This was pretty good for a teen chick lit book. Several twists kept it interesting, and I didn't expect the last twist at the end. It kept me guessing, which I appreciate!

Overview of the story
A girl named Hazel always dreamed of being in with the popular crowd. There was a group of girls named Sylvia, the group leader, Carolyn, Megan, and Ellen. They were called the PLD's Pretty Little Devils. They were the most popular girls in the school. Hazel would do anything to be in that group. One day at lunch Sylvia bumped into Hazel throwing diet Coke all over her. Sylvia felt so bad that she offered to pay the cost of the shirt but Hazel told her not worry about it. So Sylvia invited her to a party. Then, before Hazel's eyes she was at a party with the PLD's she couldn't believe it, and before she knew it she was siting at their table at lunch. The PLD's have a tradition, every time one of girls babysat they would pull a prank on them, and let me tell you the pranks were very scary. Every so often the girls would get these really creepy text messages talking about death and the person was threatening them. But then as the story went on, something terrible happened.........

Why I rated the book
The reason why I rated this book with all five stars is because I thought that this book was so different and I never read anything like it before. This book kept me going every time I needed to stop I couldn't, all I wanted to do was read, read, read. When I look for a book I look for a little Mystery but not to much of it, and I also look for teen drama and this book is both and that's why I liked this book.

Plot
- the plot of the story was there was a killer among them and people were being betrayed

I tried really, really hard to read this over a 2 year period. I put it down, tried reading chapters inbetween other books... just about everything. I just couldn't get interested in this book.

I'm not sure why this didn't catch on with me because it's not like I dislike Holder's work or that it's poorly written. I'm reading another one of her books (Possession) which is decent enough. It's also not like I can't get into YA fiction- it's actually one of my most favorite things to read. For whatever reason, this just didn't trip my trigger.

I think what really did this in was that it was pretty obviously inspired by the Pretty Little Liars series. There's nothing wrong with writing a similarly themed book but Holden borrowed pretty liberally from the series to the point where the books share most of a title. (Pretty Little ____) With these many similarities I can't help but compare the two, which let's be honest here: PLL is the far stronger book. I know I'm not the only person who had a problem with this.

You should still check this out and decide for yourself but I recommend that you get this from the library rather than buy it outright. I might try again to finish this book, but not anytime soon.

Pretty Little Devils is definitely a must-read. A girl named Hazel arrives at a new school and becomes part of the most popular clique in the school. Every thing's fine .. every thing's going great, right? Just wait and see. When jealousy takes over, it twists up her life.

The author an excellent author because when i began reading the book, i couldn't put it down. To tell you the truth, I stayed up very late to finish this book. The author puts suspense in the plot and keeps you guessing. The author wrote it to describe how some teenagers would act and think in their head about little situations like jealousy.

The story really helped me realize that everything "good" most likely comes with a price and it kind of scared me what the girl in the story did because of her jealous self. This is a horror story, but the author still adds a little bit of romance in it. It is one that must be read to everyone. I loved this book because there was a surprise hidden in every chapter!

i love this book so much! it kept me asking for more and more! i absolutely couldn't stop reading this book. if you like reading the gossip girls, you would enjoy this book too. But, it's different than gossip girl because it gives an edge to it that makes it's mysterious ans scary. it's about this girl name Hazel. she wants to be popular, and she has this major crush on the new jock. one day Sylvia, the leader of the PLD(Pretty Little Devil)accidently knocked into Hazel. this gave Hazel a chance to join the group because Sylvia ask her to join. in order to join this group, you would have to do a lot of dares. one day the PlDs reveal Breona Wu was found killed and murder. no one knows who did. the PLD suddenly gets weird and scary text messages. it gets even more interesting as you read along. if you want to know more of what's going to happen next, than you should read this book.

***One of my favorite reads of 2010!***

- My Description -
Hazel Stone would give anything to be one of The Pretty Little Devils or PLDs.

The head cheese, Sylvia finally recruits Hazel.

Bad things begin to happen to Hazel.
Threatening phone calls. Harassing emails. Animals die. People die. Terrible stuff.

- My Review -
Wow, this book reminds me of one of the reasons why I hated school. The elites, cliques and peer pressure.

All in all, it was a good mystery. My suspicions kept changing of who I thought the culprit was.

