note: Shannon Drake and Heather Graham are pen names for the same author.

Drake researched her own family's roots in Scotland all the way back to the Middle Ages for this new series, which explores the history and lore of the 12th-century war of the Highlands.

In the days when Scotland lay under siege, King David sought loyal warriors who would fight with their blood and hearts. Waryk de Graham, the greatest of these fighters, was knighted Lord Lion, but his honored position as Scottish chieftain came with a price: a Viking bride who had sworn to resist him in body and spirit.

Daughter of a Gaelic noblewoman and a Viking warlord, Mellyora MacAdin ruled her ancestral lands like a Valkyrie—wielding a sword and bowing to no man—until she found herself an unwilling captive to Lord Lion's compelling power.

Now, torn between defiance and devotion, Mellyora must decide where her loyalty truly lies...and discover the secrets of her husband's heart.

Setting: medieval Scotland (King David)

This was a pretty solid HG book. I'm a suker for enemies to lover trope, and nobody does that better than HG. Unfortunately, she forgot the love part in this story. The MC fights the whole book, and then suddenly, they are madly in love with each other 🤷‍♀️.

Still, I liked the story. I just wish there had been some tender moments between the couple.

Sidenote: vikings didn't wear horned helmets. That idea came from a 1500s painting. Bad research HG!

This is your classic medieval romance. Set in Scotland in the early 12th century, it is a time of political unrest as Vikings, Scots, & English are all vying for power. The hero, Waryk de Graham is Scottish King David's champion. The heroine, Mellyora McAdin is the king's godchild. King David decides it would be a politically correct maneuver to arrange a marriage between these two, as the land Mellyora would bring into the union (Blue Isle) is prime seaside property ...ideally situated to strengthen the kingdom, as well as the perfect place for a powerful warrior such as Waryk to maintain. The problem, however, is that Waryk & Mellyora are each in love with someone else. Waryk understands and resignedly accepts his fate, Mellyora does not. She defies the king's wishes because she feels she can preside over her home and her people without a man, and if necessary, will share the keep with a local warrior she loves. No way is she going to marry a "toothless, decrepit old Norman", as she imagines Waryk to be. Of course women had absolutely no control of their destinies in 1127, yet Mellyora gives it a shot anyway. She acts defiant, belligerent, uncontrollable and attempts several ridiculous escapes that suggest treasonous behavior. You have no choice but to despise her. Waryk has no choice either. Although her antics are childish, they are dangerous...and Waryk is continuously forced to come to her rescue, several times narrowly preventing war.

As is inevitable, Waryk and Mellyora slowly begin to trust each other, to see the good qualities the other possesses and eventually fall in love. Their love is put to the test, however, when Waryk is called away by the king. He must ride to Tyne and warn the English warrior who resides there, Peter, about an upcoming attack. Problem is, Peter's sister also resides in Tyne...the beautiful widow Elenora who not only has been Waryk's mistress for many years but was the woman he had planned to marry.

I was in the mood for a good medieval romance so Come The Morning certainly worked for me. The narrator, Sanda Burr, is a master of Scottish (and other European) accents and her convincing portrayal of the characters brought them to life. The story was rich with history but not overdone, which surprised me because the other novels I have read by Heather Graham (aka Shannon Drake) were also steeped in historical facts yet I found them quite boring early on. By most rights, the book was worth 5 stars; however, the heroine's awful attitude & blatant disrespect for the crown was a deal-breaker for me, and I couldn't give it more than 4. If you're a better (wo)man than I and can accept Mellyora's actions considering the time she lived and the decisions she was forced to accept, then you've got a gem here.

Remember Come the Morning the next time you feel that medieval "urge" to read/listen about half-naked, hard-bodied alpha men...the fiercest of warriors by day and the most awesome of lovers by night. *raises eyebrows Groucho style*

2.5 stars! I had high hopes for this one after enjoying another historical romance from this author (well her other penname Heather Graham). I was excited to get to this when I saw the author researched her own family history and was inspired by that to write this book, but it was just such a letdown in the end.

This one sounded so good and it did initially start off well, but the main chunk of this book just dragged for me and felt like nothing was happening. The last half did pick up somewhat but it didn’t make up for the rest of the book. The heroine was also so hard to get behind or enjoy when she does the same things over and over. This is a medieval set, Highlander romance or takes place in Scotland. A lot of talk of Viking heritage and the heroine willing to pick up a sword to defend herself. Just was way too long, and felt longer than it actually was. Such a miss for me sadly for the romance too.

Could’ve easily been 5 stars if not for the h’s former mistress hanging around the MC for the entirety of the book! I found her presence irritating.

Come the Morning
By Heather Graham

Can someone please just shut this bitch up? All the heroine does is argue and fight and run away and cause more trouble. Here’s a woman living in 12th century Scotland who disrespects the king and her betrothed and just about everyone she comes across yet somehow, everyone shows patience and allows her to continue her shenanigans.

