The Love Story that Captured a Nation’s Heart

Joey and Rory Feek were enjoying a steadily growing fan base in country music when Joey was diagnosed unexpectedly with a rapidly spreading cancer. This vibrant and beautiful young woman would soon be on a unique journey for which no one is ever fully prepared. Her husband, Rory, and children, Heidi, Hopie, and Indiana, were beside her each step of the way. Rory, a prolific songwriter, entrepreneur, farmer, and overall tender man, has seen God bless his life in countless unexpected ways and had started a blog, thislifeilive.com, not really knowing its purpose other than he needed to write. That purpose soon became clearer when Joey’s cancer battle hit.

By inviting so many into the final months of Joey’s life, this astounding couple captured the hearts of millions with their powerful love story, the manner in which they were handling the diagnosis, and the inspiring simple way they had chosen to live their lives.

In this vulnerable book, Rory takes us into his own challenging life story and shows what can happen when God brings both his presence and the right companion into our lives. He also gives never-before-revealed details on what he calls “the long goodbye,” the blessing of being able to know that life is going to end and taking advantage of it. Feek shows how we all are actually there already and how we can learn to live that way every day. He then goes into detail toward the end of the book on what it’s like to try to move on with your life once you’ve “had it all.”

With short chapters this book just flowed. When it seemed like it was going to get too emotional it was the end of the chapter & a different part of the story began. One of the most raw stories I've ever read of faith & true love. Inspiring & beautiful.

“People pass away. It’s part of life. It’s hard and it’s terrible, but it’s gonna happen to all of us.”

An extraordinary story told very well. Feek bares his soul and talks from the heart about his life, which started badly and got worse as he lived it. The conversational tone pulls the reader in as if this was a chat over coffee.

“A different perspective from what I had most of my life. Finally opening my hands and turning my life over to God.”

So many quotable epigrams that I filled four pages of my notebook. The man is a professional writer: it shows.

“The only way this can work is if we are both willing to give everything up for the other person.”

I never heard of Rory Feek or Joey Martin. I’m not a fan of Country and Western music, but the man has a powerful message: admittedly Christian, but without the trappings and jargon of professional religion. He used only one theological word.

“The point where I did everything wrong was just the beginning of a bigger story. Just the setup.”

“I just wanted a little bit of something good, what I got was a lifetime of something great.”

If you read this book, be prepared to be moved, both by the hash Feek made of his own life and to its incredible outcomes. He takes you deeper inside himself than many memoirs and tell-alls. He shares his heart.

“A story that will live long after the man who told it is gone.”

“Her love strengthened my faith.”

Despite the fact that I'm a longtime CCM fan, I don't have any of Joey & Rory's music in my collection; hopefully, I can rectify that by using the iTunes Store. Still, I knew at least part of their story; it made news all over and broke the hearts of people, especially Christians, everywhere. When I read about Rory's checkered past and their disabled daughter, it made it even more heart-wrenching. I hope to meet Joey someday and tell her that her story was very inspiring.

That said...this book could have used some serious editing. Between chapters that were way too short, several blank pages, and a tendency to bounce from one subject to another, Rory's inspiring story is a bit drowned out by the sloppy way he tells it.

So, while sweet and touching, this wasn't quite what it could have been.

This Life I Live: One Man’s Extraordinary, Ordinary Life and the Woman Who Changed It Forever.

Oh my. This is such a heart-touching read. It ran me through a host of emotions and gave me a look into the super-man that Rory Feek is. He is very much what I expected—a humble, honest, and genuine man who is both grateful and in awe of how God has blessed him. He’s a shining example of husband, father, and Christian. That doesn’t mean he is perfect—he’s made mistakes—but he learned from them and allowed God to shape him into an exemplary man.

