I’ll get my grumbles out of the way first: the hero, Guy de Beauchamp, is an actual historical figure—he was a key player in the execution of Piers Gaveston, Edward II's first boy-toy.

Anyway, I’ve mentioned before (frequently) that Henley takes liberties with her history, but here we go again. In this book, Guy’s two wives both died under suspicious circumstances, which is why, when he approaches our heroine’s guardians and asks to wed her (which she also wants), the guardians conspire to keep the two apart.

In actual fact, Guy married (maybe) twice. IF he was married to Isabella de Clare, that marriage was annulled. His second wife, Alice de Toeni, bore him seven kids, and survived him to marry again.

Seriously, if you’re going to use a historical figure, why totally change his story? If Henley wanted a guy with a shady past, why not invent one and let the real people live out their real lives as background characters?

And (this is evidently a convention of the genre in the day, so I blame Henley less than the editors) there's a lot of TELLING in this one, a writing style that doesn’t help to build a connection between the characters and the reader.

I'm done grumbling now.

Marjory de Warrenne (who, I’m happy to report, doesn't seem to be a historical person, tho Henley chose the name wisely) is in love with Guy, and she wants to marry him. He half seduces her, then tells her he’s going to ask her guardians for her hand. Her frenemies tell her he’s just sayin' it to get under her skirts.

He does ask her guardian and her brother but they lie to both of them, telling her that he never asked, and telling him that she chose someone else. As a result, they kinda hate each other, and she marries a nice guy who has no interest in her as a human being, and as a bedmate is so inconsiderate that it hurts. She cares for him but, although she tries she never manages to love him.

When she’s widowed (no spoiler here since we know all this from A Year and a Day), Jory takes up with Robert Bruce for awhile.

When that liaison necessarily ends, Guy happens back into her life and decides this time she’s not going to get away. . Oh well.

The story goes on from there, with a murder mystery and the various conflicts with Wales and Scotland, and events leading to the ascension of Edward II. There’s some good stuff there, despite my grumbles. 3.5 stars.

After reading "A Year and a Day" (the first book in the de Warenne series), I was excited to read "Infamous" believing it would be good, even if not quite as good as the first book. I was wrong. The first 60% of the book takes place prior to the end of "A Year and a Day" and there is a fair amount of repetition from the first book (and I mean, WORD FOR WORD repetition!). Even the material that occurs before the beginning of "A Year and a Day" is so predictable because of what we learned of Marjory de Warenne's life in the first book.
Not only did I find it boring because of the repetition and predictability, but she also ruined all the traits that made Marjory (Jory) such a likable character in the first book (brave, reckless, independent, carefree, world-wise, and, most of all, selfless). Her brother Lynx and her uncle John are also made to look bad in this book (especially the uncle). The way she feels about certain circumstances (I won't reveal what as I don't want to give spoilers, but specifically the circumstance Jory discovers at the end of the first book) is a complete turn-about in this book. Even her friendship with Princess Joanna is altered (and not in a positive way). Some of the things Jory does are just not believable (again, I won't go into details, but, if you read this, remember this comment when you get to the point where you read the note Jory sends to Guy early in the book -- I rolled my eyes at it).
Perhaps this book would be better if someone read it without having previously read the first book in the series. This book could probably stand alone since so much material is repetitious.
I am giving it 2 stars (and only going that high because I've read worse books). I might have been able to enjoy it more if I had never read "A Year and a Day," but, if an author is going to write a book series, one should expect to be able to read all the books in the series without characters changing personalities, huge chunks of material being repeated, or being able to predict over half of the book's plot. It is even worse because I have read the book cover for the last book in the series ("Notorious"), and so what little surprise might be left is already heavily hinted (not that one doesn't expect the hero and heroine to end up together in a romance novel).
Though I usually enjoy Virginia Henley's historical romance novels, this is most certainly NOT one I would recommend. Even though I have read the first book in the series twice (and likely will again - I gave THAT one 5 stars), I will not be reading this one again...ever. I am still going to attempt the 3rd book in the series, since I already have it. Hopefully, since that book involves the children from the first two books, there won't be as much overlap!

