Book 2 picked up where book 1 ended, with our heroes recovering from book 1’s shitstorm. I liked that it took a while before book 2’s shitstorm erupted because our heroes deserved their rest. And they deserved to have some of their issues resolved.

It would have broken my heart if Cooper’s kid brothers had to go through another tragedy. One satanic affair is one too many, and I hate it when kids are embroiled. So, I was very glad to see things were improving for Cooper’s family. I was also very glad that the conflict with the local Governing Circle resolved peacefully and unexpectedly neatly. Huzzah! Finally, a government leader who knows what’s what and has an ethical backbone. However, the Virtii, inviolable elemental spirits of judgement, were still on Jessie’s ass. But two out of three ain’t bad.

That said, I was disappointed how the conflict with the Virtii was completely sidelined. While our heroes had more immediate concerns once they got trapped in Texas, it didn’t excuse them from making the Virtii one of their priorities. All they did was run and hide. Instead, it should have been run, hide, and (at some point in downtime) brainstorm some ideas on how to deal with the Virtii for the long term. Our heroes were very lucky the Virtii didn’t intrude again in Texas to make sure our heroes would meet their ends, instead of gambling on Miko to do it for them.

+ the romance

Jessie and Cooper’s sexytimes caught me by surprise because it’s uncommon for urban fantasies to be this explicit, but I didn’t mind. I thought it was good that Jessie and Cooper had a healthy sexual relationship, and wow, did Jessie have a libido. It was refreshing to see a woman as the pursuer and not someone paranormal who needed sex for sustenance.

The scenes allowed me to learn more about their relationship, which left me concerned because our horny duo were damaged characters. The series held a great chance for a wheelbarrow full of romance drama. For the most part, the romance drama didn’t happen. Key word: for the most part. There was a misunderstanding towards the end, but to be fair, our characters were being played by the villain.

+ my least favorite part

My least favorite part of the book was when Miko, book 2’s villain of the week, kicked our heroes’ ass. The demigoddess of death could mind control people and liked to wield sex as a weapon. To remind, our heroes were damaged characters so it was easy to predict how things were going to go. This series really knew how to put out effective villains. To my relief, our heroes were capable and were not greatly injured as my pessimistic side feared, but the rape scenes were more than I could bare.

What was egregious was the ending. The conflict with Miko was left hanging. The ending wasn’t an ending of a book; it was an ending of a chapter.

+ my favorite part

My favorite part of the book was when Jessie practiced her newfound abilities from book 1. She was quick to recognize the side effects, quick to determine she had a little demonic possession going on, and quick to put her abilities to battle despite those obstacles. Most importantly, she didn’t refuse help when it mattered. For instance, she asked her familiar, Palimpsest, to watch over her when she spiritually visited her hellement.

I also liked how Jessie adapted to the new development of her blood family. I was worried the issue would fester because the lack of family is what caused her to be damaged. There were too many issues that could have sent the heroine deep into emo-land, but thankfully, the heroine kept her feet on the ground.

Conclusion

I rate Shotgun Sorceress 3-stars for I liked it. Alas, I do not recommend the series. I finished book 3, the final book of the series, and it was not good.

Shotgun Sorceress is the second installment in the Jessie Shimmer series. It has been a full week since the aftermath of Spellbent when Jessie and her familiar, a ferret named Palimpsest, went into hell to rescue not only her lover Cooper Marron, but his brothers as well. Now, Jessie and crew are waiting a final verdict for their actions that caused more than a few problems, including the fact that Jessie singlehandedly destroyed the mind of the former leader of the Governing Council who was ready and willing to allow Cooper to suffer for eternity in hell, and basically ruined Jessie's life and her reputation in the process.

Jessie lost not her left eye, but her right arm as well during Spellbent and has now come into some seriously powerful magical abilities. Her left arm is now "infected, or cursed" with fire and she is trying to find a so called cure so that she can get her arm back. Her left eye is basically a marble or magical seeing device. And, she is still on the run from the Virtii who want her dead without exception killing one of their own. Jessie's own emotions, namely getting herself horny and having sex with Cooper, make things interesting. Talk about coitus interruptus!