“Mine is a sad story and a happy one. A human tragedy and a comedy of errors. It’s Forrest Gump meets Jesus. The struggle of light against the power of darkness. It is a story of faith. Of love. And a hope that never dies.” ~excerpt

In this book, Rory reveals parts of his childhood and unstable nomadic upbringing. He lets us peek into his ups and downs, unabashedly. I love his conversational tone and use of words, as if he is unfolding his life’s events to a friend.

His personal account of allowing God to guide him in life is dear and emotional. As I expected, his strong and abiding love for his wife Joey, and the incredible impact she had on his life, is the most powerful part of this story. Rory’s love is palpable and solid, his introspection is admirable, and his faith and testimony are raw and sincere.

“I have said many times that I think I’ve spent too much of my life trying to write great songs and not enough time trying to be a great man.” ~excerpt

This Life I Live, by Rory Feek, is more than a memoir. It is an ideal example of how God can change a person, their outlook, their path, and their spirit. I can’t say enough good things about this book. I enjoyed every moment. There are no dull or meaningless pages. No boasting or brandishing. It is an honest and authentic display of Rory’s nature and spirit, and a gut-wrenchingly painful and beautiful love story.

“I’m thankful for the day we met that evening in September’ cause I’d rather have something to forget than nothing to remember.” ~excerpt

I was one of many who discovered Rory (and Joey) from his blog. I remember checking often and reading updates during the time of Joey's illness and hoping that she would beat her fight with cancer.

For those who read (and continue to read) his blog, you will probably enjoy this book. It's similar to his blog but is expanded into the length of the book. His writing style flows and is genuine, he truly seems like an authentic and genuinely down-to-earth person.

Each of the small chapters contain stories from his life and I enjoyed the layout as well as the content for each story. Rory was brutally honest with his emotions as well as who he is and how he has grown as a person. In the pages of this book, he admits that he's not perfect (none of us are) and does not put himself on a pedestal of standards.

I really enjoyed this book and it was a true example of resilience, strength, and having faith. Rory faced a lot of misfortunes in his life that could have anyone questioning the fairness of life. At the same time, he continues to live and live well.

I know he has another book being published later this year and I will definitely be reading it. His personality and his writing style is inspiring and we need more of that in this world.

This book based on Rory's blog is thoughtful, honest, and painful to read. (I cried the last five chapters.) I loved watching the two of them on Nashville Star. A inside look at a couple who were in the limelight for too short of time.

This is more than just the love story of Joey and Rory, a former country music duo, but it is also a memoir/biography of Rory Feek as a fair bit of it covers his life from his childhood until he met Joey. For those not familiar with what happened since not everything that floods the internet and Facebook (if you even go there) is something we see, Joey was diagnosed with cancer shortly after giving birth and died within a couple of years.

Rory had been a successful country music songwriter for a number of years before they met--some of his songs had already topped the charts as various singers recorded them and even won Grammy Awards, and although it took a while for his song writing career to start (for more you can read the book or scour the internet). The two rocketed up to stardom after being finalists on a show I don't think I had ever heard of before reading this book, called Can you Duet? on CMT.

This was an easy read, not boring, not saccharine, but even though much of his music is secular, part of this book is his testimony of becoming a committed Christian and changing his lifestyle, but that is not nearly as unusual in the Country Music world as it might be in other music genres.

If you are not familiar with Joey + Rory they are a husband and wife country music duo. They first came to my attention when they entered a talent contest show on TV called Can You Duet. I followed their music and watched their TV reality show. They seemed like they had a dream life. Then shortly after giving birth to their only child, a daughter, who was born with Down's Syndrome, Joey was diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer. Her husband Rory has so graciously shared their journey with us on his blog. This book is Rory's autobiography and how he came into his faith to face life's hurdles. The story is honest and he's not afraid to tell us his faults. The story flows, almost in a lyrical way, which is not surprising considering this guy is a master songwriter and has written some well-known country songs.

This book was so heartbreaking! It took me a few days to listen because there were times I did not want anything sad so I passed on listening to it but then would pick it back up. It is however, a very short read.