This author drives me crazy, I am typically mad and hating her books most of the way through wondering why I read her then some way she manages to wrap it up to my satisfaction, but it is always rough going to get to the HEA. I cannot read her books back to back typically there are months in between, but I will give credit where credit is due, she is an amazing author.
I really liked the h at the beginning then she became “ho” ish and I didn’t like her as much. I liked the H the whole way through although there were large parts of the book he was not in. Plot 5 (1-10) steaminess 7.5(1-1-10)

Marjory de Warrene and Guy de Beauchamp

Ms. Henley writes beautiful romances about real people and real events in history. She deviates from reality for the sake of the story, but the events provide a timeline.

Jory and Guy fall in love and want to marry, but they are both betrayed by Jory's uncle who has arranged for her to marry another. Believing that Guy never offered for her, she accedes and marries Humphrey de Bohun.

Five years later when she is widowed, she longs for Guy, but he is still angry that she rejected him and married another. Thus he does not know, and neither does Jory, that her uncle lied to them both.

Much historical detail is woven into the story about the reign of King Edward I and his campaigns of war.

If I had proofread this book, I would have corrected 9 errors.

Still love Virginia Henley and its been a long time since I read this book. Wish it had happened faster, I didn't care for the Robert the Bruce but I understand that sometimes Virginia's characters really have to deal with an ordeal before they get their hearts desire. But the end was a happy ending to me and that is what I expect from all of my romance books.

So much of this book is a repeat of "A Year & A Day." Too long, weird characters, not worth the read.

I think it is best for all concerned if I stay away from historical romances from now on, unless I get a specific recommendation. HOW IS THIS THE MIDDLE AGES, PEOPLE!? Religion is barely mentioned, dialogue shifts unpredictably between vague attempts at sounding old-fashioned (but nothing even close to Middle English, obviously), I don't even know where to start on the history (there's some random editorializing about Robert the Bruce, etc.) and cultural attitudes about ethnicity, gender, sexuality, etc. are stunningly anachronistic unless it suits the plot, at which point we get SURPRIZE HOMOPHOBIA (which was also suspiciously modern in many ways), and also conniving mystical Welsh people. Also, every time there was a graphic sex scene I began to wish there wasn't, because the prose was so excruciatingly bad. "Honeyed sheath," for reals!? This even made it into Amazon's list of "statistically improbable phrases." Prose also suffered from a serious case of telling and not showing throughout. Additionally, I hate plot devices which depend on characters one portrays as intelligent doing *really dumb things* like writing (because everyone knew how to write back then! Especially teh womens!) ambiguous notes instead of ones that actually convey necessary information. In conclusion, I'm not sure why I finished this one, and if I hated it this much, anyone more familiar with this period in history is likely to start throwing things.

Larger questions about the genre this book raised for me:
- What do people look for in historical romances? I was thinking that the ambiance might be more interesting than the contemporary ones, since I enjoy historical fiction (and tend not to be as interested in novels which are just about everyday 21st century people). And I figured medieval Europe had fewer chances of being horrifying than any of the ones on the list that involved, say, the word "sheikh". I suppose for some people get the fantasy they want out of the historical trappings without any pretense at accuracy, but for that to work for me, you'd have to set it in some sort of fantasy alternate universe instead. And have better prose, etc. Are there historicals that do this?

The first part of the book was a good and quick read. However I was disappointed with the second section of the book because she basically cut and paste the section from "A Year and a Day" book. Nothing was enlightening nor revealing about the character maybe the relationship between her and Robert Bruce. Overall it was disappointing. The last section was drenched in drivel and poor writing. I couldn't wait until the book was over because they remind me of the junior high school relationship where love was all-around and encompassing with oozing gushiness! I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes and the only thing that keep me reading was because I was so close to finishing the book. We all know how it ends. They end up together! Sigh... was that a spoiler when it gives it anyway in the second section?

