This series is just... I don't know what word I can use to describe it... Excitement flows into my mind, the new scientific phenomenon will be taught... I can only use the word extraordinary. The main character Atticus Higginbottom started to use his extreme power of Chi'karda. Now that Atticus and Jane both flew into the Nonex and "reunited(?)" with the evil Reginald Chu, I wonder how Atticus will survive, and escape the Nonex. If you like sci-fi with a thrilling story, this is the series you should choose.

A quick, fun read. I liked this one the best of the three books so far in the 13th Reality series. The story moved faster and was darker than the first two books, so even though it is marketed as a children's book I would rather my children be at least 12 before reading it because there were some intense scenes. The ending has closure for some, but not all, of the characters, so you will have to read the next book to get to the real ending.

I enjoy James Dashner as an author. I greatly liked the previous two books in this series, but this one not so much. The story wasn't as interesting and seemed drawn out. I will read the 4th book when it comes out because I would like to know what happens to Tick, but if there is another one after that? I'm not sure. Authors seem to draw out a story so much so they can write more books. I understand that this is their primary way of making a living....but when you string the story out so long just to keep readers buying an extra 5 books it doesn't seem fair.
I also agree with some of the other posters about the degree of violence in this book. It has definitely escalated and is very specific in descriptions of killing creatures. Yes, they aren't humans, but does that ultimately matter? This series is geared towards eleven year olds, but I know that I wouldn't let my children read it until they were older than that.

The story lacks something... I didn't feel attracted to it any more!

I don't know why I didn't like this book. I felt it dragging on and on, until I thought it won't finish!
There was probably few nice and exciting things, but they were spread out thin and didn't last for long. Sato was an important charachter in this book, that's a nice change. But I don't remember Sofia or Paul to be as important in it. And what's with the Soliken? (I'm not even sure of the spelling) I didn't understand what it meant no matter how many times I reread the explanation in the book! The Heance as well! I just didn't like this whole idea.

In general the story feels far from science or logic now, and that's what I hated the most. I don't think I will read the next book any time soon.

There are many things I like about this book and series, but this book seemed to drag a little for me. Mistress Jane is a character who most often is past feeling. She doesn't care the harm she causes. It took a little too long to learn why Tick is who he is.

Mistress Jane has an evil purpose in mind to destroy all the realities, but one. She is more powerful than ever and is pulling out all the stops to defeat Tick and the Realitants. Tick begins to understand his strange possession of the chi'karda powers and uses them to help defeat Mistress Jane. Can Tick defeat Jane and save the realities?

I like this book and I would recommend it for kids who the Maze Runner series. I would recommend this book to or kids/students who like action. I like this book because it is cool and it has action.

