It Won't Hurt Forever: Guiding Your Child Through Trauma

Rate this book
Your child has just experienced a distressing event a bicycle fall,a medical procedure,a frightening encounter with a dog. What do you do? Most of us would try to comfort the child, and then hope for the best. There is more you can do than just hope, teaches Peter Levine. On It Won't Hurt Forever, Dr. Levine offers his 35 years of expertise in healing emotional trauma to show you a better way to help your child. Stress researchers now know that after a painful or fearful experience, children may endure such symptoms as unexplainable pain, nightmares, bedwetting, nervousness, aggression, and other problems. Why? Because all animals, including humans, possess a natural physiological process for discharging the energy of such experiences, explains Dr. Levine. When that process is thwarted, a child may suffer long after the event. Now, with this groundbreaking audio-learning program for parents and caretakers, you can gain the skills you need to help a child recover from frightening events in a healthier, more natural way using the body's own healing mechanisms. Children possess the innate ability to respond and recover from potentially traumatic circumstances. With It Won't Hurt Forever, you will learn how to activate this priceless resource within any child in need. Includes 18-page study guide and ten full-color illustrations

This is a two hour audio book I got from the library and I love Peter Levine, so of course, I rated this all the stars.
He presents useful information about trauma processing and how a parent can help a child through. Although this isn't new information to me, I do appreciate that he put this out for people who dont have this information and it isn't automatic.
He does go off on some interesting tangents about Ted Kacyznski and circumcision... but overall, a nice intro to somatic experiencing.

Listened to audio on Overdrive. Great information for parents about how to help young children. I think teachers could easily apply some of the strategies. Need to obtain a hard copy for the nursery rhymes at the end. Students in the younger grades could benefit from them.

I do wish more trauma books were written with teachers in mind. How do I help these students????

Some really practical and helpful tools in this little audiobook. In classic Levine style, he gives info to help caregivers help their kids in processing trauma or other scary things in bodily ways. Quick listen, and the end includes some really sweet poems to help in processing with kids - Mister Rogers style. Worth listening through.

I think this book could be good for some, but I was looking for something dealing with more complex trauma and kids from hard places. The audio book was almost too conversational. It was hard to follow.

I don't work with kids specifically, but it was a quick little audiobook narrated by Levine... Would recommend to all parents.

Information about traumatic release exercises and the result of a stress response that hasn't been physically discharged, very interesting!
