This book was awful. I wanted REAL answers for depression, not just obvious shit that any common person could spew.

This book was very centered around Christianity, which rather bugged the living hell out of me. I do consider myself a Christian, I have a personal relationship with God, etc. etc. But everything this book was preaching felt like listening to a dry, phony pastor preach for 3 hours about things that were seemingly rehearsed. Like, yeah, okay, God is the answer, Jesus is the answer, oh you're depressed because your relationship with God is not 100% or more. Um okay NO that is not the case. Sometimes life just sucks and the circumstances that you're in are physically impossible to be happy during.

This book claims to have helped millions, but I feel like much of its information is outdated and no longer fully applicable to modern day teenagers like myself. In fact, it's almost as if the only people who would find this book appealing are middle-aged/elderly God-fearing, I-never-miss-a-day-of-church Christians. The same ones who are close-minded about the world and do not actually follow through with what they preach. In fact, you may call them hypocrites. Yeah, that's it, I feel like the majority of the people who actually think this book is pure gold in everything it's saying are the same people who are "good Christians" but not real, good people.

If you are a teenager and struggling with depression, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. It does not help. It only disgusted me, annoyed me, bored me. You'd be better off with a psychiatrist + a psychotherapist--trust me.

I could probably write a better book about depression. Alas, I'm not cured of it, but I've made so much progress, no thanks to ANY of the suggestions in this book.

I understand that every person is different and may take away from this book things that I may have overlooked or were distasteful to me. Seeing how most, if not all of the young adults struggling with depression nowadays experience generally the same thing (but VERY different circumstances, reactions, etc.), this book's suggestions are useless.

There's an unspoken truth about depression among young adults that only we depressed young adults understand. This book totally misses the mark.

This book really ministered to me when I was in the depths of my depression. I even bought a few to give away. Looking through the book now, I really wish I had taken it more seriously and heeded the advice in it sooner.

My only complaint is I didn't really care for the chapter that lists common cures for depression, such as antidepressants because it needs to be updated and reiterated that abiding in Christ and walking in the Spirit is the only true cure for depression.

For those who are struggling with depression, here's my journey to freedom from depression: I was on antidepressants for 7.5 years and wasn't abiding in Christ. In October 2005 after studying about the side effects and withdrawals and armed with information, I took my last pill after weaning myself over the course of a few months. The worst of my withdrawal symptoms lasted for a few weeks (I was in bed for a week), then were still pretty bad for two months then gradually decreased. The withdrawals caused my first and only anxiety attack, and I am so glad I knew in advance what to expect. Plus I had electrical zaps in my brain, dizziness, nausea, severe depression, and inner thigh muscle tremors. You must know before beginning that you will have these withdrawal effects, otherwise you will be tempted to take another pill. I threw mine away in advance. Make sure you have someone to support you at a moment's notice and that plenty of people are praying for you. My husband was the one to see me through.

IT WAS SO WORTH IT! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I haven't had depression since. My brain went from being stuck in second gear with dulled emotions, to feeling alive and like myself again. I used to feel like the world was closing in on me. Now I'm free! And you can be too.

Turn your life over to Christ and live for Him. Ask Him to take control of your life and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Only through a close relationship with Jesus Christ the power of the Holy Spirit will you ever know true and lasting joy, no matter what your cirucumstances. God bless you!

Talks about self-pity being the cause of depression. Biggest take away is to give thanks in all situations anticipating God’s ultimate deliverance, His assurance to supply all your needs as you go through problems, and that He will cause all things to work out for your good and His Glory!

Depression

As an individual who has had various bouts of depression. Merely saying it's a choice isn't exactly accurate and or encouraging for those in the current state of mind. Yes there are actions one can take to safe guard their heart and mind. To say it's sin to an individual in an already "self pity" mentality will only add. I'm not saying grovel with the individual speak life back into them where they listened to the lies

I have found to be truth the idea that the main factor for depression is self-pity. When you suffer of depression and you get that revelation it changes the whole game. I also liked the examples because I helped me to understand some situations that had been difficult for me. It helped me to have empathy and understanding of other people’s depression. I hope I can also provide help as this book did to me.

I’ve always loved LaHayes writing. He really helps the reader understand the spiritual roots of depression that reach beyond the physical causes. It’s not a recommended read for everyone because of the hard truth but for those in counseling or who really want help, it is a great read.

“How to Win Over Depression” authored by Tim LaHaye, is a very insightful and practical book for those who are facing depression or those around us who are depressing. These few years, we often heard news that many people quit ministry, and even worse, that some ministers committed suicide because the work of ministry is just too much for them. This could be why not many people in the church today want to be involved in full-time ministry. Recently, I heard from a friend of mine who is engaging in pastoral ministry and whose wife suffers from depression due to some quarrel case that happened in the children’s ministry in the church. It was hearing this news that motivated me to read this book. This tells me that ministers (and their families) are not immune to depression, for they are just regular human beings. Sometimes, we think those who are engaged in the ministries are like supermen, powerful, and never have any discouragement. But the opposite is true. Ministry is tough. Church members must understand that ministers and their families are human, with weaknesses like them.

The author strongly emphasizes that the real cause of depression is not so much about physical hormones, environment, or human factors, even if they may contribute to it to some extent. The real problem is the wrong thinking pattern that often leads to self-pity. Self-pity is sin. Unless a person realizes that self-pity is a sin and needs to repent before God to obtain forgiveness, that person is hopeless to cure depression. I like very much that the author acknowledges that depression has something connected with spirituality. For Jesus said, “Without Me, you can do nothing.” May the Lord help us overcome our mental thinking with the help of the Holy Spirit. I strongly recommend this book! If anyone wants to read this book, I have it in English and Chinese PDF format. Just message me if you want it.

