In Redeeming the Rogue by Donna MacMeans, the central plot is summed up nicely by the hero’s best friend (and intriguing, mysterious, delicious sidekick) Phineas Connor: “Have you considered the absurdity of it all, Rafe? That you, a son of Ireland, are traveling to America to impersonate a British minister in order to catch a fellow Irishman?”

Michael (Rafe) Rafferty is an Irishman working as an agent for the Crown to develop a peaceful, political solution to the question of Irish Home Rule. Ranged against Rafferty are the Home Rule League and the Fenians, who killed his parents and who believe violence is the only way to achieve Irish independence. Rafferty, with his network of street urchin spies, is more at home in the rough alleys and taverns of London than in its ballrooms. Unfortunately, the new role he’s been asked to play, as a British diplomat in Washington, D.C., requires something more than native intelligence and rakish good looks.

It also requires someone to play his hostess. And that “someone” would best be a wife.

Lady Arianne Chambers, the daughter and sister of a duke, has lived her whole life in diplomatic circles. Polish, politics, and protocol are in her blood. But like Rafferty, there are secrets in her past and she has very good reasons for wanting to escape London and head to Washington with her reluctant, recalcitrant, delightfully roguish protégé.

As danger creeps up on them, just how far will this couple go to make their pretend marriage look real?

I loved this sensual, sexy, and slyly funny romance. Best of all, it included a solid mystery and interesting plot to drive the story. The historical scaffolding on which Ms. MacMeans builds the romance doesn’t overwhelm the central love story, but provides a solid framework for it. She deftly mixes real and fictional people with a believable tale of danger and intrigue. I was rooting for Rafferty and Arianne from the first pages. My heart broke right along with Lady Arianne’s (yes, 2:00 in the morning, I’m flipping pages as fast I can and crying my eyes out). Just as she did, I fell in love with Rafferty. And of course, because this is romance, the ending made my heart go pitty-pat. Le sigh.

Redeeming the Rogue is the third book in the Chambers Trilogy (book #1 is The Education of Mrs. Brimley and book #2 is The Seduction of a Duke). The only question remaining is, when are we going to get the story of Phineas Connor? I can hardly wait for more!

Lady Arianne has been given the unfortunate nickname of "Cupid's Mistress". Everywhere she goes, people she encounters, fall in love. Just as love is about to capture her, she reveals a hidden family secret to her groom-to-be. That night, feeling she can give herself over to true love, her fiancee comes to her, taking away her innocence. The next morning he quickly announces his recent engagement; to another woman.
Michael Rafferty, an Irish citizen, comes to England in hopes of finding the man that killed his parents. While there, he learns of the mysterious murder of the British Minister in America. The killings and facts are too much of a coincidence for him to ignore, and soon, he finds himself making preparations to travel to America disguised as the new British Embassador. There's only one problem; Rafferty is far from a proper British gentleman. Seeking advice from "Cupid's Mistress" herself, Rafferty's employers employ Lady Arianne to properly teach Rafferty to be a gentleman, and also teach an actress to be his wife and proper hostess.
Lady Arianne realizes she has her work cut out for her, but cannot deny the appeal of the rugged Rafferty who's hair's a little too long. What she finds even more unsettling, is the insane amount of jealousy she feels towards the actress who gets to portray his wife.
Unforeseen events arise, making it necessary for Lady Arianne to step in as Rafferty's wife, and together the two of them will not only try to find a murderer, but also try to find love and passion within one another.
This was my first read by this author, and for the most part, I really enjoyed it. The author's writing was excellent and the dialog and banter between the H/H is witty and engaging. The heroine was someone to cheer for, being that she was so unlucky in love, and the hero was swoon worthy and deliciously sexy from page one. My only complaint about this book would be the lack of love scenes between the H/H. There was plenty of tension between them from the beginning, but there's only one "true" love scene that was over way too soon for my taste. I definitely would've liked to have read more about Rafferty.
Overall, an enjoyable book that left me satisfied at the end. Four solid stars!

