Thanks to Edelweiss for the digital review copy.

What a fun, quick read and this is one that kids are going to love! It's food to the rescue in more ways than one. When I read something like this, I'm amazed at the creativity - both the actual drawings themselves of course which are bright, fun and oh so eye catching, but also the idea itself! It's a fun early graphic novel about a boy who missed breakfast and the heroes that come to rescue him and how they do it. And there is even depth to this in that we learn about the strict rules in the classroom that the teacher established and which prevent kids from eating, but in end we learn about why. I think this really shows kids that even when they may not agree and things make sense to them that there can be reasons (good or bad). We can all learn and grow! So so much fun with these heroic foodie characters!

I mean, could a book be more perfect for kids? My 4 and 7 year old loved this graphic novel. We giggled together at every chapter. Who wouldn’t enjoy a superhero bean named Mr Toots?

The Hunger Heroes get an urgent call: a student at the elementary school has skipped breakfast and now he won't be able to concentrate to pass his math test. Hunger Heroes to the rescue! They jump into their Hovercraft (a giant flying taco, of course) and zoom to Pinchkid (hilarious!) Elementary School.

The Hunger Heroes are: a bean named Mr. Toots (haha!), A Chip Ninja, Tammy the Tomato and Leonard the wedge of cheddar cheese. First, they'll have to find a way into the school and navigate through a boisterous gym class where dodge balls threaten to smash them, they duck, dash, dart and dodge then they'll have to figure out the maze of hallways to find hungry Jason in Mrs. Sternbladder's (silliness, tee-hee) classroom where there are RULES against any type of food, or even more horrifying, SNACKS!

How will the heroes help Jason and escape the peril of Mrs. Sternbladder? Only the brain of Jarrett Lerner could dream up this silly, funny, wacky and entertaining jaunt into a school to save a student in the nick of time to ace his math test.

The advance reader copy has a book one on the spine, so I'm sure there's more Hunger Heroes in our near future. Fun reading for fans of easy readers, those who are reluctant readers and fans of graphic novels.

Highly recommended grades 2-6.

I read this book to my 3rd through 6th grade special education students. This is hands down their favorite book we read throughout the school year. It had EVERYTHING that students love about books. The characters were all fun and funny. The story was interesting, relatable, and funny. The pictures were fantastic. The book was not difficult to read or understand. The plot moved fast.

We did not read this in one sitting. I read 2 or 2 and 1/2 chapters every session. The students loved reading for the characters. Students loved all of the characters. They were all able to find a character that they wanted to read for. Even students that were not reading out loud for a character were engaged. For teachers out there, after each read aloud, I would ask my students to write about what they read and to make a prediction. Even my most reluctant writers had something to say. They had never taken to a book the way they did The Hunger Heroes.

The story is about a boy who doesn't eat breakfast in the morning. He has a math test coming up in the day and he cannot think because he is hungry. His teacher doesn't allow eating in her classroom. The Hunger Heroes receive the alert that someone is hungry and they move into action. What ensues is a fun story with a lot of random, crazy, and hilarious things.

What makes the experience even better is Jarrett Lerner's website. He has how to draw the character pages that you can print. I printed them and had my students draw their favorite character. They added them to a book review and we had an entire book report by the end of the book.

I recommend reading this book to anyone that wants a fun read. It is especially fun for 1st to 4th graders. My 5th and 6th graders liked the book as well. However, the 3rd and 4th graders really got into it.

Thank you to the author for sharing an early copy with me!

As a middle grade teacher, I absolutely loved this graphic novel chapter book. The Hunger Heroes are super-powered taco ingredients who help the kids of their city whenever they need a snack. Mr. Toots, Chip Ninja, Tammy Tomato, and Cheesy Leonard are characters student readers are going to love!

Missed Meal Mayhem follows our four Hunger Heroes as they hurry to help Jason, the victim of a 10-29 (a missed meal). Jason’s in school, and he has a big math test in Mrs. Sternbladder’s room, but he missed his breakfast. He has no energy and can’t concentrate. Will the Hunger Heroes be able to save the day?

