I don't know if anyone who didn't grow up with Sailor Moon (through their childhood or teen years) can ever really understand the allure of this series, its characters, and its story or feel an impact from all of it. Most of the people I know who are fans fell in love with the series first through the anime (which aired in Japan from 1992-1997 and then very haphazardly in the United States from 1995-2000) and then later discovered the original manga series once the internet came into their homes. I'm no different: I probably would never have found out about the manga if I hadn't been browsing Sailor Moon fan sites in 2000 and come across the information (and the "pretty art" from the manga).

To an outsider, Sailor Moon probably seems a bit laughable: fourteen-year old Usagi Tsukino (or maybe, if you're like me, you know her more by her American dubbed name "Serena") is a failing middle-school student who one day comes across a bullied black cat with a bandage over its forehead. When Usagi peels back the bandage, she uncovers a golden crescent moon upon the cat's forehead. This meeting proves to be an unknown catalyst in Usagi's life because soon she will uncover her destiny of fighting evil alongside other girls who share the same destiny...all the while wearing short-skirted sailor suits as their uniforms. (Oh, and there's also a tuxedo-wearing ally who uses roses against his enemies!)

But there's a charm to it all so long as you don't take it so seriously. Sure, rereading the manga (now that it's being rereleased for a new generation of fans to adore) may make me want to deconstruct everything, pick apart the plot, and try to mash it into the logic of my "more mature" brain...but then I would be tainting the memories of the series and characters I have loved since childhood. I don't want to ruin it for myself, so I won't try to force it to fit into my current storytelling standards. I'll just let it be and hope, hope, hope that girls continue to find and love this series. May it empower them.

¡REVIVIR MI INFANCIA!
¡Amo Sailor Moon!

For all of my love of Sailor Moon, this was my first time reading Naoko Takeuchi's creation in manga form. I REALLY wish I would have gotten to this when I was younger because I know my younger self would have loved it so much!

Now, I do like it a lot, but I don't appreciate it at this age quite as much as I did when I was younger. The traditional Manga format of reading takes a bit to get used to, but then you don't even notice that you are reading differently than normal.

The art was beautiful, and I loved the additional insight into the background of stories that I loved as a child. I will always laugh at how Sailor Moon came up with her heroine name, though haha.

First book of the booktubeathon extended edition is complete!!

I loved the anime as a kid (though I remember nothing of it) so this is nice to be reading! Thank you Ashlynn for getting me this!!

I had one major issue and it's the artwork. I find it a huge mess. Too much on a page. I like simple, this is overdone and there's just too much going on. But I can ignore it and enjoy the story and dang I wish I had more of the volumes!!

Like a lot of people my age, I used to be a huge fan of the original Sailor Moon anime when I was a kid. It was a delightful mix of weird mythology, superheroics, romance and humour that at the time appealed to almost every kid in my social group over the age of four. So when the original manga was announced to get published in my country, I decided to give this nostalgic artefact a read to see how it holds up. Well, unsurprisingly, for a story originally published in Japan in the early 90's and targeted primarily towards young girls, the book has its problems, though i's not too bad.

You probably know the story by now — Usagi Tsukino is a regular Japanese schoolgirl, not very bright, obsessed with video games and pretty things. One day she meets a cosmic cat named Luna who tells her that she is now Sailor Moon, guardian of peace and protector of justice, and she must fight evil and find other girls to become her team of Sailor Scouts. Together, they are looking for a mysterious Silver Crystal, but there are also weird evil guys who want that crystal as well, not to mention Tuxedo Mask — a steamy, dreamy older boy in a mask who, you guessed it, is also looking for that same crystal and has the hots for Usagi.

For 1991, the book is very progressive — there's a whole all-girl team of superheroes, all with distinct personalities and unique power sets. Even though Tuxedo Mask comes to help in girls' every encounter with evil, they are still more than capable and manage to win almost every fight themselves.

However, the big story is where the book really doesn't hold up very well. The villains and their evil plot are extremely superficial, the hunt for a McGuffin couldn't be any more McGuffin-y if they tried, and it's all just very generic by modern standards. From what I remember from watching the show, the story does get more of an edge and complexity as it goes along, but for now, just from the first volume you really couldn't tell.

