As the title SMART SCHOOL TIME RECIPES: The Breakfast, Snack, and Lunchbox Cookbook for Healthy Kids and Adults makes clear, this eBook is mainly aimed at parents who want to create healthy but quick breakfasts and lunches for their tikes. However, it's great for anyone who never seems to have enough time in the morning before they rush off to work or for employees -- especially teachers like me! -- who need to eat in a rush or at their desk. Not all of the recipes are golden, but that's true of any cookbook -- even my two favorites, Twenty-Minute Menus: Time-Wise Recipes & Strategic Plans for Freshly Cooked Meals Every Day and Eating Well Is the Best Revenge, both by Marian Burros.
The recipes are geared to the über healthy -- only one recipe contains real milk, most of these recipes are vegetarian or vegan, there's very little in the way of even whole-wheat flour, and the like. (That's not surprising as the author and the other contributors tend to be dairy- and gluten-free.) However, all are easily adaptable to how you and your family likes to eat. Can't stand the thought of spelt flour? (Count me in that club!) Then you can easily switch to whole-wheat or even all-purpose bleached flour. The thought of grinding blanched almonds to make your own blanched almond flour when you have so many papers to grade is making your skin crawl? You can easily substitute whatever you normally use. The same goes for vegan mayonnaise, quinoa pasta, sea salt, soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, garbanzo bean flour, tofurky, and the rest.
It's got a lot of great healthy recipes that would appeal to families that don't subscribe to any special diets or aren't even particularly health conscious: Frosted Cherry "Pop-Tart" Pancakes, Pear and Raspberry Breakfast Crumble, White Bean Dip, Lentil Carrot Stew, various bulgar salads, Chicken and Avocado Salad, Take-Along Taco Bar, Veggie Packed Sloppy Joes, Corndog Muffins, and more. And anyone who has eaten at P.F. Chang's will love the P.F. Chang's China Bistro Chicken Fried Rice.
Some of the recipes are really money savers, too: Making your own instant oatmeal packets, taco seasoning, pesto, Honey Mustard Chicken Strips, and Caesar salad dressing.
One caveat: Smart School Time Recipes does not have a table of contents. However, you can make your own by bookmarking the beginning of each section and then highlighting the titles of the recipes you'll be using. It's not as good as a real table of contents, but, considering the eBook is free, you can't really expect the production values of a book publishing house.
Especially at the price (free), you'll want to add Smart School Time Recipes to your Kindle or eBook reader.
I am so impressed and excited about so many of the recipes in this book. Many of them are allergen free or slight modifications can be made so that they are allergen free. I'm excited about making muffins and a new variety of French Toast for my son, who has many life threatening allergies. I've got 14 pages worth of bookmarks so far, and I'm just barely half way through reading the recipes.
Also, the recipes are healthier than the average fare, incorporating fresh veggies and fruits in quick and kid friendly ways, which is what attracted me to the book in the first place, along with the allergen free ingredient lists.
I got this for my Kindle, although I honestly didn't think I'd use a cookbook from a Kindle. But, for travel, who knows- it might come in handy.
I am also eager to check out the various blogs and websites from the many people who contributed recipes to this compilation. I may just have to take an evening to checking into the websites that are listed.
We made Pink Hummus tonight and it was delicious. We did laugh all during dinner, as it was a remarkable shade of magenta, which is not normally a food color. Beet color goes a long way. It was a little sweeter than we usually eat hummus, so I think the next time, I'd limit the beet to only 1/4 of a beet and see how that goes.
Eager to try the muffin recipes and will hopefully try the French Toast this weekend.
Wait.. This was for kids? I found a handful of recipes I would try, but many of them are vegan and sugar free. There's nothin wrong with that lifestyle, but wasn' what I was looking for. I was expecting quick easy healthy foods kids would enjoy, mainly for my husband who spends most of his day at work. I doubt that kids would even want to try half if what's in this book. It should be titled smart shook recipes for vegan children. It would have captured the right audience.
Pros:
If you are catering to someone in your household with food allergies I would recommend this book because it has MANY alternative recipes, that I imagine are normally difficult to find.
Good variations of food: muffins, smoothies, soups, snacks, lunches etc
Cons;
Lots of muck in the front of the book you have to flip page after page until you actually get to a recipe I think I was about 10%-11% in before I saw food.
Some of the recipes I don't think would cater to kids, especially picky eaters, or picky husbands...
for people who aren't vegan you probably won't have many of the ingredients, or even like most of the recipes.
I decided to get this book (which was a free download from Amazon) because I believe that school lunches (provided by the school system) are horrible! I've had this mantra since my own kid was in school in the 1990s. I also think kids will eat healthy foods if they are given healthy meals on a consisten basis.
But this book disappointed me. It had foods that are kid friendly, but I'm not sure the recipes were appropriate for packing in a school lunch. (I'm a teacher, so I do know what the kids face with lunch--time constraints, no way to heat/refrigerate foods, eating lunch with a HUGE group and the constrainsts of that, etc.) The recipes were very nutritional, but I don't think necessarily what could be eaten easily during a 30 minute lunch period that is actually 20 minutes. And, for average America parents, some of the ingredients weren't necessarily something you can find easily, especially if you don't live in highly populated area.