Historical romance. Another of my friend's culls and I totally understand why. Both main characters were temperamental and clueless, the dialogue was clunky and it's quite oddly plotted for a romance - the two main characters meet in the first 100 pages, but then the heroine spends the next 150 pages trapped in a bad marriage and the hero hardly appears at all.

novel de warrene 2

Lady Marjory de warrene, lady in waiting & sahabat princess joanna, jelita & anggun & has a look of an angel.
siapapun ingin memilikinya apalagi posisinya pamannya, john de warrene, earl of surrey & kakaknya, linx de warren.

marjory yg belia penuh dengan keingintahuan, namum satu2nya laki2 yg mampu menarik hati marjory adl guy de beuchamp, earl of warwick, widowed, 2x. kehilangan istri 2x menimbulkan rumor tak sedap.
pd guy mereka mengatakan marjory lebih memilih humpfrey de bohun, future earl of.....

namun ambisi robert menghalangi kebahagiaan mereka.
robert ingin meneruskan perjuangan kakek & ayahnya, menjadi crown king of scotland.
satu2nya cara robert dapat mencapai ambisinya adl menikahi ellisabeth......, puteri earl of....
hal yg dilakukan robert begitu marjory mengatakan usulnya itu.
ya ampun katanya cinta sama marjory tp gitu dpt jalan lain dia langsung membalikkan mukanya dari marjory & menikahi ellisabeth.
cowoq macam apa pula itu???!!!!!!!
mengatakan beribu2 kata cinta pd marjory tp ternyata begitu mudah meninggalkan wanita yg dicintainya.
robert tidak mencintai marjory, dia mencintai dirinya sendiri & ambisi2nya.

ditinggalkan robert marjory kembali patah hati. kali ini dia bukan hanya patah hati tp juga kebingungan karna percintaannya dengan robert menghasilkan anak.
marjory hamil....
& kebegoan marjory dia diam aja demi cita2 & ambisi robert.
stupid marjory.

guy langsung melamar marjory yg akhirnya malah kena damprat jory xixxixixi kasiannya guy.
namun saat marjory tau kebohongan sang paman & kakaknya soal pinangan guy marjory langsung melamar guy.
namun sebelum menikah marjory mengatakan keadaannya yg sebenarnya pd guy.
namun ternyata masalah belum selesai sampai disitu.
karna perbuatan meg, wanita walsh yg ternyata menyukai & ingin menjadi countess of warwick sedikit demi sedikit menanam keraguan dlm hati jory & bahkan ingin menggugurkan kandungan jory.
jory yg salah paham mengira guy ingin menggugurkan kandungannya langsung pergi meninggalkan guy.

sayang sekali.........
robert pun bahkan tidak berusaha menghubungi jory. menanyakan kek apa maksud perkataan guy "jory mine, scotland yours."
tidak mungkin guy, suami jory, ngotot bertemu king of scotland seorang diri tanpa alasan pasti yg kuat or hanya karna ingin melihat mantan kekasih jory???

bagaimana perjalanan panjang jory tetap membawanya kepelukan cinta pertamanya.
bagaimana cinta guy yg sangat dalam pd jory hingga menerima jory apa adanya bahkan mencintai bayi dalam kandungan jory walaupun itu bukan anaknya.
hhhhhhhhhhh tante VH bagaimana ini???????

I have finally read the second book from the series, and damn, this one has more body count than I can handle, if I am honest! Also, while I am aware that some characters here are based loosely on actual figures of the past, I am glad that I can overlook this aspect of the novel because I am not quite familiar with their roles in history in the first place!

Interestingly, Marjory's love story is divided into four parts, giving us full access to her journey to settling down with her one true love. I will not give too much away, but somehow I am pretty conflicted with how things turned out for her. And while I keep telling myself that it was a different time back then, I was not getting the feels I keep looking for every time I read a romance novel--a historical romance novel, at that. Despite that, I still give huge props to Marjory as a heroine as she is truly someone you should reckon with. Even if this one took me quite a while to finish (the drawbacks of reading them in physical form, I hate to admit), this has been an okay read, as I have mentioned earlier. I will read the last book soon to find out how this series ends!

I was so looking forward to Jorys story after reading A Year and a Day but this was ridiculous. I was hoping for more with her and The Bruce even though it was clear they couldn't be together. Then having read about her relationship with Guy before her marriage and after when they were reunited I wanted to throw the book, there was no resolution or moments to rebuild there feelings.. just a oh I haven't seen you in years but I'm still head over heels for you let's pretend nothing happened...and again so so much war politics to skim over.