Things I think student readers will enjoy:
- the food characters and their personalities, which will spark discussion and creativity among students about what other foods would make good story characters.
- kid humor. There’s a vomit vat for when Leonard is nervous, Mr. Toots is powered by beans, the angry vacuum cleaner.
- the wise words that teaches new vocabulary and has a pronunciation guide (pneumatic = new-ma-tic and is a “fancy way of saying air powered.”)
-the setting. School, specifically the gymnasium, where the Hunger Heroes have to dart, dodge, duck, dive, punch, punt, swat, and charge their way through a game of dodgeball.
-the change in the adult teacher, Mrs. Sternbladder. (Warning! May cause readers to emphasize with an adult!)

Highly recommend this new series. Publishing in October 2021…Pre-order now!

Kids are going to love The Hunger Heroes Missed Meal Mayhem by Jarrett Lerner as these superheroes are inspiring, creative, and lol FUN. Kids will connect with the story as what student hasn’t been hungry on a day in class and found it difficult to concentrate and pay attention. In view of the fact that Jason is a boy in need of a snack, the Hunger Heroes have their mission. One obstacle in the story about the teacher’s severe rule about snacking in class is resolved to kindly demonstrate how important it is to understand the reason behind a rigid rule. Imagination, humor, striking colors, comic text, and illustration make this a graphic novel for your elementary readers. Who wouldn’t want to travel on a taco Hovercraft! I laughed out loud and smiled through the entire book.

The elements of the graphic novel (text, image, sequence) tell the story not possible without one of the elements. Kids will read color noticing striking color shifts and then so does the action. The paneling is terrific. I like how the paneling was used to introduce the main characters. Jarrett Lerner gives the reader a portrait of each of them, some personality traits, their power, and their name in word art.

Just marvelous!

The hunger Heroes Missed meal Mayhem by Jarrett Lerner is a belly laugh waiting to happen. Jarrett so understands his audience for sure and this graphic novel delivers on so many levels.

10 and I became engaged right from the hunger hero’s headquarters where they learn about their next mission. Nobody should ever be hungry and with that the gang is off to save the day.

Heading to a local school this team of quest seeking food entertains us with their colorful identities as they cruise the local school halls looking for Jason who’s in need of food .

With the classrooms strict rules of “ no eating” what’s gonna happen? How can he or anyone learn when they’re hungry and can’t pay attention. Can the hunger Hero’s change the teachers mind? Fun read alone or together as we did and enjoy finding out what happens as the story unfolds .

10 and I certainly have our favorite characters here. Hers is chip ninja as she’s salty , crafty and clever of course . My favorite is Tammy , full of spirit and gets the job done.

Great for all ages

What struck me most from an illustrators perspective was the robust use of graphic novel design throughout. Not only we’re the characters quirky and fun, but the creative varied layout on each page kept me engaged in so much more than just the serious snacking issue at hand.

One of the projects I’d like to tackle this year is leaning towards a graphic or comic-strip style so I was particularly drawn to observing the style of the book. It seems that this style of story-telling offers as much freedom or constraints as one would want to give it… depending, I guess on whether it improves the story as a whole. In Jarrett Learner’s case it seems he was able to catapult his feisty little food items wholeheartedly into the heroes they are by employing this graphic novel design while stamping it with his own creative styling! It’s almost like one can develop your own form of graphic novel style as one would your own illustrative style…very interesting!

My hunger for knowledge and inspiration was fully satisfied.

Childrens graphic novel. The Hunger Heroes are a foursome of talking taco ingredients-- a bean, a corn chip, a tomato, and a block of cheese that are out to help the kids of the city in need of a snack. An alert goes off for Jason, who is about to have a math test but hasn't eaten since a half bowl of macaroni and cheese the night before. The Hunger Heroes set out to the school, dodge their way through a PE class playing dodgeball, and find their way to Jason's class. But then they find Ms. Sternbladder has very strict rules against snacking! What will they do?

This quick graphic novel is fun and adventurous. The familiar setting of the school and problem of being hungry make this easy to relate to for young readers. The four heroes are easy to distinguish being as they are different foods, and also have different personalities. The chip likes gadgets, the bean is toot-powered, the cheese is scared, and the tomato is take-charge. A cute story and the start of a new series. Recommended for elementary school readers.

