I have been waiting to read Vol 10 for ages but my bookstore was always sold out of it. I’m so glad I finally hit my hands on it! I love the way the story is progressing, I just wish there was more Mina!
the women in this manga are written so excellently. i love that they're not sexualised or annoying. this has quickly become one of my favourite series!!!
Kaiju invasion! The first wave is rough, but the second wave is brutal. Including an evil doppelganger?!?! Yikes!
Kikoru Shinomiya takes the cover and dominates most of the interior pages, so color me happy! The true hero of the series, she's once again put through the wringer.
no one ever let me read shonen AGAIN --------- Actual review:
This is yet another brilliant installment in the series. So sparkling, with a cliffhanger so devastatingly stressful, that it compelled me to catch up on the chapter releases, which I've never done before. Volume 10 gives us a character study and arc for Kikoru, who's been a staple since the beginning. Love seeing more of her backstory and motivations. As always, the art style is fantastic. Only 2 flaws for me: (1) I still don't understand some of the tech, so the action panels could be confusing at first because I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be seeing. (2) This is very much the Kikoru show, and I think this manga has its strongest dialogue/flow when the squads are together. But I love Kikoru, and I'm fully invested in this series!
This volume continues where things are left off, with Division Vice-Captain Hoshina trying to figure out how to synergize with his Numbers Weapon 10 and its consciousness. It's then followed up with Kaiju No 9 unleashing the second wave, a terrifying collection of kaijus with unique abilities. This is where the volume focuses entirely on Kikoru Shinomiya, giving her the chance to prove herself and the world that she can handle things on her own, and boy, does this keep you on the edge of your seat!
You can clearly see how this story arc is structured and how the upcoming volumes will be handled. There's a clear direction to highlight individual characters and their own personal growths. What's to come will surely only be action-packed battles of life and death.
Let's see if mangaka Naoya Matsumoto has some nice plot twists for fans now.
Леле, кога стигнах 10... Върви толкова наситено със сибития, дори и да са по шоненски стандартни... Кого го интересува всъщност, важното е, че мен ме хваща :D
Usually, I mention when writing reviews of this series that I forgot to breathe, but this time the overwhelming amount of times I had goosebumps while reading. Fear was gripping my heart because just when it seemed the Defense Force would be victorious, the creator had the situation looking even MORE dangerous and deeply deeply concerning.
That is exactly what happened here.
I LOVED the beginning and seeing Hoshina work with Kaiju. No 10 (the weapon) was EVERYTHING! It was a very fun battle to see them work together and then successfully conquer. Though Kaiju No. 10 being like "Let's go fight the officers!" made me laugh because why in the world would Hoshina do that?! LOL!
Things soon went south though, despite how AWESOME Mina looked, but let's stop there for a second. Can we just appreciate how fantastically written the ladies are in this series? It was practically said that Mina is one of the best Defense Force members in the WORLD, while Kikoru will one day be the core of the future Defense Force. I deeply love the care and attention he has put into making these ladies shine!
Speaking of Kikoru, I felt the battle she was in had me trapped in time. I had goosebumps almost the entire time and not even sure I can describe what I was feeling because she is THE Kikoru. And yet she is still growing, and just in this battle alone! Every panel had me gripping my manga, turning pages as fast as I could because what a satisfying unfolding of her story this volume was!
Granted, the ending though. The way these new kaiju are fighting has me afraid and literally left me asking where Kafaka was because this is the time we need the hero. (Not only that but tearing up at how cruel the kaiju is that Kikoru is fighting.)
I don't know what's going to happen next, but I will be seated! This series has surprised me with every single volume, with this one taking the cake! So very good!