Regardless, It was entertaining. =)

Pretty Little Devils by Nancy Holder

Pretty Little Devils by Nancy Holder is a realistic fiction mystery. It puts its readers into the very center of Brookhaven California High school. A place ruled by the sassiest group in the school: THE PRETTY LITTLE DEVILS.
The PLDs have been together since the 5th grade. Sylvia Orly is the tyrannical head of the group, followed by Carolyn Bosch, the lesbian, Megan Williams, the fashionista, and Ellen Schmidt, the misfit of the group. Breeona Wu is the second most popular girl at Brooykhaven, after Sylvia. She is also the arch enemy to the PLD!
Any girl in the school would kill to just be noticed by the PLDs. But Hazel Stone doesn’t have to kill anyone… She is out of place with her so “friends”. They are lame wannabes that try too hard to look cool. Hazel never even considered being a PLD she just wanted more out of high school than hanging with people that don’t understand her, people she doesn’t even consider real friends but more of an obligation. Hazel wants her high school days to be something to remember. And boy does she get her wish! One faithful day at lunch Hazel’s diet coke is spilled all over her new outfit by none other than the queen bee herself! Sylivia invites Hazel to one of the PLDs famous parties. Instantly Hazel is in the group. She is pretty, funny, witty, smart, and just what the group was looking for! Hazel is ecstatic to be leaving the misfits behind! Everything seems to be going great. Hazel has friends she actually likes and has gotten the guy of her dreams Matty Vardeman! But things don’t stay jazzy for too long. The girls began getting creepy threatening text from an anonymous person known only as “YRSECRETEFRIEND” saying things like “U slut. Someone should stab u. u ho u deserve 2 die.” And “Tag ur dead”, after classmates begin to come up dead the first to go is Breeona Wu, and all heads turn to the PLDs. More students die and heads and relationships began to spin. The girls know its someone in their once unbreakable crew. But it’s too bad they find out after it’s too late…
I thought this really was a great book. It kept me so on the edge of my seat. I am proud to say I stayed up all night, and finished it in 24hrs! I know I may have said this before but it DID NOT have a single boring moment. In a lot of books the authors spend time talking about the crinkling leaves on a tree, and how delicately the snow fell on their lovers hand. Nancy Holder wrote a hardcore mystery, and it only took 250 pages. It was short and sassy, but great. The fact that it was so short and entertaining was a great strength to the book. And it was also a weakness because I wish there would have been more e to read. I loved the twisted betrayal and killing in this book (I totally recommend to Mrs. Baltz!)
Hazel wanted to be popular so bad, and didn’t really think that even popular girls have problems. She didn’t really know the group, just what they appeared to be. And the lesson she learned incorporates one of the themes of this novel: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Hazel wished for popularity and she got it. Along with that popularity came a lot of other things she never imagined.
Another theme incorporated in this novel is the old saying what you are looking for may be right under your nose. The killer and the “secret pal” was right under everyone’s nose the whole time but they were to wound up in themselves to notice. But they never thought to suspect them, “I’m right here, but they can’t see me. They’re too caught up in there stupid little lives. Too bad. I’m their worst nightmare. They’ve had their fair warning. It’s show time!” the secret pal was right and this lead to a lot of character downfall.

Pretty Little Devils
By Nancy Holder
256 pp. New York, New York.
Razorbill, $14.99
ISBN: 1-59514-030-1

