Last Halloween, Scary Godmother and Hannah taught Jimmy a lesson in good holiday manners. Now, not only does Jimmy know monsters really exist, but he's convinced they're coming back to get him! How will he save himself? Stop Halloween from coming, of course! Will his dreadful plan succeed, or will Hannah save her monster pals from the revenge of Jimmy?
Jill Thompson is an American comic book writer and illustrator. Probably best known for her work on Neil Gaiman's Sandman characters and her own Scary Godmother series, she has also worked on The Invisibles, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman and more recently, Beasts of Burden.
The art is noticeably better. A lot of cool designs for frightside, including a ghostly brisdge and some willowy goth vampires. The story is about as bad, but with a more annoying prose style and terrible poetry.
The plot is a retelling of the grinch. Young Jimmy decides to destroy Halloween because he is terrified it will bring monsters to claim his soul. His plans are thwarted by the resourceful kids of the town and he learns a valuable “lesson.”
SPOILER
A long time is spent on setup.
We see Jimmy is terrified, saws the legs off his bed, empties his closet. And swears to stop Halloween. This was well done.
Then there is a section with Hannah and the boogeyman reciting a long poem about Halloween. Irrelevant but provides opportunities for illustration.
Jimmy tries 3 ways to stop Halloween — destroying Pumpkins, costumes, and candy. The kids rolll with the smashed pumpkins, make their own costumes, and forgo treats in favor of tricks. Each time Jimmy seems to succeed, the effects of his actions are seen in Frightside, blocking the ghoulies’ way to the Halloween bridge.
Now desperate, Jimmy tries one final gambit — destruction of the big Halloween parade with TP. However, when Hannah says the paper wrapped floats are “ghosts,” the show is on and the monsters come out to play.
Jimmy almost gets carried away by a balloon but the monsters save him and he realizes they’re not so bad. Scary Godmother rides up with a cart of treats and a grand Halloween is had by all.
I liked that the pumpkins already had mouths because Jimmy kicked them so they only had to do eyes and noses. The character I liked in it was Hannah. I liked every single part!
