AiON Volume 2

Rate this book
Tsugawa Tatsuya just lost his parents in an accident... but he's trying not to let that keep him too down as he starts high school.
While trying to obey his father's final wish for him to become an upstanding man, he ends up helping a girl who was being bullied. Despite her exceedingly cold nature, he just can't leave her alone... which may not necessarily be to his benefit, as he ends up getting wrapped up in a world where things like parasitic mind-controlling bugs exist...

Her work has been published under four different names: Yuna Kagesaki (影崎 由那 Kagesaki Yuna) (professionally published non-pornographic comics, except for Sakura no Ichiban), Yuna Kagezaki (影崎 由那 Kagezaki Yuna?) (same characters but different readings; only in Taishō Komachi Jikenchō Sakura no Ichiban!) Yūna Kagesaki (影崎 夕那 Kagesaki Yūna) (spelled with different kanji) when drawing CG's for PC games, and Yuta Kageyama (影山 由多 Kageyama Yuta) when drawing hentai manga or HCG's for PC games.

So, in my review of volume one, I said I'd read through the other two volumes, because I had them on hand...yeah, that's not happening. For a couple of reasons.

First, I didn't realize at first that this was another late-stage Tokyo Pop series that, like Rat Man, only had three volumes translated before the company folded.

Second: unlike Rat Man, AiON, is really, really dull. It did have some potential at the outset, with its premise of mermaids controlling people on land by way of mind-controlling parasites, but (so far at least), it never capitalizes on it. What we get instead is a milquetoast teenage drama/comedy with only bare lip service paid to what's supposed to be the main premise. It's a lazy love triangle between Tatsuya, Seine, and one of his classmates, with a few characters from Seine's past thrown in, and an excruciatingly slow integration of the mermaid/parasite angle. The characters are too flat for the romance to have any weight, the plot progression is too slow for there to be any tension, and Seine, herself, is too lifeless to carry the story.

That, plus the fact that there are eight volumes that never got translated, gives me no reason to keep on reading.

Volume 1 was largely self-contained. This volume starts a story that will be continued in later volumes. Since I don't have the later volumes, it's difficult to be happy about this.

Daher also eine Kaufempfehlung.

Another interesting instalment - A couple of old school friends visit Tatsuya and the girl gets possessed by one of these aquatic parasites that tries to elevate her feelings of unrequited love and jealousy/hatred of Seine.

Why is it that people close to Tatsuya are so prone to parasites? Hmmm we certainly don't learn from this volume although the point is raised and hints at plot.

Two demons appear and claim to be Seine's guardians - she is not happy about their appearance!

Sadly this is the last readily available volume of this which sucks because it's proving to be really quite interesting. The artwork is cute and the characters are engaging but it is the unique mermaid/parasite/witch plot that I'd love to see more of. We do get the first sighting of a mermaid in this one, but it is only a glimpse.

Hurry up someone like Dark Horse and buy up the rights and republish this - It's got enough originality to make me want to continue reading as well as having the usual tropes - school girl heroine, fighting evil demons, romance with a lonely and clueless boy that it should appeal to genre fans.

I liked this one much better than the first (not that there was anything wrong with it) but the story picks up, you get some peaks into Siene's(?) life. It certainty gets more interesting, what with some little drama enfolding as well. Can't wait for next volume to see how it goes out.

Quick thoughts: Mixed bag. Some interesting new characters and developments… and some annoying ones too. 11/2014

Edit 1/19/16 - Yep, the demons still annoy me. Still in the setup phases. It's a shame this was cancelled in the US before it got really good.

This manga is an interesting concept, but it's delivery is a bit... "meh" at times. With how much I liked Chibi Vampire, I'm so disappointed that I didn't love this one, too.

I suppose it's for the best, since this series was discontinued after volume 2.