Jessie, Cooper, Warlock, Pal, and Mother Karen actions are called into question by the new leader of the Governing Circle Riviera Jordan. Although it appears that a resolution was put into place, Jessie and crew don't have time to relax and think about what happened before they are once again fighting for their very lives from a demon goddess named Miko.

Here is where things get interesting. First, it appears as though Miko has put the entire city of Cuchillo, Texas under a magical null shield and nobody can escape the town. Second, it appears that Jessie has a brother she knew nothing about and appears to have been lured into a trap by Miko. You can thank her father Magus Ian Shimmer, who, yes, is alive and well and has been hiding from the Virtii for his actions when she was just a child.

This book, in a way, is much bloodier and has more action than Spellbent. There are literally thousands of meat puppets aka zombies that have had their souls ripped from their bodies by Miko and her followers. Naturally, Jessie is the center of everything since Miko wants her as not only her partner in crime, but her lover as well.

Unfortunately, this story does not end the Miko storyline, and it appears to be continued in the next installment Switchblade Goddess which releases 12/27/2011. There also needs to be more than a few questions on how accepting Jessie seems to have become over her father’s sudden appearance in her life, or, how all of a sudden, Jessie has an older brother named Randall who she never knew.

We also have the very unfortunate unanswered questions about Cooper and the Warlocks brothers who were supposed to be put into separate foster homes to be raised as normal as possible.

Last but not least, the whole thing with the Virtii and how they appeared to have chased Jessie and crew into a vortex which took them to Texas and the confrontation with Miko needs to be answered. Was this all planned? Are the Virtii still hunting for Jessie wanting her immediate destruction?

Overall, I actually enjoyed this book. My one head slap, was Jessie's self enjoyment during one point in the story when they are in Texas, and the fact that she appears to have slept with almost everyone boy in grade school for self enjoyment.

This is the second book in the Spellbent series by Snyder. The third book, Switchblade Goddess, is due out sometime in 2011. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I think if you liked the first book, Spellbent, then you will also like this one.

The book is split into two parts. The first part of the book starts right after Spellbent ends. Jessie is under house arrest with Cooper, Pal, and friends. She finds out that she can't control her new fiery hand when her emotions get out of control and ends up going into Fairy with Cooper to strike a deal with the Fairy about his brothers and their renegade situation. The second part of the book Jessie, Cooper, and the Warlock are stranded in a rural Texas town where a very bad devil has them trapped and is playing with them. Well the devil finds out that picking on Jessie is a bad thing.

The book was non-stop action and I devoured it. I also laughed out loud a number of times and made "ew, gross" faces a few times. Like the first book, this one isn't for the faint of heart. There isn't a ton of tenderness here and the descriptions are gory, grisly, and gritty. Even the sex scenes (which there are more of in this book than the first) are pretty hard, fast, and furious. The book is darkly funny though and I enjoyed actually getting to see more of Cooper in this book. It was great to learn more about both Pal and Jessie's new powers. Some of the scenarios that Snyder comes up with are so strange that I have no idea how she thinks up this stuff; I am glad she does though because it always keeps me guessing.

This book reminds me a lot of the Sandman Slim books in tone, but with a female lead. I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the situations, the awesome powers Jessie is wielding. I really enjoyed all of the characters they are all tough and gritty and fun to read about. The pacing was amazing and I was never ever bored. The book is pretty darn funny at parts too, but in a dark way.

Overall an absolutely fabulous addition to this series. If you loved the first one you will love this one. If the first one was too gory and graphic for you...well this one will be too. If you have read the Sandman Slim books by Richard Kadrey and enjoyed those, I think you would really enjoy this series too. Loved it and I can't wait for the third book to come out!