Good idea, good recipes, but not what can easily eaten at (or even prepared for) school lunch.
I added this book to my iPod because I needed some packed lunch inspiration. It was exactly what I needed! The kids will appreciate the delicious lunches and I'll enjoy knowing that they are eating something healthy. And did I mention it was FREE??
The recipes are allergy-friendly and include milk, wheat, egg and nut-free foods. I plan to keep this on my iPod for many months :)

This book is free. Despite that, it is an awesome book. This is not just a few recipes and their variations. The author covers her subject fairly comprehensively. Recently, I found out that I am allergic to dairy. I had been incredibly frustrated with the information that I'd found on the web; until, I stumbled across this book which led me to the author's web site and also her dairy free book. I felt that I had to disclose that information for 2 reasons. 1. I'm now very biased positively regarding this author. 2. I have a dairy free viewpoint. Sooooo, it is not clear to me whether this book would be all that helpful to those without food restrictions. However, the author, IMHO, is very even-handed in her writing. By the way, this cook book isn't Dairy Free specific, but rather the author does include alternatives to dairy for most if not all the recipes.
I plan on trying several of the recipes in the book. And, I made the Tofu Cottage Cheese today. It was my first venture in tofu cooking, and I'd been tentative and fearful of tofu. Her recipe made it easy. The tofu cottage cheese was only ok as cottage cheese but awesome as a veggie dip.
This is a free ebook that I downloaded to my Kindle. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but hope to try the Gluten Free Morning Glory Muffins soon. I bookmarked quite a few other recipes. Not all of the recipes are gluten-free nor dairy-free, but most can easily be adapted. Many of the recipes are vegetarian. A great, free cookbook!
I probably won't use any of these recipes as written -- too many specialty ingredients that don't appeal to the tastes of my family -- but there are several pages of suggestions at the end that have inspired me to try new techniques for packing weekday lunches. At the price (free), I certainly can't complain! Plus, the writing voice is uniformly enthusiastic but never cloying.
This book is full of healthier recipes to make for lunches. I particularly liked one recipe for chocolate muffins that were made with oats so were whole-grain. If it's whole grain then it's good for you!
I was looking for some ideas for school lunches for my boys. This book has a lot of great options. We already tried the corn dog muffins (go ahead and wince with me!) and they were a hit. Best of all, the book was a free download.
Smart School Time Recipes by Alisa Marie Fleming Opening notes ttart this book and how the author got the idea to write this book. Contributers are listed and which portions they contributed to, designer of cover and editors and their sites. Intregient notes as some recipes are nut and dairy free. Each recip chapter starts with a title, summary and the recipes contained in this chapter. Each recipe starts with a title, author credit and website, SOME contain a medium size color photo and summary of the dish. List of ingredients and you should be able to substitute for your healthier dietary needs: low fat, low sodium, low sugar and fresh vs canned items. Some have a LOT of items, be sure to have them all first. Directions are given and there is NO nutrtional information. Recipes do NOT always start at the top of a new page. Servings are listed at the end. Lots to choose from, depenidng on your allergies this would be a great book to keep handy. Great ideas and yet more great tips using different appliances.
Nothing in this recipe book-and I do mean absolutely nothing is good- as a kids snack or lunchbox idea. Horrible recipe book for kids lunches etc. Shame, Shame <--- in case you didn't get it, it's a GOT reference.
Most. These are impossible to use if your child is in primary or nursery schools the amount of nut products or thermos flasks is difficult for any one under the age of 8
Loads of vegan and gluten free recipes to make for your little ones lunch boxes. I really did like the suggestions and although I already do quite a lot of these, I do like picking up more ideas! Enjoyed this book by this author and her friends.
At first I was really excited, but ended up disappointed. My child did not like many of these recipes, plus, they were difficult for packing into a school lunch. Many ingredients cannot be found in a small town grocery store.
This cookbook would be an especially helpful resourse for families with food allergies or other dietary restrictions. Many of the 125 recipes are sans dairy, eggs, peanut products or gluten. It may be challenging to find some of the ingredients in a community where there isn't easy access to a health or specialty foods store. The recipes tend to have quite a few ingredients and would take more preparation time than many families would be willing to devote to food preparation on a regular basis. Most of the recipes appeal to an adult palate; but,it is debatable how many of the prepared items would be eaten by elementary school-aged children in lunch rooms. The book has lots of photos of delicious looking food. It also includes references nutrition websites.
This book is simply Ah-Maz-inG!!! I downloaded it on my iPhone for fun but I gotta say, it's great! The pictures. The food alternatives that suits almost anyone. The health values. I can tell that a lot of work was put into it. If it was a real book I would buy it with no hesitation. I'm considering printing this. Healthy and fast foods!
This book was not good for me. It had too many ingredients that I don't EVER use. Plus the recipes were all a little time consuming. I would imagine this for a college student looking for healthy recipes, not for a mom making school lunch for her kids.
Great ideas, lots of good tips, all super-healthy!! and the variety! A must-have book for anyone who eats at the office and/or has to pack lunch for their kids everyday.
Kids (and adults) will never be bored again when they open their lunch box. There are a variety of recipes to choose from, and best of all, they're all HEALTHY!
