Pat Mills, born in 1949 and nicknamed 'the godfather of British comics', is a comics writer and editor who, along with John Wagner, revitalised British boys comics in the 1970s, and has remained a leading light in British comics ever since.
His comics are notable for their violence and anti-authoritarianism. He is best known for creating 2000 AD and playing a major part in the development of Judge Dredd.
Beautiful, eye-searing, jaw-dropping artwork, with a script so twisted, dark and insane that it proves yet again that Pat Mills has the finest mind in comics. Unashamedly adult, bloody yet gorgeous, seductive and revolting, a glorious clash of emotional responses.
My favourite character in this book so far might be Otto von Todt (yes, that's his name), a former devoted Nazi soldier. There you go, a sentence I'd never thought I'd say.
This series is set in hell, essentially. It's full of Nazis. The main character, Heinrich, (a knight who's called ''honorable'' on multiple instances) is a Nazi. The author himself said in one of the introductions that the MC was somehow likeable, as far as Nazis go. Well, no, thank you. I ''like'' Otto because he's a charming badass (still a Nazi, I know), but don't go around suggesting your readers should feel sympathy towards Nazis. I recommend skipping the author's prefaces in general, if you just want to enjoy the comic books for what they are and not bother with the author's personal political and moral litanies, which leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth (unless you're a Nazi, of course) - especially when Heinrich's ex-lover, a Jewish woman, gets shit for using Heinrich and gaining power over him through sex and manipulation because she didn't want to be gassed. Yeah, what a fucking bitch, right? That's where you're supposed to feel sorry for Heinrich, by the way.
The whole concept is fucked up - the more sinful life you lead, the better off you are in Resurrection (which is the ''official name'' of this place). If you've ''only'' committed suicide or if you're a former a corrupted businessman, you're nothing. If you've killed and tortured thousands of people, you're Dracula, the most powerful being in Resurrection, you run the place. Congrats. To be fair, I don't really see a problem with that. It's a fiction after all and it works - hell should be twisted and messed up. The story is full of cynical dark humour which I dig, and it's really rather inventive. What's problematic are only the author's claims which make me feel a bit uneasy about stuff I wouldn't normally give a damn about in an obviously fictional world that's intentionally sick and offensive.
Moving on - the art is what truly stands out. It's so ridiculously over the top - every panel is full of Satanic imagery, as if the artist did a challenge of how many six's and reversed crosses is possible to insert in one book. It looks like a mixture of Giger, Beksiński and Iron Maiden album covers. It's absolutely gorgeous, especially the backgrounds with the gothic buildings and macabre ornaments. It's so fucking extra and I'm here for it. Only German would make this more metal, written in Schwabach, preferably.
Overall, this is an enjoyable and twisted ride that is absolutely worth it just for the stunning artwork. Just don't look much into it.

When I wrote an angry article at some point, a friend asked me “what do you want to achieve by that”. Here, the answer is to get things out of my system. This is a requiem to the once upon a time my favourite unfinished series… Requiem.
I read a part of them in an issue of Heavy Metal, it had that scene where a person is torn apart to be then fed to some Egyptian style Pharaonic overlords. As it sometimes happens, it is the timing that changes everything. At the same time I had listened to “Imprisoned with the Pharaohs” a Lovecraftian song from my favourite band Pre-emptive Strike 0.1 while it was my last summer of living in Greece. I still remember the summer, the breeze of the sea, the song in my car's player, the fact that I could carry the magazine with me to the seaside, and… thinking about a foreign land that works like that could be purchased very easily.
I did not purchase the following instalments as I was a student and on the move, until I was able to get my first “proper” job and have some disposable income. Furthermore, I really liked the storyline and the drawing as well, but also admired a lot the fact that the story was about to conclude at some point in the future. I remember that when finances allowed, I pre-ordered on Amazon the next volume and waited. Some days(?)/weeks(?) later on there was a notification email that the publisher had delayed the publication, and then waited more. Then after some waiting cancelled the pre-order. Then started checking Pat Mills on his web blog and some social media to see when issue 11 would come out. I was checking periodically, like every 3/4 months when I had a time gap. Finally, issue 11 came into being alongside with poo to our faces from our beloved author of the series.
