Creativity for Critical Thinkers

Rate this book
This unique book is a concise introduction to creativity--the art of expanding possibility. Covering such practical methods as multiplying options, brainstorming, lateral thinking, reframing problems, and many others, it offers provocative and effective methods for constructive and expansive kinds of thinking. These methods are illustrated and reinforced through exercises and applications that range from science and technology to the arts; from the small aggravations of everyday life to the largest difficulties in politics, the family, and the future; and from "creative good citizenship" to "creativity to change the world."
Creativity for Critical Thinkers is an ideal supplement for any general course in thinking skills, and in particular for courses in critical thinking, as it frees them from a preoccupation with "critical thinking" as merely criticism . It can be used in creative writing and design courses as well, and provides a quick and engaging introduction to creative thinking for workshop participants and general readers. It shows readers who have been trained to think "in the box" how to think "out of the box"--freely and imaginatively. By looking at the world or some part of the world as it could be, creativity offers an entirely new view of the world as it is.

Recently I realised that I scratch off ideas too soon, or when someone tells me about their ideas, I cannot help but think about all the possible problems arising. This worries me, because I am an industrial design student and I am supposed to be creative. So when I saw this book in the library, it felt like it was pointing its finger at me, so I had to read it.

Creativity for Critical Thinkers is an 80 pages book, that discusses some methods on how to generate ideas quickly and it gives the reader tips on how to loosen up. I did find myself coming up with ideas as I read the book and it inspired me to look at problems from a different angle. Although that is easier said than done. The methods the author provides to generate ideas are five, and the ways to reframe problem are three.

Even though it is a short book, the author did repeat points over-and-over again (which is a trend I am seeing with almost every non-fiction book I read). I was hoping I would be able to avoid repetition, because the book is short. Another problem I had with the book, is the examples given; the ideas generated using the method. It is was written as if the author is coming up with them on the spot, and this resulted in uncomfortable sentences.

"An immovable rock, like a wall, eh? Suppose it were a wall?"

Eh???

"That's certainly random! (...) Again, it will seem silly. But wait -give it a second-let's think."

"Hmm...could a burned-out light bulb be made into some kind of bottle stopper?"

I personally did not enjoy reading these parts, they come off fake and forced; to create the illusion of brainstorming.

In conclusion, it is a light and quick read. It did help me loosen up a bit and not be too uptight, however, I think it barely scratches the surface of creativity and if the author avoided repetition there would have been more methods offered.

Preface

p.vi – Creativity is the art of expanding possibility. It is the art of finding unexpected space in problems that seem totally stuck to everyone else. It is the ability to think “out of the box” while the rest of us barely realize that we are in a box.

1 – Creativity’s Promise

p.3 – Creativity is the ability to cast a situation or challenging problem in a new light and thereby open up possibilities in it that were not evident before.

Creative people are critical: they don’t stop with the “given” and the (supposedly) “obvious.” They are imaginative: they make a habit of thinking in more open and supple ways, keeping their minds two steps ahead of things as they are. They are inventive: they consciously seek to devise new things and new ways of thinking.

And creative people are disciplined and persistent. Creativity can require a certain kind of playfulness, but it does not mean just letting go. Creativity takes work.

There were a few good tips for thinking outside the box that I will try to use but the short book did feel a little repetitive.

The biggest take away for me was reframing problems in life as opportunities for positive change (helped by creative thinking).