The artwork, while technically exquisite, doesn't convey action very well. Whenever the villains show up it just breaks down into some splotches and unidentified shapes, and it's anyone's guess what is actually going on until the outcome of the battle is conveniently explained at the end of every chapter. Again, this is something that might improve in latter volumes, but for now doesn’t leave the best impression.

And then there’s the girliness of it all. This is not a criticism as much as just me admitting that I’m far from being the target audience here, but Sailor Moon is very 90’s version of being a girly book. When it’s not being a superhero story, it‘s mostly about girls a) obsessing over boys and choosing which one they like the most, or b) drooling over jewelry, pretty clothes and other beautiful things. Again, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that —who am I to say what girls should and shouldn’t do — but compared to all the modern girl-oriented media, Sailor Moon just doesn’t feel as progressive as it probably once did.

Saying all that, I still can’t deny that I enjoyed reading it. The core of the book is not all this pink superheroic foil after all, it’s the relationship and the chemistry between the main characters, and this is what Naoko Takeuchi got exactly right from the start. Usagi, Ami, Rei and Makoto all have their distinct personalities and traits, and together they create a delightful team dynamic that is so fun to follow.

Overall, the first volume of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is a mixed bag. It aged pretty poorly in certain areas and still holds up fairly well in others. It offers a nostalgia fix for those who crave it, but might feel too jarring to those who come across it for the first time in 2019. I personally enjoyed my time with the book well enough to give the next volume a try, but there are definitely better books featuring strong female heroes out there nowadays.

DNF at p.119

I really wanted to like this, but this was awful. I'm sure a lot of people really like this sort of thing, but it's not for me. FMA was so much better than this.

Usagi drove me nuts. She's so immature and vacuous. She introduces herself at the beginning of every act. WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

At the the point where I would have given it 3/5 stars, I was considering reading the second one to see if there's an improvement, but now?

After a certain point, I didn't have a clue what was going on. This is coming from a huge fantasy enthusiast. What a disappointment. I swear, the only reason I'm so close to my reading goal for this year is because I'm DNFing books left and right...

I'm just going to come right out and say it: 'Sailor Moon' is my one childhood obsession I've never outgrown. It was my first real introduction to the idea of girl power, and the anime that first got me into anime.

'Sailor Moon' is like 'Power Rangers'. One similarity is its nostalgic charm far exceeds its cheesiness. Anyone who grew up in the 90's like I did will understand the power those kinds of kid's shows had in starting many roads to geekdom. Its place in pop culture history among anime fans is unmistakable.

I don't regard 'Sailor Moon' as a guilty pleasure, and neither should anyone who grew up watching the anime. While I now know that the English dub was rather rubbish - with so many edits, painfully bad dialogue and voice acting, and characters being Americanized - the original Japanese episodes I saw on the internet are heartily pleasurable for 90's anime. Not to mention dark and dramatic. I only wanted to know more about it as I got older.

Now, as a trainee writer, 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon' by Naoko Takeuchi is one of the things which influences me both consciously and unconsciously. As an adult, I hold it in great appreciation, and it earns a permanent place in my girl power-loving heart.

So what to say about the newly translated and uncut manga Vol 1 edition? Is it any good, even for non-'Sailor Moon' fans? Well, yeah. I think it's very good.

The artwork is beautiful and compliments the story with grace. Usagi Tsukino, our heroine of justice, really does develop throughout the first manga volume. She grows to think like a soldier, and not so much like a clumsy and love-struck teenager. Unlike the anime where she has to be saved and lectured all the damn time over a hundred episodes in. Since she does start out as a normal fourteen-year-old, it's realistic that at first she would be scared and crying over such a hard responsibility of saving the universe from frightening otherworldly monsters. Then she reluctantly but surely acts like a guardian should, and even her cat mentor Luna is impressed with her.

I never really liked Tuxedo Mask in the anime - yeah, not a fangirl, I'm afraid - and my opinion of him has not changed much in this manga volume. But he has a personality and goes through an arc like Usagi. Near the end though he does act recklessly and stupidly...

And because this is a shoujo manga, romance is one of its key aspects. The relationship between Usagi/Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask is predestined, however at least they start out not liking each other much in their civilian forms. It leaves time for their love to properly develop, just like a normal couple.