Review from www.FreshFiction.com

Life for a well bred lady in Victorian England holds very few milestones to look forward to. What happens when you find out that your breeding is not as great as you and society have been lead to believe? This is the question that brought Arianne’s world down around her when her brothers informed her that the uncaring man she called father was no one to her other then her mother’s husband. The original Duke of Bedford had many faults, including the inability to sire children. The Duchess relied on a local farmer to help her with the duty of providing the Duke with an heir. Now Arianne’s brother, William is the Duke of Bedford. The issue of her parentage can be nothing more then a family secret. That is until she decides to tell the man she believes she loves, the truth before the announcement of their engagement. After proving her love to the Baron in the most intimate way, Arianne is devastated and ruined when the Baron announces his engagement to another woman.

Afraid of the ridicule she will face when the news that she lost her innocence to the man who did not want to marry her, Arianne removes her self from society to hide in seclusion at her brother’s London town home. The opportunity to help discover the murder of a family friend brings her back in the public eye. It helps that she has to travel to the United States and away from the gossips of British Society. The gentleman, if he could be called that, accompanying her is a Irish rogue with the unique skill of blending into most environments. Could this lower class man hold the attributes Arianne craves most in a man?

Redeeming the Rogue is a wonderful story that shows us first impressions are not always what they seem. The story is witty and mysterious until the last page. The reader feels for the social implications of Arianne’s choices and understands why she makes certain decisions throughout the book. Our hero may be rough around the edges but is easy to cheer on as he tries to wins Arianne’s heart. The secondary characters add humor to otherwise serious matters making this an enjoyable read.

The third in the Chambers Trilogy. I loved the first book The Education of Mrs. Brimley but the second The Seduction of a Duke wasn't as good for me. So I wasn't prepared to like this one very much. But it surprised me and I quite enjoyed it. Maybe not as much as the first one but still, I was pleasantly pleased. Mr. Michael Rafferty has a mission to expose a murderer and needs the help of Lady Arianne to teach him etiquette and the rules of society to help him in his role as British minister. Rafferty is irish and not in the same social circles as Lady Arianne, who is the sister of a duke. I found both the main characters likable and enjoyed many of the secondary characters too. The mystery part was very easy to figure out but since this isn't a mystery novel, no problem there. It flowed fairly quickly and basely lagged so no complaints in that area either.

Lady Arianne Chambers, sister to the Duke of Bedford, has helped numerous upper-class couples make happy marriages, but she's never had any luck finding the right man for herself. Since she's a well bred and properly brought up young lady, she keeps her personal unhappiness to herself.

Now she's been asked to give lessons on diplomatic behavior and deportment to raffish Michael Rafferty, a rugged man of action who's on the trail of a murderer who's killed the previous ambassador to the United States. Then those lessons turn into a perilous masquerade, as Rafferty pursues a path that could lead to danger and death.

Can Arianne trust her secrets--and her heart--to Rafferty the rogue?

There is a nefarious plot afoot, and twists and turns abound as Rafferty and his friend Phineas search for the criminal. But the best parts of the story are the love scenes between Arianne and Rafferty. Tender, heartfelt and sexy, Arianne's introduction to the delights of love with her honorable and passionate rogue are a treat to read.

This was my first experience of Donna MacMeans, and I just loved it! I didn't realize this was one of a series until I was done, as her world was fabulous and full of necessary information to be a stand alone, I wasn't lost at all. I am now going to pick up her backlist, though! I was totally impressed.

Lady Arianne Chambers works for her country and volunteers to train the rogue hero, Michael Rafferty in etiquette. Rafferty is traveling to America under the guise of a minister, his mission to solve the murder mystery of Lord Weston, a dear friend of Lady Arianne's. But, he needs a woman to teach him the necessary manners to do so.

This was fun from the first meeting. The two had chemistry and worked hard to ignore it because they just couldn't possibly be together. Rafferty's a rogue, not good enough for the sister of a Duke. It was exciting to watch these two characters grow together. The secondary characters were exceptional - Phineas and Mrs. Summers are best friends to the two, and add great subplots to the story.

An exciting and entertaining read!

Donna MacMeans can sure write one heck of a good historical romance! Lady Arianne Chambers, raised in high society, sister of a duke, is actually more or less, common born, (you'll have to read the book to learn what's up), she's also a matchmaker, but not by choice, just another little quirk she has in addition to her noble upbringing. Enter Michael Rafferty, agent for the Crown, handsome Irishman, a little rough around the edges, who has to assume the role of a diplomat in order to catch a killer.
The story line kept my interests up but so did the descriptions of the clothing, food, etiquette of the era and the surroundings... I can't wait to get started on another of her books! Highly recommend.