Ah, Jarrett Lerner! What goofy fun this book is! A piece of cheese, a tomato, a bean and a chip combine to form the Hunger Heroes, ready to provide snacks wherever hunger is found. In this episode, the heroes must get nourishment to Jason who is sure to fail his Math test due to a skipped breakfast. And who is his teacher? Mrs. Sternbladder, of course, and she doesn’t allow food in her classroom because it could cause ants in search of crumbs!! Lerner’s jokes and puns come fast and furious, like when Chip is called to get on his friend’s shoulder or when Tammy Tomato speculates that bees might be in school to do some spelling. Don’t even try to think about all the sound effects and humor that goes along with the bean named Mr. Toots! This early elementary level graphic novel is a quick read that is certain to grab the attention of readers and budding artists from 2nd to 4th grade. Thanks for the advance reader copy, Simon & Schuster.

Move over, Ant Man, here come superheroes who will swoop in to feed a kid who has missed a meal. Enter: Mr. Toots (a bean), Chip Ninja (“She’s 100% corn based!”), and Tammy, a sassy, strong singing tomato. And don’t forget Leonard, a shy, nervous piece of cheese. In short chapters, readers will see the Hunger Heroes respond to a “10-29” at Pinchkid Elementary – Jason has missed a meal and his energy level is “lower than low.” Heroics follow, and even the teacher learns something.

The easy to read hand lettering and the brightly colored digital cartoon art is very kid friendly. I especially like that the panels are not crowded, allowing newly independent readers to easily integrate the text and illustrations. The story is silly with a modest supply of gross-out humor. A fun title for readers who are reluctant to take on chapter books.

WARNING: Reading this book will make your child laugh and want to read more! Jarrett Lerner knows how to create books young readers will gobble up. Clever illustrations, alliteration, new vocabulary presented in an accessible way...readers and educators will LOVE this book!

Jarrett Lerner just gets kids. He knows what will make them laugh and creates that in both words and pictures. As a 23+year educator who has taught elementary school and now tutors young readers, I know that many of them are still trying to find "that" book that gets them hooked on reading. This series is going to be one of those series for kids that they want to read every book that is released.

I am a big fan of Tammy Tomato, but I might be biased. A strong character named Tammy just really appeals to this all-grown-up Tammy who used to be quite shy!

Silly fun book that I think kids will enjoy. A tomato, tortilla chip, chunk of cheese, and bean are the “Hunger Heroes” who help provide snacks to kids in their city. This isn’t commentary on food insecurity. It’s all surface-level hijinks. They travel around in a flying taco and make fart jokes.

In this first book, a kid has missed breakfast but has a math test coming up, so the heroes break into the school to provide a snack. Not gonna lie, the heroes bypassing the check-in process and sneaking in through an open window made me slightly uncomfortable in our world of school safety concerns. But hopefully kids just see the humor and silly jokes.

Most of the action is told through speech and thought bubbles, but there are chunks of text throughout. Full color illustrations too. A little long, but the large, graphic text should still make this a good pick.

Kid tested and approved! Second graders found this book to be hilarious--and with a good point. Riffing off kids' love of superheroes, Lerner has created the Hunger Heroes, a bean, a nacho chip, a tomato, and a wedge of cheese, each with their own superpowers. When they get the call that Jason from Mrs. Sternbladder's class needs a snack before his math test, they mobilize! Each has a chance to use their superpower to get into the school and classroom and get Jason his snack, avoiding potentially deadly danger of dodge ball and evading the vaccuum. This fun book opens conversations about the importance of eating good foods regularly to avoid energy slumps and keep the brain pumping, as well as admiring the characters' craftiness in solving the case.

This is the best book I have ever read about a bean, a nacho chip, a tomato, and a wedge of cheese. Okay, it is the ONLY book I have ever read about a bean, a nacho chip, a tomato, and a wedge of cheese.. but that's not the point. The point is this is an EXCELLENT graphic novel. It has fun colorful illustrations, a fantastic storyline, incredible humor, and without a doubt the most memorable main characters ever to set foot on the pages of a graphic novel (see above about the bean, nacho chip, tomato, and cheese). Eat your heart out, Dog Man! I can't wait to read what these Snack Sized characters are up to next!