The rest of the Sailor Soldiers - Mercury, Mars and Jupiter - are also great in their own unique way.

Yes, the manga is cheesy, and there are plot holes. The villains of the Dark Kingdom are not so interesting yet, but there is time for their threat and menace to grow stronger throughout the series.

The nostalgic charm is there. And considering that 'Sailor Moon' was originally published in Japan in 1991, I'd say it still holds up. It influenced the Magical Girl genre greatly, and anime in general. Naoko Takeuchi created something special in 'Sailor Moon', right after creating 'Codename Sailor V', its predecessor.

Heartfelt, enjoyable and so much fun, with more to it than appearances suggest, I recommend 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Vol 1' to any fan of the anime - hardcore, old school or casual. Or to anyone who grew up watching it on TV on Saturday mornings.

In the name of the Moon, I love 'Sailor Moon'!

Anyway, Final Score: 4/5

Cute. I remember loving the TV show when I was a kid, and I liked this volume quite a bit as well.

The art work is nice, though there are a few drawings that look a bit odd due to awkward proportions on characters. It's still loads better than I'd ever be able to do, though.

The story is interesting, and it's doesn't seem dated - I can see it still being popular today. The characters personalities are believable, and mostly likeable (Usagi is a crybaby, which I can see people finding annoying).

The main downside I can see to the volume is that it goes quite quickly. We're introduced to 5 of the main characters just in this volume. It would be nice if it was a bit slower paced, with Usagi being given time to settle into her new powers rather than being action-paced. It's still enjoyable, though, and there's lots of volumes so hopefully we get to know the characters better in the future.

One thing that's fun for me is drawing parallels between the TV show and manga - it's interesting to compare the two and see how they differ, in events and timeline and such.

2019 re-read:
Most of my earlier points still stand. I still like the series (I really should get around to checking out some of the later volumes). It's a cute series, and nostalgic to read - I used to LOVE the T.V. Show. The art style is nice, though very 90s.

Cons that come to mind is that yes, it feels very rushed. There are scenes that should have been fleshed out more, so they don't feel so disjointed. And the first volume covers events that take place throughout the entire first season of the show, including killing off several major villains. They should have taken more time to let the characters learn about their powers, and how to work together in between additions to the group, I think.
The text (translation) feels a bit odd, as well. Maybe the translator wasn't a native English speaker? The text doesn't flow naturally, and the characters speak in a fashion that feels as disjointed as some of the panels.

This where it all started for me. My interest in manga (and, by extension, western comics) really started watching Sailor Moon early on weekday mornings, getting ready to go to high school. Ah, memories. And yes, Sailor Moon really does hold up to my memories of a fun, romantic, and beautifully drawn manga.

Sailor Moon herself is probably a character you either love or hate. She's flawed, and yet she's given this power that she really doesn't know what to do with. Let's be honest, Usagi is a bit of a mess, especially at first. And yet I still love her, because she's just so easy to love. Maybe it's because she can get herself together to get done what she needs to, or because people don't make excuses for her all the time, or because she is so loving at heart.

I love these new editions. I think the cover art is new (squee!) and I can finally complete my collection after years of the entire series being out of print. (Eventually, some of the later volumes became impossible to find for anything that I could reasonably pay, and I paid unreasonably for a few of them.) I also like the new translation. Yes, I did compare the first chapter in the new edition to the first chapter in the original Tokyopop translation. Huge improvement. Just fixing the names (Bunny, ugh) is a gift to fans.

Anime of my childhood. I praise this manga to the heavens. A girl with blonde buns and long hair enchanted my life, remaining in my world for a long time. There are other manga that are also worth attention, but this one is special and unique to me. First of all, beautiful illustrations..., wonderful sailor senshi characters, and an engaging plot. I think everyone can read it, not only fans of this series. Just beautiful!!

First, before you do anything else, go and listen to this.

Good, now we can begin all proper and such.

I feel like this should be a review in two parts. The nostalgia from my early childhood and the reality of the volume itself.