I could not stand the heroine, Melyora MacAdin. She was a spoiled brat who thought she should get everything her way but it was her constant bickering and arguing that drove me batty. It took up most of the book. The only reason I kept reading was because the author is extremely knowledgeable about Scottish history and it was fascinating. I learned a ton from just reading this story. It kept me from ripping the imaginary pages out of my e-reader whenever Melyora opened her mouth.

I did like the hero, Waryk de Graham. I liked how he handled Melyora. He didn’t over react and let her make herself look like a fool with all her idiotic schemes. He was a true hero.

I finished the book and decided to read the added excerpt from the next book in the series before I actually purchased it just on the off chance that this author would make another heroine so shrewish. Boy, am I glad I read it! It saved me time and money. Heather Graham obviously thinks impulsive and spoiled argumentative women are what makes a strong woman but it just made me want to slap the brat. It ruined what could have been a good book.

I won’t be buying another Heather Graham book.

1st in the Medieval Scottish Series A Worthy Read!

This is the first in a series of historical novels of the Graham clan (see list below). First released under the pen name Shannon Drake, it’s set in 12th century Scotland during King David I’s reign. Waryk de Graham is 14 and on the battlefield with his father and uncle, both of whom are slain. In a heroic feat, he manages to rise from the assumed dead and save the remaining Scottish warriors and kill Renfrew, the leader of the Norse forces. For this, he is knighted by the king, dubbed "Lord Lion," and promised future prizes.

Ten years later after Waryk has faithfully served the king and won many battles and his reputation has spread far and wide, the king is of a mind to finally give him the promised reward. Prompted to move by the death of Adin, once a Viking conqueror who then became truly Scottish and loyal to King David, the king gives Waryk the Blue Isle—a wondrous holding—and his daughter Mellyora MacAdin, who is known as beautiful and a brilliant swordswoman.

Mellyora, unaware of all this, upon her father’s death, asks the king to allow her to rule in her father's place and to marry the McKinney who is a laird in his own right and lives on Blue Isle. But the king wants a powerful warrior defending Blue Isle and he wants to reward Waryk.

Waryk has had a mistress he has loved for years and wants to marry her. But he will bend to the King's will if only to gain the lands. So Mellyora, headstrong and courageous, after many attempts to escape, is finally resigned to marry Waryk (or suffer the loss of her lands). Neither likes the other and so begins the story of their tumultuous love.

Graham’s writing is wonderful and she serves up non-stop action. The romance is compelling. And, this historical is also based on her own family history of the Graham's. The historical elements are well done and Graham even includes a timeline in the back for those of us who love the history.

Our heroine and hero do have their issues. At times, Mellyora, who was supposed to be a brilliant strategist, could be quite stupid in falling into Waryk's traps and he was at times less than honorable, even mean.

I recommend the whole series!

Meh. I was looking forward to this because it was Scottish romance but...ugh. The heroine is soo annoying though I appreciate her attempts at controlling her destiny. The hero is decent, until he pretty much rapes his wife, but she sort of wanted it, but sort of didn't, so it's okay??? Not sure how that's supposed to work. Will probably not be reading any more in this series.

4.5 stars ⭐️ Come the Morning is enemies to lovers, medieval romance. Mellyora was ready did not want to Waryk de Graham, but King David decreed it as a way to award Waryk for service as her hand in marriage comes in a fortress and land that is invaluable. Mellyora fought Waryk on land, on a boat, and kept running away until she decided it would be best to marry him. However, a villain wants Mellyora for himself and Waryk dead. This book was adventurous with a passionate love story. Mellyora and Waryk were strong characters. The story was engaging despite some of the flaws that come with an older historical romance. Heather Graham can write a good enemies to lovers story!

Uzun zamandır beklediğim bir yazar Shannon Drake'in kitabını okudum sonunda.

Veee gelelim kitabımıza;

Kitabın ana teması orta çağda geçiyor gerilimi aksiyonu bol bir roman. Aşkı da orta çağa has sert.

Mellyore aynı zamanda Kral David’in vaftiz kızıdır..

I found this to be a fascinating story. I wanted to stay up all night and finish but, alas, my mind and body had other ideas. Drake certainly did her homework regarding this historical period and the way she wound this love story around the political unrest of the time was terrific.

Waryk de Graham is one of King David's greatest warriors. So great, that he has been knighted Lord Lion. Waryk came to be in the King's good graces during a battle that found his father and several family members killed. He wakes amongst the dead, severely wounded and happens to see the enemy take hold of the remaining warriors that were hiding in a small house nearby. He crashes that party, saving many men. The King sees his bravery and decides to take Waryk, a young boy at the time, under his wing. Fast forward to where Waryk has recently fought in battle and the king has summoned him to court.

Mellyora MacAdin, is the daughter of a Viking warlord. Her father, Adin, has suddenly died and she has been summoned to see the King. She is of the belief that she will go see the King and he will agree to let her rule her lands. Many have told her this won't happen, but she thinks otherwise. She has fallen in love with Ewan and parts from him vowing to return and they will be together forever. Not if the King has his way.