Most realistic fiction novels, such as The Clique, are the same; they have the same boring plot. You can tell how the story is going to end and the characters are boring and dull. If you’re interested in reading a book that has twists and turns, Pretty Little Devils by Nancy Holder is perfect for you. Just by reading the blurb, you’ll feel eager to read it! The characters are far fetched and the plot is entertaining since it keeps you at the edge of your seat. You won’t be able to guess how it’s going to end. After the first couple of chapters, you’d be surprised at how different this book is compared to others.
All Hazel ever wanted to do was become one of the PLD’s, also known as the Pretty Little Devils, which is the most popular clique at school. They’re rich, popular, and they’re always the center of attention. She believed they were way better than her “lame” friends she always sat at lunch with. At least, that’s what she thought at first. Hazel takes you through the journey of how she became one of the PLD’s, thanks to Sylvia, the head of the PLD’s, and her fellow members who saw something in her. Of course, Hazel accepts the invitation to become one of them, but realizes what she got into.
Everything is going very well for Hazel; she has a new boyfriend that she has been crushing on for months, has “A-List” friends, and has tons of popularity. She didn’t know she’d have enemies, such as Breona Wu, who hates the PLD’s guts. She also didn’t know she’d be involved in a series of murders, caused by one of the PLD’s.
Holder’s new novel is much different than her regular mystery books. Her style of writing is much more sophisticated and intriguing, although it doesn’t grab your attention in the first two chapters. To make things interesting, she also allows you to read the Instant Messages the original four PLD’s send and receive. You’ll probably think you know who the mastermind behind the murders is, but you’d have to think again.
The lesson of Pretty Little Devils keeps showing up throughout the book. It’s not an uncommon lesson, but it is an important one. Be yourself, no matter what. Hazel tries to hide her true self whenever she hangs out with the PLDs, which gets her into many problems. Changing yourself to get people to like you never ends up nicely, and this book shows it.
Reading this book would take a very short time, since it’s one of those types of books you don’t want to put down. You’d be satisfied after you read Pretty Little Devils and would want to recommend it to your friends. Many wonder why there isn’t a sequel to the book, and here’s the answer: nothing is better than the first book of a series.

Hazel Stone has always wanted to be popular and it looks like it might be her chance. When the Pretty Little Devils, the most popular girls in school (in constant competition with the cheerleaders), suddenly take Hazel under their wing a whole new world is opened up for her. She attracts the attention of super hot new guy in school, Matty Vardeman, she gets invited to all the best parties, and everyone in school wants to be her. But there's an underside to being a PLD. The group is insanely tight knit, to the point where having their own lives is almost impossible, and group leader Sylvia Orly keeps all the rest of them under her thumb. What they are individually isn't nearly as strong as what they can be as a group. But when they start getting mysterious and threatening phone calls and texts and violent acts start shaking the school it becomes clear that it's time Hazel looks around and sees that there is more going on than she realizes.

The characters in this book really aren't bad. They're not as cliche as one might imagine. The popular girls have a babysitting ring where they earn their money, the popular cheerleader seems a little mentally imbalanced, and it was hard to tell who was sweet and who was wicked at times. Actually, it read as a sort of mix between 'Mean Girls' and 'Scream', with a hearty dose of 'Pretty Little Liars' thrown in. Actually, it's plot reads very similarly to 'PLL' so I can see fans picking it up for that reason (and it's very similar name), but 'Pretty Little Devils' had its own stuff going for it. There were bodies stacking up by the end, creepy threatening phone calls, and popularity struggles. This would make a really good stylish movie.

Unfortunately, it's a book. And as such it reads like it was written by a bunch of fifteen year olds who each wrote chapters and threw them together. In reality it was written by Nancy Holder, who I am relatively unfamiliar with expecting that she wrote the Watcher's Guide for 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. Which was my favorite show. She falls into the traps that I've seen a lot of YA authors do; write for teens in a way that the book could have been written BY them. I think it's much better when a book is written FOR them. There are plenty of YA books that are written well, and I think that's the right way. Write as something they could aspire to, not as something they could turn in for a Power of the Pen competition.

It did leave a lot of unanswered questions that bothered me. The motivations behind a lot of the actions weren't particularly clear and the explanatory part of these sorts of stories is left off. Which is refreshing and necessary for the twist but frustrating all the same. Overall it was a compelling read that didn't take very long so sure, give it a go. But if you choose not to, you're not missing much.

The book Pretty Little Devils a group of girls called the PLDs short for Pretty Little Devils that get a girl named Hazel to join there group. With joining the group Hazel gets the same enemys the PLDs do such as the cheerleading squad, one member in particular Breona the cpatain of the cheerleading squad. Soon weird things start happening while the PLDs play a mean jokes on Hazel and scare her as part of her initiation murders start happening. Everyone is on edge and no one knows who to pin as the culprit and the murderer first it started out as small things like animals then it escaladed to Breona but it seemed like an accident, everything is pinned on the PLDs since the murderer is smart enough to kill all their enemies. In the end the murderer is captured or so everyone thinks, turns out the physco is still out there.
I give this a text-to-text connection because it's sort of like the Private series because no one knows who murdered Thomas Pierce until everything gets really crazy. With the PLDs the murderer mixed in the the murders with the pranks so it seemed inconvient, and they were enemies to the PLDs or certain members. In the Private series Ariana Osgood who is one of the Billings Girls is jealous of Reed because her fling boyfriend Thomas decided to go out with her. In her own twisted way she was satisfied when she killed him and the say ing keep your friends close and enemies closer applyed to her Reed and the Billings Girls, it all ended with her trying to kill Reed but was taken to an instiute... or so everyone thought.
I gave this book 5 stars because of the drama and i kept reading it over and over again. It also left me kind of confused but the confusion is like a to be continued episode of a show in my mind. Like all the books I gave 5 stars its a movie or a tv show in my mind. It's awsome and kind of funny in a twisted way.