I think I may have marked this novel down a bit more than a normal person would have because I enjoyed the first book so much and am very disappointed in this one. The novel begins cleaning up the loose ends that the first novel presented. It felt like a chore to me, like I had to take out the trash and I would rather be playing video games. I assume it's necessary, but I wanted to get to the actual plot. Instead of building up to a great story, the characters are thrown into a portal and fall headfirst into the main plot about halfway through the novel. If this plot would have been set up in a logical chain of events I may have cared about what was going on, but instead the characters stumbled upon it. They instantly cared about saving some random strangers instead of just escaping, and I didn't feel the same way. I thought it was just another bump in the road on the trip to the real plot. Everything in this book felt thrown together with no sense of order. The characters are interesting, the world is interesting, but this book was just messy, and this plot was simply uninteresting to me. I know there is potential here, and this is one of the few UF series where the main character already has a boyfriend and is faithful (mostly-except in times of demon possession) to them. That is refreshing, and different, but adds the relationship drama to the table that tends to grate on my nerves. However, I can handle all of that, and I would love to read another book in this series that progresses in a fashion that makes sense. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road and the next book is enjoyable to me.

I'd rate it a bit better than average. I like the realism of Jessie's rough language, and sex drive, but don't read this if some crudeness will put you off. There is a lot of action (not just the sex kind) but it ends very anticlimactically. I still like her former familiar, Pal, a lot. I'm not entirely sure about her boyfriend, Cooper, yet; he still hasn't been show to his advantage. But I'm looking forward to seeing what developes in the next book with that, as well as with Jessie's family. So far they seem pretty suspect as well, I hope they don't end up breaking her heart. Overall, I like the creativity, it isn't just like every other series. And I really like the cover. It isn't quite as stunning as the cover of the first book, but once again it totally showcases the book and the characters. From Jessie's magical eye and hand, scratches, burns and opera glove, to Pal's big, scary legs, it's unique, original art and I really appreciate that the publisher went to the effort.

This is the second book in series following 'Spellbent' which I enjoyed very much. This one not so much as I felt the storyline was not as filled out stimulating enough as far as a layered plot was concerned. Don't get me wrong it was 'ok' but nothing special, the majority of the book is chasing down a soul sucking demon who has a her eyes on Jessie. She finds out more about her family & her spidery familiar who is one of the best characters. I would of liked to have seen Jessies relationship with 'Blue' developed & her problems with the guardian spirits explored, also it annoyingly ends on a cliffhanger but not enough of one that I will bother to buy the next book in the series.
Disappointed.....

I gave this book a chance because I thought there was a chance the author had improved between the first book and this one, but I was dissapointed. I wasn't satisfied with any part of this story really, and I have no intention of reading any more installments.

More of the same. A quick fluffy read. Somewhere between urban fantasy and upbeat horror -- ghastly monsters that our protagonist smashes her way through without leaving the reader too disturbed. Smuttier than the usual for the genre, but definitely not in a romance-novel sort of way.

This will make no sense if you haven't read the previous one in the series. I read that one a year or so ago and had some disorientation reminding myself who was who and where we were.

After the hell (literally) that Jessie went through to save her love,Cooper, she’s ready to take it easy for a bit and adjust to her new powers. We’re talking about Jessie Shimmer here,so you can bet that’s probably not going to happen. Her familiar,Pal,has changed from his cute, little, furry, ferret self into a giant creature somewhere between a ferret,a bear, and a spider, and Jessie is setting things on fire with her flaming hand (yes, literally, makes gettin’ some lovin’ kinda tough). Also, portals are opening up willy nilly in midair, and her long lost father (who she’s long thought dead) is trying to get in touch with her. After meeting with Riviera Jordon (of the powers that be),to discuss the recent events that resulted in brain damage for her diabolical brother,Jessica,Cooper,Warlock, and Pal are sucked into a portal while being chased by the Virtii (wicked, wise, winged things.) After landing rather painfully in a huge pile of hay, they soon discover they’re in the tiny town of Cuchillo,TX,and something is very, very wrong.