A great historical with an in-depth storyline that makes Redeeming the Rogue a "real" book. It has romance and intrigue, with a sexy, honorable hero you can't get enough of. Books can be so short these days, so it's really nice to read a book thats got a jam-packed storyline and you don't get the whole scoop of the story until the very end. Redeeming the Rogue is sweetly romantic even though the characters fight their feelings and don't want to get attached (but of course they do anyway). I loved it! I'm always appreciative of the opportunities that Goodreads and all the great authors that contribute, give us to feed our addictions for books! THANK YOU!!

This is the first book I've read by Donna MacMeans and I really enjoyed it. It's time setting and locations were more unique than most books of this genre (1880's London then across the ocean to Baltimore & Washington DC). The historical information was also appreciated. I wasn't familiar with the Fenians (Irish Rebel group) and didn't know much about the Garfield assassination. I always enjoy learning about bits of history while reading a good romance story.

Only made it three chapters into this one. There's nothing specific I dislike, I think it's just hitting the wrong tone or something. Too dull and formulaic maybe? I know the dialogue isn't grabbing me at all.

The title does not fit the book. Rafferty may be rough around the edges but he is not a rogue and does not need to be redeemed. As well as being gorgeous, he is honest, brave, loyal and trustworthy.

Lady Arianne is a stuck up aristocrat with secrets that make her insecure and wary of men.

Our H/h spend too much of the book worrying that they aren’t good enough for the other, Rafferty because he’s not an aristocrat and Arianna because she is not truly a duke’s daughter nor is she a virgin. It becomes quite annoying after a time.

Arianna won’t marry Rafferty but she will have sex with him. Apparently Arianna doesn’t worry about being an unwed mother. Hmmm.

So what doesn’t make sense...spoilers coming so stop reading if you don’t want to know a little of what happens.

*Rafferty and Arianna weren’t particularly good investigators since they didn’t deduce who was the mole/villain in the household.

*Her companion marries but does not tell Arianna, does not say good-bye, does not have her attend the wedding. She just deserts her. They have known each other for years.

*Arianna turns down Rafferty’s proposal because she’s worried he’ll take her “sanctuary” from her. Why he’d want her property without her is a puzzle. It’s not a castle and seems to be in the middle of nowhere.

*Rafferty blows up his ship to stop a smuggler. But the smuggler’s back is to him and Rafferty has a gun and a rifle. Why blow up the ship and not just kill the smuggler (who also killed his family)? This was just stupid.

*No one tells Arianne that Rafferty survives the fire supposedly so she can make a choice between marrying him and pretending to be a widow. What? He’s not changing his name so how would people think she’s a widow? You have to read the book to understand what I’m talking about.

If you are interested in reading this book you should read the series in sequence to get a feel for Arianne’s past. I just read this book and I felt I was missing things.

This is the third and final book in the Chambers Trilogy. This book focused on Lady Arianne Chambers while the two previous books were about her brothers, Nicholas and William. This was a delightful story that spanned two continents and the action moved along at a steady pace. The characters were captivating and there was a nice touch of humor. I loved it.

Redeeming the Rogue By Donna MacMeans

Grade: C-

“Her words struck him in the gut. She thought he deserved better? He who knew the gutters of the dockland better than the wide streets of Mayfield? The one who sought release by pummeling flesh or hoisting a shovel of coal?”

Lady Arianne Chambers may be known throughout the Ton as Cupid’s Mistress and a successful matchmaker but she herself is very unlucky in love. To escape from the man she thought was going to propose to her, and instead asked another, she agrees to sail to America and act as a consultant for an agent of the Crown, Michael Rafferty, and an actress who must pretend to be the new British Ambassador and his wife. Before landing in America the actress is discovered to have one too many secrets and Arianne must step into her place as Michael’s wife. The role comes too easily to her and she soon discovers that Michael has decided to keep her real marriage or not.

Michael Rafferty may be an agent of the British Crown but he is still fighting for Ireland independence and will stop at nothing to achieve this goal. The Crown soon discovers the man in charge of killing his family many years ago is behind a new plot against England taking place in America. Michael swears to get revenge for his family and will do anything to achieve it, even if her must pretend to be married. With Arianne by his side, he soon discovers that revenge might just have to take a backseat to love and the woman who can heal his broken heart.