Part ONE:

Back in the days long, long before I knew what anime or manga were, I was but a baby. A baby that really liked watching cartoons. Sailor Moon was a show that I would catch on TV every so often, during the days before I had to attend kindergarten. Sailor Moon was paired with Cardcaptor Sakura, Volume 1 and I remember sitting right up in front of my TV to watch these magical girls in pretty dresses dance and play.

As I got older, my memories of Sailor Moon faded. But that show still played a bit of an role in my life, from strange dreams to odd doodles, Sailor Moon characters kept popping up even if I no longer remembered where they were from or what their names were. For years I didn't know if these characters were from something I had seen or a combination of things in my own strange imagination.

It wasn't till I was in my early teens that I started watching anime again. Suddenly it all clicked. Introduce the internet and I was set with all the information I could have ever wanted to fill in the blanks all those years had created.

However, ever since, I haven't really cared to look into Sailor Moon again. It's more difficult then it should be to get your hands on episodes of the show or even the manga itself. But with this reprint and soon the anime reboot, I'm glad to finally be returning to this world.

Part TWO

This is the first time I've read the Sailor Moon manga. As stated above I was introduced to this property through the anime. I think because this isn't the medium I'm familiar with I was able to remove my rose coloured glasses somewhat and see the manga more for what it means to me now then just what it meant to my childhood. It's the distinction between the fantasy of my memories and the reality of the actual content. It matches up in some ways, but not so much in others.

With all that said, a few things very much surprised me in this first volume.

Firstly, this is a pretty long volume. There is a lot of ground to cover for an introduction and for a volume one it's length actually manages to successfully embody quite a bit of information. It's harder then it may sound to introduce so many characters and relationships without making the story feel rushed. Although the plot of the book can be a little touch and go (we're fighting an enemy!, who is the enemy!?, I don't know!, Why? I don't know! How? I don't know! Wow, Tuxedo Mask is awefully cute! Right, sorry, enemy battle!) The characters were all introduced seamlessly, which was something I was worried about going into this.

Everything was pretty stellar! I came into this fully knowing there was a chance I would be disappointed, but everything was amazing. There are some places where the translation lacked, like during banter and some comical moments, but that could easily be forgiven.

However, I did have one issue. I did not expect the insta-love. It is unmistakable! Oh my god. So much, so much. I love Tuxedo Mask, I honestly do, but that boy has such a Snow White complex!

I just didn't get the connection that these two are suppose to have in this first volume. I knew it would move along quite quickly, but they haven't so much as had a full conversation. I had always sort-of thought that the beginning of their romance didn't have such an empty start. That definitely bothered me, but it has to be kept in mind that this is how most manga in the genre operate. Unfortunate, but forgiveable.

Hopefully the next volume will improve on that front. Otherwise, this was really amazing to finally read. I can't wait for volume 2!!

The Pretty Guardian in a Sailor Suit! Guardian of Beauty and Justice! Sailor Moon! Time to re-read this delightful series.

I am a big fan of this series, watched most of the anime, read the manga and the side-stories. I thought it was high time for me to re-read the manga again. While I do remember most details I was still eager to see how it all started and see the girls, and then especially Usagi, grow up and get stronger, better, see their friendship build.

This one starts it all. We meet Usagi, a slightly dim girl with a big heart and a big stomach. I have to say that while I have found Usagi a bit annoying when I watched/re-watched the anime, read the manga, I find her much more bearable now after years. Plus, hello, if I would have gotten magic powers at 14 and have to deal with scary monsters my reaction would also be to just cry or run away. Really. But like Usagi I would have grown up, gotten stronger, gotten braver, which is what I am looking forward to seeing as I read this manga.
I do wonder how she ever gets through school given her grades are abysmal (but then again this is something I wonder about more often in manga and anime). This girl cares more about friendship, eating some yummy snacks, daydreaming about hot boys (and then especially a certain Tuxedo Mask). I love how fun and sweet she is. She is the ultimate best friend, she will always be there for you if you need her. She is kind and caring.

I also love the other girls, though I still think it is a bit overkill to give Ami that much IQ. She can be smart with an IQ of 160, I don't really get why the 300. But I am at least glad she isn't like other girls with high IQ *cough Hermione*. She is a sweet girl who likes to help her friends and at times may get a bit absorbed in studying and tests. I love Mako and how she is strong and tall but loves cute stuff. And Rei, ah Rei. Strong and cool Rei who has a bit of a temper, but is still a very great person to have as a friend.

