Andrew Jackson was the 7th president of the United States of America. He was a great president. Before Andrew Jackson was born his mother and father lived across the sea from America, they lived in Ireland. Ireland at that time was ruled by King George the III. They did not appreciate King George the III so they decided to move to America. There Andrew Jackson was born. He could read words when he was 5 and when he was 8 he could read long words that most adults did not know. He was a smart boy. They called him Andy for a nickname. Andy also went to school at Waxhaw Church. He climbed trees and he went fishing, he hunted deer and bobcats. In 1828 Andrew Jackson ran for president and he won against John Quincy Adams. Once when he got elected he hosted a party in the White House for the head of other governments. they gobbled cake and they gulped ice cream and orange juice. Glasses and dishes and cups began to break. Chairs fell and a table crashed. Andrew Jackson had to bolt out of the back door so that he would not be caught. He was a great president and many people liked him. He did not want the American Bank which was ruled by 5 rich and powerful people, he did not want there to be an American Bank but he had to fight against Vice President and eventually he won. June 8, 1845 at six o'clo in the afternoon he died. His slaves cried and the owner of Texas and his son came, and the owner of Texas said 'Son, remember that you have looked upon a face of a great president, ANDREW JACKSON'.
This is one of a series of history books from the 1960s produced for children. I am lucky enough to own most of the set and my twelve year old son read this and decided to make Andrew Jackson the subject of his year end speech for sixth grade. He liked this book enough to read it four times and plans to read the rest of the series during the summer.
This book is an excellent introduction to America's seventh president, showing the personality and bravery of Andrew Jackson. Our country has really done a disservice to our youth by not teaching history as it actually happened anymore. Andrew Jackson inspires pride and confidence. We wouldn't have a country without him.
