Problem 1: I loved the bearded lady. She seemed like such a cool person, and I wanted to get to know her more, but then she is brutally murdered out of nowhere!?!
Which is fine — I just didn’t realize this was a murder mystery — so I adjusted my expectations to the genre.
Then…
They mock her. Everyone mocks the kind, cool lady — making constant jokes about her beard, her weight, her delicious baking, her kindness to the child she adopted — they don’t treat her as human.
They mock the sweetest character in the book.
Bonus!
The phrase: “Melvin, the fire-eating midget”
Problem 2: her cruel friend.
Page 95: Ruthie sighs. "Did I tell you the story about the time I stapled the church secretary's skirt to a pew?"
"Yes And when she stood up to sing Just As I Am, her skirt fell down and she farted. Good story.”
Uhh…
Stripping someone in front of a crowd is sexual harassment.
Lesbian joke:
Page 129: "Come on. We must have company." I grab Ruthie by the arm and pull her into the bathroom. Shutting the door, I follow her into the cramped shower, where we stand close enough to be PG-13.
“Don’t think I usually do this on a first date.”
Problem 3: that evil, gaslighting narcissist of a boyfriend.
He tells her: “You are completely distrusting of the entire male species. I guess one couldn't blame you, given your dad's history and your experience with your ex, but I have no desire to get back with an old girlfriend."
Then he kisses his ex.
When she catches him, he gaslights her and says it’s HER fault for being distrusting, and she should just trust him.
So she does.
He’s the editor of their school paper, and both she and ex-girl are writers.
Her boyfriend gives all the good stories to ex-girl.
When she calls him out; he blames her lack of trust in him.
Her boyfriend is constantly “helping” the ex-girl with her writing, going to her house, eating out together alone, touching and giggling.
And he always. Blames. Her trust issues.
And she swallows it.
And stays with him.
Page 140:
“Do you have one of those strong feelings for Ashley?"
"Does it matter?"
A sassy barb immediately comes to mind, but I push the words away and opt for raw honesty instead. "Yes."
"Why?"
I contemplate the beaded necklace hanging down the middle of my shirt.
With a light touch of his fingers, Luke tilts my chin up. "Why does it matter, Bella?"
Why can't I just tell him I like him? (They’re dating, by the way — they’ve BEEN dating.) That when I'm not thinking about a dead bearded lady, clown wigs, and a wacko fiancée, I'm consumed with thoughts of him?
He lets his hand fall only to lay it over one of mine. "Until you can explain that, there's never going to be an us. I have no reason to think it's anything more than jealousy."
I can't seem to find my tongue. I know I need to defend myself here - defend us. How can he just give up on pursuing me? The rules are changing right in this car.
He sighs and brushes his thumb over my palm. "You're a competitive girl. Is this just a game to you?"
(Screw him!!)
Problem 4: the cheating ex pushes her to stay with her current cheating boyfriend.
"Did I ruin you for anyone else?"
Now it's my turn to laugh. "Yeah, your cheating ways are so hot, I can't bear to be with anyone else now." If I were standing in front of the guy, I'd have to gouge out his eyes just on principle.
"No. I mean you were already leery of trusting anyone. And then I pushed you over the edge with all the crap I pulled." His voice is strangely sincere.
"Twice."
"Twice." More silence. "You know, even after two years of dat-ing, you always did hold back."
"If this is about that night at your parents' lake house, I told you I had my boundaries."
"He's not me, but I thought that Luke character was a pretty good guy. You should've seen the way he looked at you at prom. And when he saw you hurt—" Hunter expels a ragged breath. "Never mind. What do I care?"
Problem 5: she keeps intentionally being alone with a man who keeps grabbing her and would clearly rape her if given half a chance, but she keeps INTENTIONALLY being alone with him!?
Page 131:
"Close your eyes. Now, no cheating. I'll be mad if you do." take a step back. "You don't want me angry, do you?" I pucker my lips in a saucy pout.
"No," comes his breathy reply.
"I didn't think so. Because I have a birthday present for you."
"But it's not really my birthday?"
He closes his eyes, and I change places with him, turning him away from the office. "I guess I must've heard wrong then." I place my hands on his shoulders and squeeze. I'm totally washing these hands in bleach when I get home. "How about a birthday shoulder massage!"