[I received a free electronic review copy of this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.]

4.5 stars = I loved it! Would re-read.

Delightful!! This was fantastic! I loved the characters, the humor, and the story. The humor is kid-friendly without being gross or over the top. I appreciated how the author worked to make the adult - one of the obstacles - sympathetic and an eventual ally. This is now at the top of my recommendation list for early chapter books/graphic novels. Do NOT miss this one!

Tacos and trouble - what else could you ask for in a early reader chapter book in graphic novel format. That's what you get with the main characters of Hunger Heroes. Jarrett brings to life some veggies that are out to help a child who didn't get breakfast that morning and has a math test later. Many kids know this too well and Jarrett delicately deals with the situation. Whether you are a reluctant reader or a reader just getting started with chapters - you will love this book! Can't wait to read book 2!

I was gifted this book by a fellow teacher for my classroom, and I was super excited because Jarret Lerner is absolutely fantastic in how he helps teachers and students! I read this in about an hour and I loved how simple to read it is for beginning readers or for students that are wanting to dip into chapter books but not sway too far from their love of graphic novels. I can’t wait for my students to get ahold of this one!

I bought this for my fifth grade class library. My kids’ reading levels span 2nd through 9th grade. I just read it and immediately ordered a second copy. I have a bright student who is meant to get a double dose of guided reading, and we will be reading this together when school resumes. He will be captivated by the humor and get the multisyllabic word practice he needs. We will both have a great time!

Funny illustrations. Has some potty humor. Very mild comparatively to other books out there. Ie. The Bean's name is Mr. Toots. And is powered by gas. And a joke reference to poop.
There are two vocabulary words with their definitions. So. At least it can be marked "educational." Another positive note: reminding the reader there is always two sides to a story. As well as the concept of empathy. Also one of those vocabulary words.
Age 8+ given the type of humor.

I'm always looking for new graphic novels for my middle school library, but this one is clearly meant for much younger readers. It's touted as a "graphic novel chapter book," which basically means it has the appeal of being mostly illustrated while still containing some good chunks of narrative text.

The characters are appropriately silly (a bean that farts, a chip that's a ninja), and I'm sure young readers would enjoy the adventures.

The Hunger Heroes, Mr. Toots, Chip Ninja, Tammy, and Leonard, are superheroes who help kids who need a snack. It's a goofy adventure that I just couldn't get into. Maybe I'm too adult for it. There are jokes but also a lesson about food fueling minds, possibly a little too heavy-handed. Not my favorite by a long shot in this Aladdin Graphic Novel Chapter Book line. For fans of Pizza & Taco that want more food-based stories.

Crisp, clean lines, bright colors, silly superheroes on the ready to fight hunger, make a fun entry into the growing easy chapter book/graphic novel market. I know plenty of kids that will relish the thought of a flying taco, farting beans, and a scaredy-cat cheese. Cautionary tale on the importance of breakfast before a test!

A taco chip, a bean, a tomato and a wedge of cheese fight their way through the halls of an elementary school to give a kid who missed breakfast a snack so that he will do well on his math test. Kind of one of those things that leaves me scratching my head as to which kid is going to be into this. We shall see.

The hilarious but exciting adventures of taco ingredients out to save the day for one hungry child! It's amazing how each character's personality shines through so few words and the illustrations. I feel like I know these foods! If I'm ever in a jam, I hope Mr. Toots & Co. are able to come rescue me!

A cute graphic novel about a bunch of food sources going to help a boy who hadn't gotten to eat breakfast before a test. The interplay/dialogue is cute and entertaining. I can't help it. I kept thinking the bean was a potatoe. I guess you can tell I am from the northwest. I do like burritos with potatoes in them.

This is classified into my library's graphic novel section, and to a degree I understand why, but I really do feel it would be better in regular kids fiction instead due to the formatting.
The story was okay, I think young kids, especially reluctant readers who have the reading ability to read alone, may enjoy this. The illustrations are simple and add to the storybwithout being too distracting.