This is a non-fiction story of Rory Feek and his life. He tells has his story from being a child and being raised as what people call "Trailer Trash" and to his rise as a singer and his beautiful marriage to his wife to the downfall of the word "Cancer" that would soon take his wife from him - to the most precious gift of all, having a child but then only to have the child to lose its mother and not be raised with her.

This story is blunt and honest. Lots of trigger warnings but so very good. Also, this is very Christian related because of his learning to lean on God and trusting the lord with unseen things he did not understand but yet feeling that the Lord was still there through it all and had a plan for his life even through all the heartache.

I highly recommend this book!

I really like Joey and Rory's music and I've been a follower of Rory's blog, "This Life I Live" for a while. So, I was quite excited when I found his book. Overall, I would say that this is a good book. I did find some aspects to be slow and kind of boring. But, the slow points get better and ultimately tie in beautifully with Rory's overall message: do the best with what God gave you and love every minute of it. Rory's book, like his blog, are sincere and heartfelt - there were moments where I felt like he was speaking right to me at my kitchen table. This book does make you think about God's blessings - not only in their lives, but in yours as well. For that message in particular, I am grateful.

Could not put this book down.

I connected to this book on almost every level. It was actually a little frightening at times just how much I could relate to his story. I remember when Joey was very sick and everyone was sharing their story on Facebook & holding prayer vigils. It broke my heart for this beautiful young family whose life and family had really just begun, but They chose to have faith in Him and use what little time they did have to touch the lives of millions around the world while making the most of the precious time they have together, loving and serving one another.

How courageous and brave to put such a personal heartbreaking story out into the world, but it's also a story that everyone needs to hear of perseverance, Gods love, trust, the power of prayer and being a true overcomer which Rory Feek is in every sense of the word from his troubled childhood, searching for love in all the wrong places and losing the love of his life, Rory still chooses to see the beauty and magic this world and life have to offer while choosing to share his journey and try to help others who are in similar situations.

A few life lessons I will remember from this book: Live life for today as tomorrow isn't promised. Choose love and joy, you may never know the impact you have on someone's day. Your husband and wife are a gift. Choose to love and serve one another. Try to always look at the silver lining and the big picture, as Rory would say the small things are what matters.

I’ll be honest. When I was approached to write a review of Rory Feek’s newly released autobiographical book This Life I Live, I had no idea who he was. As I learned a little more the story became vaguely familiar – country music songwriter, married to a country music singer, grammy award, baby with down syndrome, and cancer were random phrases and words I remembered hearing. I was somewhat hesitant about the content. I could only imagine what type of escapades an award-winning country music singer/songwriter would tell about his life, but the more I learned about his story the more excited I felt when the book finally arrived on my doorstep.

Labeled as a love story, I felt that this was so much more. It is a story of choices, faith, growth, resilience, and love. It’s about a man and a woman that faced many of the same challenges we see in our own lives, and how they chose to learn from them. I found it inspiring and well worth my time.

My husband and I have always enjoyed the music of Joey and Rory. I followed Rory's blog during Joey's illness and watched how Joey went through what she did with such faith. I shed so many tears you would have thought I personally knew her.
This book was written with honesty, telling things that were hard for Rory to write about. He had a rough life and did things that were not good. But God and Joey changed all that.
The chapters in this book are short and I was glad for that. When I would become emotional, I knew the chapter would soon be over and I could close the book until I got myself together. Then I would pick it up again and continue. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

I only finished this book because my husband had bought it for me years ago as a gift since he knew I loved listening to Joey and Rory!

I have my own opinions and just blunt and to the point sooooooo…..
He uses language that I would rather not read. The boom was all over the place. I know he writes a blog, but I was kinda bored with the random rambling he went on and on about.

Everyone has a past, that includes me too, but there were things I wish I had not even read about his past. Some I felt was repeated.

