Andrea Kane - Wrong Place, Wrong Time

I’ve an ongoing problem with Andrea Kane books, I like the idea but the execution not so much. This story is a perfect example. This is my fourth book by this author and even though I generally like the plot and the characters, I struggle to finish the book.

The plotline is really fine. It's interesting, maybe not memorable, but complicated enough to keep you in suspense. Okay, not really… It could keep you in suspense if not for the way this book is written. Totally boring. Nothing happens. At least, it seems so. This is because even dramatic events or twists and turns are somehow written boringly, slowly and without imagination. All the time you think nothing is happening, even if it's not true. And this is my occurring problem with this author.

Unfortunately, this also applies to characters. If I think about it more deeply, I will say that they are fine. The situation in the Montgomery family can even be considered interesting. The characters are not stupid and generally do nothing extremely foolish. But again, they are constructed in such a boring way. They are average, unremarkable. They don't annoy you, don't make you roll your eyes, but they are bland and unexciting. There is nothing special about them.

Is this a big problem? Big no, but certainly a problem. Although the story is good enough that I wanted to know how it ends, it was not easy to force myself to finish it. I lost interest and was easily distracted. Here, I must mention that the ending surprised me. Maybe it didn't surprise me a lot but at least a bit, which is always nice after reading numerous books of this genre. It seems to me that the author has a problem with building tension and an atmosphere of danger, which makes her books seem missing an action.

There is also a romantic thread in the book. It is a kind of Cupid's shot, love at first sight. Usually this motive annoys me and I find it unreliable. But in this case everything was fine. Maybe a bit too fast but I didn't have any major problems with it.

After all, I like the Montgomery family. I wonder if the other books are about Devon siblings, it would be fun. I will probably read the next books in this series, but not necessarily immediately.

I'm not going to write a plot summary since so many others have already did it. I really enjoyed this book. I didn't know anything about show horses or competition jumping/riding. I like the idea of getting a wealthy family together and throwing in some mystery. I enjoyed how the main characters interacted and felt like you got a good picture of them. I've never read anything by Andrea Kane but I believe I will pick up some more of her romantic mysteries. I didn't like how the ending wrapped up in like 20 pages. I felt it left some things unexplained and wanted to find a happy ending for all the characters but other than that I would recommend this book to the romantic mystery readers out there.

When a wealthy business owner and horse breeder is murdered and a woman is missing the Montgomery family is out to find the answers. Sally Montgomery disappeared after finding her boss murdered in a cabin they were staying at. Her family will do anything to find out who the killer is. A bit of romance added into the mix of suspense will keep you turning the pages.

Meh. The reason I wanted to read this book is that I have #2 and when I realized the 2nd book was book 2/2 I figured I should read the first one. Now I'm not sure if I'm going to read the second book.

I found WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME ponderous, plodding, and borderline boring. I didn't care for any of the characters except for the animals. Even baddies can be interesting and fascinating characters but all the humans were single-faceted, almost cookie-cutter types. At one point I honestly didn't care WHO the perp was, I just wanted to find who it was so I could finish the book. And I *did* very nearly give up about halfway through the book.

I don't even want to go down the path of the plot . . . . . . . . . . . yikes.

I loved Kane's historical romances so it was disappointing to find her transition to thrillers / mysteries didn't match that quality.

When Sally Montgomery accepts Frederick Pierson's invitation for a weekend getaway, she has no idea, she'd end her Saturday on the run from a killer who's just bashed Frederick's head in and torched their cabin. Concussed and scared, she knows there's only one man she can turn to, only one man to make sure to catch the killer before the killer catches her—her ex-husband, ex-NYPD detective Peter "Monty" Montgomery.

Monty's gut is telling him there's something fishy going on in the Pierson clan, so in order to protect Sally and catch the killer, he recruits his oldest daughter Devon, a veterinarian, to infiltrate the family, but neither of the two expected both Frederick's nephews, cousins James and Blake, to set their eye on Devon. And while James is easily dismissed as self-centered and fake, it's Blake that catches Devon's eye and her emotions. But is Blake's interest real or just a diversionary tactic to keep Devon from poking around too much?

Yet another winner from this amazing author. And intense, fast-paced (faster that the previous books) page-turner with a perfect blend of romance and suspense. What I like in her books is the fact, the heroine (and subsequently the reader) isn't entirely sure about the hero's motivations and allegiances at the beginning of the story. It keeps you guessing and it keeps you wondering.

The second thing I like about her books is the maturity. Not only of the plots themselves, which are always well-researched, well-paced, and perfectly executed, but of the characters. The main characters (that end up forming the main romantic couple) are incredibly mature and grown-up; they actually communicate, they talk and listen, they argue, and they compromise. But they communicate, which results in a more mature storyline and romance without the unnecessary (and sometimes downright annoying) miscommunications, misconceptions, and conflicts for conflicts sake. There always is a conflict at the beginning of the story (thanks to the before-mentioned ambiguity and doubts about the hero's motivations), but they're always promptly resolved rather early on, leaving the plot to evolve and progress without any redundant ballast.
This story was no different. The heroine, her father, and this particular reader, all had their doubts about the hero, doubts that were put aside by a single honest conversation, and weren't brought back for the rest of the story.