An irresistibly sexy Japanese demon (and soul stealer) named Miko has taken over the tiny Texas town, turning people into zombies (with nasty diseases,no less) and blocking magic so any Talents in the town can’t use their powers. However,a group of townspeople have banded together and with Jessie, they prepare to make a stand against Miko. There are a few issues, though. Jessie just might be inhabited by a devil (no biggie, right),that turns her into a berserker killing machine (think River when she fights the Reavers in Serenity, and you get the picture),her flame hand is acting up (to say the least),and the lady that heads the resistance might be a teeny bit loony (the place is swarming with magic cats of her making.) Yes,you read that right. Magic cats that enable the townspeople to use what powers they might have,in spite of Miko’s magic block. And they’re super cute too. Also, don’t forget the sexual powers that Miko wields on men and women alike. Jessie’s been to hell and back. Surely she can defeat Miko, right?

Ms. Snyder brings the crazy with Shotgun Sorceress, and like Spellbent,it’s all kinds of awesome. There are lots of horror elements woven into this one too,and the author’s talent to bring the creep is showcased to great effect. The town of Cuchillo reminded me of something out of Stephen King, and did I mention hordes of meat puppets? Pretty scary stuff! The action is nonstop and the author’s imagination seems to know no bounds. If you haven’t yet discovered this series, you’re in for a treat! Switchblade Goddess comes out in December, and I plan on dropping everything to read it. Fans of UF and horror can’t go wrong with this exciting, scary, and highly imaginative series!

Shotgun Sorceress is the second book in the Jessie Shimmer series by Lucy A. Snyder and a Fantasy from Ballantine Books and Del Rey.

Book Blurb:

Burning Down The House

For Jessie Shimmer, everything changed when she went to hell and back to save her lover,Cooper Marron. After tangling with supernatural forces and killing an untouchable spirit lord, Jessie finds herself gifted - or perhaps cursed - with dark powers. And when she and Cooper make love, her pleasure throes light the whole house on fire. What is a sorceress to do?

Jessie is about to find out. The circumstances of her birth, the mystery of a father she never knew, and the help of a cuddly ferret turned fearsome monster have made Jessie not just an outlaw from mundane society but an accidental revolutionary in the magic realm. Encountering portals stitched into thin air and a fiercely sexy soul harvester, Jessie rushes headlong among enemies, horrors, wonders, and lovers into a place of self-discovery - or destruction.

My thoughts:

Jessie Shimmer is a completely unique individual. She rushes in to save those she loves - heedless of the danger to herself and sometimes without a clear plan of action. She flies by the seat of her pants - and often ends up flat on her a$$ - but in the end - she gets the job done.

Not much time has passed since she entered her boyfriends hell and pulled him and his younger brothers out safely. This feat cost her an arm and an eye. Now Jessie has an enchanted stone replacing her missing eye - and her missing arm - well, it’s been replaced with hell fire. Kinda makes it hard to cuddle.

Oh and she killed a Virtii - they are like the bosses of the magically inclined. Now they are pretty ticked at Jessie and want her dead.

When a group of Virtii chase Jessie and her friends into a portal the group end up in the middle of a Texas that has been taken over by a nasty Japanese demon. In order to get herself, her friends and the remaining towns people to safety - Jessie just has to kill the demon.

Not a problem....right?

Shotgun Sorceress is a terrific installment to a series that rocks out loud. Wildly unpredictable - I love it.

I give Shotgun Sorceress 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book.

Jessie Shimmer is a love her or hate her addition to the urban fantasy world, between her crudeness and the dark, dark nature of her stories you'll find very few readers taking a middle road. Shotgun Sorceress is the follow up to Lucy A. Snyder's Spellbent and the first thing you should know is that Lucy's a tried and true horror writer. It's evident from her treatment of magic (which really is more like the dark and twisted, old school occult novels than the twee magical worlds you can find today) and the focus on extra dimensional devils and demons (and even the supposed worldly peace keepers who themselves are not good beings) that magic is not something to be trifled with. Just being a Talent in Snyder's world makes you tougher and more raw than mundanes.

