I really liked this book (as well as "Basic Baking"), it helped me a lot when I was young and inexperienced in cooking and had only managed scrambled eggs before.

It really starts with the basics, like, "this is a pan and this is a crock pot and "boiling water" means really hot water that is bubbling" and things like that.

After the introduction of basic kitchen utensils, it tells you how to cook simple ingredients (like spaghetti) and after that, simple meals.
I started my cooking (and baking, with the help of its sister book) experience with these two books and they served me really well.

(You also have to take into consideration that back in 2000 the internet was already "there", but the rural areas still didn't have DSL or any fast internet, so going online was slow and it was expensive and it blocked the telephone line, so my parents were often annoyed, also printer ink was expensive back then and there weren't that many sites ^^ of course you could go looking for recipes and cooking explanations, but it was a tiny tiny teensy weensy fraction of what is available today ... plus, everyone was used to rely on books for recipes. So it was extremely normal to buy cook books and learn from them and this one was a very modern approach in modern language, bold colors and a lovely smooth paper, not like the old cook books from my mom ;) )

So anyhow, this is a great book for learning how to cook and I recommend it warmly to anyone who is planning to move out from home or is tired of ramen noodles or just wants to learn some simple cooking and work their way up from there :)

I still has its own place in my bookshelf, btw :)

Just try all the recipes Sabine called sophisticated/clever in the subtitle, they never disappoint.

I was expecting a book that is still more "basic". But I did learn from descriptions and photos. The recipes were beyond where I am.

This book was an inspiring book just to get me back into the kitchen. The reason why i liked this book because it teaches you the basic things in cooking but in a fun way. Also it teaches you alot of different kind of pastas and rice. Which will come in handy if I want to go colonary school for this. But alsoit has great reciepes for home as long as you have the ingredients. Can't wait until I go back in the kitchen.

This book is great for beginers (like me) because it covers all the basics. Not just cooking, but also how to stock a pantry, what to get at the super maket, what time things are in season, what tools you'll need, even the best place to put every thing once you've bought it. And it's got pictures of all the recipes, I love that.

good basic, traditional and simple recipes. The sauces are great. Overall the recipes are to righ for my personal taste, but I found them still interesting. For example how to make your own mayonese.
