Third in the Chintz 'n China cozy paranormal mystery series and revolving around Emerald O'Brien, a tea room owner, and her two kids set in Chiqetaw, Washington. It's fall.

My Take
It's a psychic story for sure that involves Native American myths, which does provide a bit of a niggle, which is Galenorn's treatment of the Klakatat monster. It was annoyingly obtuse for the first half of the book. I'm curious if Galenorn will incorporate the visions Em receives from the lore-keeper?

The overall theme is doing the right thing with a minor one about not judging a book by its cover. As for Galenorn's first person protagonist point-of-view, it's handy that it's from Emerald's perspective, as it keeps us informed of all that's going on around Em and her thoughts and emotions.

That George is somethin' else! What. A. Loser. How does one go about learning how to be a psychic? Sounds fake right off the bat. And he is so incredibly obnoxious!! I think Galenorn is introducing Maeve as a new character in the series, and she sounds fascinating, especially in her acceptance of Emerald's abilities.

There are some interesting events in here relationship-wise — Murray has several surprising surprises, lol. And Em gets some back when Andrew returns. The kids have their own character arcs that advance and retreat. Their father's character (in all ways *grin*) creates dramatic moments. Sutton's character arc is dramatic as well...hoo, boy.

I'm also curious about that statement that Em will "wail on his head for spacing out on us". So, is Em going to cry and cry and cry or is she planning to hit Jimbo? And Galenorn may want to check those Murreys sprinkled in there.

So, it was a little bit annoying but a whole lotta cozy and warm with me looking forward to reading A Harvest of Bones .

The Story
Medium Emerald O'Brien looks into the disappearance of a missing biker — only to stumble upon his dead body in the woods. The police want to believe a wild animal killed him, but Emerald and Murray are convinced the killer has a human nature.

The Characters
The divorced Emerald O'Brien runs the Chintz ’n China Tea Room where she reads the tarot. Her daughter, Miranda "Randa", is fascinated by astronomy. Kipling, Em's nine-year-old son, has second sight with a crush on Lana. Nanna is Em's ghostly grandmother who taught her how to work folk magic. Rose is Em's sister. Grandma McGrady. Nigel is their orange tabby, Noël and Nebula are the other kittens from Samantha's litter. Tenzing is what Em names her new car.

Miranda and Kip's dad, Roy, married Tyra who is having a baby. Em doesn't hold out much hope for their marriage.

The Chintz ’n China Tea Room is...
...located in Chiqetaw, Washington. Cinnamon and Lana work for Em. Larry makes all the food the tea room sells. Darren is the father of Cinnamon's children...and in jail. Elvira Birmingham; Mrs Purdy Anderson and her daughter Trisha love Em's readings; Maeve Elliston raises llamas and sells blankets, caps, and sweaters made from their wool; and, Tansy Brewer are some of the customers.

Captain Joe Files is Em's ten years younger boyfriend and in charge of the EMTs ( Legend of the Jade Dragon , 2). Margaret Files is Joe's retired aunt. Leticia and Iris are friends of Margaret's who play cutthroat pinochle. Roger White works with Joe at the firehouse.

Jimbo Warren is a biker and self-proclaimed mountain man who became friends with Emerald in Legend of the Jade Dragon . Sugar is his chopper. His grandma had also worked folk magic in the Louisiana bayous. Roo is his three-legged dog, Snidely and Whiplash are his cats, and Billy and The Kid are his nanny goats.

There's a biker enclave in...
...Klickavail Valley run by Clyde where things are turning up missing. Terry-T is Clyde's right-hand man. Scar, a.k.a., Scott Anderson, a good friend of Jimbo's, lives with his pregnant old lady, Traci, in the enclave. Bear is something of a recluse in the enclave.

Chiqetaw PD
The warrior-like Detective Anna Murray is Em's best friend and has two pet boa constrictors, Sid and Nancy. The lazy, paunchy Coughlan is head of detectives and hates Murray; Laura is Coughlan's wife and Stryker's sister. Chief Tad Bonner is a good cop and supportive of Murray. Deacon Wilson (with a wife and two kids) and Sandy Whitmeyer are a couple of the best cops on the squad. Bob Stryker is the coroner and medical examiner.

Cathy Sutton is the local pain-in-the-butt anchorwoman at KLIK-TV who painted Em with a target. Tom is her deceased husband. In this particular case, she's aimed her cousin, George Pleasant, who is interning at the TV station, at Em. Royal is Cathy's cameraman. I think Jack Sullivan is an anchorman.