The Blade of Shattered Hopes, by James Dashner, was a good book and the theme of it is that, some sacrifices are for the greater good. Some examples of this is when Mistress Jane gives Tick her Chikarda to help him bring them all out of the nonex even though she knew that he would have full control over her, and she might not get her magic back. But the most notable example in the text is when Tick sacrifices his body to stop the fourth dimension from destroying all of the realities, this then causes him to become one with the reality, like a haunce, which turned out to be greater than expected. The genre of the book is science fiction and adventure fiction, there are lots of science parts but there is also lots of adventure and this is all make believe. The setting is mainly in the 13th reality but also a little in the nonex, a place that exists but also doesn’t exist. That is where Tick and Mistress Jane went because they were fighting and using so much chikarda that the realities sent them to the nonex where they exist but don't exist. Tick is the protagonist who comes to save the day, getting Mistress Jane the antagonist, and Reginald Chu another antagonist, out of the nonex, but then his mom and sister saves him by pulling him all the way through. George, a side character, sends off some people on a job, he fears that the end of the realities is soon, so he sends off two people to go and get a button on a box that will release massive amounts of karma that will hopefully sway the fates of the realities. But then, the fourth dimension comes to attack. Tick and Mistress Jane then fight their way through to Sato and his army, where they then retreat. Later after some struggles everyone is in the 13th reality ready to fight the fourth dimension, so then Mistress Jane and Tick leap into the source of the fourth dimension monsters. They fight their way through to the heart where Tick then sacrifices himself by pressing a button releasing a surge of karma that mixed with his Chikarda powers and turned him into one with reality, and also stopped the fourth dimension from causing any more harm. Even though Tick no longer has a full physical form, he can still appear by using the same thing that the haunce did.I thought that the Blade of Shattered Hopes was a good book and one reason why I liked it so much was because it added a creative and new way to end a series. Most books usually have the protagonist winning the day at a small cost, but in this book it ended with a bang. It ended with the protagonist, Tick, sacrificing himself to save the day, but then they added it in that he became part of reality itself, so he is everywhere at the same time. I just thought that that was really creative. I also really liked it because it has lots of science terms in it to make it feel more real and fun in a way I don't see often. I liked how it used quantum physics and also how there was a fourth dimension that is something we can't even prepare to set our minds to see, and I just saw it as a fun way to view science in a fictional way. It also hooked me during the fight scenes with good imagery that helped me picture the fights and some drastic measures that have to be overcome in order for them to succeed. I also found it interesting how they strayed from the last three books and have people work together with their enemies. Another reason why I like this is because whenever they did something like teleport from one reality to another by using a stick, there was always a scientific explanation from the book that fits in with the story. Like the barrier wands, they seem totally unreal and impossible, but then you learn how they actually manipulate a source of energy that is everywhere, so they bend the sources of the realities, to warp through them and go through the holes that they made between realities.I think that people who like science and math, and imagine about things that we have not yet discovered, and I also think that it would be a good early middle school book for action and adventure. I also think that it would make a good book for an adult with an interest in science or math or quantum physics.

Personal Response
This is a pretty good book, The Blade of Shattered Hope, by James Dasher. It is a page turner and the plot is good. It is filled with action and it constantly made me wonder what would happen next. How will Tick escape the Nonex? The fact that I couldn’t tell made it even better. Overall, the book is a good read.

Plot
In this book, there are thirteen prime realities and practically everyone has a copy of themselves in those thirteen prime realities. In the beginning, Frazier grabs those Alterants and puts them effectively in the same spot in each reality, which allows Mistress Jane to eradicate the fifth reality with the end goal of creating a perfect utopia reality. The next event that happens is Tick studying with Mr Chu, his former physics teacher. Then, Jane is summoning some waterkelts who attack Tick’s father and mother. They are saved by Tick using the MegaVac. The next major thing that happens is Tick meeting Jane in his house. The major conflict in this story is stopping Mistress Jane from destroying the fifth reality with the Blade of Shattered Hope. Using the power of the Chi’karda, the Dark Infinity and the Blade, she attempts to destroy the fifth reality, but it is not destroyed.

Characterization
Sato is one of the main heroes in this book. He is forced into a leader's position and is quite good at the job, surprisingly, despite his own belief that he is not going to be a good leader. In the end, he proves himself a good leader.

The main antagonist is Mistress Jane. She, for the most of the book, is in the lead and plans to eradicate the fifth reality. The main way she develops in the book is showing that she is willing to help Tick fix the barriers that hold the realities from the acceleration of Entropy.

Setting
The first major place that the story goes to is Tick’s House. Then the next minor place that the book goes to is a bunch of graveyards, ones with Tick´s dead Alterants in them. Most of the book is set in Tick’s house. In this story, there are 13 prime realities. The book is mainly set in the middle 2000-2010 year time frame.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes science fiction of ages 12+ and both genders. It is a good book to read. It is a page turner. While it has some high level quantum physics in it, that is just there to make the story seem more realistic.

This book is definitely targeted toward a younger audience, but the story is still great. I'm a little annoyed that James Dashner switched over and wrote the Maze trilogy instead of finishing this out. It's been quite a wait between books.

