I really like Rachel Allen's recipes, and the way she describes the steps involved. Lovely illustrations and some very appealing recipes. I find her recipes turn out well, so I do follow them, although I also adapt them...:)

Am still at mum's and making use of her bookshelves! I came across her copy of Rachel Allen's Home Cooking, which I remember buying her 15yrs ago, it's nice to see it dog-eared I know my hard earned cash was put to good use then! We have revisited this and made a few things together, we remembered making the rhubarb muffins and the spicy prune and apple muffins, the latter required the use of sour milk but Rachel helpfully tells you how to make it if you have none of your own. Take ordinary milk, or you can use soya or rice milk, heat it gently until it's warm (using the quantities given in the recipe) and then remove from the heat and add the juice of half a lemon and leave at room temperature overnight and then use in your recipes the next day. Easy really! (Actually left it on the shelf in the pantry as kitchen was really warm).

After feeding those to my father and visitors we moved on to the spotted dog loaf, which is just making dough and adding in some of the sour milk from yesterday (we made enough to cover this and the muffins), and kneading it gently then baking it in the oven for about 40mins. You can make this into spotted scones and cook for about half of the time. The spots are just sultanas, raisins or currants! We've now made a few other dishes too and thoroughly enjoyed all of them!

This book has the ability to actually make you believe that Rachel is by your side, talking you through the recipes - just like she does in her television programme. This book takes you through a selection of recipes for Breakfasts, through to Suppers and then snacks, treats and sweets. Also pureed Baby food. And a basic section on how to make your own chicken stock, ketchup, pastry bread rolls etc. A really good book for anyone from beginner to a confident cook. A great book to have to inspire you and to remind you of " how to do things" give you ideas etc. Lovely photography to encourage you as well.

I read alot of cookery books but I rarely bookmark as many recipes in them as I have in this one. A very practical book with lots of recipes that you actually want to make. After cooking my way through this book, the food has been good, the ingredients easy to source and the methods simple to follow. A great, very useful addition to my kitchen book shelf.

A great looking basic cook book with lots of great tips and variations. Good place for any beginner cook to start but with lots of inspiration for the more accomplished cook. Great for every day home cooking.
