This opens with Lys and Randal performing for coins. Then they learn that Randal broke the law -- the Prince forbids all but his own wizard from practicing -- but he can get off by doing some magic for the prince. And Lys takes a job acting in the royal troupe. This involves a treacherous brother, lots of disguise magic, Randal's inhibition about some magic after the events in The Wizard's Statue, a prisoner, saving a captive he's been ordered to kill, and more.
This is a book from the middle of a series; I acquired it in childhood (probably as part of the Reading Is Fun program in elementary school) and never read any of the other books in the series. So, there's context that is missing, but it reads fine as a standalone, and I would definitely have enjoyed reading more books in this series as a kid.
Adorei!
Randal somehow always lands in trouble, no matter where he goes. But despite this, one thing I love about this series, the actual trouble (and way out of trouble) changes each time. This book's plot was exciting and interesting, with unforeseen twists and turns that kept you on your toes!
When Randal and his best friend, Lys, join the theater troupe in the court of a wealthy prince, they discover an evil plot against the kindhearted leader. Randal's wizardry skills are needed now more than ever. This fourth book in Troll's spellbinding "Cirle Of Magic" book series delivers what it promises--in fact, it can be read as a standalone, though, without losing the magic, the charm, and the characters.
The overall thrust is of self-discovery, personal responsibility, and other positive values, told in the midst of an exciting action-packed adventure. Violence, spies, good twins, bad twins, and theatre all mixed, with the hero making choices that matter.

I'm confused about the different subtitle for this edition of the book. But I do have a copy of all 6 titles at my parents, and I think this is the correct series...