It seems like there's been a plague lately of writers biting off more than they can chew and then dragging their heels to finish the story. Or worse, they robotically churn it out and the sequels stink. Can someone please write a book that begins and ends in a single novel? The amazing thing about writing is you never run out of fiction! If you finish one story line, I'm sure there will be something new a fictional character can face in a sequel!

But back to this book. The characters have evolved significantly with each book. It would be interesting to go back and read The Journal of Curious Letters and see if the kids are even similar to their current depictions. I liked how this story unraveled, and there are some complex issues I want to read more about in book 4.

My life is not different because I read this book, but now that I've started, I want to finish. Are there going to be 13 books? I hope not.

I have really enjoyed this series. It reminds me of A Wrinkle in Time combined with The Mysterious Benedict Society. It's filled with plenty of science, crazy contraptions and quirky (and some wonderfully scary) characters. It's a great option if you're looking for something exciting to read out loud to your children. As a parent, I think it's great to have a wonderful series that keeps your kids interested -- and reading. However, not many books can keep my interest past a trilogy. I was disappointed that this wasn't the last book in the series.

5/5 or more

Oh my... The best book in this series so far but probably yes. This book really touched my soul. From all of the screams, the sacrifices, the sadness, all of them. Never feeling a little bit of boredom since the first read this. And finally Sato did what he really can. His confidence, his leadership. I love him even more.

‘We left ten kids! Ten!’

Ouch. I feel that sound. Sato, this is one of a lot of reason ILY. Thanks to Sofia and Paul, you guys are such great friends.

I cried. I wanna hug Sato so bad.

This was a really good book with a suspenseful ending. I did not see the end coming. I was so shocked when Jane stabbed Tick, that i had to read it over and over because i didn't believe it. I cant wait for the next book. The end was a cliffhanger because Tick is in the Nonex, but no one knows where he is. He just "ceased to exist". I liked how Kayla and Lisa were brought into the story. I really think that Lisa and her mom will have a big part in the next book.

This book wasn't quite as good as the other two. I thought that the resolution to the whole problem of the entire universe dissolving forever was overly simplistic. That kinda messed up the ending for me. I did like how the book actually ended. Nice twist to set up for a sequel. Tick's family was also set up to be a more important part of the story in the next book. I look forward to the next book in the series even though this one wasn't my favorite of the three.

In this installment, our hero begins to understand what he can do and how to channel it. The action is there, it cuts rapidly around. I do however find the writing isn't as refined as other authors and while I feel that the characters were much more relatable in this installment, all in all I'm getting kind of tired of the series as a whole. I will finish it out because that's the way I roll, but I don't think I'll recommend it widely.

Definitely the best book yet in the series, I couldn't put down. I feel like this book is the turning point (much like Harry Potter book 4) where as the character has finally begun to grow up and make some serious world changing decisions so has the the author raised the bar on the plot.
I am hopeful for the prospects of what is to come.

Sadly, as a result of Tick's actions in destroying Reginald Chu's Dark Infinity in the last book and his encounter with Mistress Jane, there is a setback - Her resolve to become nicer has soured and she wants revenge - she wants to eliminate Tick and his family entirely.
This time, Mistress Jane wants to change the Realities by destroying one of them using dark matter.
There's plenty of action again in this story and plenty of travelling between the Realities. What I didn't like about this story was it's more bordering on touching things in the realm of theology - e.g. the Haunce and Soulikens, mention of eternity and other similar matters. Tick even pays a visit to the Nonex.
But really, if Tick has such strong powers, why didn't he ever think to reverse what he'd done to Mistress Jane to bring in healing and perhaps redeem the situation so that she might turn away from her evil designs? It's as if the author couldn't even think like that.
The trouble is, her actions with dark matter and Tick's intervention with Chi'karda (a mystery power) has resulted in the Realities being in jeopardy of literally falling apart and there seems little that can be done to stop it. We have to go the last story to find out what happens.