As a country music fan, I knew of Joey & Rory as minor stars in the genre before I saw them at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe back in 2010. The Bluebird is a small, intimate venue where you're pretty much breathing down the artists' necks as they play acoustic stuff...you feel more of a personal connection to the artists as they talk between songs and primarily play material that they themselves wrote. As a result, I always cared a bit more about these two going forward than I might have otherwise. (As it turns out, the Bluebird is actually also where these two first crossed paths; they talked about it that night in 2010, and it gets rehashed here in this book.)

I also think that live experience probably gave me more of a feel for Rory Feek the man than I otherwise would have had, and it was easier to read this book in his voice. Given his prolific blogging, I do presume that these words came from his pen and not a ghostwriter's.

Rory says early in this book that his life isn't necessarily anything remarkable. I don't particularly disagree. But still, this was a pretty compelling read for what it was. Some of his story was foreign to me, some was relatable, but it all felt like the real and raw reflections of a guy from a simple upbringing doing the best he could in the world. Obviously it was never going to be some sort of literary classic - it would have been absurd to expect as much - but it was very good in telling the story that it set out to.

This book is one of the greatest love stories I've read. Yet, it's also one of the most powerful testimonies of faith ever written; and beautifully written by the man who lived it, Rory Feek.
I learned about Joey and Rory Feek from a Facebook post by the country singer, Gene Watson.
Gene was asking for prayers for Joey who was diagnosed with cancer. It was there I learned of Rory's blog, This Life I Live, which I immediately subscribed to and began reading the story that touched perhaps millions of lives. And now, Rory's book tells us the complete story: their lives before God bringing them together, how He joined two separate paths into one which became one of Nashville's favorite duets. And we're all blessed by Rory's sharing the courage, hope and faith, both Joey and Rory exhibited, while fighting terminal cancer. I believe, like Rory, that this story was inspired by God, that He chose Rory to write it, and gave him the skills to be an inspiration, not only to believers, but to all who read it.

Updated Review:

I gave this book a 5⭐️ rating.

“Her story. His story. The love story of Joey and Rory.”

I was given this book by a girl I babysit for and was a little weary on it since I’m not a huge nonfiction fan. I also didn’t really know much about this couple besides one song, Cheater Cheater, from my high school days.

I really enjoyed this book. If I’m honest this book is what started me on my own journey to learn more and become closer to God. Rory tells his own journey to God throughout this book and it just got me thinking and wanting a closer connection with my faith.

This book also made me look at my father in a new light. In one chapter Rory tells of his struggles being a parent and says that we are all just doing the best we can with what we have. That just hit me and made me appreciate all my father did for me as I was growing up. It also gave me a better outlook on how I parent my own kids and helped me not be as hard on myself during the difficult days of raising a toddler.

This is so greatly written. Rory sure does have a way with words. I respect how transparent he is when writing about his life. He captivated Joey's story so well. I admire him as a Godly man, Joey had the faith that I pray to one day acquire & their love story is really one that's so inspiring & a great example to young marriages, like mine, as to how God says marriage is to be. Great work Rory! I pray for Gods continual hand & face in yours & yours girls lives.

This Life I Live

I could not put down this extraordinary story of how a simple flawed man was blessed beyond his wildest dreams and found the love of his life. He was changed and his faith stayed strong. I followed Rory Feek's blog for month's during Joey's illness. This book tied all of the pieces together.

This was FANTASTIC. Sad? Yes. But also so moving that you will think differently of your life and hopefully make changes for the better. I listened to this book on Audible. I HIGHLY recommend this format because Rory Feek is narrating the book and I could hear the emotion in his voice. I LOVE it when authors read their own books. I think everyone should read this.

Rory is one half of the counrty duo, Joey + Rory. Joey died of cancer in 2016. I thought that I would love this book because the blog that Rory wrote while his wife was dying is amazing. The book is more uneven and I think it was written too quickly. I didn't really care that much about his childhood. Theirs was a beautiful love story and I wish the book did it justice.