"Uh..." His voice is a deflated balloon. "I guess."
Yeah, that's all youre getting. What was he thinking? Creep.
(Yeah, if you keep intentionally putting yourself alone with a rapist, you are GOING TO GET RAPED EVENTUALLY!!)
Cheating gaslighting boyfriend again:
Page 141:
Luke presses his head to the seat. " scare you?" More chuckling,
"That's a good one."
I laugh at his tortured tone. "I'm serious."
I don't know why I'm explaining this, but Kyle left just before
you got there."
"Of course he did." How convenient for Ashley that her brother had to go.
He removes his hand and rests it on the steering wheel. "Until you can trust me and just believe in us, then that's that. Kyle Timmons is a good friend and, frankly, so is Ashley."
"Can't we just—"
"No." In the dark vehicle I see the hard set of his jaw. "When you're ready, we'll talk. But as long as you're afraid of me, I'm not the right person for you."
Those words stab my chest. Who else could be more right for me than this yummy, infuriating boy? Why am I so messed up in the head?
"Are you going to continue seeing Ashley?"
He turns the key, and the 4Runner roars to life. "Good night,
Bella."
"IfI gave you a reason not to, would you?"
"You and I both know you're not going to do that," Luke says as
I open the door. "I've proven I didn't cheat on you."
"Are you kidding? Hanging out with her seems to suggest the opposite."
"You know the truth." He pauses. "You know me."
"I don't know what to believe right now."
*Bella, you chose to let our relationship go, and I respected that.
Istill do. I'm not going to push anything."
"So I have to be the pusher?"
Page 142:
He nods.
"But if you go dating every cute, blonde reporter, it might be too late."
"Definitely a risk." He puts the SUV in drive. "Now you have to figure out if it's worth it."
(That CHEATING, GASLIGHTING BOYFRIEND is a pretty little princess [insult] who COMMANDS his cheated-on-girlfriend to PURSUE HIM or [he threatens] he’ll date the girl he’s cheating on her with.)
So she starts pursuing him.
She pursues her cheating boyfriend for hundreds of pages, culminating in
page 302:
“I can’t take your jealousy anymore. You obviously don't want a relationship from me, aside from friendship, and I've come to realize despite all your firt-ing, that's your final answer."
"But I've been flirting because I-"
"If you don't trust me by now, after all we've been through, then there's nothing I can say or do to help you or change your mind. You have to work this stuff out on your own. But I won't be waiting for you when you get it together." He drags his fingers through his hair and continues wearing a trail in the ground. I realize you've seen a lot of crap and guys have let you down. But I've more than proven myself. I thought at some point you could just follow your heart and see what we had. But now I know you're just not ready. And I'm backing off, okay?" He stops abruptly and drags in a deep breath. "I don't know what I am to you ... but it's not your boyfriend."
I watch a star fall in the sky beyond his shoulder. Leaning back, I push off with my feet and swinging once, I jump out right in front of Luke.
"You're always talking." I shove his shoulder. "Always telling me how it is. Well, do you want to know how I think it is?" His Adam's apple bobs. "I don't think so."
"I think you're the most amazing guy ever." I watch him try to control his look of shock. "You're one of my best friends. You make me laugh, you're scary smart, and I always know you have my back.
And Mr. Editor, more than anything, I want to be your girlfriend.
And maybe I will be looking over my shoulder and waiting for something bad to happen between us, but that's just going to take some time." I step forward until were nearly nose to nose, and I clasp his hands in mine. I'm crazy about you, Luke Sullivan. Tell me you're still into me. Because if you've decided I'm too much trouble, I fully intend to sic Ruthie and her slingshot on you."
His lopsided grin has my heart tripping. "I'm still going to be bossy in journalism."
1. He cheats
2. He gaslights her into believing he’s not cheating, despite flirting and dating in front of her.
3. He gaslights her that it’s HER fault because guys have hurt her in the past
4. He gaslights that it’s HER fault for being “jealous”
5. He forces her to PURSUE HIM like a little princess
6. He gets mad at her for pursuing him because he commanded her to
7. He makes her beg and grovel
And she does it.
And the “happy ending” is her keeping this HORRIBLE EVIL MONSTER of a boyfriend?!?
Pure evil