I was sent the first three books in this series (I think it’s up to book five now) way back in my very first box of books for review, more than two years ago. I read the first one straight away because I’m generally a Dashner fan. A few months later I read book two and didn’t really enjoy it much. So this one has been ignored for far too long. And... rightly so... sadly.
Tick and his friends are focused on saving all 13 of the realities from the evil forces of Mistress Jane. Meanwhile, surprise, surprise, the evil forces are focused on conquering all 13 of the realities! Who would have expected that?!?
I end up with the same issue in every Dashner series. He has a great story idea. He starts to write it. His first book is great. He then decides he could easily drag it out to maybe ten books? He ruins the story through how drawn out it is. And this particular book also travels into gruesome details of non-human creatures being killed in full gory detail, which is not a middle school reader thing, thank you any way, Mr Dashner. It’s a pity because I quite liked the first book, but I won’t be reading books 4 and 5.

This was insanely good! From the first chapter this book was action packed until the very end. I never got bored or uninterested while reading this. And one of my favorite characters, Sato, showed his amazing true colors. Everyone was so fierce, brave, and caring for one another - except for Mistress Jane who only cared about her perfect Utopian Reality - which led to the epic conclusion of destroying Jane's evil factory. I really, really liked this installment of The 13th Reality! It was just super fun, exciting, and even dark at some points. But that's what makes this story great: Characters struggling to save the Realities with everything they have - even if it means destroying yourself in the process. ;)

I even ship Lisa and Sato together. I think they would make a cute couple. All in all, this was fantastic! Seeing more of this world and what it has to offer is thrilling to say the least. But don't take my word for it. Read it yourself if you liked the first two books in this series. You won't regret reading this crazy sequel!

This book was a really good sequel to the previous book (I can't remember the name at the moment). "The Blade of Shattered Hope" has done a very good job of continuing the story in this series. Personally, I believe that the best thing this book did was character development. Before reading this book, I didn't really like Sato. However, after finishing it, I'm hoping that they don't kill him off because now, I actually know more about him. I do have one complaint, though. In this book, we get to meet Tick's family, more than we have in previous books. The bond between Tick's family members is almost TOO perfect to the point of being cheesy. This is basically how they talk to each other:
Tick's Dad: "Hello, my perfect, strong, brave son! Let's go get these bad guys and give them a whopping they'll remember!"
Tick: "Ok, my perfect, amazing, awesome dad!"
Other than that, it was a very good read.

Really enjoyed the first book with all the clues and puzzling solving. Really liked book two with more problem solving, Tick understanding more of what he is and the supporting cast brings some real laughs to the story. ( mothball and rutger)

This book didn't really enjoy it, missed Mr George's clues and it took a very dark evil turn that let me feeling unsettled.

Considering book two ended with a big mystery about Tick's parents it was never really spoke about in this book so not holding much hope that this ending will be explained in the next book .

I am reading the next book to see how the supporting characters react to the current events not so much about Tick though

[The Blade of Shattered Hope (The 13th Reality #3) - James Dashner]

Rating: 4.97/5.00

"I am honestly impressed by how well-crafted this book series is, so far. The first two books undoubtedly delivered in all relevant aspects. And the streak continues in The Blade of Shattered Hope. This third book got me hooked, so I woke up at 4:50 AM feeling excited to read it after my daily morning jog. The 15-30 minutes I spent every morning reading the book never left me feeling disappointed.

Due to this, I can't wait to start reading the last book in this science fiction, fantasy series tomorrow with the same level of expectations."

DNF 11/17/25 - I like Sophia and Paul, but Tick being so volatile was tiresome. I realize learning to control energy or power would take time and practice, but I got very tired of hearing about Tick "pushing down the Chi'karda" or "trying not to lose control."

And I saw the writing on the wall when

I am not a fan of James Dashner's The Maze Runner series, but I'm not big into dystopia, but since I'm not enjoying this sci fi/fantasy series either, maybe it is his writing style.
