Rivers of London Graphic Novels #10

Rivers Of London: Deadly Ever After

Rate this book
CSI meets Harry Potter in this graphic novel from Ben Aaronovitch - writer of the bestselling Rivers of London supernatural police procedural crime novel series, Andrew Cartmel author of The Vinyl Detective and Celeste Bronfman.

Illustrations from a mysterious book of fairy tales drawn in the late 1800s are coming to life in the 21st Century and causing havoc. The illustrations were originally painted by a Victorian artist called Jeter Day who disappeared one night in an enchanted forest when he was spirited away by tree nymphs never to be seen again…

Now, with the enchantment accidentally broken by Olympia and Chelsea, daughters of the river goddess Mama Thames, Jeter, twisted by his time spent with the nymphs, has returned to our world bitter and resentful. It is a world he neither recognises nor likes. All he wants is his life returned to him and woe betide any man who stands in his way.

With Peter and Nightingale busy on another case, it falls to sisters Olympia and Chelsea with the help of the Foxes to stop Jeter and save the day.

4.5 ⭐️ for this spectacular fairytale inspired graphic novel. Chelsea & Olympia solve a mystery with a little help from their magical family. No Toby, the dog in this one, which made me a little sad. This graphic novel series continues to fill me full of Aaronovitch magic.

Another in expanding Rivers of London world of graphic novels. As the main protagonists are minor side characters, Peter, Nightingale only make a token appearance in this story and there is nothing at all of my favorite character Toby the Dog.
The art in these books has progressively improved and the style has really grown on me, looking forward to the next one although I would like to see a more mainstream story rather than side characters.

Here is the latest in the Rivers of London graphic novel series - which I have to say have been thoroughly enjoying. I think what makes it even more fun is that it is linked to the novels- in fact they share the same time line and sequence although they are just as suited to being standalone

This book without spoilers focuses on the lesser developed characters - going so far as intentionally sidelining the main protagonists. Don't get me wrong they are there and the same pace and action you would expect too - rather after so many books (both formats) you have a huge cast to draw from and I think its more fun at times focusing elsewhere.

True the story is shorter both in page count and development but its still great fun and I always wonder if one format is used to push the story along in the other - so the question is what will we be greeted with in the next instalment.

I received a copy from Titan Books through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When a series of fairytale inspired illustrations painted in the late 1800s start coming to life, all hell breaks loose. The longer Olympia and Chelsea look into the different people affected, the more they realize it’s all connected to a certain tree in the forest. Unfortunately for them, that tree is the same one that the pair revealed by breaking the enchantment that once kept it hidden and safely tucked away!

We follow Olympia and Chelsea, the twin daughters of Mama Thames, as they accidentally push over the first domino leading to a series of crazy events that slowly mimic the illustrations of an artist from the late 1800s. It was fun to watch these two characters accidentally cause some shenanigans because they weren’t thinking about the possible consequences of their actions. It turns out that revealing a tree hidden by magic, and breaking any possible boundaries that was part of that, took them on a major learning curve.

All in all, I really enjoyed the characters, the story, and the artwork. Every once in a while, I accidentally start a series with a random book that is not the series opener. I can tell you that this book stands up very well on its own because I didn’t realize it wasn’t the first in a series until it mentioned that a fan favorite was about to appear. I took a look and discovered it’s actually the tenth installment in the series! I liked the story a lot, so I’m checking out the rest of the series and plan on eventually rereading this installment in context since there’s several books that came before it.

Nice to see Olympia and Chelsea at the forefront of this story! A lot of fun, just wish it had been longer.

Teenaged river goddesses Chelsea and Olympia decide to investigate when people who attended the same BBQ as them start reenacting characters and moments from fairy tales. They discover everything is tied back to a beautifully illustrated fairy tale book that actually has its origins in late 1890s London.

The sisters jump in trying to solve the problem without necessarily thinking of the ramifications of their choices, and end up needing a little bit of help from Abigail and some help from the descendant of an artist who disappeared in late 1890s London.

Chelsea and Olympia have always been pretty much fun-loving and irresponsible, and they start out that way, but seem to have gained a little bit of responsibility by the end of this story.

The Rivers of London comics do a great job of further fleshing out the Aaronovitch-created magical, contemporary London and side characters that I’ve come to love over the terrific novel series.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Titan Books for this ARC in exchange for my review.

I haven't read any of the Rivers of London graphic novels but have had some vague interest in them. So, when I saw this on Netgalley I thought fck it, let's request it. And then I actually got it! It does say you can read them on their own, so like a good girl I immediately downloaded and read it. And I enjoyed it just fine? I don't care too much for the main characters, which was a given based on my opinions of the goddesses in the main series. But there were foxes and fairy tales, so that made up for a lot of it. The art style was okay, nothing special but nothing horrible either. The plot was fun but a bit too simple for my liking and could have done with another chapter to slow things down a little bit and have the space to create some more intrigue. But it was a decent way to spend an hour waiting for my migraine meds to kick in, and I will look into picking up some of the previous graphic novels.

I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley.

