Enjoyed this book -- and would have given it 4 stars -- right up until the ending, at which point the story kind of fell apart (at least for me). Admittedly the story had kind of been leading up to the ending that it had, but that was also one of the issues I had with the story as a whole, which is the whole idea of the heroes being "chosen".
I have never been a fan of the "chosen" hero, the hero who is destined to save the world. And the ending of this story really feels like the characters didn't defeat the villains for any other reason than they were destined to do so. All in all an interesting story concept that could have been developed much better than it was.
Well, a quarter century later and I still enjoy this setting. I wanted to go back and revisit the original with word the we may have a new version of the game out sometime in the next year. It still speaks to me and while it certainly follows the 90s formula of fantasy fiction to some extent I find I care about the characters. Score one for nostalgia!
