Therapist Review

This has quickly become my favorite boundaries book; I was recommending it to clients before I even finished it. I feel like when people talk about boundaries, it is really only external boundaries; looking at internal boundaries feels revolutionary and very needed!

I will say this is a buy the actual book and work through it slowly type of read, not an audiobook in the car (what I did) kind of book. There are journal prompts and a lot to think about throughout the reading journey.

I will definitely need to reread this book to make sure to gain all the benefits of it, but I’m looking forward to doing so.

Respond rather than react

If you want to respond to others rather than react then this book is for you. This book teaches how to discover, create, communicate and hold boundaries. It talks about 2 different types of brain “integrated and disintegrated” which are necessary for proper functioning of our reaction and responsiveness. Also, compassion is the main component towards others and self to develop healthy boundaries. I like the analogy of self with a river. Read for yourself to find the explanation to this analogy.

Boundaries are definitely a buzz word right now and as I’ve learned about them I’ve always thought oh I need to do more of that since I am a people pleaser but had no idea how to. I’ve gone to therapy off and on and for whatever reason boundary work wasn’t one of things that I remember.

This book made understand boundaries external vs internal and how to implement them for concrete for me. I read it on my phone but want to buy the hard copy as a good reference guide!

Expertly written in an approachable and knowledgeable way. I laughed several times in this book. The length makes it seem easy to come back to in the future. Excited to speak with the author tonight! Here are some of my favorite parts:

Setting boundaries that stick

Boundaries are any thing a person does to feel safer

Not protected vs protected brain state
Non integrated brain state rescues child from street without thinking
Non integrated brain state also says hurtful things during fight

Requests vs complaints

Suffering often comes when we put our will up against reality.

Boundaries are what I will do not what I expect someone else to do.

You were right, it hurts when she does this. It’s also not my life. She can live her life her way, and I can take care of me with this boundary.

QUESTION: Why have soothing gestures?

Resentment is when I wanted to set a boundary but didn’t.

YASSSSS!: Wisest and kindest version of me, where do I want my boundary to be.

Boundaries are the distance to which I can love both you and me simultaneously. - Prentiss Hemphill

Tragic? Hmmm we’ll see.
Wonderful blessing? Hmmm we’ll see.

Healthy is not in the middle of the spectrum, it is what is right for you in a given moment.

Containing boundary
1. Pause
2. Compassion gesture
3. Values words

LOVE THIS: “Seth puts his hand on his heart and quietly says the word: Goonies.”

What to do during a time out:
1. Give yourself some time
2. Love yourself like crazy
3. Reengage

I'd heard this author on several podcasts before picking up her book so I already knew I liked her approach, but I greatly appreciated this book. As the subtitle says, this goes beyond giving you the words to set boundaries with other people or within yourself; Shore uses neurobiology to help you develop practices that will engage with the "lower" parts of the brain so that you can feel safe and grounded enough to keep your prefrontal cortex online in order to be able to ask for what you want and protect yourself emotionally regardless of other people's decisions or emotions. I listened to this on audio but I'd like to get it in print so I can more easily go through the many exercises Shore lays out in this book. I believe a lot more communication would be productive if everyone read this book!

⭐REVIEW: Setting Boundaries That
Stick by Juliane Taylor Shore

Setting boundaries for myself is one of the hardest
things I find myself doing. I always struggled with
standing up for myself. When something bothers me, I
tend to hide it until it bursts, losing my cool, which
makes me feel terrible.

Setting Boundaries that Stick is the book I didn't know I
needed so badly. In Setting Boundaries that Stick, the
author provides an evidence-based, neurobiological
approach to setting boundaries. You'll learn to set
external, psychological, containing, and physical
boundaries without damaging yourself and others
around you.

The book has engaging exercises to help you maintain
boundaries, feel happier, and connect better with
others through clear and honest communication.

🤔 My Thoughts on this book

Finally, there is a book that gives the reader a clear
and incredibly actionable process to follow and
accomplish their goals. The book is packed with
practices you can use to change your relationship with
yourself and others.

To say that the book is practical is an understatement.
The author walks the reader through each step and
explains how to make everything work. Moreover, the
scientific approach employed by the author adds to the
book the reliability most self-help books don't have.

"Why should I read it❓"

If you struggle to set boundaries with people in your life
and your past has conditioned you to expect pushback
when standing up for yourself, making you worried
about letting others down, damaging your relationships,
or being "less than" others expect of you, you need to
absolutely check this book out.

Have you ever struggled with setting boundaries for
yourself❓

I will rate this book 5 out of 5 . No doubt this book is a mirror to the society . In This book author has explained how our childhood traumas and experiences results in producing cold adult individuals . She has given answer of many important questions like " why creating boundaries is important for healthy relationships?" , " why we should not suppress our emotions and the hidden cost of it which society ignores " , " why it is important to be a good communicator " , "why being vulnerable is actually not a sign of weakness ?" . She has explained the answer to these questions in her book perfectly . OMG I love neurobiology. This book is so helpful in understanding our fast brain (reactions, life or death, fight/flight/freeze, etc.) vs. slow brain (thoughtful, analytical, rational, emotional wisdom). It is also helpful in helping us rewire old stories, beliefs, and triggers that put us into a quick reaction based on a survival need when we were younger. For example, when someone is yelling and that is a trigger for you because an adult in your childhood home would yell and cause emotional and/or physical damage, you may still go into a panic if this happens now... when you have other options now - like leaving the scene.

As a menopausal woman in the South not setting boundaries has been a part of my surrounding culture. This book seems to have been written with neurodiverse people in mind and the narrator of the audiobook has a super soothing and kind voice. The explanations of the brain are excellent and the way the exercises are broken down and real-life examples used makes this easy to follow and absorb. I am now understanding not just what boundaries are, but also how to take out the anger, just be practical, and be kind to myself by following up. My relationships with my kids are already getting even better as they are learning along with me. Great book!

Please yourself instead of pleasing others.

If you are someone who has hard time saying "No" to people, who is a people pleaser and always gets hurt in the end while trying to make others happy, then you need to read this book. This book will teach you how important boundaries are in life. We all need to have these boundaries in order to protect our peace. People can only hurt you if they have access to the outside world of these boundaries and not everyone should be allowed to this world. This book has numerous stories from people about how they realized they needed healthy boundaries. You will not only read this book, but you will understand the true meaning of "boundaries" in depth.
A must read for each and every person.