I did not realize this was book 10 in the series when I first requested it and picked it up. I thought it was book 1 - as such my rating and review are affected by not having experienced the character development & plot other readers of the series have experienced. I will talk specifically about this book, and try not to let the lack of context colour my review.

The concept was pretty fun, I loved the twists on all the fairy tales coming to life. The villain’s motivations felt very forced, & unrealistic, which was a bit distracting. Overall, this was a fun mix of fantasy, mystery, & humour.

Hello! While browsing on NetGalley I was struck by the graphic novel “Rivers of London: Deadly Ever After”.
Only by reading it I have discovered that it is the tenth volume of a Mystery Urban Fantasy series that consists of novels and graphic novels.
The story was created and written by Ben Aaronovitch in collaboration with Celeste Bronfman. The graphic part was done by José María Beroy, David Cabeza, Jordi Escuin Llorach, and Jim Campbell.
Published by Titan Books, the paperback will be released on January 3rd, 2023.
Thank you NetGalley and Titan Books for the chance of reading it in exchange for an honest review.

If you're intrigued by the plot but scared by the length of the series, fear not. The characters are recurring, but the stories are standalone. In fact, I had no trouble understanding the dynamics between the characters, even though I didn't know them.

The protagonists of this tenth story are Chelsea and Olympia, demi-goddesses, daughters of the goddess of the Thames Beverly. They are twins, very close, troublemakers and a little spoiled.
While camping in the woods, they uncover a berry tree that has been hidden by magic for centuries.
Little could they know that the simple gesture would cause a lot of troubles.
Fairytales come true because of a mysterious picture book, but who is behind the events?
With the detectives busy, it's up to the twins to solve the case and save London.

The graphic novel can be read really fast, it's about a hundred pages and the story is interesting.
As I said, it can easily be read as a standalone, although - it goes without saying - that knowing the characters and the context would certainly have made reading it very different.
The idea behind it is what conquered me - fairytales that come to life and "take possession" of ordinary people. The presence of fairytales -really- is secondary.
I think this graphic novel is more of a compendium to give more space to the twins, make them grow in some way and make them understand what consequences have using magic in a reckless way.
The mystery component is very tenuous, since the detectives are busy with another case and the mystery is easy to guess. After all, I repeat, I think it is a way to give the twins something to do, and they throw themselves into this adventure.

I really liked the fairytale puns of the titles and the presentations of the context, consistent with the whole story.
The illustrations are really beautiful; I loved the colors and the lines of the drawing. They feel very natural and magical at the same time.

It's a very nice story, but nothing phantasmagorical.
Perfect if you want to read something magical, but not too demanding. Furthermore, it could convince you to read series! It looks really interesting!

Apparently Ben Aaronovitch (who is still listed as author here) has completely sourced out the comics by now.
The story and the art are okay, but no more than that, and deal with two minor - and not particularly interesting (or likeable) - side characters, with the "main cast" just appearing in cameo.
A very quick read I can not imagine following month by month in single issue format.

Fun story of ancillary river spirit twins and fairy tales within tales loose in London. Good story, solid art, and nice to see more characters gain depth to pull them out of the background (& amusing to see Peter & Nightengale & Bev in cameos and comedy).

This is nothing more than Fables meets The Forgotten Garden but nowhere near as good as either and desperately lacking Aaronovitch’s signature voice. As for the drawings, has the illustrator ever actually seen a real female breast before because going by this I’d say no.

(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through Edelweiss. Content warning for graphic violence.)

Ben Aaronovitch's RIVERS OF LONDON series has been languishing somewhere in the middle of my massive TBR pile for what seems like ages now - so, when I spotted this graphic novel on Edelweiss, I figured that delving in via the comics would be a solid life hack. Problem is, I didn't realize that DEADLY EVER AFTER was already the tenth graphic novel in the series - or that the comics feature original stories rather than being faithful adaptations of the novels, like I'd assumed.

Lucky for me, DEADLY EVER AFTER is a standalone story featuring Chelsea and Olympia, two of Mama Thames's daughters and goddesses of the Westbourne river and Counter's Creek, respectively. When the sisters are invited to a cookout in the forest, things go sideways, FAST. They unthinkingly reveal a glamoured mulberry bush to a mere mortal - and, in so doing, trigger a series of mysterious events: fairy tales are coming to life, each reeancted upon the body of a different party-goer from that fateful night. And these aren't the Disney-fied versions either, with happy endings. With Peter, Nightingale, and Abigail off on a more important case, can Chelsea and Olympia get to the bottom of this mystery - and set their mistake right?

DEADLY EVER AFTER is a solid 3.5 stars.* The artwork is easily its strongest feature (gorgeous!), while the storytelling is engaging enough (even if the twists are a little easily anticipated). Longtime fans will likely be disappointed that the MCs don't make much of an appearance, but I liked Chelsea and Olympia - they gave the local (I'm assuming ancient) gods from the series a modern spin, in the vein of LORE OLYMPUS.