This was a very difficult book for me to get through mainly because I really disliked Arianne from the very first page I read. I found her to be very difficult and at many times I wanted to grab her, shake her and yell, “What is wrong with you?!” I couldn’t believe that she did some of the things that she did and that made it very hard to relate to her and care about what happened to her. Her relationship with Michael was very boring and I just wanted so much more out of them then I was given. I found the way Arianne acted through their relationship even more difficult to understand and about half way through the book I sadly stopped caring.

I did enjoy the fact that a Victorian era romance took place in America because it so rarely happens. Reading about American high society was very fascinating and it was the only thing that kept this book from being a DNF. I thought most of the book was very predictable and couldn’t keep my attention at all. I kept waiting for a great plot twist and much to my dismay it never happened.

Redeeming the Rogue was a big disappointment for me especially since I love historical romances. I felt that so much more could have been done to make this book great and to make the characters more likable. The lack of suspense and chemistry between the characters made for a very slow, boring read. I even found the title to be unfitting because I never felt like Michael was a rogue at all so why would the book be titled that. Again, I had very high hopes for this book and sadly I was highly disappointed.

So, the third book I've read from this author had some of the similar problems in Book 2,but still, I enjoyed the book and would have enjoyed it more if it had been standalone.

Arianne Chambers is not in either of the first two books, just referenced as traveling. I wonder how they could afford to let her travel in high style when the purpose of the second book is that William is so broke, he takes the first American heiress who'll have him. She's so absent from the first two books that there's no way anyone would pick this up, eager to learn more about her. So there's that.

Second, again with the dropped plot threads. The backstory with the Baron is good and adds to her character, but there's a scene before they leave London, where the Baron shows up with his new fiancee trying to tell Arianne that it's not his fault, it wasn't his choice. He seems genuinely unnerved, but it's never discussed again. The reader is then told the Baron probably just wanted to sleep with her and discard her, so it's a little disjointed.

I also have issues when an author can't decided how to refer to her characters. Michael Rafferty is rarely Michael, but he's usually Rafferty, and then even Rafe, and the character uses all three, even if his point of view. Pick one and stick to it.

That being said, here's what works. The setting of Washington, D.C. is intriguing. I've found so few really good historical romances set in the United States (with reason, I suppose) and they're usually Westerns, and even they're a scarce resource. I really liked reading the political intrigue, and using the assassination of Garfield was quite good. I liked the relationship between Arianne and Michael, and hope that Phineas gets his own book, I don't know yet if he does. I liked the use of William, as well. The story was quite good, if a little lacking. I think there needed to be a bit more development in Michael's background, connecting the villain to him. I understand he killed Michael's family, but I'm not sold on it.

It's a good, solid book whose flaws do not detract from overall quality too much. I just hope the author gets it together with her continuity and character/plot development.

Redeeming the Rogue by Donna MacMeans
Historical Romance -Aug. 2nd, 2011
4 stars

Michael Rafferty is an Irish agent working for the British Home Office. He is on the hunt for his family’s killer - a man named Basil Toomey. Toomey is part of a dangerous group called Fenians, who believe that violence is the only way to free Ireland from the Queen. Toomey has been spotted in America and Rafferty has to pose as a British diplomat visiting Washington, D.C. so that he can catch Toomey once and for all. The trouble is Rafferty is no nobleman and needs Lady Arianne Chambers. Arianne is the sister of a duke. She is needed to pose as his wife to further his credibility. Arianne agrees to this crazy scheme because she is desperate to escape England. Her ex-lover, Baron Von Dieter, used and discarded her. Now she has discovered he is callously arriving in London with his fiancee. Unwilling to be publicly humiliated, Arianne chooses to travel to America with Rafferty, not realizing that she has jumped from the frying pan and into the fire...

In the beginning, I felt quite lost when the author introduced us to Arianne’s brothers. I felt that I was floundering just because I had never read the previous books in the series. Thankfully, as the story progresses, it becomes easier to follow the main plot since it focuses mostly on Arianne and Rafferty. Arianne started out hoity-toity and stiff, but the more you read about her, the more you realize that she’s vulnerable and unsure of herself, hence her attitude. I like that she slowly lets her guard down with Rafferty, which gives more time for their relationship to develop. I felt for Arianne and really disliked the evil baron who took advantage of her. Rafferty is so patient and considerate, especially during the sea crossing when there was a big storm. The way he held her the whole night, comforting her was really, really sweet. I ended up rooting for them to get together!