In the first book Jessie Shimmer had to rescue her boyfriend from an hell dimension personally cooked up for him and his family by one of their own. She took on angels, the ruling council of local magic-wielders and gave up a lot of herself (namely her eye and her arm) to get Cooper back. This book allows Jessie no rest as the ruler magic users are still after her for her actions, as are the crystaline-angel-not-really-good-guys who enforce all the magical rules. In fact the latter appear to set Jessie and her family up, sending them into a sealed pocket which imprisons a demon that has taken over a small Texas town and turned it into a post apocalyptic dystopia.

Shotgun Sorceress has a zombie-apocalypse feel, without ever hitting on the tropes of that subgenre. Instead it stands out as something entirely its own, neither its creatures or magic system mimic other books. It's a bold, energetic, vivid and, yes, horrific, addition to the paranormal craze. Wild writing will keep readers guessing. The unique world and characters make Shotgun Sorceress a stand out wickedly enjoyable fantasy story.

This book picks up almost immediately after the first novel. Only a few days have passed. Well, the first few pages start at the end of the book, but that's not a big deal.

Liked
- I'm so glad they fleshed out Cooper. I am beginning to see why she would go through all the trouble to be with him. Even if he was a raging ball of testosterone for half of the book, I at least saw a side of him that wasn't all about either sex or money.

- Jessie's clearly obvious impediments. It all works out in the end, but having a flaming hand has got to be the worst thing ever. Especially since it jizzes napalm like ectoplasm when she orgasms.

- The author has seamlessly blended several elements that wouldn't coherently go together and made them work. There are racist GI's, demon cats, zombie showdowns, and soul-sucking piranha jelly. It's a melting pot for good fun.

- The background stories were told so well, without feeling like there was a break in the action. In fact, they were some of the more exciting parts.

- The author isn't afraid to dive straight into uncomfortable topics. This can be good, this can be bad. Sometimes it left me scratching my head. One scene jumps from a prepubescent rape attempt to prepubescent gibbage.

Disliked
- So much sex. This book was overflowing with sex in all forms. It didn't deter from the story (except for that brief respite in the van with her left hand). It was just everywhere.

- The anti-climax cliffhanger. This must be how the Mythbusters feel when their experiment doesn't explode in ALL OF THE FIRE.

I would have rated this book four stars. The story had hit it's stride and the characters were going with the flow. I'm seriously docking it a star for that fizzle-out of a cliffhanger.

Liked:
* Jessie continues to be asskicking and just plain awesome. She is a woman who does things. She doesn't sit around and ponder her feelings nor does she put on the "I'm constantly a smartass which makes me a badass" attitude endemic to UF/PNR. She just IS a badass. Like I said, she does things. Awesome things.
* Learning more about the characters from what they do instead of their thoughts and feelings is nice. I like the author's style.
* The world and system(s) of magic are really fun to read about. They aren't overly explained so if you like everything spelled out for you, you probably won't enjoy it as much as I did. That being said, the world and its magic is explained enough to keep you up with the story. You're not left in the lurch. Ms. Snyder has found the happy medium between overexplaining and leaving the reader scratching his/her head.

Liked Less:
* A few of the characters, especially Jessie's family, just seemed kinda dropped in there. I would have liked to get more information about them.
* The ending seemed to happen kind of quickly.

Also, this book ends on a semi-cliffhanger. Some people don't like that sort of thing. I personally don't mind it. I will definitely be following Jessie's further adventures.

Edited to add: If you have not read Spellbent, the first book in the series, you will likely be completely lost. Do yourself a favor and read that first. :-)

So I dug the first book in this series. I sort of liked Jessie Shimmer, a warped and damaged young lady with a penchant for shooting off her mouth and bad judgment. Pal was the equalizer and I felt for him in the first book.

