This was a good finale to the series.
I felt too much time was spent recounting past events and developing new characters. At the hallway point I was wondering how in the world all the story lines were going to be cleared up. Well, they aren’t.
We still don’t know exactly who Rachael and Rueben are. In the grand scheme, it doesn’t matter. Dire McCain is also left as a mystery to his lineage. The only problem I had with him is, he is supposed to be the most powerful and feared man in the world since he is the vessel for the Dark Messiah-Lameth Yet, his character doesn’t play the part. Odd.
What we do know is Flavia gets her revenge, Phantomas’ research helps expose who the Red Death is and how to defeat him. Madeleine Giovanni avenges her father’s death when she challenges Don Caravelli. Alicia Varney exposes Melinda Galbraith and the force behind her
It was interesting to see how the Red Death had the main leaders in Europe and the United States all in a meeting to discuss who and what he was and how to defeat him. Think, St. Valentines Massacre or the Godfather part one, where all the opposition is eliminated in one large stroke. At least, that’s his plan. What he doesn’t realize is he is a pawn in his own game.
I can’t forget the great scene in Paris at Café de la Paix. Don Caravelli has called all his sub-bosses together and put on bounty on Dire, Madeleine and Alicia if she gets in the way. When the mob shows up, it’s the Fourth of July in Paris. Lot of good action.
Did find some more grammatical issues, but they were only minor speed bumps. Way too many name tags for my taste especially when only two people are speaking.
Who will like this? As I understand, the books are based off a game from the late eighties, early nineties. If you’re a Dungeon and Dragon fan, this series will be a true treat. Also, if you’re looking for an interesting, well-structured vampire tale, you’ll enjoy this one.