The romance was solid, and although you could say it was rushed, having developed in a little more than a week, thanks to the narrative flow, and the complexity of the plot, it seemed much more time has elapsed. No feelings of haste there.
The two main characters were nicely "layered", and complimenting each other well, thanks to some of their similar traits (family loyalty, for example). They worked well together individually, and as a couple, making the romance believable and organic.

The suspense was also well-done, even though I didn't actually get the motive for the initial murder. It was a tad too convoluted, but that "hiccup" aside, the entire suspense sub-plot was intense and fast-paced, and the mystery kept me engaged, entertained, and guessing as to who all the players were. Who was the bad guy? Why? Who was using whom and to what purpose? And that final action scene, with the running against the clock, it certainly got the blood pumping.

I loved it.

The lineup...

Sally was married to Monty (Pete) (retired NYPD)

Children:
Devon (DVM large and small animals )
Mary (a college student)

Sally is about to get back on the horse and try love again with a great guy. They plan a weekend get away, he goes really far away while she goes for an early morning walk. He is dead when she comes back, gets knocked out and wakes up in a house fire. Now on the run from police and everyone else she is in hiding while Monty and Devon try to figure out the situation.

The real suspects are the Pierson clan who are rich and well placed. Blake is the guy that is going to get it all, but the cousin is Grandpa's fav and potentially an Olympic champian. All they need is a better horse, and just a bit more talent. Fighting against time, father and daughter join forces in a great plot to save the family, both of them.

There is a romantic twist to the book and away we go.. Another great series for Kane.

Happy Reading!

A PI is on the move after his ex wife is discovered missing from a deadly crime scene. Pete Montgomery quickly brings his daughter, Devon in to help with his investigation to find his ex missing wife, Sally, after it is discovered that Sally was on a date with a wealthy man and found him dead.
The book follows the mystery and procedural that both Pete and Devon take to find Sally and go into a wealthy family's home and business to investigate who murdered the man and to unravel any secrets that the family have. This was a slow pace read but I was thoroughly invested and I couldn't figure out who was behind it. There is a romance subplot but I found myself addicted to the story and trying to figure out who was behind it all. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kate Udall and I thought she did a good job. Not a lot of deep tones for male characters but it didn't bother me.
This story is great for fans of mystery, procedural, and romance then check this one out.

A very special thanks to Tantor Media for the gifted copy.

3.5 stars. Written in 2005, the book begins as Sally Montgomery overhears a conversation in a barn that seems to indicate Frederick Pierson believes something criminal is going on at the Pierson company. Sally exercises horses for the Piersons and, when Frederick asks her to spend a weekend at a cabin to get to know him better, she agrees. While she is out hiking, she returns to find Frederick has been killed. Someone knocks her out and sets fire to the cabin which she barely escapes. Her ex-husband Monty is a retired cop turned private eye and he sends her into hiding until he can unravel this mess. The book tells the story of Monty and his children's efforts to find out what secrets the Piersons are hiding and why Frederick was killed.

This book is a solid one for those who like romantic suspense. There's quite a bit about horses and equestrian events. Also, Devon Montgomery is a veterinarian so dogs have an important place in the story.

Sally Montgomery works for the Pierson family, exercising their horses. Frederick Pierson, invites Sally to a cabin for a weekend, and she decides to go. Sally is deep into memories at the cabin and decides to take a walk. When she returns, she finds Frederick dead and she is then knocked unconscious. She awakes to a fire in the cabin and barely escapes .Sally quickly realizes that the killer might know she survived and makes a run for it. Sally calls her ex husband, cop turned private investigator Pete “Monty” Montgomery and Monty asks their daughter Devon to help him save Sally. They must determine who tried to kill her while keeping her whereabouts a secret. Devon is a veterinarian by trade, but decides to help her father. The mystery portion of the suspense is multi-faceted and well done. The story has multiple plots making it difficult to determine who is guilty of what crime. All in all a good story and will read book #2

Our cruise ship was floating around in the Atlantic Ocean and I had finished reading the books I brought with me on vacation. So I visited the library on board. The majority of the books were not in English so I didn’t have much to choose from. I would not say that this book was gripping, compelling, or edgy, which were words used to describe the book on the back cover. I found it to be an easy read and it certainly did not keep me awake at night wondering who done it. I didn’t connect to any of the characters, but they were likable. I felt the romance part to be predictable and rushed. But if you were looking for a quick read, this one fits the bill.

Considering I picked this up on kindle thinking it was a 2022 book by that same name, but was indeed a book written in 2005, it was well worth the quick read. It held my interest despite being very dated as far as the technology used to help figure out the crime. I even laughed out loud at one point when Monty was protecting the honor of his adult daughter. It was just so darn cute! I could have easily laid it down when I realized I wasn’t reading the book I expected but am glad I didn’t. The story was a good who done it, with two cute romance stories backing up the plot.

For a romantic thriller (which is not my go-to genre), I found it pretty entertaining. I enjoyed the witty humour many of the characters displayed. Also, there were a few lines of Spanish in the book which was a pleasant surprise as I found I could read these few lines on my own and it was a nice practice.

This murder mystery is full of family drama with a bit of romance thrown in. Two murders in quick succession only add to the drama. There are lots of potential suspects but the one who actually did it took me by surprise.