Waryk and Mellyora are thrown together when King David insists they marry so he can continue to hold political access to Mellyora's father's land. Neither of them are too happy about the arrangement, especially Mellyora. Having never met Waryk, she imagines her betrothed to be a decrepit old Norman barbarian, when, in fact, he's a gorgeous Scot. Her different ways of trying to escape her pending nuptials are hilarious.

Come the Morning had several spots in the book that I really couldn't put it down because I was so curious with what could happen next. I'm an avid reader and it's not very often that I'm utterly taken by a story. This one's a keeper.

Bu kitabın yorumuna nereden başlayım bilemiyorum yayınevinin berbat çevirisi ve editörünün kitabı kontrol etmeden baskıya gönderip bizim sırf imla hataları, yazım hataları, eksik kalan bağlaçlar vs. yoksun kalmamıza neden olmasından mı? Yoksa yazarın absürd bir İskoç karakteri oluşturmasından mı, emin değilim. Yayınevi kitabı öyle iç içe geçirmiş ki hangi paragrafta kim konuşuyor birbirine karışmış. Hoş olmamış. Hele "Aye" kelimesini çevirmeden direk koymaları saçmalığın önce gideniydi, öyle çevrilmeden konsaydı Diana Gabaldon'un Yabancı serisinin kitapları bu kelimeden geçilmezdi... Gelelim karakterlere.

The best part of this book is the dust jacket. It totally got me, as in I thought that this was historical fiction, when really it's more of maybe a romance...or something. Everyone in this book is incredibly annoying and unlikable, just completely obnoxious. And so repetitive. I wish it had ended with a big viking raid in which they all died. Nice cover, though. Too bad it's not on a better book.

Maybe it's just because this is a very old book from this writer, but I was horribly unimpressed with the writing. The story and historical facts were good, but holy crow the word she was used so frequently that I wanted to rip the pages out and burn the book. I had a hard time getting through this one

I read #4 in the series first and thought it weighted by the historical and overshadowed the romance. Come the Morning was balanced and rich with history and romance. Very well written, descriptions that made you be in the story instead of reading it. Both books I read over a couple days, may take a breather before #3.

Being an avid reader of historical fiction, this book didn't disappoint. Realistic characters, a warring nation and the intersecting cultures of Normans, Picts, Scots, Angelo Saxons, English and Vikings. Based on historical data which brings the characters and the events to life. Marriages arranged for rights to property and politics. The plight of women and their expected roles to play at the hands of men. Very interesting in detail and the medieval way of life. Glad this book has been made available.

Kedves? Semmi esetre sem. Gyengéd? Mint a lópokróc. Szenvedélyes? Csak abban az elhatározásában, hogy megszabaduljon tőle."

"Kibeleznek, felakasztanak, lófarokra kötnek és felnégyelnek?"

"– Ugye, segítesz nekem? – suttogta Mellyora.
A férfi tenyerébe fogta a lány kezét.

Mellyora beleharapott a kezébe. – Találkozunk a pokolban! – sziszegte dühösen.
Waryk elmosolyodott.

"– Anne – mondta Waryk –, menj vissza a szobádba! – És mit csináljak? – kérdezte aggódó tekintettel. Waryk összeráncolta a homlokát. – Menj aludni!
– Nem fogok elaludni, annyira aggódom...
– Akkor menj a szobádba és aggódj!"

"– A szabadságáért és a szeretőjéért küzd – vágott a szavába nyersen Waryk. – De abból nem lesz semmi."

"– Véresre karmolom a hátadat.

Waryk hirtelen felnevetett. – Kedvesem, szerintem te nem vagy tisztában az
engedelmeskedni szó jelentésével."

"– Szóval lebuktam! – mondta Mellyora halkan. – Be akartam fejezni a történetet.

Kedves? Semmi esetre sem. Gyengéd? Mint a lópokróc. Szenvedélyes? Csak abban az elhatározásában, hogy megszabaduljon tőle."

"Kibeleznek, felakasztanak, lófarokra kötnek és felnégyelnek?"

"– Ugye, segítesz nekem? – suttogta Mellyora.

Yikes, this is a quick DNF at chapter 3. It's like reading a school report, all of the history being thrown at you. I know it's a historical romance, but I was hoping for less of a focus on the history. My eyes literally glazed over, skidding down the paragraphs of saxonvikingscottishenglishpicthighlanderrrrr until I got back to plot. And the repetition! I cannot say how many times someone mused about how there was unrest because the king died and his daughter and nephew were fighting for the throne, but it was at least 5 times. Everytime, it was mentioned like it was new information to us. The first conversation between the king and the heroine was torture. His inner monologue was like a broken, skipping record: "My Goddaughter is sexy. But she COULD betray me, because she's a Viking, and Vikings are dangerous. But she's really lovely and good prize to give away. But she is a Viking, and they are dangerous. But her mom was so-and-so and she has such pretty hair... but she also COULD be plotting against me because she is a VIKING!"

AAARRRGGHH!

Reading further reviews, seems like the heroine also gets annoying. I don't know how anyone got past that start to find out..... Especially because King Henry is dead, and there is unrest, because his daughter Mathilda and his nephew are fighting for the throne. 😑😑

Hard pass.