The Klakatat Monster is the lore-keeper and a local legend protected by the Warriors of the Mountain.

Harlow is the second of Em's best friends. A former supermodel...and pregnant...she recently closed her spa. She's still working for Professor Abrams from Western Washington University as a telecommuting research assistant. James is her supportive husband, a professional photographer on a shoot in Africa. Horvald Ledbetter, a retired security guard, is one of Em's neighbors. A prolific gardener, he's been spending a lot of time with Ida Trask, a local legend, still shook by her experiences in Legend of the Jade Dragon . Both babysit Miranda and Kip as needed. Some of Miranda's friends include Lori Thomas (the only one who is a schoolmate) and members of the Chiqetaw Stargazers Society, which includes Naomi French. Sly is Kip's best friend...and not a good influence. Rasta is Sly's bizarre-looking dog. White Deer is Murray's aunt, a Native American medicine woman.

Tina Gaylord is a yoga instructor. Margie Wilcox owns the Corner Street Café. Davida owns the Choco-hol Bakery. The Barry Boys and the Don Wan Kodo Drumming Group are local bands. And Don's wife makes the best egg rolls. Ingrid Lindstrom writes a gossipy advice column, "Buzz About Town". Mrs García de Lopez works for the school system and will be making the final decision. Andrew is Emerald's regretful ex-boyfriend, back now that his movie has been scrapped and Zia Dane, an actress, has dumped him ( Legend of the Jade Dragon ). Suzy Warnoff and her cousin Tyler made a dubious purchase; Farrah is Suzy's mom. Wilber Perry deeded his house (now used as a meeting hall) and his land to the city for a park, Perry Field. Ian Hannigan has been released from jail. The Bread & Butter House helps homeless people and hosts a food bank.

Back in the day
Luke and Jake Wiley were brothers and prospectors who kidnapped Indian girls to be their brides.

The Cover and Title
The cover is dark with a central focus on one of the O'Briens' cats who's exploring the contents of a box that includes Em's new scrying ball. There are blue flowers scattered on the brown wood floor with a couple of white flowers standing up. There's an info blurb at the very top in lime green while the same green is used in the author's name just below that. A testimonial is in a much paler green to the right of the aster-like white flower to the right of the cat's head. The title is in white at the bottom of the cover.

The title is more metaphysical in terms of Murder Under a Mystic Moon, but just as effective in rendering death.

There are happy endings, and then there are over the top, unrealistic, "murderer confesses double homicide to arresting officer" while "arch-rival buys several hundred dollars' worth of china from Heroine in a gesture of appreciation" and "Ecstatic Boyfriend buys lot next door and promises to propose on her next birthday" endings. Taken individually, any one of these unbelievable outcomes would spoil a good mystery, but when all occur in the same novel within the final two chapters, the result is a Regrettable Read.

Murder Under A Mystic Moon was my first read by Yalenorn, (a quick read) and I was so disappointed by the sugary ending that it spoiled the mild enjoyment I felt for this cozy story and put me off future novels in the Chintz N' China mystery series. I was initially attracted to the novel because of the plot outline: Emerald, an amateur psychic with two kids, helps a friend locate a missing biker buddy that police believe is a victim of cougar attack, but Emerald "knows there's something else wandering the forest--something that resembles the Klakatat monster of legend...." A mystery novel with a Psychic, a Mysterious Forest, a Monster, and Bikers--how could this story go wrong?

Well, I'll tell you how. Pack in a whole lot of Emerald eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner (plus extended descriptions of her caffeine addiction and various espresso drinks), following Emerald about her daily life on tangents to Yoga class, and polish off the story with the aforementioned ending, and you end up with a mildly enjoyable "mindless" mystery that offers no challenge to readers whatsoever with its wildly unfocused plot.

The basic plot is straightforward enough: Emerald's psychic talents are requested by her biker friend Jimbo to locate his missing friend. However, too many tangent side-plots interrupt the main thread of the story: Emerald's longtime feud with her nemesis--who happens to be a local TV reporter, her mothering of her children, and her blossoming relationship with her boyfriend Joe. These sub-plots, which could have enhanced the story, instead slog the pacing due to unfailingly ideal outcomes. There is no hint of true suspense that Emerald's relationship may suffer a few snags, her children might get in real trouble or fail to understand life lessons she is trying to teach them, or that her rivals will succeed in smearing her good name or causing true harm to her life. Conflicts are created and resolved in predictable sequence, and this lack of tension makes for a lackluster mystery. I found myself skating over excessive lines of description detailing Emerald's happy reaction to unsurprising conflict resolutions in order to get back to main story.