I could not put this book down! It had me guessing until the end who the culprit was because it literally could have been anybody! My initial guess at who it was was NOT who it was and that is all I am saying on that before I spill the beans but it basically has your usual clique of popular girls that everybody wants to be or in this story wants a piece of.

Sylvia was an awesome character...played her part to the hilt as the original queen biatch who tried to rule all her queens courts lives better known as the PLD's. She is just one of those characters that you love to hate and as much as I despised her I loved Hazel. She was sweet to an extent but she was determined not to succomb to Sylvia's rules like the others had no matter what and then things begin to get nasty as animals and students begin to pile up dead and it appears somebody has it out for the PLD Squad but WHO?

As good as it was there were still some moments that just didn't click for me or seem to fit like for instance there was this one dead animal whose owner/character just didn't have anything to do with the story. It just never got tied or gave motive to the killer for it's death but overall a wonderfully suspensful read!

Pretty Little Devils (PLD's) is about a girl named Hazel who wants to be one of the popular girls like the PLD's. Pretty Little Devils is a group of popular girls at school who are worshipped and envied. The group includes Sylvia the leader, Carolyn, Megan and Ellen. Sylvia lets Hazel join the group and suddenly shes one of them, ditching her old friends. What they dont know is that one of the PLD's is a killer and 3 of them will be dead before schools over.

Text to Text. This book reminds me of the book Killing Britney because she used to be unpopular just like Hazel and she had a problem because everyone around her was dying. She didnt know what to o much like Hazek didnt know.

I gave this book 5 stars because at the end when you find out who the killer is you just get so surprised, it was so unexpected. First its like your leading yourself on by saying for example, Megans the killer megans the killer! but then you are so far away from right you get so surprised and your jaw literally falls open. If poeple liked this book i recomend the book Killing brittney.

It seems like maybe I am being to harsh these days. I mean I didn't finish the final book of the Eve trilogy which The first two books I loved. Maybe I am being to picky. I didn't finish this one because I already knew the end but I don't know.

I didn't even finish this book. It was just too predictable! I knew who the murderer was from the start. Even before there were murders.

I skipped to the last chapter to see if I was right and wow the book actually would have been really creepy if it weren't so obvious!! Sylvia was framed and arrested and put in jail but I knew I KNEW it wasn't her. They only disclose on the very VERY LAST LINE that it is in fact

I only got to page 75 when I realized there was no point in continuing on when I already know the end and who the murderer is. That makes sense right? Why keep going if you know what'll happen?

This book was a huge and creepy disappointment and well I guess that's why it was on sale for $2. I regret buying this book it was a waste.

Pretty Little Devils was a great book. It was about a bunch of girls in high school in this group called the pretty little devils. They are the most popular girls in school. They rule the school, they can get away with whatever they want to. It always helps when they are cheerleaders. It's there junior year in high school. Then in the cafeteria on the first day of school, Hazel, a girl that was never ntoiced much, accidentally crossed the head cheerleader of The Pretty LIttle Devils. Sylvia, after spilling her drink on the socially unnoticed girl invited her to the cheerleader's next party. At the party Hazel stumbles over Matty, who is the mysterious new guy that seems to be connected in a variety of subjects. While hanging with the "DEVILS" Hazel seems to like being near the spotlight and slowly drifts away from her old past and life. All of this concludes to the point that popularity always comes with a price if taken advantage of the adorement.

Sylvia, Megan, Carolyn, and Ellen are known as the Pretty Little Devils - the most popular group in the school. Everybody knows them. Everybody wants to be them. Suddenly, Hazel IS one of them. She gets to go to the soirees, the parties, everything. And she snagged Matty Vardeman, the guy of her dreams.

