The Hound of the Baskervilles

When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the moors, a heart attack seems to be the likely cause. However, a certain Dr Mortimer thinks there is more to it than that. Although it seems impossible, he believes that a supernatural hound haunts the moors. His theory suggests that this beast has been on the rampage for years, killing generations of male Baskervilles.

With the victim's son returning home from Canada, and the mystery still unsolved, Dr Mortimer turns to Sherlock Holmes for help. He is worried that the deaths will continue until all the Baskerville men are dead - or someone discovers the truth.

Can I just say this is a review of the graphic novel adaptation, not the original story which is one of my favourites (5 stars).
Really liked this but I will always prefer the original as (inevitably) the story needed to be condensed for this adaptation.

Wow. Prostě wow. Od začátku do konce jsem četla jak zažraná. Za mě super. Jen někdy jsem se do toho malinko zamotávala.

Takžeee, komiksové zpracování se mi velmi líbilo, brala bych ho u každé povinné četby. Jakoby tady ten příběh znám, takže jsem od toho nečekala nic převratně nového, ale třeba mě překvapilo, že to vypráví Watson. Jinak líbilo se mi taky, že tam nebylo nějaký zbytečný okecávání a hned se šlo na příběh, ale tak ono když to má 60 stran, tak by se to tam asi úplně nevešlo. Overall celkem v pohodě počteníčko na půl hoďky.

Příjemně mě to překvapilo - 4★

Komiksová ilustrace byla docela fajnová, jen jsem pořád postavu Sherlocka a Watsona porovnávala k té verzi ze seriálu od bbc🤨. Takže když je tam Watson nakreslenej jako dědula s knírkem a postavou santy clause, tak jsem to úplně nebrala vážně. Jinak se to příjemně četlo, bylo to rychlý a šlo to pochopit. Docela by mě teďko zajímalo přečíst si tu full story, protože ten námět je překvapivě dobrej??škoda jen, že to mam teď jakoby vyspoilerovaný..

This is one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes novels. It is adventurous, mysterious and looks supernatural in the beginning. But you know there’s always a rational solution. There’s a legend, and a curse of the Baskerville family. It is about a vicious huge, wolflike beast, who wants to kill all the members of the Baskerville family. Sir Charles Baskerville dies near the swamp, accompanied by a terrible sound. And here comes he’s heir, Sir Henry. He inherited the whole wealth of the Baskerville family. But he’s life in danger, the locals believe in the curse, and they warn Sir Henry to leave, but instead he asks the help of Sherlock Holmes. He resolves the puzzle. One of the neighbors (Mr. Stapleton) is also an heir for the Baskerville fortune, but he is the son of a dangerous criminal, and also himself is a criminal and an impostor so he can’t just ask for his heritage, he wants it all, so he has to kill Sir Henry. So he relies on the curse, buys a huge dog, put phosphorus on it’s eyes, and mouth to look like the hound of Baskerville as it is in the curse... Sir Charles died of heart attack as he heard and saw the hound... and now Mr. Stapleton wants to kill Sir Henry with the hound, but Sherlock interferes and saves Sir Henry.

Knížku jsem četla nejdříve v klasickém formátu a velmi se mi líbila. Komiksové zpracování klasického díla mi přišlo také velmi povedené (i když nejsem pravidelný čtenář komiksů). Ilustrace jsou příjemné, především vykreslení blat je velmi věrně zachyceno, také se mi líbilo znázornění Watsona (u Holmese nadšení nesdílím). Komiks se úplně nedrží předlohy, respektive řada věcí je vynechána, ale podstava a sdělení příběhu je zachováno, a to je podle mě podstatné.

The illustrations are rather generic, but I enjoyed the classic story. At the end of the story, the detectives describe the infamous Hound as a "bloodhound/mastiff" cross--I wondered if perhaps it was actually a "Cuban bloodhound"--a once-infamous animal used in the US to attack escaping slaves and similar to fighting/hunting breeds like the presa canario.

The story won't change, but lately I have been interested in rereading illustrated versions of my favourites. This is a review of the adaptation published by Campfire. The story is adapted by J.R. Parks, and illustrated by Vinod Kumar.

Whatta comic experience! My weekend is sickly "booked". Bought this comic book coz I really love Sherlock Holmes. And The Hound of Baskervilles is very popular in the lycantrophy/lupine literature. I recalled how Barb Karg thrashed out the details of this piece of art in her Werewolf Guide book. It was a nice short read! Talk about comic relief!