The mystical descriptions of the novel with enjoyable and interesting, but its protagonist Emerald, while likeable, is somewhat of a goody-two-shoes. The story is peppered with annoying antagonists: Cathy Sutton--bleached-blonde local TV reporter with an attitude whose petty spite targets Emerald multiple occasions, George Pleasant (who is anything but) Cathy's intern cousin and amateur psychic with a gargantuan ego who slanders Emerald on TV and verbally maligns her in almost every scene, Roy--her cheating, slime-ball ex-husband that ignores his two kids and is verbally abusive to Emerald via telephone calls, and Anthony--her cheating ex-boyfriend who dumped Emerald for a starlet and makes a reappearance to get her back. Contrast these repulsive characters with an unrealistically perfect, faultlessly devoted Fireman boyfriend who worships Emerald and her kids, and Emerald's apparent refusal to stand up to any of these irritating personalities except in her mind, and you end up with Mary Jane Mom--the girl next door who can do no wrong.

If you enjoy mindless, predictable mysterious with Scooby-Doo endings and kitschy atmosphere, give this novel a try. If, like me, you prefer SOME element of realism to your tale, skip this series like a bad cold.

I really enjoy this series and this was a great addition to it. But don't be fooled by the kitty and teapot on the cover. Even though it is tagged as one, this is not your usual cozy mystery. It is a little weightier than most and the paranormal aspect is not "cute" but sometimes a little scary. The writing is well done, the story keeps you interested and I love that there is not my usual cozy mystery "eye rolling" happening. This was a solid 4 star read!

One must suspend rational belief to read these books but reading the Chintz 'n China series in order was such a grand decision. I really enjoyed this one, #3. The protagonist Emerald is a single mother owner of the Chintz 'n China Tea Shop in a small town in Washington State near the Cascades. She sees ghosts at times especially her Nana grandmother who comes to her rescue on occasion or just bolsters her confidence. She reads Tarot cards for her customers, has a couple of interesting women friends, a younger boyfriend, and 2 precocious children. I do like the characters and am moving on to #4 right now. One thing I really like about these books is at the end the author tells you the back story of how she came to write this particular mystery. In #3 she calls on the Sasquatch legend of the far northwest US and Canada but treats it respectfully with the notion of the importance of caring for the earth. She also includes instructions for making a charm at the end of each book. Just fun, light cozy mysteries emphasizing the strength of women friendships, sensitive raising of children, and caring for our planet.

Emerald O'Brien is full of action in this mystery/romance/paranormal novel. Book three of this series has a diverse set of characters that you will love or not. Plenty of heartfelt emotion. Ever heard of the Klakatat monster? Read this you will not be disappointed.

Spoiler alert, but I had to do it. Was the writer in a hurry to get this, the 3rd book in the series, to a book launch? Was the editor in too much of a hurry to adequately edit? So many typos and missing words, I started looking for them, and wasn't disappointed. The ending was so over-the-top and lengthy, I forced myself not to skip over half of it to get to the last few words. Sewing up every detail isn't necessary, especially in a series, and not doing adequate research to get vital information correct, like how someone "with a weak pulse but alive" is revived with a few dabs of a wet bandanna, miraculously then hobbles around with an improvised walking-stick but needs a fireman's carry to a ladder, then climbs said ladder out of a cave and is able to walk around on a fractured foot like a super-human in what looks to be only a very short timeframe? Well...no. So many meals, mostly cooked by the children, and so many mundane incidents like dusting shelves in the tea room. Emerald leaving her front door unlocked while showering and walking out of the bathroom to find her boyfriend sitting on her bed when she wasn't expecting anyone, and reacting like it's an everyday occurrence? The reporter and her cousin only needed dastardly moustaches to twirl. So disappointed. The back blurb was the best part of this book.

There is enough going on with the tea and china and tarot reading shop owned by Emerald, and her family that the reader is always surprised by new angles or events. The small town in Washington in which Emerald, her family and friends, and her store inhabit is a mix of more staid and very non conformist characters. I like the parts of the story where her kids misbehave and act out as it brings a sense of realism to the tale. Murray and Harlow, Emerald's best friends, have a role in this one too. There is a lot of mystical, yet somehow almost believable parts about the spirits and creatures and visions that populate the Pacific Northwest, so that adds a lot of atmospher to this mystery. I like this one the best so far, but the hole series is intriguing, not a real cozy, but fun read.