Suddenly, however, Breona, the head cheerleader and Sylvia's biggest enemy, turns up dead. The police are in the school, questioning everybody, and the table is turned upside down. No one can be sure of anyone anymore. Nothing is every certain. You may think you know someone... but you might not.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book or not. I'd heard of people who loved it or hated it, and I hadn't really seen anything in the middle. I thought it was really good though. It wasn't just the usual 'the popular girls and their lives, blah, blah, blah,' that I usually see. It was a really good mystery that kept you on your toes.

I can't believe I just now found this book. It came out around the same time as some of my favorites. It is like a cross between Kate Brian's Private and Pretty Little Liars but came out before them. I loved this book. The story line is awesome and addicting it kept me guessing until the end and the last page was awesome. I don't want to give anything away since it is a mystery but I loved it!!!!

This book is kind of scary. It's a mistery and the author leads the reader through all of the events that happen to Hazel and the Pretty Little Devils, to where (at the end) the author reveals the mistery murderer! (NOTE: DON'T SKIP TO THE VERY LAST PAGE! IT WILL JUST RUIN THE WHOLE STORY!)

I'm really not into high school drama books, but this one kept me going. You kind of know what might happen but then things twist up again. Very suspenseful. I would read it again. If you like youthful, love, school, drama, suspense and mystery then this is for you young adult. No complaints.

Read for the Reading Rush: a book with a house on the cover.

Trigger warning: bullying, animal death, murder, loss of a loved one, etc.

Pretty Little Devils is very similar to Pretty Little Liars, shown by the similar name and plot devices. I heard a reviewer say that it's a cross between Mean Girls and Scream, which I highly agree with as well. If you love that concept, you might enjoy this. I enjoyed the sound of that mix, especially since I loved those types of shows/movies when I was a teenager, so I picked it up. It really does start out with that stereotypical "girl" texting language that may be overbearing for some people. It's dedicated towards teenagers so the writing style isn't hard to understand.

I think that there were a valid number of suspects, who each give the reader reason to believe they could have done it. For a teenager, who probably hasn't read as many mystery/thriller novels, it's a fun one to try and guess who the suspect is. When it comes to this, it feels very much like Pretty Little Liars (and trying to guess who A is).

There was a lack of connection with the main character. We didn't get to know very much about her personality, her likes and dislikes, etc, even though we were in her POV. We were told at the beginning that it would be hard for her to do this new babysitting gig because of her parents being sort of strict, but we never see how this played out. It fast forwards to the actual gig. We never see her parents in the novel themselves, which is typical for YA. However, parents are pretty important in a teenager's daily life, especially one who has stricter parents. I would've liked to see how she navigated around their terms. Other people in the story have strict parents as well, and it's also not said how they got around babysitting or throwing parties very well. One of the girls gets away with it because her dad is apparently gone for a couple days, and Hazel, the main character, evidently gets away with staying out late because she makes up the excuse of studying.

I really refuse to believe in the detective's work in all this. They seemed to be doing a really terrible, and inactive, job in this. For example, they take forever to question any of the girls in the group. They also prowled around the cafeteria without seemingly doing anything of use.

Hazel's love interest seemed cute, but I didn't see much of their interaction on shared interests. They both express an interest in art in the beginning, but we don't see them interacting much together on this. But do they kiss? Yeah, probably too much.

Overall, it was an okay book. The plot is very interesting and it keeps you wanting more. I'd recommend it to teenagers who REALLY enjoy a mix of the shows/books I mentioned above. But if you don't, there's probably other books out there for you.

1.5/5. The .5 is because although it was pretty bad, it was entertaining enough that I read it almost entirely in one sitting. I briefly considered DNFing and reading the last few pages, but I decided to finish it and I’m not mad that I did. The culprit was the first person I suspected and I was hoping the author would go with someone else, but unfortunately it ended up being the most obvious suspect.

I hate to make bad reviews of books but this one was not good. The storyline was hard to follow. The plot was unclear. The characters were unrelateable.
I am very disappointed. I read this after checking out a supernatural book, and I was excited to see what else there was to offer.
I will give the author one more chance but, I do hope it gets better.

Wow first of all this book was really slow. It only started getting interesting at around page 120 maybe and the ending was honestly pathetic. Like no action at all at the end when they find out everything. Just seemed like the author just wanted to end it. I'm severely disappointed and I feel like my time was wasted.
