This is a book of cliches. The only unique idea in the book is the definition of zombies. I would have given this book a 2 star rating if not for the unique way the author portrayed zombies. The rest of the book is predictable with no original ideas or plots. If you are looking for something new or challenging look elsewhere.
Characters - The characters are flat with no memorable aspects. The character development is predictable. All of the characters are a cliche. Tough female, mean cop, evil voodoo, handsome powerful vampire, etc. I would have liked at least one character who was original.
Story - Predictable, unimaginative and not very well written. About the only thing I liked in the entire book was the way that author explained zombies and how zombies acted. It was not a new idea (I have seen it before) but it is a less used variety of zombie. The rest of the book was so predictable that I knew what most of the characters would do before it happened.
Overall - I would not recommend this book unless you like cliches. If you don't mind a predictable story and flat characters then you may enjoy this. Others who want something new, something exciting with memorable characters will have a hard time finishing this book (like I did).
It was a good storyline but some of the repetition got annoying. Too much of the same argument with the vampire...even using the same words. Instead of constantly saying "we need to talk," talk already and move on with the story.
In my review of Laurelle K. Hamilton’s first book of the Anita Blake series: Guilty Pleasures, I mentioned that I had read this particular book about three years ago and couldn’t really remember the relationship between Jean Claude and Anita Blake (the main characters) because I had been in such grips of fear from the rest of the novel that the “love story” in the background didn’t really hit me.. But that first book (Guilty Pleasures) was so good I decided to catch up. The cliffhanger left about what happens between the Vampire Executioner and The Master Vampire of the city who is hot after her, body and soul, was too much of a scorcher to leave be. So I spend a week re-reading The Laughing Corpse and boy am I glad I did. I have been telling people about this book for as long as I have remember having read it. It not only has its own original storyline and gripping entertainment but she also ups the level on the shock and chemistry factors. I think everyone feels safe with things that are tangible….like vampires in fiction. As readers we expect them. But when you are dealing with voodoo and the grandma of soccer and the possibility of things you cannot see, taking you out….now that’s just something else. In fact this whole business of zombies and voodoo in this book hit just too close to home. I remember attending uncle’s funeral when I was around 16 years old and the wife (the widower) was suspected of having had a hand in witching him to death. Some speculated that the real person was stuck in a wardrobe in the dark somewhere and he was now her zombie slave. All very melodramatic and unbelievable. I cannot tell you just what respectable went on there for that two weeks leading to the wedding. Yes in Africa we take at least two weeks of holding “wakes” for the dead before burying them. Only God knows how that tradition started but I can tell you now, if you made it shorter i’m sure someone would speculate that you had not only done away with the deceased with a visit via a loaf of bread at 12AM some midnight but that you also cannot wait to get rid of them. I digress…. So you see why I found this book, even three years later, so eerily awesome. It feels real, the folklore, legends and even voodoo (which is not legend) feels real. Frighteining at times when you imagine that there are living being’s who practice this stuff for a living. No I’m not referring to the online or pamphlet Sangoma/whitchdoctor who can enlarge your genitals or bring you love with a few chinese potions. I am amazed by the amount of research this writer must do. This is not sn author making mention of this things to fill gaps on her novel or to just pass having it called a Zombie novel. She knows her stuff, and she knows her necromancy. Oh and yes….before I forget again, I did find happiness in the end between the vampire and the executioner. Although it only left me panting even more for the next book: Circus of the Damned.
My friend Becky started me on this series and I am hooked. If you like the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris then you will love this series of books by Laurell Hamilton.
I read the first book Guilty Pleasures and right away couldn't wait to start the second book. The character Anita Blake is a single woman who is a vampire hunter and assist the police in cases that involve the supernatural, Vampires, Ghouls, zombies, and voodoo priestess so far. It starts out that she goes to see a client Harold Gaynor about raising a 300 year old zombie. It would require a human sacrifice to raise a zombie that old. Anita refuses and Mr Gaynor sends his goons to persuade her. The master Vampire Jean-Claude is trying to turn Anita into his human servant/lover. The voodoo priestess Dominga Salvador is trying to get Anita to join her in the dark practices of voodoo and human sacrifices. The entire time she is trying to sole the murders happening in the city of St. Louis which she believes are being committed by a Zombie. This is a must read. I would read the first one Guilty Pleasures first you don't have to but it would help to know the characters a little better.
Genre: Fantasy/ Paranormal Author: Laurell K Hamilton Book: The Laughing Corpse (#2) My Star Rating: 4 out of 5 Would I re-read this book? Yes
This is the second book of the Anita Blake series. I liked this book better than book 1. At the beginning it tells you who she is and what she does. (In book 1 she really doesn’t tell you and have to read a little into the book to get the info)
This book did make me tear up just a little bit. I like the way that Jean Claude and Anita dance around each other. Great chemistry between the two.
In this book, Mr. Gaynor wants Anita to raise a very old body. But to do this it is not the normal killing a chicken to raise a zombie. No you would have to kill the white hornless goat. (Killing a human)
So not only is she having trouble with Gaynor taking no for an answer, Anita meets the a voodoo queen and she is not taking it very well at all that Anita doesn’t want to join in on her zombie raising plans.
More Vampires, Shifters, Police, Zombies, and the like. Anita has a very full life to start, and it only gets fuller. Her day job gets crazy with folks wanting her to raise a zombie older than anyone else can do. Can she do it? Does she do it? Will she take the amount offered to raise the zombie? What will it cost her if she does? How will her boss Bert feel if she doesn't do it? Read it and find out!
This is actually my favorite book of the series (I have only read through Narcissus in Chains so far), as it gets right into the awesome stuff that I love about LKH's writing! The character work was solid, the story was awesome and easy to follow. And without giving spoilers, the power at the end was enough to make me want to read it again! Just fantastic!
I think it is a perfect book to read if you want a pause from learning for exams...that's my case. I enjoyed a lot Anita's personality; she reminded me constantly of Debra Morgan from Dexter. I didn't liked so much the final, but it was a goodread after all.
Loved this book. Anita rocks! I listened to this book on audiobook and it was fast paced and entertaining. the reader was really good so i hope she reads for all the books in this series.
Boy.... I'd forgotten how much I liked these earlier Anita Blake stories, and was surprised at how far "off-story" the later books have gotten. I much prefer the earlier stories.
This is the second book in this series and I really enjoyed it. It fits the Anita Blake persona perfectly. I love how her job as an animator takes her to wonderful heights with lots of action.