Could be better

Really kept turning the page expecting the next page would be better. Had some really great parts, but way too many poorly written parts. At times it felt like 2 different story tellers wrote it. Some great ideas, but was often ruined with too much mundane information, lack of excitement or poorly executed drama.

Emerald O’Brien wants to live a “normal” life in Chiqetaw, Washington, keeping her children safe, running a tea shop, giving tarot card readings, helping her friends, etc. But her unique skills constantly bring her into contact with ghosties and ghoulies and things that go bump in the night. In Book 3, she has to plan her teen-aged daughter’s birthday party, keep her young son (who has the “second sight”) out of mischief, and help her friend Jimbo find his missing buddy, all while avoiding the local annoying TV reporter and her intern, who thinks he’s a psychic too, and wants Emerald to train him to use his powers. Throw in a lazy sheriff, a monster who resembles Big Foot, and a town festival, and she’s really got her hands full.

I thoroughly enjoy this series – it is well-written, with interesting plots, well-described settings, a balanced, multi-cultural cast, sharp dialogue, and plausible paranormal (sometimes the monsters are of the next-door-neighbor variety, and sometimes they are otherworldly; they never sparkle). I enjoy spending time with Emerald and her children – I like how she treats them like fully-realized people, letting them make mistakes, but still providing guidance and support. I like the relationships between the recurring characters, and how they often get a chance to shine on their own. Reading each one is like spending time catching up with an old friend. I may have read these in the days before e-readers, but if so, they stand the test of time.

The author also writes several other series, including the excellent “Bath and Body” series (written under the name India Ink), which I also highly recommend. Fans of Maggie Toussaint’s Dreamwalker series would enjoy the Chintz n’ China series as well.

I gotta say -- I'd love to be able to give more than 5 stars to some books. Like Murder Under a Mystic Moon. Yasmine Galenorn is new to my favorites list, and she's pretty near the top. Owner of a china shop/tea room, Emerald is also a talented and highly qualified psychic, although she doesn't practice the gamut of the psychic world. What she does, though, she does -- well -- awesomely. Solving murders -- some of the nastiest -- is a challenge that she accepts because it involves a friend of a friend, and gets her good friend Police Detective Murray, a Native American seer herself, to help. Set in Heaven on Earth, the beautiful Northwest (specifically the WAAAAY Northwest) surrounded by the Olympic Forest and the Northern Cascade Mountain Range, I invite fellow readers to leap into the story with hands and feet spread, meet the Klakatat Monster as well as a REALLY BAD GUY. It doesn't get much better than this.

Excellent paranormal mystery.

Someone has it in for bikers and Emerald has found herself tangled in another tale of mystery and murder. Murder Under a Mystic Moon, the third book of the Chintz ‘n China Series is filled with suspense and magic. Ms. Galenorn gives readers her twists on legend and lore, creating a unique story. A lot of character development with Emerald, which I love. I feel like I really got to know her in this book. Life throws her a lot of curveballs, and I enjoy seeing her work her way through them.

Murder Under a Mystic Moon is rich in imagination and has a nice twist with the suspense. A fine paranormal mystery.

Murder Under a Mystic Moon, A Chintz 'n China Mystery, Book #3
by Yasmine Galenorn

I always enjoy delving into Emerald O'Brien's world, and this time was no different. Galenorn produced a great mystery, full of every-day incidents plus some very NOT every-day incidents. Her mix of the normal and paranormal is excellent, the plotting and pacing spectacular, the editing and proofing top-notch, the characters so real they jump off the page, the action heart stopping, and she ties it all up neatly at the end.

You can read the author's summary of this book when you run (don't walk) to Amazon to pick it up!

A satisfying read with a strong, relatable lead

Emerald is such a kick@$$ lead! She juggles being a single parent, business owner, and magical seeker of justice in a very realistic way and still manages to maintain adult relationships. Good thing, because it takes a village to navigate this mystery which is a bit gritty and dark as well as imaginative and complex. There are a few surprises in the personal arena for several characters, and I'm hoping that a vague intimation has a bearing on Emerald's future...