We also meet Naru who is a friend of Usagi. I do love the girl but I feel sad knowing that we will see less and less of her as the story continues.

While I do know the seal is intact and that they have no memories of whatever happened in the past, I still laugh a bit at their search for the princess and how each time a princess pops up they think it may be her.

I do have to say I did think it was a bit of a shame how easily the sailor senshi were found. I get that they need to assemble fast, but this was just a tad too hilarious for me. I would have liked it to be a bit more spread out.
I do also think it was a bit weird how they never assumed Sailor V to be one of them, at least they never talk to her as if she could be part of the team. She is so famous in this one. Which also brings to the next point, why didn't Artemis go find the other senshi after finding Sailor V? I guess maybe it is time for me to re-read the Sailor V manga. :P

The battles are fun and exciting to read and while I knew how they would end I definitely was on the edge of my seat and rooting for the girls to defeat this villain with their new and growing powers.

The accessories the girls get, oh man, I so would love to have them. They are pretty and fancy.

And there is one thing I still have to mention, the budding romance between Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Moon. I just love these two together and I am eager to see them fall in love for real. For them to discover their shared past. They make such a sweet and wonderful pair. OK, kissing a girl while she is sleeping and slightly drunk... feels uncomfortable.

The art is still as fabulous as it always has been. I am a big lover of Naoko Takeuchi's art, she draws everything so gorgeous, you just want to step in the world.

I am definitely going to continue reading. Not sure if I am in the mood to write a long review for each volume, but I may combine the smaller ones together in the end.

I would recommend this volume and the others and the anime to everyone looking for a great magical girl read with gorgeous art and fabulous characters.

"...Ah...
The feeling.
It feels a bit nostalgic...
Like I've felt it...somewhere before...
So soft...and warm...I've felt it...many times before...those sweet lips..." (p.160-161)

MOON PRISM POWER, MAKE UP!!!

"Tuxedo Mask...
I'm the weirdo, right? I just hear the name and my heart goes racing. I'm just weird.
But his hands are so warm...
And when I'm in his arms...it's like an old, familiar feeling.
It feels like I've known him forever." (p.167)

Most of you probably remember Sailor Moon as a rather silly cartoon series from the mid-90s. And you're probably looking at me wondering, "Why is he reading a stupid kid's comic?" What you have to understand, though, is that what aired in the US was a bowdlerized dub of a series that was itself heavily watered down from its source material. Among the more notable offenses, the American dub handwaved away all the deaths in the series, turned one gay male character into a straight woman, turned a lesbian couple into cousins, and added in facile "and knowing is half the battle" tags to the end of the show. The two part series finale was so heavily censored that it ended up airing as a single episode, and another half dozen episodes were simply never aired in the US.

So, yeah, the Sailor Moon you watched back in the day was not the real Sailor Moon written by Naoko Takeuchi.

That's not to say this is a dark and depressing series. Although the manga is more mature than what Americans are familiar with, it's still highly optimistic, especially compared to the magical girl series that have come since -- particularly Madoka, Utena, and the later Nanoha seasons. Going into the manga, I was a little worried about how those series would affect my enjoyment of Sailor Moon -- would I be able to look at Luna and the Sailor Crystals without thinking of Kyubey and Grief Seeds? Thankfully the story is engrossing enough that it drove away all thought of Madoka. The only point that nagged me was the ease at which Ami, Rei and Makoto accepted what was going on. There's one moment late in this volume when the girls ask Luna for more details of what's going on, but he dismisses them with, "It's too difficult to explain now," and they just accept that. Considering the characters are all 14 years old, I guess I can buy that they're too naive to think, "Hmm, how do we know this guy isn't a demonic pederast who wants to eat our souls?"

Besides, how can a kitty be evil?

This manga brought back so many memories! I was so happy to read it and step back into the world of Sailor Moon. If you haven't read this manga I would definitely recommend checking it out. I'm not sure what the difference is between the original manga and this one, but I do know that I definitely enjoyed reading it! I'll be watching the anime and reading the manga for the rest of the year.