Warlock was an interesting character and so was Mother Karen.

The world building was pretty sweet and the idea that magic isn't just faeries and fireflies was a breath of fresh air. The grimness, the terror and the grittiness of the premise was great.

Not so much in this book. Granted, I didn't get far with reading and once I got past a certain page I pretty much skimmed to see if anything caught my eye that would induce me to continue. Plenty made me want to stop and I'm not too upset that I didn't continue.

The first book, while I liked the premise etc., I thought it was a mediocre book with great potential. The second book stayed mediocre for me. Jessie became grating and way too selfish for me, Cooper became this passive-aggressive character (literally) while incidents involved Miko and Warlock drove me crazy. It seemed a bit out of character and very much like a betrayal. Which would've been fine. If it had made sense to me.

Again, I would probably read another series by the author (her writing style is good) but this one just isn't for me anymore.

This one picks up right where SPELLBENT ended and then takes off in a completely new and unexpected direction. I'd say that it's possible to enjoy the current volume without having read the previous one, but it would probably help a lot to have the full back story going in. (Why is Pal a big spider monster instead of a ferret, what happened to Jessie's arm and eye, etc.)It's actually two stories with a fairly well-defined transition. One can picture the Hollywood-style hype that used to characterize advertisements for Westerns: the caption might say, "A story so wild and big that Ohio couldn't hold it all so they had to move to Texas!" Anyway, many of the characters return from SPELLBENT, but a good cast of new and interesting ones are introduced. The plot is tight, even if it doesn't always go where you want it to, and it's an exciting and fast-paced read, though neither light nor too easy. There are some scenes of a graphic and uncomfortable nature, and some explicit sex. I don't think that it fits comfortably into any traditional niche genre such as paranormal romance or urban fantasy or traditional horror, and I just noticed that there is no such categorization on the spine. There are some resonances from all of these, resulting in a refreshing and entertaining blend. All in all, a terrific read.

This is definitely a bit more randy than the first book. Everyone is sexed up for each other, and throw in some need to do some butt kicking, you've got a great formula for some good adult fantasy.

Jessie has got to sort all the loose ends from the first book, Spellbent, as this book begins. And there were a lot of threads. So, it starts off a bit slow, but necessary. Than the fun begins. The story jumps to Texas as Jessie and her boy crew have got to do some more monster head cracking, but this time it's a female Japanese demon.

I enjoyed this one, but am disappointed that Pal is now a weird cross between spider/bear/ferret. Though, it is interesting that Jessie can ride him like a giant flying horse. There is a bit of a love triangle angle too, and really some creative plot development that takes the reader to all kinds of different places. It's worth the read if you enjoyed the first book. I'll be happy when the third book is out.

3.5 stars. The book started out slow for me. The end picked up and saved the book from a for sure 3 star. The end read more like the entire book of book 1 did. Fast paced, lots of action. The beginning, the whole early Cuchillo thing, was slow in the extreme. I easily set the book aside and didn't feel compelled to pick it up for a day or so. Still, I like the characters, the heroine, the idea of the story. Will be reading the next when it comes out.

SPOILERS: Reminders for me. Miko ate the Goadling that was possessing Jessie, which caused Miko to take off for a while. Since she is not defeated, Jessie has decided to stick around and try to get rid of her. Jessie and Warlock had a little coerced thing while under Miko's influence. Cooper walked in on the end. Everyone is uncomfortable now.

Shotgun Sorceress,

I strongly suggest you read the previous book in this series (Spellbent) prior to reading this book.

I've been anxiously awaiting this sequel ever since the last installment ended.
Shotgun Sorceress takes-off right where Spellbent left-off and never slowed down! Lucy Snyder's imagination is incredible. This book was exciting, creative and magically action-packed. I was on the edge of my seat through the most of the book and I completely devoured this story.