Murder Under a Mystic Moon by Yasmine Galenorn is book 3 in her Chintz ‘n China series. In this book we are reunited with Emerald and her two kids: Kip and Miranda. Emerald has been enjoying some peace and quiet for a few months since the incident with the jade dragon and the curse that was associated with it. Life has gone back to a semblance of normalcy for them. Things are back to normal at the Chintz ‘n China shop and there hasn’t been any more spirits or murders that have popped up to draw her in but all of that is about to change when her newest friend Jimbo, a biker who had an issue with her before but now okay, calls asking her for a favor because a friend of his has gone missing and he’s worried that his friend is dead. Emerald doesn’t really want to get involved in the event that this leads to something darker but Jimbo did help her out in concern to her son’s abduction so she decides to help it out. What she doesn’t expect to find is that his friend is indeed dead but not by some wild animal like the higher ups in the police force want to write it off as since he’s a biker. There is a darkness that Emerald must help to get rid of before it can take any more lives.
Despite the fact that Murder Under a Mystic Moon is part of a series you can read this book as a stand-alone and I absolutely love that about this book. The story moves so smoothly and effortlessly into Emerald’s life and the lives of those around her and I absolutely love it. But this book is full of trouble because it’s not just the death of Jimbo’s friend that Emerald has to deal with. There’s a new guy in town and he’s got a nasty attitude and demeanor when he doesn’t get his way, which is working with Emerald as a partner in the card reading business. He’s pompous, arrogant and real brat for sure and has no problems in doing whatever he thinks he can get away with to get what he wants. It’s just more trouble for poor Emerald but it doesn’t stop there because of course her ex-boyfriend Andrew pops back up into town.
Honestly, this book is so full of surprises and twists that it keeps you engaged the whole way through turning page after page. Emerald has a lot on her but she’s not the only one. Her friend Murray is still dealing with her issues at work with her superior who’s just basically trying to coast his way through until retirement but he’s got an ax to grind when it comes to Murray. But things are now more complicated for Murray because of a few choices that she’s made and now she has to work to keep them under wraps or it could spell the end of her career.
There are hints of the paranormal and supernatural in this story and it’s just enough to add just enough spice to this story. You can literally feel the danger nipping at their heels as they try to figure out what happened to Scar, Jimbo’s friend, protect the people who are close to it and help out the spirits of the mountain who have called upon Emerald to help them. Plus, Emerald has her own issues at home with her kids and with her love life.
This book is full of mystery, drama and just the right amount of the supernatural and romance. I absolutely loved it. I am such a big fan of Yasmine Galenorn’s and these books are right on par with her work I can’t get enough. If you’re looking for a well-balanced book I definitely recommend picking this one up and diving on in. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars and give it two thumbs way up. I will be adding this book to my growing collection of her works.

Emerald gets a call from Jimbo one of his best buddies been missing for a week, saying she owed him one. Wanting her to called up a spirit, usually her grandmother to find out where he is at. Finding him in the woods already dead, does someone have it in for bikers or for him. Interesting job, reading tarot cards, the people pleasantly call her a witch. She has some real zany characters, and mixes it with the folklore of the town. Good mystery, and getting to know the town people.

This is a very exciting story. The characters are strong, interesting and very well described. I had read one of the other books in this series some tim e ago, but shortly after starting to read, I remembered who they were and how they fit. I look forward to reading more.

I too abide in the Pacific Northwest; while I have not seen Sasquatch, I know people who have. This story resonated with me. Thank you for the explanation of how your story came about, that really helped put the story line into perspective. I look forward to reading another of your stories, it really hit the spot.

And here is the fourth star finally!
I still miss the coziness, but the plot is great and I really liked the myths and how they came alive in this story. Way more original than a cursed jade dragon and way better implemented in the story.
I like the characters better with each book so that is also a big contribution to the fourth star. On to the next book!

This is an entertaining and an enjoyable cozy mystery, mostly about loving friendships and family connections, with a warm and comforting feeling throughout with a touch of supernatural. I also liked the storytelling and the quirky characters as well as the beautiful descriptions of the landscape of the State of Washington.

Love it

This is such a great series. A great mother, who happens to be psychic, trying to run her China shop. She also seems to have a talent of accidentally falling over dead bodies. I love this series. All of the main characters are lovable. Each story is like dropping in to see friends you haven't seen in a while.

Who is the monster?

I loved this book on so many levels. It is a murder mystery, a love story and an environmental reminder. That reminder is that respect for our planet as well as each other begins in our own backyards! Read this for fun and the underlying message.

I gave this book five stars simply because I couldn't leave it alone. It's the third in the series that I've read and so far I think it's my favorite. I found spirits in this book to be more believable than in the two previous books. A fun read and one simply hard to put down.