This book had some helpful tips, and I liked the use of biblical concepts and verses because it’s important to me that the advice come from a Christian perspective. However, it doesn’t seem like the author truly understands clinical depression. His few examples from his own experience, where he claims to understand, are really just stories of disappointment after a life event. He doesn’t seem to have experience with the type of genetic, chemical, mind-numbing depression that many of us suffer from; depression doesn’t always have a causative event that set it off. As someone who suffered from major depression for 7 years, unwilling to try medication because “depression is really just spiritual weakness, and I just need to trust God more”, his book certainly reinforced the negative stigma that many in the church have against seeking help for mental illness. In addition, I was extremely turned off about 3/4 of the way into the book when he started quoting Bill Gothard. I can give grace for that because at the time of publishing the charges about that man had not yet surfaced. But still.

I read about half of this book. These are the things I pulled out of it that I liked.

There are 4 parts to man: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual.

Depression always results from a specific cause. That the individual does not know the cause does not eliminate the fact of its existence.

Depression, at every phase of its development, includes a component of anger, whether visible or invisible, whether conscious or unconscious. This anger is directed against the individual who is expected to provide love but who disappoints.

The two most powerful emotions are love and anger.

Nothing produces depression faster or more deeply than self-pity. The truth, like surgery, hurts. There is simply no way to have a tumor removed without pain. The same is true emotionally. The moment we call the tumor of self-pity to the attention of the depressed person, he resists it...but that doesn't change anything. In fact, I never expect agreement on this point from one who is depressed. In his condition, anything as ugly as self-pity is simply too much to bear. He would much rather receive sympathy, pills, or pious platitudes that place the responsibility on someone else.

The bible directs us to project only positive thoughts on the screen of our imagination. Do not project negative, self-pitying, critical mental images on this imagination screen. Sometimes this happens if you were rejected and criticized by a parent. You have to trust God for a new set of films for your mental projector. Work on being thankful.

Unlike the analyst who leads his patient to "talk out his frustrations" or "recall his childhood experiences," the Bible instructs Christians to forget "those things which are behind" and "to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Phil 3:13-14

The importance of keeping one's mind clear of negative, harmful, and evil thoughts by replacing them with good, wholesome ideas is clearly reflected in Romans 12:2, which challenges Christians to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind." As the mind goes, so goes the behavior. Transformed conduct only follows in the wake of a renewed mind.

Menstruation is part of God's fantastic design for a woman's life. It is a symbol of womanhood and motherhood for which she should be grateful.

The Bible warns us that "without a vision, the people perish." Certainly no man can function without vision or a goal. Because the human mind is a goal-oriented mechanism, it must be pursuing an explicit end or it will not function properly. If you do not project on the screen of your imagination a series of worthwhile challenging goals, you will gradually develop the demotivating habit of projecting self-defeating, negative, pessimistic goals which will depress you.

The best way to reverse negative thinking patterns is to memorize scriptural principles that produce happiness. The bible says, "If ye know these things (principles of God), happy are ye if you do them." John 13:17. Therefore, happiness is the result of 1) knowing the principles of God and 2) doing them.

Every depressed person that the author has ever counseled has a problem with self-acceptance.

The filling of the Holy Spirit produces three great emotional characteristics: a song in your heart, a thanksgiving mental attitude, and a submissive spirit. Eph 5:19-21. It is impossible to be depressed when you realize all three of these emotions.

The armor of God pieces provide adequate defense for everything but retreat.

Music has a far greater effect on human emotions than most people realize, for it can invigorate, life the spirits, depress, and in some cases aggravate. Not only can it create moods, but it can also perpetuate or dispel them.

If you examine carefully the words of many popular tunes, you will find them unusually filled with complaint and lamentation. Gloom and disaster seem to constitute the foreboding element in modern music. The last thing a depressed person needs is to hear this kind of music, but strangely enough, because of his depressed mood he may indeed gravitate to that music.

A CEO never hires a top echelon executive until he first interviews his wife.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Phil 4:8

A grateful person is a happy person. Counting our many blessings to see what God has already done in our lives develops an optimistic faith to trust Him for the future.

Depressed people are usually ungrateful people who in turn become unhappy people.

In the author's opinion, one reason so many adults encounter recurring depression today is that they were not breastfed as babies. Everyone needs love and attention and breastfeeding does that in a wonderful way.

No man worthy of the title would suffer his wife to be verbally or physically abused by anyone, including his own children.

Having triumphed over the western world by the time he was 33 years old, Alexander the Great became depressed because there were no more worlds for him to conquer. During his depression he turned to drink, and it is said that he literally drank himself to death.

It's a great book. Talking about Depression, so true that you can use it in your everyday life to see and judge yourself about the way you think and how do you see yourself. And you can find out why you are able to go on depression because of the way you think and it's JUST the way you think, not the circumstances or even not your abilities. That book is a must read as all of us must have experienced - more or less - depression in our lives and by that book, you can find out why does that happen in our lives.
It talks also about self pity and how it is a great disaster, how it can control our lives and make us slaves to depression for a very long life.
The author takes you to a long but interesting journey that will make you able to fight against depression and have the ability to win.
