrients to detox and heal. Even if you are not interested in fasting, this is a good introduction to juicing in general. Now..off to drink my pineapple cilantro juice!
This isn't really a recipe book so don't buy it I'd that's what your looking for. It's more about how juice fasting & other sorts of fasting can help your body.
Honestly I was grossed out by the suggestions that I get professional enemas & colon massages (okay WHAT are those? Never mind. Don't tell me) but if that sounds interesting to you, get this book.
For a few years I experimented with fasting, raw diet, vegan and vegetarian diets, and a few others. Most of the juice recipes in this book are pretty tasty and when I want a fruit/veggie treat there are a few I still make from time to time. The information is mostly bunk, pseudoscience, and gobbledygook.
Probably one of the best handbooks on (juice) fasting out there. Written in very readable and encouraging style it requires all you need to know about the subject. Don't expect hard academic theory though, this is a practical book meant for real-life application. Scientific explanations are to be found elsewhere.
I read this in prep for my juice detox. He talks about a LOT more serious detoxes and fasts. Some you only drink water! It was a quick read, a little interesting, but also a little eating disorderish. I don't think this is probably the best book out there for this kinda stuff.