I really love where this is going! I'll be honest, action tends to bore me pretty fast and before I picked up this volume I was wondering if I was nearing an end to my interest in this series- I love the characters and the plot and the concepts, but we've been basically in the middle of an unending battle for a while now with only a handful of plot occurring in each. We are still in that battle, but we've had such a big, important turn in things that I am fully reinvested and sped through this volume. I loved seeing Hoshima bickering with the Kaiju his suit is made with, and the appearance of Kaiju 15 was so incredibly eerie. This hinting at secret, dangerous plans by these identified level kaiju makes it seem like so much more is about to happen and is at stake! I did also really appreciate the moment of horrible chaos where Kafka is just like "man this is going to be hard to clean up" in his ex-sanitation brain 😂
I read this so fast because the end of season 2 anime was...not okay. It was interesting to see how the anime and manga differ, and which battles they highlighted or spaced out. I like the gradual increase of stakes and surprising turns. Quite a fun monster-fighting story!
5 ✨ Hoshinaa and #10's relationship single handedly reviving my love for this series AAAAAAA i'm a sucker for a good venom-eddy-ish relationship troupe and here we have it
This was just so cringe and ridiculous. I don't plan on continuing the series - maybe when it's completed. The past few volumes have been the same thing - "we've never seen a Kaiju this strong!" and "we've never seen a soldier this strong! They could be the strongest in the whole organization!" I feel like a jerk for this review too because I feel like it must sound like I'm some self-righteous asshole "oh I'm so smart I saw this coming" but the characters genuinely seem SO stupid. Four identified Kaiju show up near each of the strongest of the defense corps and then the corps are shocked that the Kaiju were MADE to defeat those specific members. We've been shown before that there's a genius Kaiju who is plotting ahead. Why are they so surprised? It just drove me nuts.
I absolutely love Hoshina and No. 10 together, they're so badass yet comedic, such a great duo!
Mina is so cool too, I love that like Hoshina, she has her own style of doing things. We haven't seen a lot of her in action yet, but now we finally got to see her kick ass and slay whilst doing it. One thing I do love about this manga is how strong the female characters are, and they're not sexualised at all.
After defeating most of the kaiju, suddenly five really strong identified kaiju appeared, I was honestly shocked (yet somewhat excited because I love seeing everyone fight!) Narumi is going to fight No. 11, Hoshina 12, the first division squad 13, Mina gets 14, and Kikoru faces 15.
Kikoru's fight was so intense, I was holding my breath so much as she battled an imitation of herself. Her seeing her mother definitely had me feeling a tad emotional, and I can say full heartedly that I despite No. 15, it's so cruel getting inside of Kikoru's head like that.
The other fighters are also struggling against their opponents, and it seems like the kaiju were specifically designed to be similar- and better- than their targets. Like Hoshina said, I never imagined the strongest would struggle like this...
Kikoru's volume and her internal pscycological struggles. I didn't think I would like this much!!
Love when writters do female character, strong physical but it makes sense, she has training all her life for battle, plus the battle armor is special too.
Also, another positive point: manga authors always make the worse decision for girl's armors, they always are with short pants, short t-shirt showing their belly button while they're fighting. We all know it doesn't make sense. Here, we don't have a over-sexualized version, the design is perfect for monsters battle, they're fully cover. It's a small detail but I appreciate it.
With the introduction to several new Kaiju, including the no.15 which I personally loved, to the shocking revelations at the end, this volume packed a punch. Seeing Mina do something as bad ass as what she did here was also such a treat. I’m not really understanding where this particular manga fell off at, besides the very awkward volume 5. Over all, it has kept my curiosity with the creatures as well as the stakes of it all.
shits hitting the fan and now i’m completely caught up (for now ofc) . 😹😹😹 anyway i love how even the strongest characters are going through character arcs, it makes everyone feel so much more human and less strongest-mf-alive-with-no-weaknesses type thing. i also am growing to love love love shinomiya, she has the potential to be one of my all time faves i can already feel it
The fact that this single fight has gone on for this long now makes it so that I am starting to forget why we were fighting, the larger context, but as long as the characterisation is this strong, I don’t mind being lost in the moment!