Insightful and complex, this is a Victorian romance with a lot of heart and a good dose of intrigue!

I received this book through the Goodreads FirstReads program.

This historical novel is set in the late 1900s and takes place in both London and Washington, D.C. Irishman Michael Rafferty is an agent for the Crown and must travel to Washington to pose as the British Ambassador. While there, he will investigate the former ambassador’s death and attempt to track down Irish conspirator Basil Toomey, who killed Rafferty’s parents and brother in a terrorist attack. Rafferty’s unmarried status presents difficulties, as the society ladies in D.C. won’t be able to call him unless he has a hostess. Enter Lady Arianne (Anne) Chambers, sister to the Duke of Bedford, who will train an actress to serve as Rafferty’s hostess in an attempt to polish the Irishman’s rough exterior. But when Lady Arianne has to step in at the last minute to serve as Rafferty’s hostess, will the two be able to resist the attraction they’ve been fighting since they first met in London?

I very much enjoyed this novel. The historical setting is perfect, and I love how Ms. MacMeans incorporates the Garfield assassination into the text. I usually read regency romances, so this was a nice break for me, and I liked reading about the different societal norms that Anne taught the hero. I found it really intriguing that an ambassador would have to be either married or have a close female relative who could serve as hostess. The politics involving the Irish were really interesting to me as well, since I know little about the late 1900s.

I would have rated this book a bit higher if it were not for the fact that it drags a bit and the romance lacked sparks. The characters seemed to spend a loooooong time crossing the Atlantic, which I’m sure is historically accurate but had my mind wandering a bit during that section. I could understand Lady Arianne’s motivations for why she acted as she did in various situations, but I wasn’t as interested in her as a character as one would like in a romance novel.

This was the first book I read by Donna MacMeans. I loved it! The only complaint I had was the book was too short, lol.

The hero Michael Rafferty and the heroine Lady Arianne Chambers come from two different worlds. In the upper crust of London Society status and a title means everything. Lady Arianne is sister to the Duke of Bedford a daughter of the Old Duke that kept her away at school. Lady Arianne was brought up with all these fine rules on how ladies and gentleman are suppose to behave.

Michael Rafferty is a agent for the Crown he's on the trail of the man who killed his family. Michael is asked to go to Washington D.C to fill in as the British Minister because the former one was murder. Rafferty's enemy has escaped to America and Michael is sure somehow the death of the British Minister and the man he's chasing is connected in someway.

Lady Arianne is also called by the Crown to help with the British Minister's murder. Lord Henderson a friend of Arianne's ask her to help teach an agent who is to portray the British Minister the proper ways to act in society. He would also like her to act as hostess to the new minister as his wife. When Arianne finds out who the new minister is she absolutely refuses to be his hostess. She thinks him to be rude without any sense on what a gentlemen should be. She talks them into using an actress and she will train the actress in all the ways a lady is suppose to act and be as a hostess in society.

Arianne has her own shame and needs to leave England and London before the news of her scandal leaks. Once it does she will never have another call from society. She will take herself off to live in the country for the rest of her days. She calls it Sanctuary I call it a self made prison. Rafferty and Arianne start out with fireworks and end with a bang also.

I love how Donna MacMeans uses actual factual pieces of history in her books. And involves the story around this event. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This one was quite a ride... Michael Rafferty is an Irish agent for the British Crown, tracking down Basil Toomey, a violent "Fenian" (rebel Irish) assassin who seeks Irish independence through any means, and who was responsible for the death of Rafferty's parents. Evidence has turned up suggesting the man is in America-- Washington, D.C., in fact, and possibly responsible for the murder of the current British legate to America. But instead of sending him as an agent, Rafferty's bosses are sending him as a legate, himself-- a role for which he'll need a woman to pose as his wife and act as diplomatic hostess.