First issue 11 was available only in digital format. When people including myself asked why that was the case, we were told from the author that the contract for the print version had the clause that 2 volumes would be published in one print version. So wait a bit more, I guess? Does that mean that 12 is “coming soon” to conclude the series? I do not know why, but I was certain that there would only be 12 volumes, so 6 printed. I bought the digital version and waited.
Then MANY years passed. It seemed to me that Pat Mills had either some old age stuff to deal with, or other projects, which kept him from working on it. After again lots of time we got served the absolute shitstorm — in my opinion always — issue 12.
First: this is not the last one. Pat ? How many years do we have to wait until this thing is over? Will we live through to witness it? Based on the fact that it takes so long, shouldn't you somehow rewrite the script and wrap-up in volume 12? Or if you want so much to finish on 13 somehow make it the next project in pipeline to get over with it? F-off again?
Second, let's ridicule our fan base who prefers a printed version — part 1: Issue 12 is ONLY available digitally from a non-popular platform. There is no way to have a printed version unless you are French. I understand that the medium is far more popular in France but as it seems from the content, there are scenes in it that unfold into 4 pages — I think 2 of them — which make sense ONLY IN PRINT unless you have a hu-u-ge monitor. It kind of forces you to choose a medium of consumption?
Third, let's ridicule our fan base who prefers a printed version — part 2: THERE WILL NEVER BE A VOLUME 11 AND 12 PRINTED BUNDLE. As Pat wrote around that “the publisher MAY publish them” which in the current market is never. So when issue 11 became available, we were being lied to or bullshitted. It was not like: “hey bozos, wait who knows how many years to get it”, and then “you were never meant to have it all along”.
On the same lines, we had a downgrade of our issue 11 purchase: It was as a read online AND PDF download on Comixology. Now Amazon, the then and now owner of Comixology, bundled it with Kindle which does not have that option. AKA if you had not downloaded the PDF back then or don't know since it is 1000 years you lost the file, now you can never have it to read it anywhere you want. There was the reason the term “enshittification” became word of the year for a dictionary.
Fourth and last, again worth to separate: there is not an end in sight for the series. It has been going for don't know 200X something, is supposed to finish at some point, and instead I see Pat Mills doing an SHA or work on other properties without anything having started.
Fifth, Bonus :), Claudia: Least we forget! Spin off in another language. 5 books according to Goodreads, Book 1 is available in English, cool. Books 2–6: no! In this day and age, translations can be either crowdsourced and/or be done with a ton of available Machine Learning tools. I think when I asked the author there was a response in the lines of “if a publisher is interested dadada…”, like: “I don't care… idiots”.
Conclusion and Actions
I am certain that I liked the series more than its authors. It can happen, I understand. There are people who told me that they loved some of my podcasts that I have completely forgotten I had done in the first place… I empathise, I know. I think the humour in Requiem, the kind-of historic setting as history is my hobby, the emotional connection with the series which happened by accident, all must be something that happened with VERY FEW people. It can maybe be mostly/only me for all I know.
As 2024 was a pivotal year for me and with all the above in mind, I decided to disengage. I downloaded the material from nefarious sources to save me from scanning it, will re-read it in the future, will get issue 13 when and if it gets released again from similar sources. I am aware of the sunken cost fallacy. Many times in life you need to get things out of your bookshelves, so that new books can come in, social circle so that new friends can come in, etc, etc. Bye-bye Vampire Knight, thank you, Pat, you can now go yourself with a chainsaw… or better not, go and finish it, and you will be forgiven.
Dedicated to JC for bearing with my outrages for so many years.

This is certainly noton for those easily offended with graphic artwork depicting the hellish world of Resurrection following the tale of an SS soldier killed in WWII and his journey becoming a Vampire Knight, heading into a very gory blood soaked battle in London and meeting the Dracula family. All the while he has to get to grips with the reversal of life experienced in Resurrection where you grow young instead of old and bad is good and good gets you knowhere. An interesting read with excellent accompanying artwork, although not for the faint of heart
Pat Mills proves he's got one of the maddest comic brains in the industry with this over the top look at a macabre and repulsive inverted world where evil is the moral zenith and good will get you nowhere. Funny, endlessly creative but still disturbing the book is brought to garish and gory life by the artistic genius of Olivier Ledroit. Not one for the easily offended. This is the French to English translation.
I read up to the issue where Carmilla floors the Pirate Queen from her blood bath...but I will read again and in its entirety because I can't stop laughing! This stuff is hilarious and fun in its own disgusting little way. A great read if you got the stomach for it and the funny bone for it. Beautifully illustrated too!
