Many strength trainers, athletes, and dieters are operating under a strange mythology created by fad diets, uneducated advice, and personal superstition. With her book, Kleiner gives her reader the common-sense facts. Carbs aren’t bad. Calories aren’t the enemy. Food is fuel. She teaches her reader how to plan a diet that will help him/her reach individual goals of less fat, more muscle, even longer endurance. Using science and research, Kleiner guides the reader through each nutritional need and how to get the most out of food and workouts while explaining the science behind each mineral/vitamin/protein/carb in an easy-to-understand way. She also boils down many research studies to educate the reader on what supplements are actually proven to enhance performance, which ones are pure hype, and which ones haven’t been proven or disproven yet. Through reading and utilizing the information in this book, a reader will be able to dispel the myths, make informed decisions about his/her dietary needs, avoid spending unnecessary money on unproven supplements, and also stay away from dangerous risks.
• Kleiner served as a nutritionist for the Seattle Supersonics and continues to consult professional athletes and write for several nutrition and athletic publications.
• Promotes a healthy and natural approach to cutting fat and building muscle while guiding the reader away from crash/fad diets and unhealthy practices.
• Assumes the reader is strength training on a regular basis
• Written for the everyday person as well as the serious athlete—very adaptable to any reader’s needs, assuming that reader is exercising regularly.
• Differentiates between separate needs of men and women as well as the needs of vegetarians.

I read this book when I was between the ages of 14-16 almost a decade ago. This book assisted in many ways the current training regimes I have and the current eating lifestyle I embrace. It taught all you need to know about nutrition and fitness in one book. The book was legible for me at that age which makes it an easy and good read. Its an excellent place to start if you know nothing about building muscle or eating right - this book conquers above the fad diets and books that most tend to embrace with open-arms.

Kleiner put together an exceptional book here. I've been studying and putting fitness into practice for years and continually enjoy honing in on knowledge. I've been wanting to enhance diet and nutrition so I sought books on the subject. This book was a treasure--exactly what I was looking for. Susan points to academic studies in many points throughout her book while her writing is easily digested (no pun intended) and can be easily read by any audience. It is certainly not dry and boring. I knew a lot more than I thought I did about nutrition but this brought me to a new level. I love the little hacks I got from it. For example, adding a high glycemic carbohydrate source with my post-workout protein supplement to initiate an insulin response that helps shuttle the amino acids into muscle tissue.

If you want to live a healthier, more energetic lifestyle and improve your successful outcome of fitness goals, read this book.

Based on what you find online, people consume as much junk health advice as they do junk food, which is why I sought out a real book by someone with credentials and experience. Power Eating is full of helpful advice. I like that it can be applied as general principles or one can get very precise using the formulas and timing. Kleiner also maintains a practical outlook, encouraging that most nutrition should come from food while showing when and how supplements have a place.

Informative, but rather scientific. Some of the research is already outdated. It promises you that you'll be able to make your own meal plan by the time you finish the book. However, due to the vast amount of information you are more likely be just lost and end up with a set of recoomendations of what to eat/not to eat.

Good intro to food-as-fuel perspective of nutrition. I have bit more appreciation for carbs as a training tool even if I'm still not sure how to eat more of them. The meal plans filled me with horror (low fat subway sandwiches? *dies*) I can probably eat that much fish tho :p

A well-researched guide to achieving your physical and performance goals through smarter eating and supplementation. Kleiner does a deep dive into the macro and micronutrients involved in building, repairing, and maximizing muscle mass and performance, in addition to going over most of the major supplements, including their benefits, effectiveness, downsides and macronutrient combinations and ideal recommended intake to get the most out of them in a safe and healthy manner. My nutrition IQ definitely increased reading this book and it can be used as a reference with a pragmatic application for recommended supplements and meal plans provided in the book.