I highly recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy readers. I look forward to the next book Switchblade Goddess due out 2011.

I also recommend:
Grave Witch (Alex Craft, Book 1)
Darkfever (Fever Series, Book 1)
Bitter Night: A Horngate Witches Book

This really let me down. I was so blown away by the first book and thrilled to get my hands on the second. But that was where the excitement ended. This felt like a crap shoot, just throw a bunch of stuff in here, recycle some old things etc. I don't know where all her creativity went, maybe into the first book and that was it. But this was just boring and had no core, no rhythm to it. We still don't et to see the relationship between Jessie and Cooper. Secreting him away in a hell in the first book, ok I can understand how we don't see much of it. But in the second, making him distance? Ok, that's just being lazy so you don't have to come up with a relationship. I don't want to read the third book but I'm hoping she recovers her creativity there.

This is a very good new urban fantasy series. The magic-using heroine Jessie is funny in an offbeat way, the stories original, and the characters interesting. This second installment in the series starts exactly where the first book ended. Jessie has just saved her boyfriend from a hell dimension and accidentally resurrected his 5 baby brothers with him, giving her necromatic side effects that aren't pleasant. She's not sure what the governing council is going to do to her, but then as soon as it seems things are working out, she gets dumped in a magical void town that's been taken over by a very evil demon, and she's going to have to take it on to get herself and her friends out.

That ending was kind of WHAT? But I really liked the book overall. It would have been really painful for me to wait to read the next book but fortunately I won't have to. It was a really messed up cliffhanger.
Anyway...This book is interesting but not much in itself. Not a good read as a standalone for sure. The story picks up right after the end of the first instalment and ends abruptly. I'm guessing it's just the middle piece of the main plot and didn't bother me much but I can see people not liking it much.

Shotgun Sorceress is the fun-filled sequel to Spellbent. Jessie Shimmer continues to fight against forces that are moving against her and her friends. She is coerced into fighting a powerful succubus demon in rural Texas, and it is fun to see her outside her city element. We learn more about Jessie's character and past, and Jessie is forced to confront some of her own demons. Shotgun Sorceress was enjoyable and quick, and just what I felt like reading at the time. I'll definitely read the next book.

Book 2 of this series, Jessie spends a good bit of time dealing with the fallout of her actions from the previous book, "Spellbent." Then she, Cooper, Warlock and Pal get maneuvered into going through a portal and end up trapped in a small Texas town quarantined by the powers that be in order to keep a powerful demon contained.

I like Jessie. The eye and "hand" are very cool.

She has very course language, and there is a good deal of graphic violence and graphic violent sex.

Okay, so Jessie Shimmer went to hell and back in "Spellbent" to rescue her lover Cooper. That adventure cost Jessie her left hand and left eye. Oh, and she found out she has dark powers. So what does a sorceress do for an encore? In Jessie's case, she tangles with a soul harvester. An insanely sexy soul harvester. This Jessie Shimmer novel was a real treat. Enthralling, erotic, and just plain great! I'm looking forward to the next book in this series, "Switchblade Goddess".

The first book in the series set up a complex world, so this book needed addition info to put the reader back into it and I don't think it did. Jess, Cooper, and Warlock end up in Texas and have to deal with another disaster. It also ends in a big cliffhanger, so little is resolved by the end of the book.

Whereas the first book in this series was original and unexpected for urban fantasy, this was exactly like all of the rest of the chaff out there. I don't think there was an inch of character development, but there was a hefty amount of literary porn. I will read the third book, but only because of the love I had for the first book.

Still fun, but more... intense? than its predecessor. Or maybe I just got blindsided by a certain character name and... Yeah, I dunno, but of course I'm'a read the next one too. It's in my phone and everything.

I liked this book better than the first one in terms of action and plot. The story was better with this one, more exciting. I like the story with the Japanese death goddess, very interesting. Can't wait to see what's in store for the next book.