* Rounded down to 3 stars because of all the anti-vegan jokes. Well, okay, not all of them - having the vegan character turn into the Big Bad Wolf and rip a woman's throat out did make for an amusing one-liner. But having him run a Meat Meat Meat stand after the spell is broken? Despite his earlier ethical vegan stance? Talk about low-hanging fruit. Thanks, but I'll pass.

“The trick is to always aim positive, especially when you’re not.”

Thank you to Net Galley and the Publisher for my advanced readers copy of Rivers of London: Deadly Ever After.

Olympia and Chelsea have messed up, big time. They accidently released a man whose sense of morality has been wrapped from being stuck in a magic tree with the nymphs. This man, Jester, wants his life back before he was trapped in the tree. But doing so means using magic harmfully to get what he wants. Can the sisters, Olympia and Chelsea, stop Jester and save the world? Or is it too late for them all?

Overall I liked this book. I would give it a four out of five stars. I thought the beginning was slow and I didn’t really like Olympia and Chelsea. I will admit the sisters did grow on me a little bit throughout the story. I liked their flawed personalities and how they cared for one another. They were also really funny, this book had me laughing about the situations these girls put themselves in. But they did always know when to ask for help.
If you like fantasy, mystery, and fairy tales definitely check this book out!

First I have to say this is the 10th volume in a series of graphic novels and I hadn’t read the previous 9.
It’s stated that you can read them individually, but I found it would be better to read the other volumes as well. I did understand what was going on for the most part (except for some specific terms like “Folly” which seemed to be some kind of magic school?), but I think you’d be more familiar with the characters and the world, which would’ve made me more invested in the story.

I liked the premise and I liked the fairytale-part of this story, but the plot was quite simple in my opinion. Problems were easily fixed and I didn’t really care about any of the characters, except for the foxes.
The artstyle was quite nice.
It was also quite humorous. There were some jokes I laughed out loud with.

It did spark my interest to read the other volumes though, as the idea behind this world is quite intriguing.

Having not read any of the previous books in this series I was worried this would be difficult to follow. However the summary sounded so interesting that I requested it anyway.

Not knowing any of the characters or previous structure going in didn't really bring down my enjoyment of this one. I thought the overall plot was really cool and I loved the idea of the twisted fairy tales coming to life. I think the two main characters are funny and enjoyable. Despite this being a little short compared to other graphic novels I've read before I felt it did a fantastic job of encompassing the story it was telling from start to finish. I didnt feel confused having only read this one and I think others would easily be able to pick it up and enjoy it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Titan Comics for providing me with an ARC of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a huge fan of this series, and it was cool to see it presented in graphic novel format. I enjoyed seeing the depictions of the characters, and I especially enjoyed the fact that this story focused more on characters other than Peter and Nightingale, even though I do love them and their stories.

In this story, we get to know Olympia and Chelsea, Beverly's sisters, a lot better. They're pulled into a magical situation and since Peter and Nightingale are currently occupied, they have to handle it on their own. I liked the incorporation of fairy tales into the plot, and while this was a quick read, it kept me intrigued and engaged from start to finish. I also loved seeing some of my favorite characters pop up, like Beverly, the twins, Abigail, and the foxes.

This was a fun read, and it doesn't require too much understanding of the series to get into, even if it isn't necessarily a standalone.

Ok so I was not aware this was book 10. This is my first exposure to the Rivers of London series and I did not do my research first. That is what I get for saying "Ohh pretty cover I need" and requesting before actually reading anything about it.

The scans were pretty bad, so the art was blurry. I tried reading it on my Chromebook and the art was just too blurry to give a fair review to. The letters were very well done, they didn't interfere with the art and were easy to read. The story was ok. Probably would be better if I knew anything about it.

So 3 stars for now. I am intrigued enough that I will be looking for book 1.

I’m a huge fan of the Rivers of London books. I’ve read all of them and adore all the characters. It was great to see them in graphic novel format and this one has the great elements of the main set of books; the humour, the wit, the magic.

I always find graphic novels a little hard to read though, for me they always seem a little disjointed and messy in terms of reading the development of the plot but I think that’s a fault with me!

I loved that this had Abigail and the foxes. Seriously some of my favourite characters. And the main story set throughout this novel was a great one and well thought out. Fairytales coming to life? Frogs turning into princes? Colour me intrigued!

It’s great for those who know the series and love graphic novels. I’ll keep trying to get into reading them as I’m a normal book reading fan so graphic novels are a different way of reading for me!

Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

I have read numerous books within the River of London series and this Graphic novel is what I want more of. THis is perfect for those who want an easy read within the Rivers of London series. The plot follows the similar style that Aaronovitch uses and lets just say it is perfect. I want to read more from the twins solving crime. The illustrations are brilliant too. I would thoroughly recommend to people who like things like Constantine but do not want as much gore but as much mysticism as is in the Sandman comics.

I love the rivers of London books. These graphic novels a little pockets of joy in between longer novels. I love the humour, the sassy characters and the detailed illustrations. Ben Aaronovitch has created this fabulous world and these graphic novels really bring it to life. I love the fact that the images I had of the characters after reading the novels matches the images drawn in these book.