Enter Lady Arianne Chambers, refined lady and sister to a duke. Lady Arianne has just had some unpleasant revelations of her own and is anxious to escape London and a possible approaching scandal. Although she doesn't think much of the thuggish Mr. Rafferty, she leaps on the opportunity to serve her country far, far, away in America, and accepts the duty to train up an actress to be Mr. Rafferty's diplomatic "wife."

But there are plots within plots. There's a spy in their legation who means to see Rafferty fail at any cost. And there's a much stronger attraction between Miss Prim-and-Proper and Mr. Dark-and-Dangerous than either of them want... or can resist. Of course, she's far too fine and noble for the likes of him... or is she?

I really enjoyed this book. The supporting cast was delightful (Phineas deserves his own book some day), and the plot was cleverly woven into the real intrigues of the day. I loved Lady Arianne's "game"-ness, how she continually surprised Rafferty with what she was willing to endure. The combination of Rafferty's pride and class-consciousness was a touching soft spot.

This author's definitely going on my to-read list.

When Arianne finds out the late Duke of Bedford was not really her father, it explains his moodiness and anger toward her and her brothers. But she realizes this revelation will probably have some very negative repercussions on her life, and she’s right. She lost her virginity in Vienna to a man she thought intended to marry her, but when the blackguard found out the old Duke wasn’t her father, he dumped her for someone else.

Michael Rafferty intercepts a ruffian with a message for a lady in a green dress, and Rafferty ends up insulting Arianne. He’s being sent by the Home Office to America in the guise of a diplomat to investigate a murder, but he needs a hostess to make him appear legitimate so they hire an actress to play his wife. Having lived her whole life in diplomatic circles, Arianne goes along to give social and etiquette instructions that will make them seem like believable diplomats. But when the actress proves not only unreliable but also traitorous, Arianne decides to take her place as his wife, despite the negative impact such a decision will have on her reputation.

Arianne and Rafferty smolder! The sexual tension is thick and I really like them together. Despite their seeming social differences, they’re a lot more alike than it appears. Donna MacMeans is a skilled author who weaves a tight and engrossing tale of tenderness and intrigue. I liked that a good part of the book took place on the ship or in the United States; it’s a little different than what I normally read and it was a pleasant change of pace. I’ve really enjoyed all the books in this series. Redeeming the Rogue has some very interesting historical details and historical romance fans will love it.

Murder, mystery, intrigue and double cross; now add a handsome rogue, a damaged heiress and politics and you have a book that you can’t put down. This story has just about everything a good novel would have, while adding enough sexual tension that even the reader will be screaming come on already. (FYI if you are into the romance novels that have sex throughout the book you will not be pleased, if you are more into the tension and the story then grab this book!)
I was pleased with this weekend read. I picked up the paper back because; well, hey I am a girl and I like a little unrealistic love story from time to time. I should have known by looking at the book jacket that this was not just your typical romance. It looked like it was well read. I can tell you that it has been and it is great collection piece to my collection. I think you should at least give it a try…. Not fifty but a great adventure.

Captured my attention from the first page!

This was a wonderful romance that captured my attention from the very first page. Rafferty was an awesome hero and I absolutely adored everything about him. The fact that he wasn't a titled gentleman like so many historical romances only added to my interest. I enjoyed the interactions between Rafferty and Arianne and could feel the chemistry between them. Enjoyable story with interesting characters and one that I highly recommend.

This hitstorical romance kept me turning the pages as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I adored Michael Rafferty and found him crush and swoon worthy. Sigh...

Even though this is the 3rd of the Chambers Trilogy, I really didn't feel as if I had missed out on anything - it reads like a stand alone. I enjoyed this book and am going to put it back in my TBR pile. I am going to look for the others in the trilogy to read them from beginning to end.

This is a great read for those who love the true history behind historical romances, whichI do. The romantic couple, Arianne and Michael Rafferty, are good for each other and strong in their own right. The murder mystery elements of the plot are also a plus. This book is closer to a 4 1/2 than a 4, well written, and I'd read more by Ms. MacMeans.

This book is a little hard to rate. There were parts that I felt were really good and parts I just honestly skimmed over. It was kind of a mixed bag. I feel like it was as a whole a decent book, but I would have like it to have been better.

I received this book as part of a First Reads giveaway.

It was very hard to put this book down! The intrigue, the characters, the action! Everything kept me wanting more! I haven't read anything by Donna MacMeans before, but I will definitely go back and read her other books!