Infamous

Edward I was a warrior king that gained much land fur by his reign. However, Edward II was a weak boy king that thought only if his own pleasure. The Earl of Warwick was reputed to be dark and dangerous. That he could be tamed by a mere woman is questionable.

It had been a while since I had read a really cheesy romance novel. And this one reminded me why.

I'm glad I got this from the library, rather than paying money for it. It was an easy, forgettable read that I'll probably only remember because I'm writing this review about it. There were some good things about this book, namely the interweaving of actual history with fiction. Many of the characters in the book, the hero included, were real people and although a quick web search shows major deviations from the reality of the time, it was still very interesting to see how the historical figures were portrayed and woven into the story.

Guy de Beauchamp, the hero, really did live and really was the earl of Warwick, and is actually best known for his part in the death of Piers Gaveston, the "favorite" of King Edward II. But in reality he had only two wives, and the second one outlived him, while in the book, of course, she died young and he married a third time, to the fictional Marjory de Warrenn. Before marrying Guy, Marjory also has an affair with Robert Bruce, just before he is declared king of Scotland. And her first husband, Humphrey de Bohun, was also a real historical figure. Other historical figures who played major roles in the book included Gilbert deClare, Princess Joan (here called Joanna) and her second husband Ralph Monthermer (whose real story is portrayed in passing in this book, but is fascinating and romantic enough for its own book), and even King Edward I and II.

These brushes with history made the book interesting enough to keep reading it, even when the ridiculousness of the actual writing were enough to make me want to throw the book across the room. Honestly, if I read one more reference to Jory's "silver-gold tresses" I was going to scream. And the dialogue at times was really pretty awful and not at all natural-sounding. We were constantly reminded of everyone's names, titles, and descriptions (such as one character who was never mentioned without the word "irascible" before his name).

Another issue with the book is the sort of "sweeping" plotline. It spans about 5 years' time, and the main couple are apart for most of that time. They meet in the beginning, fall instantly in love, are kept apart by her family who thinks him an unsuitable husband for a virginal 18 year old, and she's married off to someone else... then they only see each other sporadically over the next 4 years, and never speak to each other until they suddenly are thrown together just after her affair with Robert Bruce has ended. After waiting so long for them to get together, I expected a real battle of wills. They had plenty of reason to be angry with each other, since each one thought they had been betrayed by the other, when really it was her family who had lied to both of them. Instead, they argue for a couple of pages, they find out the truth, then they rush into marriage. It was very anticlimactic.

However, I guess I knew better than to expect Shakespeare when I picked up this book. I was looking for something easy and trashy, and this was definitely successful in that way. An interesting note is that, according to the listing at the top when I found this book here, it is the second book in a series about the deWarenns. But nowhere in or on the book itself is it mentioned. The preceding novel is not listed or mentioned anywhere in this book, although the events in it are recounted. Furthermore, there is no note from the author in this book about the real historical figures, which would have been a nice touch. Maybe those things are present in the hardback, but it sort of put me off that they were not done here.

This was my first Virginia Henley book, and I can't say I'm inclined to pick up another.

This historical Romance is set in King Edward I time in England and is the second book in the series (I never listened to or read the first book). I thought it had a good plot and wonderful characters.(Guy de Beauchamp, the Earl of Warwick, was an actual historical figure) .

Headstrong lady-in-waiting to the Princess, Marjory de Warenne has the looks of an angel.
But she's given her heart to the devil: the notorious Guy de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, a man feared on the battlefield-and in matters of seduction. When her guardians choose a more appropriate husband for her, Jory can only dream of her gallant knight, the Earl of Warick, until their passion are rekindled when history overtakes them both.

I certainly enjoyed this Audiobook and would like to listen to other works by Virginia Henley.

On l'apprécie énormément.

I loved it !!
As good as the first one !
Jory is still the same character, will-mind, strong pirit and open minded. Even she is a beauty, she's a sweet, nice, kind and caring personn. We can see that with her sister in law and her lady-in-waiting even with a first husband.
I love Guy ! I am keen on him !!
I'll read the next one !!

This book is not your everyday romance. For starters the heroine is not only a widow but she is pregnant by a pervious lover!
It's not everyday when you read a historical romance and the heroine is sexually experienced. That really added a different flavor to this book.
A good read. Cheesy at times but very good.
