Meanwhile kids are disappearing and the boys have got to find them, to prove there is danger lurking in the sewer, threatening the whole town. But really going down there, that's something else...
I have a special place in my heart for the artwork of this series, as I never read any of them until last year but have owned some of these for over half of my life (this is one of them) and have just adored these earlier illustrations. And am I ever so glad to find out that the one with one of the best covers, of which is alien based, is a banger. Lemme just credit the consistency of this Fright Time alone; literally every story was great, for their own reasons, with the crown jewel being the final one in here which is a slight homage to The Blob so fuck yeah. Here are my ratings and reviews for each story:
Forest of Fear (by Anne Wolfe) - 9/10. What a great start. Being the cover story, this one was all about aliens (my hyperfixation), and it delivered on everything you’d come to expect from kids horror alien material and goes to some crazy places, like disturbing & violating human experimentation alongside a brief but interesting humans-and-alien friendship. This was awesome, only held back by being a bit of a headache at times. Ending was sad, the good kind. Again, impressive start.
Ghost Twin (by Mark Valadez) - 8.5/10. Basically everything you’d want out of a twin kids’ horror story. I have issues with the story being a bit too long with obvious padding here and there, but other than that, this was a nice time with a solid ending. Great idea overall, loved the relationship between the main and his ghost twin and how that played out sweetly. ‘Nother hit.
Something’s in the Sewer (by Shannon Donnelly) - 10/10. Shannon… you cooked. The “something,” which I don’t wanna say what it is but it’s pretty cool and has a super interesting explanation behind it + is an entity of my nightmares, is a weird but awesome threat. The two main kids are really good characters for this being a sixty page story, and I loved their relationship. The climax is insane and brings forth one of the most heroic character points I’ve ever seen for this genre. Absolute fucking chad. The build up, the ending, and the idea alone—all great. The only thing here that I’m not entirely sure on is the whole ant stuff (not a typo), but even then it doesn’t matter and made way for a big moment. An amazing short story, no further comment.
Overall, 9.5/10. Bonus points for consistency, this was a jarring step up from my first Fright Time, probably due to the fact that every story is a new author. Loved this collection, possibly the best anthology I’ve ever read just off rating range alone. Guess it was the Right Time for Fright Time lolz.
Forest of Fear was my favorite, since I like alien stories. Ghost Twin was alright. Something's In The Sewer was alright as well. I did like it having a scientific explanation, even though it was kinda far fetched. All in all, a decent addition to the series.
I loved it! I am 20 years old and am enjoying these horror stories for young readers. The author really knows how to get you into it where you feel you cannot ever put the book down...