Quite frankly the most stunningly detailed graphic novel I have ever read. The colours are striking, and the scenery and figures are beautiful. The world we're introduced to is fascinating and I can't wait to sink my teeth into more. (I'm sorry, I couldn't resist that one)
You wouldn't expect a comic book about nazi vampires in hell to be good, but I was surprisingly swept along with this crazy story. The grandiose and macabre art is a perfect match. The lavish, darkly beautiful detail makes it worth the year long waits for each individual issue.
I've read réquiem in Portuguese and the translators did an amazing job, like actually what the fuck? why is this so good I've never read anything more gore and infernal than réquiem great read amazing art job definitely read if you didn't yet
Absolutely incredible art and a story at the height of absurdness. Olivier Ledroit is the absolute best illustrator I have ever seen in comics. There's him ... and the rest. I've read this with a big smile on my face. I was very, very impressed. I tend to stick with scifi comics but after seeing a couple of spreads of this after reading SHA (another must) I knew this is just too incredible to miss. And I was right. I'm going through all of them at the moment. It just gets weirder and more insane as I move along. Exceptional.
Good, if overly grotesque, artwork and the usual incredible world building you expect from a master craftsman life Pat Mills. However, the story was only okay with a great opening and set up that went into a confusing battle that was difficult to follow, primarily because of the artwork which is overwhelmingly detailed. Much better in the quieter moments when not much was going on. I'll be interested to see how the story progresses.
Requiem Vampire Knight possesses layers of satirical humour laced with potent, extravagant violence that punctuates each page.
So what is the basic story? Heinrich has served the Fatherland faithfully. He fully embraces the concepts both politically and spiritually of National Socialism. It has been the salvation of his people and there is nothing he would not do for the cause. But Heinrich has a dark secret which overshadows his patriotic soul. He has fallen in love with a beautiful Jewish girl. He has sown his Germanic seed inside the enemy of his people and he is filled with self-loathing and guilt. However, his soul still burns with the passions of love.
Requiem Vampire Knight opens with Henrich dying on the Eastern Front. His striking face and the white snow accentuate the deep red blood leaking from a fatal wound inflicted by the Marxist Russian army. His thoughts drift to Rebecca, his one true love. This is a love which should not be but is none the less. Dying, he barely perceives a Russian soldier lift a portrait of Rebecca and contemptuously infer a coarse sexual reference. This relationship is a greater blasphemy than that of the Bolshevik army sweeping away the glorious German army. With the last of his strength, Heinrich reaches out and snatches the sacred portrait. Finally, he received a bullet to the head, killing him instantly.
The reader travels with Heinrich through his death to his resurrection in Hell. Here, he promptly massacres zombies who have been looting corpses with a weapon that shoots metal stakes. Keep an eye out for Tepess (Vlad the Impaler). Heinrich then saves a vampire captain of the Resurrection corps. At this point, it’s revealed that Henrich is a vampire too and we witness his training and his rebirth as Requiem.
This story has gallons of action, mixed with a little pathos and satirical, wiry humor. We have completely grotesque characters interacting with even more insanely grotesque characters. The first volume builds a series of memorable protagonists and backstories. The conflicts between the groups of characters as they interact with each other becomes addictive. The reader turns each page wanting more, greedily thirsting for the next series of panels and more rich, catchy, intelligent dialogue. However, the main characters possess few redeeming characteristics. The protagonist is relatable but he was a Nazi, the bastard.
Oliver Ledroit’s art is incredible. The digital format is very impressive as you can zoom in on the detail. It’s rich, evocative, disturbing, and instantly iconic. Every page challenges the eye of the reader. The characters are given a vivid quality and there are some fantastic choices of colour. Each panel matches the tone of the narrative perfectly. The lettering is dynamic and clear making this collection easy to read and follow.
This first volume of Requiem Vampire Knight will capture your mind and corrupt your heart. You will instantly reach out and consume the next volume. This is a classic in Mills’ repertoire and a very different side to the creator of Slaine and ABC Warriors. I found myself drawn into the hellish, inverted universe of Requiem Vampire Knight. Watching the protagonist interact with historical characters such as Dracula and Aleister Crowley was a highlight of this volume for me. Be sure to check it out!
